his year we proudly celebrate 70 years of service to the businesses and communities of West Los angeles. Founded in 1945 as the “Businessman's association of rancho Park,” its focus was to organize local business owners and to identify opportunities to provide products and services to each other and to other business communities within the fast growing Los angeles megalopolis. By 1989 the association had grown, serving other communities in West Los angeles, and changing its name to the Westside Chamber of Commerce, to reflect a larger geographic area. In 1993 the Chamber again reorganized as the West Los angeles Chamber of Commerce to serve the specific interests of West Los angeles. and, in 1996 and 2000 the Chamber merged with other groups to further increase its size, its strength, and to better promote local business growth and development.

or the record: “The Westside” is a region of the City of Los angeles comprised of twenty-five neighborhoods and independent cities including the beaches, Culver City and Beverly hills. “West Los angeles” is the twelve neighborhoods represented by the West Los angeles Chamber of Commerce. They are: Beverlywood, Brentwood/Brentwood Village, Cheviot hills, mar Vista/Westdale, Palms, rancho Park, Sawtelle, Veterans administration, Westside Village, West La (Proper), Westwood, and Westwood Village.

In these twelve neighborhoods there are 20,000 businesses, 245,000 residents, and as many jobs. millions of people come here each year to study, shop, play, dine, worship, sightsee, receive services, visit and invest. Billions of dollars are generated each year, in every conceivable industry. Seventeen foreign governments have Consulate Generals or embassies here, and West La is home to the Wilshire Federal Building, uCLa and myriad public schools, private schools and educational facilities.

In the pages that follow are articles about West Los angeles' twelve neighborhoods, told by people who live here, work here and own businesses here. historical vignettes have been added for perspective, as well as the most current vital statistics. West LA's First Businesspeople

est Los Angeles is the ancestral and current spiritual home of the Tongva Nation.* Dating back to their arrival in 1,500 B.C.E., they were West LA's first businesspeople, trading with neighboring tribes, like the Chumash in “Malibu” (the Chumash word for “loud surf”). Several Tongva language words remain a part of everyday life in Southern California. Places like: Pacoima (“the entrance”), Topanga (“the point of the mountain range that ends there at the sea”), Tujunga (“rock shaped like an old woman”), Cucamonga (“I shuﬄe my feet on the ground”) and Cahuenga (“mountain”) are all Tongva. Santa Monica just opened Tongva Park last year at Ocean Avenue and Moomat Ahiko (“breath of the ocean”).

WEST LA HISTORY

The center of all Tongva life was the Kuruvungna, sweet water springs which continuously flow, even during the most severe droughts. Located on the campus of University High School, the Kuruvungna Sacred Springs has been known only to the members of the Tongva Nation, students and a few neighbors. A vast cache of artifacts was discovered during a recent renovation of the school. They are on display at the Kuruvungna Springs Cultural Center and Museum; open the first Saturday of the month from 10AM–3PM. When the T-Ball coach called out sick, rather than disappoint the kids, I stepped in and coached in high heels and a skirt. Now I always keep a change of clothes and shoes in my car!

The city offers adult sports leagues through the City's municipal Sports office. adults may permit out the fields and baseball diamonds for private leagues and teams. The tennis facilities are open for both public use and private lessons, and during the summer, the pool offers various classes and opportunities for lap swim and lessons. In addition to two full-size, outdoor basketball courts, open Gym is available on the indoor basketball court several times throughout the week. Jazzercise is offered for adults of various abilities and activity levels. additionally, there is an archery range and Petanque courts located at the northwest corner of the facility.‡ Finally, the golf course adjacent to the park offers a challenge for players of all ages. WLA: What is your family's connection to WLA's Recreation Centers and Parks? Laura: my mother and her 5 siblings moved to the area in the 1940s. They spent their free time playing in the park and watching the 4th of July fireworks. my mom volunteered at registration and special events. She registered me and my sisters for everything from preschool to ballet to softball. When I was a junior in high school, I started working at the recreational center part-time and continued to do so until I earned my degree from CSuN. my sisters and some cousins took similar paths working in the camps and teaching classes for children during the school year.

WLA: What is your favorite part of the Cheviot Hills Rec. Center? Laura: The hill Picnic area and outdoor Stage. I have fond memories of camp BBQs and participating in small drama productions when I was growing up. The stage is a unique feature and there aren’t too many still around.

