giada thuong campigotto - selected works

:

Recently graduated at IUAV University of Venice, my belief in Architecture focuses on social justice expressed through design. I am mainly interested in the future of cities, with the desire to empower communities by working on the regeneration of public space. During my career, I have been involved in the research about urban metabolism at different scales: from shrinking cities and gentrification projects, to land recycling strategies and neighbourhood regeneration scenarios. Drawing to express myself and my idea of Architecture has given shape to this selection of works: the common concept behind its contents is the possibility to unleash the potential of each community. Social-conscious projects are my way of recovering a collective imagination, building sustainable objectives for the future.

:

Inspired by the journey around the world that the Earth completes in only 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds, this Portfolio retraces the stages of my ongoing migration. Its structure consists of different scenographies and all of its elements whether touched by design or not - have become part of my research until today.

| zero-carbon mirage | residential project for a smart city in Abu Dhabi

“Masdar City is one of the world’s most sustainable urban communities, a low-carbon development made up of a rapidly growing clean-tech cluster, business free zone and residential neighbourhood with restaurants, shops and public green spaces. It brings together tourists, residents, students, academics, and entrepreneurs in a collaborative environment which allows them to live, work and play sustainably.1

Being part of the studio behind two residential projects in Masdar city gave me an inside look of what a new city constructed from the scratch looks like. In the UAE, a sustainable environment - the so-called smart city - is trying to root in the desert, with the promise to find a new futuristic identity for the country. Urbanism and architecture work together to fill the buildings with harmonious shapes and healthy structures, minimising the use of energy. Masdar is one of the smart cities which are being developed all over the world, connecting buildings, people and infrastructures with technology. The critical nature of emerging landscapes regards the absence of context on which they founded their development. Their origin is a tabula rasa, which leads them to have many opportunities for success as well as for failure during their development and consolidation stages. The ability to arouse international interest represents their main chance of survival: finding a way to achieve a resilient design is the greatest challenge for their contemporary architects and planners.

The city of Masdar belongs to the massive urban planning, design and construction program of the United Arab Emirates. Thanks to the economic boost of the country, urban settlements became the perfect meeting point between international economic investments and urban utopian visions, being the structure of the “Emirate dream in a land that, just twenty years ago, was covered by sand and water. Abu Dhabi aims to appear as a state-of-the-art global capital, thanks to the urban planning of Masdar city, which will act as the flagship project of a zero-emission experimental design with the goal of creating a sustainable working and living environment. Leonardo Buildings 170-units The project focuses on a residential building that features different typologies of apartments and outdoor common areas, close to the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology designed by Foster and Partners. The official beginning for the construction of Leonardo Residences represents a milestone in the realisation of the world’s most sustainable urban development, and a further evidence of the construction progress enacted all around the City. The one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments will be added to the existing footprint of the City, at a walking distance from the Green Finger, a linear park that crosses the urban grid. The purpose of the interior design for the Residences reflects the context and the natural environment. The colour palette mixes up sand and light tones, the furniture is made by sustainable and certified materials and the lighting represents a natural source to live the space until the sun sets.

| re-populating Chicago | community-focused project for Washington Park

"The urban research focuses on new models for densifying cities while rethinking an individual and collective metropolitan experience. The studio explores housing programs as different urban habitats. High-density housing with mixed used additional programs could be an answer to social demands for contemporary ways of living, new working conditions, advanced learning, consumption and leisure time"

M.Arch in Architecture Illinois Institute of Architecture, Chicago studio: SOM, Superpopulated profs: Robert Bracken, Jorge Rovira with Mikel Berra-SandĂn

17

"The SOM studio is focused on repopulating Chicago through transformative design interventions at the scale of the neighborhood. Urban design, architecture and landscape strategies help shrinking communities to capture new residents and opportunities, offering lifestyle alternatives. Competing against conventional suburban and downtown growth models, studio projects delivers distinctive places that challenge the prevailing distribution of community in Chicago." The considered area is Washington Park: its depopulation, due to masses moving to other suburbs, is leaving an empty, unsafe and inactive neighborhood. Therefore, it is necessary to make use of the empty space, regenerating community and economic activity.

Strategies

1 - Fill empty lots

2 - Trust your neighbor

The strategy focuses on land-recycle, using empty lots to create a green network of zero-miles agricultural production. Residents are responsible of their own food-growing and the energy production, creating job opportunities and a sustainable living environment.

