Visual styles and gameplay mechanics in Games


Borderlands 2

Perspective

Borderlands 2 uses a first person perspective in which you play as a chatacter which roams Visual style through the world ficticioua world of pandora to complete quests and try to defeat Borderlands 2 uses a cel-shaded visual the main enemy (Handsome Jack). This is a style. This makes the game look very cargood persepctive for this type of game as toony. This art style works with the gameif it was in third person the player would play of borderlands as it is very jokey and be less imersed in the gameplay and charhas an enjoyable feel to it, which is accomacter as you would feel as if you were just panied by the cel-shaded art style. controlling a puppet instead of a person.

Full motion video Full motion video is used alot in Borderlands ususally to introduce both the mini bosses in a level and to show the character teh layout of the area they are in.

Characters In borderlands they have there 4 characters that you can choose to play as. All of these characters have there own special abilities which add to there character and gameplay.

For example, one charcter special move is the ability to wield 2 weapons for a short time allowing the character to give out a lot of damage over a small period of time.

These cutscenes allow these cutscenes add to the gameplay by expanding on the and gameplay by fleshing out ideas that are explaind briefly during the game. This is done by giving information on areas and the mini boss that is in them.


Feedback INterface Feedback interface is used in borderlands to give a physical response in a game controller to when teh player has been shot or has used there special ability. The reason there is a feedback in a the controller when you use you special power is to show you that you character is using alot of power to use there special ability.

Gameplay Gameplay Mechanics One good gameplay elements of borderlands 2 is the ability to get thousands of different guns. This allows for variety of gameplay between everyone who plays the game. Each weapon also offers a unique ability that may come with the class of weapon or just that weapon itself. E.g. Tediore weapons are thrown when they need reloading and then exploded on impact with enemies, once the weapon has exploded a fully reloaded gun will spawn in the players hand

The game also has a skill tree, which can be progressed by gaining experience during the missions and killing enemies. This skill tree allows the player to upgrade certain skills such as their special attack, reload speed,fire rate and melee strength. This allows the player to build on there character and therefore make the quests and levels easier for them in the future. The enemies however will progress in levels as you progress through the story.

So it won’t make it easier for long.

Interactive Model The interactive model of borderlands is a Human character. These character take a human form but are almost aliensa s they have the baility to use powers like telepathy and invisibility. These characters can be seen as teh hero type character as they are there to save the day when it needs to be saved. E.g. stopping Handsome jack from opening the vault again.

Player actions In borderlands the players actions is to shoot and kill enemies as they progress through the level to complete quests and objectives whihc are set ny NPC’s through out the different areas in the game.


COD Ghosts Visual style The Call of duty franchise uses a very photo realistic visual style, this allows the game to look very realistic and means that the player can relate to the scene a lot more and will feel more immersed. This works well with Call of duty as the game as it is a first person shooter in which you play as a soldier who is supposed to complete objectives depending on the game mode.

Perspective COD is a typical first person shooter franchise and always uses teh first peson perspective as the game is always about shooting to win. The setting is different but the way you get to the final goal is usually the same. This does however work very well for the game as is has sold millions of copies and is one of the most well known first person shooters around.

Full motion video Full motion video is used alot in Ghosts. It is usually used to transition between levels and to add more information into the story. This usually involves the player being with a higer up person who is telling them brief for there next mission or giving them a plan of action for the mission they are currently on. These cutscenes can also show your unit entering or flying into an area where you will be completing a misson.

Characters In COD:Ghosts there is only one character that you can play as. In the online game you dont really learn about the main character as it is just a puppet that you use to shoot enemies and gain the highest score possible. Whereas in the single player you learn what the main characters role is and what they are set out to do. You also learn about there past and also what happens in there future as you progress through it with them.

Feedback interface is used alot in Ghosts to represent the character taking damage form a bullet or explosion. It is basically used to show that the player has taken damage in any way.

Kill streaks are earned by killing people in succession without dying. This can make the player feel awarded for doing well in the game.

missions which are set the unit leader. These missions are there to get information on the final goal which needs to be copleted. These missions usually involve killing people to get to the end of the mission where they player will have to collect information, kill a leader or access an area.

Another gameplay mechanic is the levelling system. This also rewards the player by giving them new and improved weapons when they progress through the levels. This allows for new gameplay as the player uses new weapons.

Some missions however may be stealth missions where the player has to be as elusive as possible and try not to draw any attention to themselves. The end goal of these missions is usually always to gain information for future missions.

Interactive Model The interactive model of COD:Ghosts is a soldier that is set out to fight for a special unit called “Ghosts” This character is a Generic soldier. His life and character is expanded on in the Gameplay but is not expanded on anywhere near as much as other games like in Assasins creed. This does make the character seem more mysterious which works well with the fact that