Laura: registration for all four Cheviot hills camps begins in early april and ends when camp is full. Whether your child is into sports, musical theater or is looking for a general camp experience; there is something for children ages 5-15. anyone can register for camp at Cheviot hills regardless of where they reside. The camp attracts campers from all over the city and welcomes campers from other countries. WLA: When President Obama and Cheviot Hills resident George Clooney played basketball against Tobey Maguire and others on your court, who trash-talked the most?

FADE IN: A CHARMING SUBURBAN HOME

n September 15, 1936, American Legion post commander C. D. “Ace” Aseltine launched a drive to establish a huge recreation park on the site of the bankrupt Rancho Country Club. After years of effort, the private Rancho Country Club became the public Rancho Park Golf Course and the balance of the land was converted into the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center.* Being so close to the studios, Cheviot Hills has been (and is today) the home of many celebrities. The streets and homes have been used countless times as locations for movies and TV, going all the way back to Laurel & Hardy. Today, the house at 10336 Dunleer Drive has one of the most famous façades in the world, as the home of the Dunphys on TV’s Modern Family. *Editor's Note: For more information, see the Then & Now sidebar about Bill Heyler on P. 24.

Laura: While I was not there, the current director did have the opportunity to meet the President and the other celebrities after the game. he said they were all very friendly and happy to have been able to shoot hoops with the PotuS. But what happens on the court stays on the court! Six years earlier (1857), the former mayor of Los Angeles, Benjamin D. Wilson foreclosed on a $1,500 debt owed to him by Tomas Talamantes (one of the Mexican land grantees) and took 3,450 acres of his land. Two years later, Wilson “flipped it” in a sale to George A. Sanford for $5,000 (a tidy 333% ROI).

In just the last few years, Chef kalissa krejcik has made a huge impact in Palms, adding her enthusiasm, love of food and 26 years of industry experience to the neighborhood. She is a mother of two boys, nicknamed “the Chicken” and “the monkey,” who lend their nick-monikers to her bakery-restaurant, C & m Café. to describe it, is to describe your darkest, most sensuous food fantasies. a lava lamp twist on classic american diner food that is sure to stomp any and all food cravings into sweet/salty/fatty/savory submission.

WLA: What are the people of Palms like?

In addition to the 24/7 grind of entrepreneurship and parenting, Chef kalissa is a staple at the motor avenue Farmers' market, working directly with farmers to bring the best of the seasonal harvest to the plate. She has just launched alegria Gourmet Food truck, a fresh, healthy alternative to greasy taco-and-burger coach fare. She has given a lot of love to Palms, and Palms loves her back.

Chef: I listen to the universe. When I came here for the first time I just coveted it. When the opportunity came to take this space, I just knew it was right. It's an exciting and evolving neighborhood. I just love it.

Chef: Very diverse—all walks of life. There are a lot of families, groups of hipsters, and businesspeople. You have to be a little different to be here. The one common thread is that the people of Palms are happy. everyone is very open; people in my dining room just seem to get into each others' conversations. It's not like that everywhere. WLA: It's apparent when you walk into C & M Café that it's more than a restaurant, it's a brand. Will you develop any products? Chef: Yes! I'm making my own milks, juices and yogurts. I make coconut milk, almond milk, fresh juices and fresh Greek yogurt—all from scratch. my new green juice, that I call “The Green miracle” is something that everyone should taste. The neighborhood markets and convenience stores can't get it any fresher than from right here. The difference in taste is night-and-day compared to what they're selling now, so that's where I want to be.

WLA: Your food is crazy-good! Where do you come up with your menu ideas? Chef: I am a slave to my cravings. every day, all day, all I eat is what I crave. If I can't find it, then I will either create it or I just won't eat. This menu is all about what I gotta' have NoW. When I'm eating, I'm thinking about what I'm going to eat next, and how I'm going to balance it out. I'm obsessed with the mix of breakfast and lunch, I'm obsessed with handhelds —a complete, great tasting meal that you can hold in one hand while working with the other, and I'm obsessed with being able to pick something up on the run. WLA: How important is the Motor Ave. Farmers' Market? Chef: Very important. The founder, Lee Wallach, has done an amazing job. I get most of my produce from the Farmers' market; I have standing orders with the farmers themselves. I get all of my organic herbs, berries, eggs—even my flowers

