EIGHT BIT DEBONED

Eight-Bit Deboned was composed and played using a tracker (Oktalizer 1.0) on an Amiga 500 between december 1988 and january 1989. With this set I composed 14 songs about people moods and travels, then I packed all on a HD floppy in mod format, with a mod player enclosed. The resulting sound vaguely reminds of Residents or Fred Frith. Technical limitations (only 8 mono tracks) gave him a minimal taste, between 70’s 8-bit videogame music and freak industrial. In October 2008 I found a copy and decided to reissue it. On Amiga I tried to reconstruct songs (all had errors and missing or damaged sounds), I substituted some samples such Malcom X on Friend and Enemies or a few voices in Luke’s Travel. At the end I recovered only 10 tracks.

OUTSKIRT

Outskirt is a concept album on low populated areas, or at least far from centre. All the record is ever changin’ genres from song to song: • Sigma Hydrae is a 3 minute groove between contemporary and space rock • Møre og Romsdal is an avant rock/technical death metal hybrid • Reidsville, NC is post-rock, but seen from a country point of view • Giant Star Antares electronic kraut rock à la Kraftwerk • LaGuardia 3:00 AM between jazz rock and progressive • Zimniy Dvorets a romantic classical piece for 4 pianos • Thar Desert is same time Chic and Contortions funky • Junction Box pure electronics • Belief suite is winding between R.I.O. and avantgarde, except for Sloth (synthpop) and Pride (latin) • Pet’s Repository is punk progressive (I could say skeleton progressive).

ÉTOILE

It’s a concept album about stars – both intended as prima ballerinas and celestial bodies – and their issues.

released: 04 July 2009 tracks: 13 lenght: 00:40:38

DOWNLOADS:

Genre is a series of mixes with world music, symphonic progressive, a bit of contemporary and kraut electronics, always with the free approach of Rock in Opposition tradition (from Zappa to Henry Cow): sometime resulting in complex structures with mindbending pairings of melodies and subtle detuned arrangments. Étoile starts with a Residents-like intro sung by a couple of real pigs, then a piece of math/art rock, sounding like a too dry death metal. Then from Rhythmbox the record begins wedging prog, contemporary, world and electronics.

NOTES This record is a brief journey through Dada art movement. Opening track is dedicated to Cabaret Voltaire, a swiss nightclub where all started by a group of european artists. First founder, and subject of second track, was Hugo Ball (he wrote the small poem I-Zimbra, which was subsequently used as a lyrics by Talking Heads in their namesake song). Hence continues the portrait gallery of Dadaists, interrupted sometimes by three small tracks called Shiver. To people with few, or no knowledge about dadaists, reading the booklet is strongly recommended.

MOCK THRILL

Mock Thrill is a record about suffer, solitude and hypocrisy, and it’s dedicated to people who are or feel stump. Mock is a guy who’s born with a malformation: he has no limbs. So the only happy moment of his life is into the womb, when floating in limbo (first track), and it makes no difference for him having or not legs and arms. His birth ends in a metallic clang: life entering shock. At the restaurant he’s still a baby, but perceive people pretending they’re not noticing his deformity. A taste of false piety. There is a brief episode when aunt Jamima don’t realize he fell from the electric wheelchair – he’s desperate because he can’t get up, feels stuck and helpless, useless. Then in Abandoned Dog Afternoon he lives one of the innumerable afternoons lying on the couch like a broken doll, ridiculously bored and slowly going mad. In one of these afternoon, he’s catched by a Butterfly flight, so he has a beam of simple beauty and somewhat forget for a while about him, forced by solitude to face himself day by day he quits his (sad) solipsism. He refuses to see the new false friends when he’s a teenager (Please Do not Want to Know Nice Fake New Friends), distrust of others who obviously consider him a “monster”. But one day he knows Eddie, a friend who does not seem to think he’s an “useless stump”, as bad kids called Mock. They become rapidly friends, and start to have experiences together: they have a trip (Eddy Gave me a Coriander), then they go to see an art exhibition (Me and Eddy at an Art Exhibition), in short, everything’s great now. Suddenly, Eddy knows a brasilian girl cruising nightlife and start to get “unavailable” , too busy… and while he’s busy, Mock start to become paranoid. He’s right, Eddy disappear forever. So Mock get back to his bloody couch again and again. And we see, at the end of this record, when Mock’s mind collapses and goes totally mad (Blast of Fury).

IL CAVALLO SPAIATO

Il Cavallo Spaiato is about schizophrenia, music is quite lunatic and moves continuously from avant-prog to glitch/jungle/hardtek, like two clashing identities in same body. Song Flipback is inspired by italian showgirl (and icon) Raffaella Carrà and her super-mainstream songs, particularly “Ma Che Musica Maestro”. Of course results are less commercial. I also made a bebop/avant rework on Jeux d’Eau by Maurice Ravel.

MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology, proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper “A Theory of Human Motivation.” Maslow subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of humans’ innate curiosity. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, all of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans. Maslow use the terms Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and Love, Esteem, and Self-Actualization needs to describe the pattern that human motivations generally move through.

TORTOISE ATTEMPTS TO ESCAPE BECAUSE FUCK YOU, THAT’S WHY

The record’s theme is this famous meme I used as album cover, so it’s a record about an entity caged and in the need to escape. A return to a less friendly musical approach after last “melodic” records. First song is pure noise and, track by track, music goes just a little more listenable with Whatever I Do Is Wrong and Sleeping in a Dorm, but then it turns again to idiosyncratical ambients.

