An award-winning newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers

From the President & CEO This is the time of year that we announce the opening of our annual Employee Engagement Survey. This survey helps us learn what you feel we are doing well and how we can be better. Your thoughtful, candid and honest participation is very important.

The results of the Employee Engagement Survey help guide us in providing an environment that is supportive of employees to perform their best. That is why we conduct this annual survey. We will, again, partner with Gallup to launch our Employee Engagement Survey on October 14, 2019. I encourage you to take a few minutes to provide your feedback. All answers are anonymous.

To achieve success, research shows that how you feel about your work and workplace is essential to doing your best in delivering the highest quality healthcare to our patients. If you have any questions about the survey, please ask your leader Engaged employees are dedicated to patients, put in maximum or contact Naomi Lippin at 333-0228 or Lorin Mask at 333-0227. effort and focus on excellence and continuous improvement. STAGE

HIMMS Analytics has revalidated Orange Regional as a Stage 7 organization. This award confirms that we maintain the highest level of their Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM). In 2016, Orange Regional was the second hospital in New York to achieve this certification. Today, we remain among 6.5% of all hospitals nationwide to be recognized at this stage of EMRAM.

This achievement is a true organizational accomplishment, with the combined efforts of IT, Clinical and Operational teamwork helping to prepare for, achieve and build upon the model. For more information, contact Associate Chief Information Officer, Craig Filippini, at 333-2555 or cfilippini@ghvhs.org.

Volunteer Gives Over 10,000 Hours

Volunteer Services Manager, Maureen Roche with Ken Nywening.

We thank Ken Nywening for his devoted service and for giving our organization over 10,000 hours of his time. Ken started volunteering in 2001 at Arden Hill Hospital and has been a transporter with us since then. He is a veteran from the US Army and served in Vietnam - his photo hangs on the ORMC Honor Wall. Ken loves to walk the area's nature trails, completes puzzles of 1,000 plus pieces and is well loved by his fellow volunteers. He comes to the Hospital at least twice a week and is a fixture within our organization. Â For more information on how to volunteer, contact Maureen at 333-0213 or mroche1@ghvhs.org. 3

New Observation Unit Opens On September 4, a ribbon cutting was held in celebration of the newly constructed Observation Unit on 2 West. The Unit was designed to decrease congestion in the Emergency Department and prevent ED diversion. Due to the high volume of patients we serve in the community, we wanted to decrease the length of stay in the ED and provide a comfortable space while patients are being observed. Observation units help to support and improve quality outcomes, ED diversions and increase patient care and satisfaction. For more information, contact Nursing Director of Observation Care, Justine Geisler, at jgeisler@ghvhs.org. The Power Of Organ Donation In February 2015, Kelly Kryzak was brought to Orange Regional’s Emergency Department suffering from a heart attack. In the year that followed, Kelly faced a number of health struggles and was told she needed a heart replacement. She became one of nearly 10,000 New Yorkers in need of this lifesaving transplant. Thankfully, she didn’t have to wait very long before receiving a healthy new heart in March 2016. Kelly is now living a normal, healthy life, but she hasn’t forgotten the incredible team that saved her life. On July 1, 2019 she returned to the hospital to perform transplant recipient rounds in partnership with LiveOnNY, the nonprofit organization tasked with overseeing organ donation and transplantation in New York. During her visit, Kelly thanked the doctors and nurses who saved her life in 2015. Kelly said she got a second chance at life thanks to a selfless organ donor and because of the amazing medical care she received at Orange Regional.

The Importance Of Independent Double Checks For many years, independent double checks have been used as a risk-reduction strategy and, at Orange Regional, they remain an important part of our ‘Culture of Safety’. The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) defines an independent double check as “a process in which two clinicians independently check each component of prescribing, dispensing, and administering a medication.” When used judiciously, independent double checks can detect up to 95% of errors. Automated double checks, such as barcoding and smart pump technology, can provide better results when used in conjunction with manual double checks. (ISMP, 2013) To reduce the risk of bias and to increase efficacy, the double check must be done independently by a second person. This means both healthcare workers must review the orders, the drug, lab results and calculations separately. The value of the independent double check has been repeatedly reaffirmed in research studies. Many of the pitfalls of medication administration have been reduced with the advent of computergenerated orders, dispensing technological advances, barcoding and smart infusion pumps. However, one must not become complacent that these technologies eliminate errors. Technology used in conjunction with independent double checks can help decrease medication errors, but the double check process must be used judiciously on select, high-risk medications. The inclusion of the independent double check should not be taken lightly. At its best and when done correctly, the independent double check can literally save a life. For more information on Culture of Safety, contact Quality Data Specialist, Katie Haun, at 333-1294 or khaun@ghvhs.org. 6

Full Of Great Ideas?

Joyce Timko received the August "Cone of Innovation" award for an idea she submitted to the Innovation Department. Because of her idea, a surgical patient’s family can now receive text message updates during a procedure verses just looking at the status board in the waiting area. GREAT idea, right? To submit your great idea, visit the intranet homepage and click on the ‘Innovation’ button.

Annual Education Reminder The Organization, Development & Learning Department has kicked off annual education for the Greater Hudson Valley Health System. Employees, who joined the System in 2019 and have completed the general hospital orientation, have already fulfilled the annual education requirement. For all other employees, annual education must be completed by October 31. For more information, contact Manager of Organizational Development and Learning, Naomi Lippin, at x0228 or nlippin@ormc.org.

It’s Flu Season Influenza is coming and it’s time to get prepared. Influenza vaccines are available in the Occupational Health office located on the 4th floor of the Outpatient Building. No appointment necessary. The Occupational Health team will also be rounding to all units and off-site locations to help facilitate access to your flu vaccine. The New York State Department of Health mandates that all workers in the healthcare field get vaccinated or wear a mask once widespread flu is declared. For more information, call the Occupation Health office at 333-2060.