from the Farmers' market. I don't have an account with a wholesale produce company anymore. I can't get the same quality, consistency, prices or service from them. The farmers care about their business like I care about mine. my customers pick menu items that they know come from the Farmers' market. It is truly a community gathering place; you feel the energy, and it's amazing. I hope that more chefs catch on. WLA: Are you catering a lot of events in Palms? Chef: I do a lot of office lunch catering for banks, travel agencies, production companies, and lots of doctors' offices. We've done a lot of teachers' luncheons at the end of the year, and as a mother, I do anything I can to help the people who shape the lives of our children. WLA: What would you improve about Palms? Chef: traffic. The timing with lights needs to be improved and National Boulevard is not very well signed. The off ramps are

West LA's Oldest Neighborhood “The Palms,” West LA's oldest city, was founded in 1886 around the tracks of the Los Angeles & Independence Railroad.* The developers planted trees, especially palms around the railroad station to entice newcomers looking to buy land. After years of fighting against annexation during LA's decades-long battle over water rights, The Palms merged with Los Angeles in 1915, and became commonly known as just “Palms.” Packed between Rancho Park, Cheviot Hills, Culver City, Mar Vista and Sawtelle, little wedge-shaped Palms has one of the highest population densities in LA. Unexpected in a place that has a whopping 22,000 people per square mile (1,276 square feet per person), Palms locals are relaxed, friendly and sociable, often chilling out in parks and third-place businesses. Reflected in the food and cultural scene, Palms is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in LA. Whites, largely of Irish decent, are the majority-minority at 38% of the population, followed by Latinos of Mexican descent at 24%, Asians at 20% and African-Americans at 12%. *The same route is now in use by the Metro Expo Light Rail Line.

kay, let's get it straight: “The Westside” is a region of the City of Los Angeles of 25 neighborhoods and independent cities including the beaches, Culver City and Beverly Hills. “West Los Angeles” is the twelve neighborhoods in this guide (we consider Westdale part of Mar Vista, Brentwood Village part of Brentwood, and UCLA part of Westwood Village).

The actual neighborhood called “West Los Angeles (Proper)” lies between Santa Monica and Pico Blvds.; Beverly Glen and Sepulveda Blvds. (We add “Proper” when referring to this neighborhood specifically.) One way to know when you're in West Los Angeles (Proper) is that commercial thoroughfares Olympic Blvd. and Overland Ave. are totally residential. eveloped in 1939 on the old Charnock Ranch by Fritz B. Burns, the tract of 1,200 single-family homes have the exact same floor plan, but reversed every other house, like a zipper. The 900-square-foot homes were sold unpainted, unplanted and without sidewalks for $4,000. Back then, the average HHI was $1,850 and the average home price was $6,500. Today, a (barely) renovated cozy charmer sells for $900,000–$1,200,000.

Fritz B. Burns is one of the most prominent names in 20th Century LA history as the developer of Playa del Rey and Westchester (home of Loyola Marymount University). He was one of LMU's major benefactors, and their annual Distinguished Teacher Award is named after him. The Fritz B. Burns Foundation grants millions of dollars each year to educational institutions, hospitals, human services, medical research and Catholic charities. In recent years, the Foundation has awarded over $2MM a year in loans to LMU students. 

ne of the smallest neighborhoods in LA, Rancho Park was part of Westwood until the 1930s when the City of Los Angeles' project to extend 10th Street reached the newly developed area, bisecting it North and South. Slowed by more than a decade of lawsuits between the City and landowners, 10th Street was renamed “Olympic Boulevard” in honor of the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Summer Games (and perhaps to distance it from controversy).

The Westwood Neighborhood Greenway, now under construction between Overland Ave. and Westwood Blvd., is a great example of community support and multi-group collaboration. An area resident conceived of and garnered support for daylighting a long forgotten stream (Beverly Glen's Brown Canyon Creek) for a greenway, providing benefits for the region, the neighborhood, and the environment. It is great to see that green idea grow into a space that could have been a parking lot. Instead it will be a site for recreation, education and water conservation. I, for one, can't wait to spend time there and on the train.

It had been about eighty years since any major transportation infrastructure development roiled the residents of Rancho Park, but today the community is once again being divided by the Metro Expo Light Rail Line. Like the 1920s, when locals gathered in churches to talk about the construction, today's homeowners gather at RanchoParkOnline. com. neighborhood groups have argued—all the way up to the California Supreme Court—that safety was sacrificed by certain aspects of how the line was conceived. Other neighborhood groups like Light Rail for Cheviot have largely supported the Expo Construction Authority’s plan and process.

