Read the text, then do the true/false exercise: Native Americans have lived in what is now the United States for thousands of years, long before Europeans went there. Today they only make up about 1% of the total population. Why? Starting in the 17th century more and more European settlers came and drove the Native Americans off their land. The white settlers also brought new diseases that killed many Native Americans. The first settlers stayed on the east coast. In the middle of the 18th century people started to move west of the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. The first people who moved west were people who caught animals and sold their skins. They were called fur traders and trappers. In 1804 President Thomas Jefferson asked Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore what is now the central and western United States. They left St Louis in 1804 with a group of 33. The group reached the Pacific in 1806, seeing much of the west on the way and writing down what they saw. By the 1840ies many people were moving to Oregon by wagon, and even more people went west after the California Gold Rush of 1849. During this time Native Americans were pushed off their land. There were 240 Native American tribes who spoke 300 different languages.
Session 1 – Exploring the American West
3
The Native Americans did not believe that anyone could own land. They believed the land was there for everyone to use and enjoy. After the Civil War (1861-1865) people continued to move west where new states were founded. People could get free land in the west because of a law called the Homestead Act. Many people who travelled West wanted to start a new life and they were not afraid of adventures. true

Read the text and decide if the sentences are true or false: Johnny Depp John Christopher Depp was born in 1963 in Kentucky. His childhood was difficult and Johnny was a shy boy. His mother bought him a guitar when he was 12. At the age of fifteen he dropped out of school because he wanted to become a rock musician. He was not very successful at becoming a rock star. In 1983 he married Lori Allison, a Hollywood make-up artist. She introduced him to the actor Nicolas Cage, who encouraged him to take up acting. Depp made his film debut the following year with a role in “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. This was the first of many successful films. Today Depp is one of Hollywood’s top earners. Depp’s marriage ended in divorce in 1985. He had love affairs with celebrities including actress Winona Ryder and supermodel Kate Moss. In 1998 he met Vanessa Paradis with whom he has two children. Depp says his children mean everything to him and have given him deep love. Depp and Paradis ended their relationship in June 2012. Depp has appeared in some very popular movies. All of his roles have been very different. He played Willy Wonka in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Although some of his films have been extremely successful Depp says he only chooses films that he finds personally interesting and not those that might be a commercial success. true false 1.