The strategy wants to stimulate social interactions encouraging a collective way of living rather than an individualistic one. The cluster typology creates a compact urban block that improves the safety of the neighborhood. Each unit ground floor is design with common spaces and the outdoor area is a community garden.

"how can we repopulate a neighborhood?"

3 - Something new The strategy creates a central catalyst for the community. Along the public transportation axis, a new multi-purpose market takes place in the central street. The open-floor building is designed to host many activities: selling and buying agricultural goods, doing sports, attending cultural events.

By believing in people's ability to create a better future for their community, our proposal focuses on farming, applying it through three different strategies. An energy-producing wheatfield occupies the west border area, while urban gardens are concentrated inside the new residential clusters; both these strategies are linked by a central multi-purpose market that connects the blocks to the neighborhood, creating a safe environment to live in.

An equitable planning should consider high-density mixed scales and places for community life as opportunities to forge strong connections among neighbors. With the establishment of the central market and the plaza, a network of public spaces is designed through the permeable blocks encouraging walking and biking. Designing interventions aims at creating a safe and leafy place to gather together, connected with the city centre by public transportation.

| discovering the mainland | three redevelopment projects around Venice

“If Venice will ever die, it will not be for the invasion of new people. It will be, above all, because of self-forgetfulness. For a community of our time, it does not mean simply forgetting its own history and the glories and defeats of the past. It means the lack of awareness of something that is increasingly evident and necessary: the specific role of each city over the others, its uniqueness and diversity, virtues that no city in the world has as much as Venice.2” This Venetian urban research is mainly focused on the role of the island as a catalyst for new regeneration projects around its arcipelago. The lagoon is crossed by the infrastructure of the “Liberty bridge”: an artificial fingerprint that shows the infinite possibilities of communication between the island and the mainland. Acting as a dialogue between them, the first urban research seeks to find a natural flow of changes and scenarios, moving some - terrain vagues - in Mestre and Marghera. It creates a new link between the abandoned harbour, the garden-city, the train station, the green park and Venice, highlighting the current situation of population loss and short-term tourism consequences. In addition to the urban strategy, two architectural insights are a regeneration manifesto: the first one tries to create a sustainable residential approach for artists and students, while the second one finds a new way of working in Marghera giving residents a reason to stay.

Nowadays the fragile ecosystem that links Venice and its mainland is becoming a dystopian scenario. People are leaving the island turning entire houses and apartments into hotels or b&b. The city is becoming overpriced due to the increasing number of tourists. Students are facing a loss of accommodation opportunities due to the Airbnb formula, which has raised prices and erased a lot of contracts. Private palaces, fancy apartments, luxurious malls are rising everywhere. The first consequence for most residents in the Venetian province is to commute every day to “feed the touristic spots, working in hotels, restaurants, shops and offices.

Warehouses turn into an experimental neighborhood

The VEGA science park in Marghera is a fundamental institution for the lagoon environment’s portection and for research on renewable energy sources. This is why the urban design works on the park expansion, including housing and services areas. The proximity to the university campus offers the possibility of creating a scientific area near Venice.

An experimental neighborhood raises from the industrial heritage, the warehouses load-bearing structure shapes old spaces into new aggregation areas, giving the community the possibility to have a new market area, social housing, green plazas and new creative art venues.

[B]

[D]

The lagoon waterfront metamorphosis

Circulation goes public and pedestrian-friendly

The infrastructure system in Venice mainland calls for a pedestrian-friendly network. A new footbridge is the missing connection between the science park and the new art and music district, hosted by the St.Giuliano’s Park area and Forte Marghera. This allows a public soil to become a new leisure time attraction and a new creative area.

The re-use of old train tracks and some new interchange points make fast mobility mostly public and green: tram and bus connections are increased. Slow mobility takes places all over the new neighborhood thank to the widht-reduction of the carriageway.

The aim of the urban design is to re-think Venice not as the end of a guided tour around the worldy-known scapes, but as just one destination within a wider macrocosm of activities, all part of an amphibious city living between land and water.

| art incubator | three redevelopment projects around Venice

As one of the main projects of the waterfront regeneration, the “Art Incubator meets the temporary residential demand in the Venetian Area, being a strategy to avoid the ongoing diaspora. Acting like an attraction for tourists, students or commuters, the Art incubator puts itself inside the wider perspective of becoming part of a cultural hub. The new district created between the areas of Forte Marghera and Parco San Giuliano has a lot to share with the community: public green open spaces, indoor exhibition venues and ateliers. Aiming to keep up with the creative areas that most of the European cities are nowadays offering to their citizens, the Incubator is located along the park border, directly facing the lagoon. It features a private dock and a pedestrian bridge that links San Giuliano with the Liberty Bridge. The ground floor is open to the public: building A has a library and a restaurant, while building B is a temporary exhibition hall. In the upper floor, a hostel with dorms and private rooms faces the workshop area for artists and students. At the end of the pedestrian bridge, a small auditorium protrudes on the water: its reflection makes the Incubator recognizable from Venice.