Orli: Yes. There are many beautiful Spanish homes, particularly in the areas north of Olympic Blvd. *Aside from their fantastic shows, Pico Playhouse offers acting and dance workshops for all ages. The smart people I work with are building virtual reality-based technologies that help therapists provide treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, holographic projections of historical figures that students can ask questions of, and virtual human role-players for practicing interviews. Long before that, I was a food server at Islands restaurant on Pico. my rancho Park roots run deep, as does my love of their French fries and mud Pie. WLA: How does the West Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce help the business community of Rancho Park RAISE THEIR VOICE? Orli: The West Los angeles Chamber of Commerce is helping the neighborhood in much the same way I try to with rancho Park online. We both are working to strengthen the community and want to educate people about the great resources here in the rancho Park area. 

Heyler Realty: A Historic Institution

eveloped in the 1920s, Rancho Park was a creation of West Los Angeles real estate legend Bill Heyler. Part of the overall marketing theme of the Spanish Colonial Revival-Style, single-family homes, the name Rancho Park harkened back to the romantic Rancho La Ballona days. Despite LA's tendency to build “McMansions,” Rancho Park has held on to a number of single-story, Spanish Moorish gems. Heyler campaigned to transition the Ambassador Hotel's once-private Rancho Country Club into the publicly owned and world famous Rancho Park Golf Course, which reopened to the public under the management of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks in 1948.

ittle Osaka in the Sawtelle neighborhood is West Los Angeles' Japantown. Ironically more suburban and cosmopolitan than DTLA's Little Tokyo, chefs, artists and designers create global-Japanese mashups of food, art and fashion that attract tens of thousands of LA-area visitors a week.

Dr. Masakazu “Jack” Fujimoto and his wife Grace have lived most of their lives in this historic West Los Angeles neighborhood. Dr. Jack was part of a community effort that got the name "Little Osaka" put on the regional planning map of Los Angeles years ago. For his numerous lifelong achievements in Japanese language and cultural education he was awarded Japan's Order of the Rising Sun in 2011. He is the author of Sawtelle: West Los Angeles's Japantown, and reigns as the neighborhood's unofficialofficial historian. Let it be known: If you don't know Dr. Fujimoto, you don't know Jack (about West LA). WLA: Most cities don't have a Japantown, much less two. Which came first: Little Tokyo or Little Osaka? Dr. Jack: Little Tokyo came first, but then the Westside began a development boom in the 1920s. Since so many Japanese were in the gardening business, they moved to Sawtelle (or as they called it, “Soh te ru”), which gave them easy access to the farms in Venice and the big nurseries in the periphery.

WLA: What is the Little Osaka experience? Dr. Jack: I characterize Little Osaka as a ghetto. We couldn't live in Westwood, Bel Air or Brentwood because realtors would not sell to Japanese; insurance companies, banks and other necessary institutions would not do business with us. So the community formed a tanomoshi, like a “Japanese credit union.” Several established nursery owners and gardeners would put in a small amount of money each month then lend it to a member to make an equipment purchase or fund a new business. They would counsel them, and that made a big difference.* WLA: In Japan, Tokyo is sophisticated and Osaka is blue-collar. But in LA, Little Osaka seems to be much more upscale than Little Tokyo. How did that happen? Dr. Jack: There's a certain level of sophistication in bonsai and Japanese landscaping. The Bay Cities Gardeners Association and the Marina Gardeners Association would meet regularly and counsel each other on how to improve service and keep *Formally called a ROSCA—Rotating Savings and Credit Association; informally called a “lending circle.” Every culture has a version of a ROSCA. Kye are responsible for the huge success of first-generation Korean Americans; cundinas in the Mexican community.

WLA: You live here, you wrote the book; you know everybody. How's business? Dr. Jack: Booming! You can go up and down the boulevard every night and see crowds of people. Several of us, including the City Councilmember for the 11th District, mike Bonin, are working to identify the area with city-approved signs near the new light rail stations and along major arteries of West La that read “historic Sawtelle Japantown.” If we can move some businesses to the east side of the freeway, that would be great. and, we need multi-level parking structures to mitigate the parking problems. WLA: Many Sawtelle homeowners are in their 70s and 80s. When they sell their single-family house, it's turned into an apartment building. Where do you see Sawtelle 5-10 years from now?

