SLACKLINING Slacklining is the act of balancing along a narrow, flexible piece of webbing which is low to the ground and usually anchored between two trees. Originating in the climbing world, slacklining has evolved into a cross trainer, backyard activity and sport all of its own. Slacklining can be traced back to climbing camps in Yosemite during the mid-seventies. Climbers would stay there for weeks blazing new routes and

Gibbon has fueled the next generation of slacklining by making it easy and accessible to everyone. The 2-inch webbing and ratchet tensioning design make the Gibbon line friendlier to walk on and easier to set up. No additional tools or rigging are needed; just the kit and a couple of trees and you’re ready to go. However, Gibbon has not forgotten their roots and designs slackline specific 1-inch webbing that can be rigged traditionally or with the ease of Gibbon hardware. SPORT The company has also introduced slacklines that are made of trampoline material. This new, more dynamic type of line has led to a branch of the sport known as tricklining. Competitive tricklining officially began in 2009 and has since become a global sport. The World Slackline Federation (WSFed) is the governing body of professional slackline competitions which dictates the rules and regulations and maintains records of the athlete’s rankings. Gibbon USA sponsors pro athletes who compete worldwide, and hosts the most competitions in the world. The sport has experienced rapid growth and has garnered the attention of well-known media. Gibbon USA athletes have been featured on the SuperBowl XLVI Halftime Show, Conan O’Brien, NFL Films, NBC Sports and Madonna’s MDNA World Tour just to name a few. COMPANY Gibbon Slacklines launched in 2007 in Stuttgart, Germany and quickly became an international brand. Based in Louisville, CO, Gibbon USA became the exclusive North American distributor in 2009 and continues to fuel the growth of the company throughout the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

In June 2013, the company announced the relocation of its North American headquarters from Boulder, CO to a larger building in Louisville, CO. This relocation to an ample 42,000 square foot space along with the renovating and building of an additional 3,345 square feet of new space, will allow for the continued expansion of the brand. The new Gibbon Slacklines building is conveniently located just two miles from their recently constructed slackline park in Superior, CO.

“We have seen tremendous growth of Gibbon Slacklines over the past few years,” said Emilio Torres VP of Sales and Marketing for North America. “This new space will allow us to keep expanding the brand, increasing the number of employees and making an even larger footprint with our ongoing events and competitions.” The company also has plans in place to build a state-of-the-art slackline training facility in the new space. Pro athletes will be able to train and teach clinics to continue fueling the sport.
LONGLINE EQUIPMENT
The building was purchased for a total of $2.8 million and the move was made possible by a Small Business Administration, SBA 7(a) loan and the support of a Business Assistance Program offered by the City of Louisville. This substantial reinvestment into the brand speaks volumes about the continued success projected by Gibbon USA owners.

COMPETITIONS
Gibbon’s elite team of athletes travel the nation setting up slackline activations at events. Offering interactive or “try it” zones along with pros demonstrating the potential of the sport has proved to be a successful means of introducing the masses to the world of slacklining and cultivating new communities.
The branch of slacklining known as tricklining has grown from an urban style into an extreme sport. Gibbon sponsors professional athletes who compete world-wide and also hosts several competitions every year in conjunction with the World Slackline Federation. These competitions continue to fuel the growth of the sport and have been included in extreme sport and outdoor sport venues such as the Dew Tour and the GoPro Mountain Games.

FACILITIES
Gibbon USA has introduced a Slackline Scholarship Challenge program which goes into schools teaching balance and movement workshops during PE classes. Educating students about the benefits and enjoyment of slacklining has developed a whole new generation of slackliners who are getting fit and growing the community.

Gibbon USA strives to make slacklining available to everyone and supports facilities who want to offer the sport. The company has been designing and building slackline parks all over the nation for cities, camps, resorts, schools and gyms. Plans to build and develop the first pro slackline training facility are under way in Louisville, CO. Providing multiple venues for slackline use and pushing the boundaries of existing slackline areas further contributes to the growth of the sport.

The Gibbon YouTube Channel engages the community by offering advice and instructional videos for those new to slacklining. Video streams of competitions are also available to keep up with the pros and the sport. Athletes host advice videos and recaps about their travels so anything the community wants to see is readily accessible. Video contests are held worldwide via video submission so anyone can get involved.