| post-industrial scenario | three redevelopment projects around Venice

The industrial heritage of Venice is located in the southern part of the lagoon ecosystem. Empty warehouses, grey chimneys and vacant lots describe an abscence of life, which requires an intervention. Porto Marghera is facing the garden-city: a neighborhood that was constructed to host workers during the last century. With the disappearance of most of the factories and the absence of new projects for the area, the neighborhood has become a dangerous place for its residents. The redevelopment project takes into consideration new points of aggregation and an improvement of the infrastructural system. The studio purpose is a mixed-use building that could offer job opportunities as well as public facilities, giving the community a reason to stay. Each floor hosts different activities: a library, start-up areas, shops, restaurants and meeting rooms. The industrial land becomes a public square where an open-air theatre and an exhibition gallery cross each other. The southern facade "embraces" the garden city, visually connecting the harbour with mixed-used programs, creating a vibrant attraction for residents and commuters.

| Shanghai heteromorphosis | the urban redevelopment of the Expo Area through the acceleration of time This master’s degree thesis paper aims to describe the evolution of Shanghai, one of the world’s most populated cities as well as the epitome for the evolutionary scenarios of China. This work includes an analysis of the socio-economic processes and morphological transformations, which reshaped the boundaries and the skyline of Shanghai. During the last decade, the city and its residents were subjected to a mutation process never seen before, as a result of the wild construction and deconstruction of entire districts: many public spaces as well as the basic concept of their sharing vanished into this overwhelming action. The World Expo area of 2010 is located along the banks of Huangpu river and it is a barycentric axis between the past and the future of Shanghai. As a matter of fact, by catalyzing reflections, projects and processes, the historical event revolutionized the old urbanization methods, hence shifting the critical interest of experts toward sensitive issues, such as public space and sustainability. The expectations related to this magnificent event were clearly represented by the motto “Better city, better life”. This slogan is a thematic parallelism able to recall the intent of Chinese authorities to awaken the great urban machine, in order to address the needs of an ever-growing population. Such an event of universal proportions is a generator of expectations, ideas and investments, as well as a repository of material and immaterial inheritances. Therefore, its actual role within the city starts from its closing ceremony. After almost ten years since the closing of its gates, the Shanghai Expo Site still covers a total area of 5,28 square kilometers. However, despite being part of the riverfront ecosystem, it no longer has an active role in its development. In fact, the Expo passed from being an instrument for territorial promotion to becoming an unproductive land, as a result of the absence of an effective reuse project. This, therefore, led to the establishment of a barrier between the residents and the riverbanks. The intent of the project is to rebuild a space for everyone: a physical dimension where travelers, workers and residents can meet, a place able to connect the legacy of Expo 2010 with the new opportunities for aggregation and the new activities. A city does not remain, a city moves and evolves, innovating itself. This thesis has the ambitious purpose of generating new possibilities of cooperation between the city and its citizens, while being able to create a vibrant environment, by developing both life and public space quality.

From past to present: every time the political structure of a country changes, it brings transformations within its society causing a total rethinking of the urban question: by following this logic, the system of evolution, planning and fragmentation of Shanghai can be seen as the answer derived from its political and territorial mutations. Mutations provide us the essential reading-key for the comprehension of the metropolis: Shanghai has always been the “head of the Dragon” in the Chinese global vision. It is an experimentation hub for urban design and big-time political moves as well as the first basis of settlement of the Western culture in the country. The five-year plans enacted in the last twenty years of Chinese politics can be summarised in the urban strategy which goes under the name of 01SHMP (Shanghai Masterplan 1999-2020, approved in year 2001 by the State Council of the Chinese Government). According to this plan, the developed surface saw an increase of the 93,3% in just one decade. The five main points of the Masterplan are: China opening to the world, the emphasis between the city and its suburbs toward an idea of multilevel and multidirectional metropolis, the unified and coordinated development of all the components of the city, the orientation of the city toward a human scale by improving the condition of the natural environment and the sustainable development of its residential areas, as well as the preservation of its cultural heritage. These objectives clearly descri-