Four Generations of Japanese Tradition in West LA Developed for homebuyers and tourists attracted to the Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Veteran Soldiers and Sailors, Sawtelle was incorporated as an independent city in 1896 and later merged with Los Angeles in 1922. Since then, the northern part of the neighborhood between Olympic and Santa Monica Boulevards has been a Nihonmachi, a community of Nikkei, Japanese immigrants and their descendants. The early Issei (first generation Japanese settlers) founded nurseries on the deep loam, and soon built the Japanese Institute of Sawtelle and the West Los Angeles United Methodist Church, both in 1925.

Dr. Jack: People will sell, people will build, but what is that building going to look like? If it fits in with the community décor, that would be great. Personally, I want to see more green, more landscaping around buildings, and more open space. I don't want developers to build high-rises sidewalk-to-sidewalk. We want it to be safe, we want it to be friendly, we want people to be able to walk and bike without any problems from congestion.

After the WWII internment, the resettlement years, or Nisei experience, began in 1945 and lasted until 1965. Nisei, the children of the Issei, opened businesses outside of the nursery and gardening industries, and soon Sawtelle's Japantown of restaurants, shops and other services became a destination. Today, Sansei (Generation x) and college-age Yonsei (Millennials) are highly educated, but not as interested in the risks of running a small business as their parents were. Yonsei kids, tweens and teens, are very attracted to their cultural heritage and traditions, especially the fun ones, like Obon.

WLA: How does the West Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce help Sawtelle RAISE ITS VOICE?

Sawtelle's Japanese community gathers each summer for the Obon Festival, a two-day cultural and religious observance to honor ancestral spirits and dance the Bon-Odori to the beat of the taiko drum. Young girls love to be decked out in full kimonos, but most adults wear light summer happi coats or yukata robes. It has the intimate feel of church fair, where everybody knows each other, and everyone's favorite Japanese carnival food can be had for a few bucks.

Dr. Jack: Start with the fact that the diversity of community is crucial. It's only through the diversity of a people that you get change. and that change, if it can be incorporated into a community plan, can make the area greener and more people-friendly. 

WLA: What is it about West LA that supports you as a writer? JDP: West LA is an area full of opportunities, simply because it's so full of people who are doing things. When I first moved to LA in 2006, I knew next to nobody; I had nothing but my Toyota Prius and a laptop. My first job and apartments were in West LA; both proved crucial to helping launch my career as a writer. To support myself, I was working as a private tutor out of a Brentwood-based boutique tutoring center called Franklin Educational Services. Several of the clients I worked for were connected to the entertainment industry. These relationships helped me to make the connections that ultimately lead to getting an agent. Also, one of my first roommates would later become my manager. So for me, the fabric of the city—where I lived, where I worked—was a crucial component of what helped get me rolling.

WLA: As a writer on Star Trek III, you have “melded-minds” with Kirk and Spock. What is the most WLA: What is not on the radio likely place in West LA that you’d that you think people should be find them? listening to?

Alternatively—since we learned in Star Trek into Darkness that by the 23rd century, the Getty will have been appropriated by Starfleet to serve as Starfleet HQ—I think that would be a great place to find them. But in all honesty, if Kirk and Spock were in 21st century West LA, they'd obviously be time traveling. JDP: Sometimes, I'll take my work to the Getty, find a shady spot out on the lawn and just work all afternoon. There's also a smattering of great libraries to work in across WLA. WLA: For sixty years, tens of millions of people have driven past the Temple, but hardly anyone knows that parts of it are open to the public. What is accessible to us “gentiles”? RYP: The temple grounds are open to the public and there are beautiful flowers year-round with little benches to sit on and just think. There's a building behind the main structure called a Visitors' Center that gives people some great information about what it all means. JDP: Formerly called the Los Angeles Family History Library, the Los Angeles FamilySearch Library is open Mon, Fri, Sat from 9AM–5PM; Tue, Wed, Thu from 9AM–9PM. Most services are free, including the use of computers, ancestry websites, films, fiche, books and maps. (There are minor fees for film loans.) It also has one of the most extensive