COMPETITIONS IN THE SLACKLINING ARENA TODAY The top athletes in the World Ranking have been competing all year to earn a place in the elite 2013 World Cup, a four part series. Two of the four competitions have already taken place, but points are cumulative across the four events to decide a winner. The World Cup Finals will take place October 16th inside the newly open Mandalay Bay night club, LIGHT- turned on by Cirque du Soleil. The new Cirque show, Michael Jackson One, features a slackline component and Gibbon athlete, Igor Zambelli, so it’s a natural fit to host the grand finale of the slackline competition season. The 16 pros who have made it to this last showdown will compete intensely for points and the overall 2013 World Cup winner will be determined. It is Vegas and still anybody’s game so, place your bets!

Gibbon USA has partnered with MGM Resorts, Mandalay Bay, Cirque du Soleil, The House of Blues Foundation Room, and LIGHT-turned on by Cirque du Soleil to host the Slackline World Cup Finals and Megastunt in Las Vegas . It will be an event of epic proportions in true Vegas style. An elaborate highline Megastunt over the strip will kick-off the finals October 15th. Elite Gibbon athletes will slackline 500 feet in the air over Mandalay Bay. A VIP party will be hosted in the House of Blues Foundation Room and provide a bird’s eye view of the spectacle for those attending.

Gibbon pros have been featured by the New York Times, Conan O’Brien, Carson Daly, NBC Sports, Spike TV, and ESPN to name a few. Most notably, Madonna included a Gibbon pro in her SuperBowl XLVI Halftime Show performance watched by 114 million viewers and subsequently she hired three Gibbon pros to join her on her MDNA World Tour. The SuperBowl attention led to a follow-up documentary by NFL Films which aired on ESPN and was nominated for two Sports Emmys. Regional and national media continue to follow slacklining and increase awareness about the sport and the brand.

EMILIO TORRES VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND MARKETING
Emilio Torres is the VP of Sales and Marketing at Gibbon Slacklines, which means he does a lot around here – a whole lot. Between managing Gibbon’s largest retailers, organizing competitions all over the country, and introducing slacklining to 114 million people in 30 seconds by working closely with Cirque du Soleil and Madonna to get a slackline performance in the Superbowl Halftime Show, he’s got a lot on his plate. If you ask him, he says his responsibilities at Gibbon are “soup to nuts” (go ahead and look it up, I had to). Emilio came to Gibbon from Crocs, a company he helped build into a global, publicly-traded shoe empire. “I was disappointed to see Emilio leave Crocs,” says John McCarvel, Crocs CEO, “but you can’t keep a passionate person down that wants to work in startups.” Emilio says his main objective at Gibbon and with slacklining in general is to never hear someone say “isn’t that just something hippies do?” and instead transform it into a full-fledged mainstream sport – to one day have slackline competitions at the XGames, or even the Olympics. Emilio spends what little free time he has playing foosball and hanging out with his kids Joey (13) and Justine (16).

Jaime Pletcher is what you might call a “jack of all trades”. Her title is Marketing and Events Manager, but her responsibilities for Gibbon extend much farther than that. Jaime manages the US Pro Team, coordinates trade and consumer events as well as sponsorship and activation for pro competitions, coordinates press, contributes to package design, develops content for press releases, website, and catalogs and designs slackline parks… heck, she even sits down and writes the little legal print in all the instruction manuals that nobody ever reads. If you come out to one of our competitions, look around – the bleachers, music, sponsors, athletes, event t-shirts, over-sized checks - it all comes together because Jaime works extremely hard behind the scenes. “ Gibbon USA has taken an interactive approach to marketing with a focus on live events introducing the sport to the masses, my role is to ensure the brand is well represented and those events are well received,” says Pletcher.

In her free time, she enjoys hiking, running, skiing and backpacking. She was recently married to her husband, Brad, and they have a fourteener-climbing Shih Tzu, Wilson, who accompanies her to the office daily.

She grew up in Western Maryland and graduated with a double major in Psychology and Kinesiology from Frostburg State University (GO BOBCATS!). After college, Jaime worked for an interior design firm in Annapolis, MD doing marketing, sales and design. She also worked as a personal trainer and fitness coach, an interest that led her to move to Colorado and take a job with Gibbon Slacklines in late 2009. At that time, Gibbon USA was just beginning and Jaime was one of the first few full-time employees, making her an official “Slackline O.G.”. Her hope is to build slacklining into a mainstream activity as commonly seen as a skateboard or bike. She plans to continue her efforts growing the sport and fully expects to see it in the X Games in the not too distant future.