Dead Hox was born in 2015, due to a pain I have not yet passed. I had to spit out negative thoughts and suffer through a music that should be even too much “disturbing” into the wide range of styles I use in Hox Vox. It’s sometimes, somehow, similar to Turbogrind Terrorizers in violence, despite it doesn’t point often to extreme speed and it’s more on jungle/hardcore than cybergrind. I make use here of concrete music, noise, field recording, so it’s my most “abstract” music project.

WRECK UP turned around prog / avant prog / funky / psychedelia. I knew David Preston in Apskaft collective, he played with Res Band, a combo from Derby (UK) making impro by mixing many different genres and styles; blues, post rock, of course jam rock, avant rock, brit pop (!), and they also made some excursions in electronics, or definitely outside classic rock (jazz for instance). We started to appreciate each other music, so at a certain point we decided to try to play toghether. We had issues at the start by using different DAWs, but we got rid of them and made first EP, called WRECK UP. After that we made a couple of singles that were used in Apskaft compilations (THE DARK SIDE OF THE MONKEY, parody cover album of The Dark Side of the Moon, and a song for a tribute album to They Might Be Giants, but despite we never disbanded, and we had absolutely no problems in making mosic together, we couldn’t go on with other records. The project is more in stand-by than on hiatus. It could restart in any moment.

TURBOGRIND TERRORIZERS at the start was a side project of Hox Vox, where I wanted to experiment to compose music into the cybergrind/lolicore/ grindcore area. I made a single (Turbogrind Terrorizers / Obama is Dead Again) with all the elements I wanted to use (incredibly fast tempos, from 320 to 800 bpm, funky basses, metal guitars, insane industrial electronics, humour). This grasped the attention of a few mates in Apskaft collective. first was Vince Gauthier, with him I made second single of Turbogrind Terrorizers, at that point the band became a duo. Jason Kavanagh (with him I made also another band for the short span of a single audio-video project, the Blasted Muffins) joined just after the second single, and Neil Morrison before first (and only) album. For different reasons right after first album all of three lost rapidly interest in this project: private issues; a new band more fitting their needs, in the case of Vincent and Neil; maybe they thought we have exhausted what we might say in such a project. The further compilation of 80’s covers just enlightened the issue; we had to make about 20 covers but it was hard to reach 7, and I made 5 of them. At the end of this “record” I returned to a solo side project, and made last record, ENTER THE BASE. Now the band is on hiatus.

THE BLASTED MUFFINS was a short-span experience, but very interesting both in building our single work, and the satisfaction about the final result. All started on a joke about a picture turned in negative of Jason, that looked like a white haired black, as you can see by these poctures. I made the pun “Goodspeed you, chocolate albino!” and said we should make a record with such an album title. This thing went beyond the joke; we started to think how to make a modular record, where we made kind of conversation using songs and videos. So Jason made 1st and all the odd videotracks, I made the even ones starting from 2nd. Every song was written, apart first one, as an answer to the former, it was kind of crazy dialog through puns, calembours, jokes. Music and video are surreal and contaminated by dozens of influences and disturbing - on purpose - elements, to push the listener in continuous doubt and unease, while we had fun in throwing refers and see how each other could manage them. In enclose this into records, but its best fruition is by watching the youtube videoclip, images are often fundamental to understand what’s going on in all that mess. The Sound of Apskaft is a collective of DIY avant-garde artists from all over the world, founded in 2007 by Jonas Lind. I started to cooperate with them in 2009 and have been the group leader from 2011 to 2013. We made great collective records, some videoclips and a great project: a new soundtrack for Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin. This first part of interview from APSKAFTERS #1 explains well what went on in the collective. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hox: Hi Jonas, despite it’s quite banal I must start with a clichè: can you tell us what pushed you to create The Sound of Apskaft? When you started this project did you imagine it could last so long? Jonas: Well, if memory serves – and I must warn you that I have a terrible memory – it happened shortly after Apskaft itself was created. There were very few of us back then, maybe 15 people, and we had this vague and unstructured idea of making cover versions of songs we picked out for each other. Me and a couple of friends had been talking about this even before Apskaft existed, but we weren’t that serious about it. But the cover project started to happen, and I thought that since it happened within this group, we may as well start a label to go with the group, where we could release this cover album. So I founded The Sound Of Apskaft – an obvious reference to The Sound Of Music you may think, but I actually stole the name from an album by a Swedish band called The Mopeds, “The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Mopeds”. That’s why it says “the hills are alive with The Sound Of Apskaft” in the logo. Anyway, I thought this would be a one-off thing, but the cover project was so much fun that we decided to make the first “Apskaft Presents” album shortly after that. And the rest, as they say, is history. Hox: So you had kind of collective approach to music since from the start? I say that because you play in many bands, push for various artists records, seems like you find yourself better if you make music with a lot of people… Jonas: Yeah, there was a sense of collectiveness (if that’s even a word) from the beginning. You know, at first there were only three of us, friends from an old chat room. All of us made music under various monikers, and we created Apskaft as a forum for discussing our own personal music projects with each other. What we didn’t count on was that other DIYers would join the group – we thought no one else would be interested in what we did. We were wrong. I still prefer to make music on my own, or in small combos, but every one man band (and I have sooo many of them) needs an audience, needs feedback. And what better audience could you wish for than other DIYers? People who understand what it’s like to come up with songs whilst in the shower and record them in the bedroom? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------All the records by THE SOUND OF APSKAFT are available here on Bandcamp
