November 2014

From The President & CEO As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, I think it’s important to reflect on all we have to be thankful for. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all volunteers, employees and physicians for your dedication and hard work in going above and beyond for our patients and their families. I receive Scott Batulis President & CEO many incredible letters from patients and family members describing in precise detail the extraordinary things that people do every day for our patients here at Orange Regional. Our patients appreciate all that you do and so do I. When we’re healthy we tend to take our health for granted but when we’re sick, we remember that there is nothing more important than our health. Make a goal to eat better and exercise regularly so you can stay healthy and inspire others around you to be healthy, as well.

I am grateful for my family including my wife, my children and my new grandchild. We should all take a little time out this holiday season to appreciate our loved ones. I’m also thankful for our organization. Many hospitals and healthcare systems are struggling while we continue to be stable and strong. Strength in our business does not come easy. It takes all of us working together. I’m thankful to have the opportunity to work with all of you and to continue to make an important difference in the lives of our patients and our community. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Sincerely,

Scott Batulis, President & CEO

Orange Regional Medical Group’s Kate Santoro, MSN, FNP-C answers questions about Flu Season:

Q&A Kate

Is the flu harmless? Although many people can recover from the flu without complications, the seasonal flu hospitalizes 200,000 people in the U.S. each year and kills between 3,000 and 49,000 people. The very young and very old are particularly at risk for complications of the flu. Can the flu vaccine give you the flu? No, this is scientifically impossible. There is no live flu virus in the flu shot. If you develop a cold or flu symptoms within days of getting the flu vaccine, chances are you came in to contact with someone else that was carrying a cold or flu virus. Can antibiotics cure the flu? Antibiotics cannot cure viral infections, only bacterial infections. The flu is a virus and antibiotics cannot kill it. Taking antibiotics when you don’t need them can actually be harmful to your health. Orange Regional Medical Group is accepting new patients. Same day appointments and walk-ins are welcome. Call 333-7575.

Culture Of Caring The letter below is from a patient who thanked Orange Regional for the excellent care she received for her broken hip. To the nursing staff in the Orthopedics and Acute Rehab Departments, I would like to thank the nursing staff at Orange Regional for the excellent care I received for my broken hip during the three weeks I was in the hospital. I was especially impressed with the attention to detail and the consideration that the nurses and nursing assistants displayed. They responded quickly when I buzzed for help and apologized if they were called away to handle a more urgent request. Little things matter. For example, after a transfer, the staff were careful to place the call button where I could reach it, and when they moved my tray table they made sure that my laptop cord did not pull my laptop to the floor and was plugged into a convenient socket. They remembered what I could do by myself and what I couldn’t. They were pleasant and conversational regardless of how busy they were and the floor was 100 percent occupied while I was there. I have been recovering well at home and five weeks after my release can limp along without a cane. Thank you all! Stephanie G. Phillips, PhD

In's & Out's

W

elcome to the "In's & Out's" of the Patient Experience and Transformation Team. The purpose of this monthly highlight is to bring you stories, research and announcements related to patient satisfaction.

Patient Experience Transformation Team As healthcare workers our jobs are demanding, so it's best to stay patient-centered all of the time.

Here are some quotes from patients who let us know when we did it right: "Keep up the great work. Continue hiring kind and compassionate healthcare workers." – about Medical Pavilion Radiation Oncology

There are two types of communication: heart and head. Heart communication is full of emotion, caring and empathy. When we communicate with heart we are perceived as caring and understanding and our patients feel they are important.

"My therapists were most attentive, pleasant and kind extremely knowledgeable and precise." – about Cardiac Rehab

When we communicate from our head we get valuable information. How do we make others feel when we are just giving them facts and information? Somehow we need to communicate to our patients that we care, yet still get vital information needed to complete our clinical tasks.

"The staff from custodian to Dr. were very pleasant, professional and caring." - about Medical Pavilion Ambulatory Surgery "I was exceptionally impressed with the professional care given me from the doctors, nurses and staff. Thank you!" - about the Cath Lab

Wendy Leebov is a renowned speaker on the language of caring and she often speaks about the heart-head-heart sandwich. This “sandwich” accomplishes the provision of gathering "I came on the wrong day and was still able to have information from the patient and making them feel cared for at procedure. Everyone was very kind & considerate." the very same time. Let’s make this mindset contagious at Orange - about Diagnostic Imaging Regional and give all our patients the heart-head-heart sandwich "The gentleman who assisted me during the sleep study was that they all deserve - every day. very professional, explained everything he was doing very clearly and was very considerate of my concerns." When we do it right, we will know. How will we know? Our patients - about Sleep Center will tell us.