RYP: In an age of autotune, the power of the human voice in its raw state can be appreciated even more intensely while listening to live broadcasts from The Metropolitan Opera House, and locally from LA Opera. It's humbling to hear all of the beauty and even sometimes the ugliness. It reminds us of the power, and the responsibility we have as artists to uphold a tradition of the vocal Olympics, which is how I describe singing opera well. WLA: What does your confession mean? RYP: I didn't care where we ate; I just wanted to be with him. JDP: We met just after I’d moved to LA, and I had next to no income. On our first date, we were walking along a row of restaurants, and I was somewhat dejectedly looking at all the menus, knowing I couldn’t afford any of it. I turned to her and said: “Rachel, one day, I will sell a screenplay. And when I do, I will come back here and take you to a nice restaurant.” Rachel said she didn’t care where we ate—she’d be happy even just to grab Subway—so we did! A little under a year later, we were married; four years after that, I sold my first screenplay, Goliath, and we went back to the same street and went to the restaurant next door to Subway. I guess you could say that for Rachel and me, it was love at first bite. 

+ Since JD and Rachel were interviewed, they have learned that they are expecting their first child! For Rachel's family, this will be the 6th generation to live in West LA.

One of the most famous landmarks is the 1931 Eastern Star Home for Women, designed by famed architect William Mosier. Once a retirement home for members of the Freemasonry-related Order of the Eastern Star, the buildings and grounds are now the Archer School for Girls.

After WWII, father and son developed Beverlywood and other communities in the greater Los Angeles area. Forever influenced by his first Lakeshore Highlands development with Wickham Havens and the Olmstead Brothers (sons of Fredric Law Olmstead, the designer of New York City's Central Park), Leimert's communities follow the designs of nature. Hills, curves, rises and flats are used as a canvas and are painted with parks of green grass, flowers, and streets with forests of tall, mature, beautiful trees.

or 90 years, many West LA residents worked in showbiz, and everyone knew someone who did. Over the last two decades, more and more film and TV production has moved away from LA. Today, 75% of movies and TV shows are shot out of state. Last year, the city and state passed legislation to lower taxes in an attempt to lure runaway productions back to LA. But even with that and television's second “golden age,” the prevalence of reality shows and loss of viewers to new media have taken a big toll on West LA. Rather than chasing productions all over the country, many parents who work in showbiz have chosen to stay in West LA and develop careers in other industries. Happily married to hubby Clayton Frech and mother of three children under 10, Bahar is one of the West LA parents who is developing another career parallel to her entertainment projects. Rather than starring in a television show (which would require her to sign a seven-year contract and relocate out of state for several months at a time), she has been focusing her energy on real estate, a business she grew up in. Many West LA parents like her have learned that their schools are focusing on STEM education, and only offering “art modules” a few times a year. The result has created worry among some West LA parents who feel that West LA's “culture of culture” is dying. They see how many millennials (people who were born from 1980-2000) have jobs that didn't exist twenty years ago, and most of those jobs have

creativity at their core. These concerns have given rise to the STEAM movement (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). They envision their children as tomorrow's creators and innovators, and believe that in the near future, MFAs will be as valuable as MBAs. Watching the entertainment industry struggle through the last ten years of change, Bahar is one West LA mom who strongly believes that turning STEM into STEAM will empower her children's futures, and fuel their unique passions and interests. We caught up with Bahar, Clayton, the kids and members of her family at their canyon-view home (the house she and her sister grew up in), along with a host of other West LA parents and their children at a little Sunday get-together. WLA: What do you love about living in West LA? Bahar: What I really love about West Los Angeles is the uniqueness of the neighborhoods and the fact that you can be in yoga pants at the Farmers' Market Sunday morning, and then be dressed to the nines, hitting a charity event at Luxe Hotel that evening. We literally have everything within a twenty-minute drive, including the beautiful beaches, hiking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, amazing shopping in Brentwood, and some of the regions best cultural and arts institutions like the Getty, Skirball, UCLA and the Museum of Tolerance. As big as we are—it still feels like a community.

ahar's husband, Clayton (right), is a Regional Vice-President of Safelite AutoGlass, and a recognized business and community leader. Together, Bahar and Clayton are the driving force behind The Angel City Games, a Paralympic qualifying event for all ages and disabilities, to be hosted at UCLA June 19–20, 2015. They are also community organizers for Team Ezra, inspired by their amputee son, 9-year old athlete Ezra Frech. Clayton also serves on the board of Wheelchair and Ambulatory Sports, USA, and on the Los Angeles Advisory Board of the Challenged Athletes Foundation. In his past, Clayton has served as the President of the LA Alumni Chapter of the UCLA Anderson School of Management and has served on the boards of many other non-profits. WLA: As it “takes a village” to raise a child, how has growing up in West LA shaped the personalities of your three boys?

