Hand blown glass art in Eureka, CA For over 15 years, John Gibbons has been creating fine art glass objects. From single starfish to sculptural vases, each piece is skillfully hand sculpted by John in Eureka, CA using equipment and tools that he fabricated himself. The quality, detail and craftsmanship of John Gibbons Glass is proven in every piece.
In his artwork, John recreates the movement, colors and creatures of the ocean. He transforms the cold, craggy northern coasts and tropical warm waters of the oceans into the earthy tide pool greens and glowing aquas that his work is known for, including detailed glass vessels with starfish clinging to the sides, turtles riding on optical waves, and starfish clustered together in the shape of a crown. His latest ocean creations include octopus, dolphins, and ocean current vases.

Starfish Clusters
The Starfish Cluster is a sculptural glass vase made with a lattice of starfish surrounding a clear glass bowl. Each starfish is hand sculpted without the use of molds, making each sculpture unique. The vibrant colors draw you into the depths, while the thick layer of clear glass make the starfish appear as though they are wet from being pulled out of the ocean. Each piece is unique and will vary. These are John’s most popular sculptures.

Starfish Barnacle Starfish
Another layer of glass is added to these optical Barnacle Starfish. In the glass making process, the optical tubes of color begin as a mass of molten glass on the end of a metal rod. Unique color patterns are added to the glass, then it is stretched into pencil thick cane. After cooling for a day, the cane is cut to reveal cross sections about a quarter inch long. Finally, the cane is arranged on a hot plate to be melted into the starfish.

Turtles
Similar to the starfish, the Turtles have an optical and wet appearance from the layer of clear glass added to the shell. The front fins of the turtle are bent upwards as though it is swimming, creating animation.

Named for the dizzy feeling some people get when viewing these vases, the Vertigo effect is achieved by cutting small glass rods and arranging them into a pattern.
