Gianluca, italian architect born and raised in Sicily, before moving to Turin, Italy. Always driven by curiosity. After four years of experience, I learnt how to project spaces, with particular attention on interior, lighting and its details. I believe in the power of people, of knowledge and discovery.

three tools for Ticinum
competition - 2022
The project is based on a dualistic design approach: on one side, the aim to preserve the tectonics of the Hangar and its rigid concrete grid; on the other side, the triggering of three tools: tower, tunnel, and platform. The tower calls back to the tradition of Pavia’s medieval towers and, looking towards the city on the north-east side, the project offers the chance to discover it from above. The horizontal tool - the tunnel - has an inherently urban value: it links the Hangar with the land, defining a telescope which frames the opposite bank of the river. Moreover, the platform has a purely functional value: thanks to its movements, it gives the possibility to shape the space according to the needs, and so, to generate different configurations. The spatial and functional tripartition is also perceptible from the outside. The first span, together with the addition of the tower and the tunnel, hosts all the logistic spaces: the entrance, the lobby and the vertical distribution. It has a strong material character given by the existing cladding, as well as the metallic mesh of the tower and the reflecting finish of the tunnel. The central part corresponds to the heart of the project and it’s where all the main functions are placed. The new polycarbonate panels can be opened according to the hangars’ openings, and they spread the light like a lantern on the waters of Ticino river. Instead, the last span totally lists its materiality because the original facade is substituted by glass panels that open the view on the countryside.

terroir
academic - 2020
The aim of the work is to analyze and understand the territory in order to propose an architectural project based on the improvement and proper exploitation of the resources. This work, once carefully explored the region and in particular its traditions, wants to reinterpret in a new modern key these traditions and make them the driving force and the reason to come back to live in these places. The use of the stone, the attention to the ruins as a respect for the earthquake, or even the transcendent traditions linked to festivities and cults, are all elements of a proposal which can be integrated completely in these places. Thus, the work done doesn’t just want to be limited to a simple planning exercise in the urban tissue of Salemi historical city centre, but aims to propose a different and experimental approach based on the identity of the inland territories and through a lecture in a contemporary key of the tradition that may create a new opportunity not just for Salemi, but for all the similar realities looking for a vindication.

shanghai joint studio
academic - 2019
Shanghai joint studio, as the name says, has been a studio made by Politecnico di Torino, Florence university and Tongji university, with the aim of analyzing the italian pavillion (made by G. Imbrighi) in the expo area built during the expo 2010 in Shanghai, China. The team worked on the idea of regiving life to the pavillion, in order to host people and citizens, as requested by the italian consulate. The project has been conceived as a re-use project, because it worked on the existing envelope and on the interior concept. A regular grid made by steel and glass gives to the pavillion a new envelope that becomes a new facade. The steel structure hosts an art gallery, linked to the existing floors. The project has been presented in Shanghai to the municipality and to the italian consulate.

the responsive habitat
competition - 2021
Architecture must be able to guide man and adapt to changing scenarios. Responsive habitat represents a new a way of living and building a place that feels like home. Made by a X-lam structure, covered with iron sheets, in the inside it feels cozy and warm, while in the exterior, the black metal sheet defends and adapts to the place where it is located. It is composed by three simple units, that recall primitive shelters and that can be linked, switched or divided, adapting itself to the people that live it. Different layouts help to find the best way to compose the shelter, that after the right combo will be put on wheels in order to be moved wherever there’s the need. Big glass surfaces on walls and roof make light come through the whole unit, creating a connection between people and landscape. Responsive habitat can host from one to four people, in fact with the help of heights, the mattress of the bedroom is located on an upper level that give more livable space and gives more privacy. Be free, be responsive.

avigliana, scenic space
scientific research - 2021
Avigliana, a city in the Piedmont region (italy) has always been seen as a city of lakes, due to the presence of two big lakes. During the years, the ancient castle that watches from the above all the city, has become a ruin and so did the path that brings to it. The studio, made with the Politenico di Torino and the municipalty of Avigliana, wants to study this path in order to give again this place to the city, in order to make it live again and to transform it into a tourist pole. The work aims to analyze the territory, its connections and the city. The work has been characterized by the use of drones in order to gain an overall image of the area, and to produce a first phase of the work, as requested by the municipality.

G house
work - 2021
This work consists in renovating an old style home, combining the ancient features of the house with the ideas of a young lady. The house is located in a particular value context within the urban fabric of Turin. The project consider everything and tries to mantain the character of the house, mantaining for example all the doors frames or the ancient wooden pavements. The sensitivity of the client towards this project led to the research and acquisition of elements of artistic value, consistent with the original matrix, to be included in the “rediscovered” image of the house. The interior spaces project aimed at bringing back balance and order to the plans, eliminating the superfluous wall partitions, remedying the formal inconsistencies, consolidating the load-bearing elements and working with building-friendly finishing materials.
