LETTER OF INTRODUCTION

We have known Giacomo Lorenzoni during his studies at USI - Academy of architecture in Mendrisio, Switzerland. Giacomo attended two of our studios. In 2020, whose theme was a Monastery in Scotland and he then graduated with us in 2022 with an extremely interesting diploma work investigating the potential of an ‘open architecture’. With a deep understanding of the given site, the project completely transforms a secondary area of Brussels resolving connections between different levels of the city and creating continuity with the already existing parks through an interesting inversion of the spatial sense of the place. His final work has at the same time the power to deal with a thought topography and the intelligence of taking the maximum advantage of this complex situation generating an incredible variety of spaces, conditions and uses. He has been independent during the whole process and capable of handling challenges with enthusiasm and determination. His work has always been well presented in terms of drawings, images and models. Giacomo proved to be a talented student, with a good balance between intuition, curiosity and method. He is committed and motivated. Please let us know if you have need for additional information about Giacomo Lorenzoni.

Sincerely and Best Regards,

Francisco Aires Mateus

The destination of a large green area, delimited by river Maggia and currently used for football competitions, it is best suited for the insertion of a new public building. The building is oriented on the east-west axis aims to create a new direction pointed towards the waterfall, through the insertion of a new pedestrian street that connects the public structure to the surrounding points of interest. This path, which is divided into a series of ramps, is delimited by two straight walls placed on the same axis. Where the walls are interrupted, the access to the new building is defined. Its internal articulation makes it easy to distinguish the space intended for the swimming pools on the west side and the dining area with terrace on the east one. These two areas are separated each other by the arrangement of a central block, within which all the necessary services are grouped on three levels.

TRA GLI ALBERI COLLABORATION: CELORIA ARCHITECTS

Nuova Mensa e Piazza, Comune di Mendrisio, Switzerland The project site is located within a predominantly green space full of different situations and atmospheres. The New Square is created with the intention of taking every feature of the site and converging it within the central space. It is a surface for everyone: for guests, operators and suppliers. It has a domestic and h u m a n - s c a l e c h a r a c t e r. Like an house, the plaza has a large central hall, connected to the surrounding context. There are also informal and transitional places along the edges, with a specific and well-defined character such as spatial inclusiveness. The building that houses the canteen and “Prestin Noov” becomes the piece that goes to solve the composition. It is the gateway to the Park. On the ground floor are organized spaces for laboratories, and servant s p a c e s f o r t h e c a n t e e n , w h i c h o c c u p i e s t h e e n t i r e f i r s t f l o o r. The access to the new elementary school is provided directly from Via alla Rocca thank to a generous porch. This space becomes also a place for parents to wait and socialize. The building articulates on three levels above the ground, where teaching spaces and classrooms are organized, and a basement, for technical spaces and the gymnasium. New car and bicycle parking spaces are included in the north side of the new masterplan. The historic building is rehabilitated energetically and also reconfigured internally to provide new qualitative spaces for students. .

Pa r k a n d l i v i n g s p a c e s , B r u x e l l e s , B e l g i u m The full becomes void. The void turns into a space full of life and meaning. The architectural intervention aims to enhance a secondary area of Brussels, by reversing its spatial sense. Where there was a closed and private building, a new structure is capable to mend the urban topography of the area. The roof of the new intervention becomes a new green area, resolving with a gentle slope the connections between the different levels of the city and creating continuity with the already existing parks o f t h e c i t y. The inside of the building offers a multitude of spaces with different scale and relations: social and public, residential and private, which make the whole building a real centre of attraction.

The building is located in the final point of a long coastal walk that literally immerses into the island. UN FARO A MARGHERA Atelier Arnaboldi, A.A.M. 2020-2021

S t a z i o n e c r o c i e r e , Po r t o M a r g h e r a , I t a l y The design proposal is created to respond to the need to divert the flow of “big ships” from the Giudecca canal. The solution presented here involves the construction of a new cruise terminal in the Marghera area. The project seeks a direct connection with Forte Marghera, through the creation of a large park, within which we would to guarantee the different services. The creation of a large green area involves the removal of degraded buildings, keeping only those of value, useful for maintaining the industrial character of the area. The theme of accessibility is also important. Our intent is to exploit the resources offered to us, to ensure immediate achievement of the enhanced area. The introduction of a light tower on this tip of land is therefore almost spontaneous, located specifically in proximity of the “ring” of interchanges. The building is intended as an hotel, with a restaurant and a sky b a r o n t h e t o p f l o o r s , i n c l u d i n g a l s o a p u b l i c t e r r a c e , r e a c h a b l e v i a a n i n t e r n a l h e l i c a l c l i m b s t a i r. The building for the departure and arrival of cruises, on the other hand, develops horizontally along the Nort h I n d u s t r i a l C a n a l . The two large halls guarantee the ascent to the first level, intended for controls, to then flow at the second level, intended for departures and arrivals spaces. Both projects have a metal structure, designed to ensure great flexibility of the interior spaces as well as t h e i r p e r f e c t i n t e g r a t i o n i n t o t h e i n d u s t r i a l c o n t e x t . HYBRID TOWER Atelier Collomb, A.A.M. 2016-2017

R e s i d e n t i a l To w e r, Antwerp,Belgium The project is located in a new architectural development area. The purpose of this architectural intervention is to re-qualify a disused and secondary area offering apartments and spaces for events. The concept want to have a free ground floor to ensure permeability from the city to the canal, where the social spaces are concentrated. The tower in its development follows the concept of hybrid. In fact, on its 60-meter-high floor there are overlapping living patterns in order to create a structure that guarantees a variety of options according to the needs of its buyer. On the ground floor there is the warehouse for the square to the side, and the empty space aimed at the entrance to the apartments. On the upper floors, the first typology has six flat apartments, intended for students. The second type presents four duplex used as workspaces and living spaces for artists. On the upper floors there are also other types of 4 apartments per floor, two apartments per floor and the attic intended as the common space with services available to the residents. The concept of the single apartment is to have a central center space that leads in the other rooms, following the theme of the enfilade. This concept allows for intimacy, when the large sliding doors of the rooms are closed, but at the same time transparency from side to side of the apartment.
