GHORAMI.JON
GHORAMI [ঘরামী ] is the Bangla word for Rural Grassroots Builders.
Officially founded in 2013, GHORAMI.JON [ ঘরামী.জন ] was constituted with a vision to apply knowledge of APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY and ECOLOGY in built environment. The organization provides consultancy services for developing Sustainable HABITAT, SHELTER, SETTLEMENT and LANDSCAPE Planning schemes for mostly marginalized and rural communities. GHORAMI.JON implies the term ‘HABITAT’ and ‘COMMUNITY’ in socio-ecological senses inclusive of Human and surrounding Biodiversity.

HABITAT? Human Habitats are placed in Natural Habitats. Therefore its necessary to grow a holistic and simultaneous concern for the Habitats of both Human Community and Natural Community.

The requirement was to demolish an existing near-tocollapse earthen room and an adjacent kitchen and to build a strong new room and an open learning place instead within the shortest time possible which government can take rent for educating the drop-out children as part of their outreach education program; the picture shows existing congested learning place at main bedroom verandah
Views of Asbestos sheet (banned these days) and earthen tile roofed existing structures; the earthen walls were slanting outwardly at the top; there was one ‘Geowa’ tree (Excoecaria agallocha, a mangrove species) edging the existing earthen mound that were saved while working.

DEMOLITION WORK IN PROGRESS
PLAN DRAWN AND IMPROVISED NUMEROUS TIMES ON SITE
The structure was conceived not as a barrier to the wind, rather like an instrument to let the force pass through it; roof vents, the overall openness all carry this vision of design concept. But necessary and affordable measures were also taken at the same time; pre-cast RCC posts, split-bamboo bracings, upper and lower bamboo beams connecting vertical CC posts into a network - all are such respective measures.
CC POSTS AND BAMBOOS WERE USED INSTEAD OF FOREST WOOD AS STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS.
CC POSTS REPLACED THE FOREST LOGS FOR STRUCTURAL PURPOSES.
SEVERE DRIVING RAIN MADE THE CONDITION ALL MUDDY AND HARD TO WORK, BUT ‘GHORAMI’S (LOCAL MASTERBUILDERS) KEPT ON WORKING.
WORK IN PROGRESS
Harsh weather conditions and rain made it take 9 days from demolishing the existing structure up to the construction of the new one. The required finish for rendering the earthen plinth through cement stabilization could not be given immediately after the completion of the structure; it was still very wet . The local masons finished that job at next winter(dry condition) though.
The regenerating Mangrove species including Geowa (Excoecaria agallocha), Keora (Sonneratia apetala) and Baen (Avicennia sp.) on the water edge were preserved to check soil erosion and also to create a natural barrier against the strong winds.
