Design Statement

Motivation

My final project is a lighthearted interactive detective story with a simple premise; find the missing sock. The game time will be short, spanning only a few minutes worth of gameplay, and the game’s simple narrative relies on challenging puzzles to capture the player’s interest. The puzzles will require the player to think outside the game world and gather clues in unexpected places.

My motivation for choosing this project is that I find myself to be constantly drawn to simple independent games such as the recently released LIMBO. These games are less afraid to take risks and lead the way in terms of innovation in game design. My aim is to create a game that will not warrant more than one play-through but instead touches on the more unique aspects of blurring the line between the interactive game world and the real world.

The storytelling as well as graphical styles of the game will mimic those typically used in film noir, contrasting with the silly narrative of a game centered around a missing sock.

Audience and Context The game is meant to be played by casual gamers, and anyone looking for a fun way to kill a few minutes without the commitment of playing a ‘hardcore’ game. With that in mind, the audience will be aged 21 and above.

The audience will be drawn to play the game because it offers a gaming experience that isn’t independent of the world in which we live. The plot and interactivity both rely on the player’s pre-existing real life skills such as finding a location on Google Maps or creating a function in a spreadsheet.

Inspiration

The narrative and graphical styles are inspired by those used in the film noir genre, while the style of gameplay and the events that occur are similar to the LucasArts adventure games produced in the 1990’s.

Sock tries to find its missing pair, and realizes it has been lost.

Sock asks for the player’s help finding her mate.

The sock was last seen entering the dryer; so off to the laundry room to search for clues. A ransom note is found in the dryer, along with a post-it note in a trouser pocket with a mysterious name on it.

Back to the bedroom, The player must figure out what to do next.

The player must open a browser window and search facebook for name.

Checking the “location” in the facebook profile you find coordinates to the city of Bath, UK.

Next stop: The bathroom to search for more clues.

A lint-creature is found behind the medicine cabinet.

The creature will not give out any information on his boss, so the player must get creative.

After shaking down the creature he points to the post-it note on the medicine cabinet.

Apparently, this particular underling is forgetful and needs to keep reminders around for everything. The note contains a clue to the password to the villain’s lair

The note contains a shortened URL with a cryptic message that the player must figure out.