Brad Schneider started slacklining in 2008 when his roommate in college at Winona State University in Winona, MN set one up on campus. He was instantly hooked, and unknowingly started the path that would lead to his eventual career. After he graduated, Gibbon hired Brad to tour around the Midwest, doing demos at local retailers and events. Eventually, he was asked to join the team in an Inside Sales role, and he relocated to Colorado in February of 2012. As part of his sales responsibilities, Brad manages over 225 accounts across North America. He also takes care of all of the customer service inquiries, so he’s seen just about every way that you can incorrectly set up a slackline. As the office’s resident grammar nazi, Gibbon employees clutter his desk on a daily basis with flyers, website text, and packaging to be spell-checked before they go to print. He also plays an important role in the competitions, as well. Having retired from competitive slacklining (see: getting old), Brad is the music DJ at the competitions and is a WSFed certified judge. He even personally designed the coveted Slackline World Championships title belts in 2012 and 2013. This guy does a little bit of everything – including using valuable time writing staff bios for the brochure! He’s (I’m) the best!!

Paul Botelho was raised in a suburb of Boston, MA, which gives him the award for “best accent in the office”. Paul puts his accent to good use in his Inside Sales role where he manages many of Gibbon’s key accounts and is constantly prospecting for new accounts to open. He was working in estate liquidation in Boston when he saw the opportunity to move out west and help Gibbon grow into a huge lifestyle brand. After missing out on the .com tech bubble of the late 90’s, there was no way he wasn’t getting on the slackline wave. He’s been recently married to his lovely wife Ana and he has got two (huge) dogs, Rex and Honey Bear. On the weekends, you can find him at Denver auction houses and estate sales looking for antiques, oddities and collectibles. So the next time you call the Gibbon office and you hear, “Guud Aftuhnoon Gibbon this is Paul – how may I direct yuh cauwl??” You’ll know a little bit more about the Bostonian on the other end.

FRANKIE NAJERA MULTI-MEDIA COORDINATOR
Frankie Najera has proven that it truly is possible to live the “slacklife”. From his humble beginnings in San Diego, CA organizing a slackline meetup group to becoming a top-ranked athlete in the sport as well as the Multi-Media Coordinator for Gibbon Slacklines – you may be asking yourself, “How can I be like Frankie?” His answer? “Just start slacklining.” It sounds simple, but that’s what he needed to do to get hired as a member of the Gibbon Demo Team and start travelling around the country spreading the good word of slackline. In 2011, he moved to Boulder with his wife Megan (who he met through, guess what, slacklining) to start working in the Gibbon office full-time. When asked about his day-to-day responsibilities, he starts with checking Gibbon’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter feeds (again, how do I get this guys’ life?), but he also creates most all of the media you see from Gibbon every day. Between designing t-shirts, brochures, Slackline Magazine, banners, making videos, sharing photos, updating the website… the list goes on and on. He does all this while maintaining a top-10 WSFed trickline ranking and competing worldwide. He makes time in his busy schedule to raise his 7-month-old baby Alia, who is the worlds’ only known purebred slackliner, running ridiculously far distances, and perfecting the art of kendama.

Josh Beaudoin has been teaching and presenting the sport of slacklining for 5 years. On his own, with no pay, Josh would go to schools and events to get children involved and interested in the sport. Gibbon took notice and hired him on to run the Slackline Scholarship Challenge. Since then, Josh has personally instructed over 30,000 students how to slackline and improve their balance with SSC workshops at middle schools, high schools and colleges across the United States. As a result, Josh recently was asked to present at the Think

Big Conference in Dallas, TX, where 1,500+ CEO’s received his guidance in applying the judgment and mindset required with slacklining to their businesses and everyday lives.

When he isn’t helping people from all walks of life push their limits on slacklines close to the ground, he is pushing his own on lines much higher up – a discipline called highlining. Josh was profiled as a highliner in an extremely popular YouTube video called “High Line Slack Line with Good Line”.