13

be the shift of direction for a sustainable expansion of society and environment, aiming at localizing opportunities in satellite zones and improving their communication with the city center. The infrastructure network is implemented accordingly to the slogan “three ports (seaport, airport and IT hub) and two roads (railways and highways)”. One of the most relevant subthemes of the 01SHMP plan can be found in the promotion of the new axis Puxi-Pudong, with the World's Exposition having a leading role. The project is called “harmonious city”, referring to a polis with housing and environmental standards which are sustainable in each of its parts. The urban models developed in this period haven’t just brought Shanghai to the fore in the economic and tourism sector, but they have also made it a leading force in the rise of the whole country. 1990 2000 2015

1 - Lujiazui, the financial heart of Shanghai, is a peninsula of skyscrapers and luxury hotels that faces the Huangpu River. The regeneration of its shores welcomes workers and the most curious to a new linear park. From here it is possible to enjoy the mix of architecture and open spaces and access panoramic tours along the river. The linear park is thus enriched with services and refreshment points, especially experienced during the morning and lunch-breaks. New points of interest, such as museums and galleries, are being planned. 2 - The Bund is the most recognizable public space in Shanghai. It forms the border between the colonial commercial strip and the Huangpu river. From the promenade it is possible to observe the financial center of Lujiazui and its world's famous city lights. The riverside is characterized by little commercial points to guarantee its use during the day and the evening. The access to the promenade is ensured by Nanjing Road, a commercial strip that crosses the Old city, and by parallel roads, which are home to refreshment points and administrative services. 3 - A green corridor in the southern side of Shanghai links the Houtan Park to the residential areas of the Pudong New Area district. Here, the commercial establishments of Expo 2010 are located with offices, museums and conference centers. Its accessibility is therefore linked to fixed timetables and is now fragmented, precluding its use to citizens and visitors. The objective is to integrate the area with the city returning to the public dimension of its functions and activities.

3 - World’s expo park, leisure corridor Challenges: 1 - Inhuman scale: the area is divided into urban blocks that fragment the territory. The "out of scale" dimension increases the perceived distance between the residential area and the riverfront. 2 - Blank spaces: the area that housed the satellite parking lots at the exhibition park is still today a space looking for a function. It creates a barrier between cities and citizens due to its fences and inaccessibility. 3 - Between private and public: after the closure of the World's Exposition, many urban blocks have undergone a change of ownership, by being sold and turned into museums, exhibition galleries and convention centers. As a consequence, they only became private actors of change. Strategies: The idea of creating a public space facing the river has been elaborated following two strategic axis and putting emphasis on the residual voids which lost attractiveness through time. The urban intervention is necessary to recover the relation among the different intended uses of the neighborhood, opening the landscape to an architectural intervention, whose final purpose is leading it to a dialogue with Huangpu on different directions. If we consider the possibility of a neighborhood reactivation only led by the presence of multiple users throughout the different moments of the day, then the architectural intervention has to be founded on new locations, which act as catalysts of the community. The slow mobility can find direct and indirect paths characterized by both pre-existent and brand-new attractive poles.

F

Masterplan: 1

5

The project area is focused on the concept of accessibility and regeneration. All the built components and social opportunities that overlook the waterfront are converted in new spaces of aggregation, aiming at bringing more than just a commercial use to the area. Thus, its regeneration’s main purpose is to regain the sense of – riverfront – as a common good. This is why it is necessary to focus efforts on its possible multi-level connection, by moving the residential and commercial blocks and restitching the pre-existent infrastructure.

53

"In cities, abandoned built heritage sometimes represent an overwhelming burden, caused by the unstable and inconsistent economic policies and by the rapid social mutations of the current millennium. To a keen eye, the city appears as a living being, with its own metabolism: it is an entity which feeds itself, changes and produces waste through a mighty and unrestrainable process, till the point of becoming a truly oppressive presence. There are several reasons why cities behave in this way: excess of development, abandonment, natural disasters. They represent elements of discontinuity in time and space, becoming sometimes emblematic and inhospitable places. Terrain-vagues are the new archetypes of the urban metamorphosis. We should try to change their behaviour through a continuous research of meaning and balance, to reach a new concrete recognizability producing structuring and strategic scenarios.4” With the establishment of two main green axis, a network of public spaces is designed throughout the urban blocks encouraging the discovery of the area. This creates a place to gather together, from the morning to the night, offering different indoor and outdoor activities.