WLA: What is on the minds of West LA parents? Bahar: In my mind, West LA parents are no different than parents anywhere. We all want the best for our children. We want our children to have the best possible options and opportunities in life. The real question is; how do we do this? There are a lot of factors changing in real time—TV and film production has left the region, support for the arts is declining, and at the same time, the smart phone and app world is exploding. We're faced with the reality that by the time our kids graduate college, one out of three jobs that exist today will be obsolete. As renowned economic forecaster Dr. Ed Leamer, from UCLA Anderson, has noted, we need to create problem solvers, not test takers. Our public schools are resource challenged and are grappling with the Common Core. As parents, we are constantly asking ourselves whether we are helping foster the fully-skilled problem solvers and creators of the future. This leaves a big burden on the parents to figure out a path forward.

Most of today's well-paying jobs weren't even imaginable when we were growing up. “Social Media Director,” “Search Engine Optimization Specialist”—these are six-figure jobs that didn't exist five years ago! We saw how software, robots and outsourcing affected our parent's careers and ours, so naturally, we want the schools to focus on STEM curriculum. But if you really think about it, creativity is at the core of innovation. And without art, there is no innovation, just imitation. West LA parents want STEAM! We want art to be given the same importance as science, technology, engineering and math. STEM teaches you how to learn, bring work in on deadline, compete, meet goals and much more. Art takes the natural creativity and wild imagination of children's unstructured play and focuses it into communication. It gives them a language for emotional expression and helps them navigate the exploration of their free curiosity. As I mentioned before, the jobs that many of our kids will have in the future do not exist today. They will have to imagine them into existence.

WLA: Parents ask a lot from the schools. If art is not available, where should they turn? Bahar: Luckily, many of the public schools have STAR programs which are an extraordinary supplement to the art education that is lacking in most public schools. If that is unavailable, there are excellent programs in West LA. The Cheviot Hills Recreation Center has great art classes, music, instrument instruction, and acting, stage makeup, and stagecraft classes. Rolling Robots, also on Pico, is an awesome “makers lab” where kids can build robots and battle them. And there are kids art classes at Art Zone on Pico. Our friends love their Parents' Nite Out class—they just drop the kids off for art class from 6PM–9PM on Friday and get three whole hours to do what they want!

WLA: What are some of your favorite restaurants in West LA? For date night, Clay and I love Fundamental Los Angeles on Westwood Blvd. The menu changes to reflect the best of the season, the wines are extraordinary, and each plate is a work of art—like magazine photos. It's a small neighborhood place—no snobbery or attitude. It's like finding fine art masterpieces in a funky neighborhood gallery. For Persian food, Darya Restaurant on Santa Monica Blvd. has a menu of fine Persian cuisine's “greatest hits.” My favorite thing to recommend is the “Albolo Polo,” the Cherry Rice, with any of the delicious meat dishes. Always go for the “Tadig” crispy rice with all three stews on top. It's unbelievable! On Cotner, above The Wine House (L.A.’s largest wine shop), there is a great little restaurant called Upstairs II where they pair a chef ’s tasting menu with some of their most interesting wines. WLA: Only in West Los Angeles can a homeowner list their property with a legit movie star! How did you get into real estate— who was your mentor? Bahar: I grew up in the real estate industry, and love the intimacy of getting to know people, their history, and feeling the essence of who they are when spending time in their homes. It's very special to me. When acting, I spend a lot of time getting into the psyche of my characters; who they are, what they love, and what their physical environment looks like. When I develop my characters, envisioning their home is a big part of the process.

Sometimes, when agents have a “pocket listing” (a home that is not listed on the MLS) they reach out to other agents in their network for qualified buyers. What better place to network and develop leads than at the West LA Chamber of Commerce’s mixers and events? Also, there are a lot of members who work in finance, insurance, construction, and other trades that are important to supporting a sales close. Every realtor in West LA should become a member and attend West LA Chamber of Commerce events! 
