Of life’s simple pleasures, eating good food washed down with a refreshing (and perhaps alcoholic) drink must rank amongst the most enjoyable. Add to that the opportunity to experience food created by the different people, and groups that make up our diverse community and with it the chance to rub shoulders with friends old and new, and what results is the recipe for the annual tradition that Calentita has become. In a year when we face what could well be the hottest summer on record, and environmental concerns and protests make headlines across the world once again, we continue to add to the environmental credentials of the event. In 2018 we went “plastic free”, eliminating single use plastic from the festival. This year we have introduced a new feature “Food for Thought” - thoughtful presentations that consider the environmental and ethical impacts of the foods we all enjoy and some inspiring alternatives to “business as usual”. We are pleased to welcome Phil Brooke, Research and Education Manager at Compassion in World Farming UK, and Vidya Heisel CEO of visionary permaculture farm project DanyaDara, as well as some other interesting and informative talks. In 2019, we also welcome hundreds of athletes, coaches, team leaders, and supporters from the 22 islands that make up the sporting family of the Natwest International Island Games. Although street food might not be near the top of the list of things-to-do for those that have trained for years for a sporting moment, we hope that everyone will at least enjoy a little slice of our Gibraltarian community and famous hospitality. Calentita started in 2007 and since then it has grown to become an integral and much loved part of the Gibraltarian cultural calendar. From the hundreds of people that give tirelessly of their time, slaving over hot stoves and baking ovens preparing tasty dishes, to the thousands of people that come to the event to taste and enjoy what others have made - all of us contribute to making Calentita what it is. I hope you have a very enjoyable Calentita! OWEN SMITH WORD OF MOUTH ORGANISERS OF CALENTITA

The ever popular “Calentita”, Gibraltar’s Gastronomical Festival, is once again here with us. The food festival, more like a street party, has become one of Gibraltar’s main cultural events in our social calendar having grown from strength to strength and tripled in size since its inception 13 years ago. This year’s event is not only a culmination of our annual Spring Festival, but also marks the start to the cultural programme of events planned for the Gibraltar 2019 Natwest Island Games. With food being a major part of Gibraltar’s culture, the Calentita festival serves to showcase Gibraltar to the international community, the diverse multi-cultural and religious society we live in, displaying a wide variety of dishes the community is influenced by. I would like to take the opportunity of extending a warm Gibraltarian welcome to all those visiting us from abroad, especially the athletes and their families competing at the Gibraltar 2019 Natwest Island Games. A special thank you goes out to Word of Mouth for the superb organisation of the event under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, the stall holders, volunteers, the essential services, the staff at Gibraltar Cultural Services and above all the general public for their continuous support. May “Calentita”, Gibraltar’s Gastronomical Festival, continue to flourish so that our young ones, our future, can be educated in our unique way of life. I hope you all enjoy the festivities. Bon Appétit! THE HON STEVEN LINARES MP MINISTER FOR CULTURE

Some of the stalls taking part in Calentita 499 GIBRALTARIAN FOOD BY THE GIBRALTAR CHESHIRE HOMES SUPPORT GROUP EAT LIKE A LOCAL FOR A GOOD CAUSE BY DAVID REVAGLIATTE

Gibraltarian Nicole Jones and fellow Gibraltar Cheshire Homes Support group of volunteers return to the festival this year to serve up golden slices of Calentita from their stand. Love it or hate it, Calentita is Gibraltar’s national dish that’s made with chickpea flour, water, olive oil, salt and pepper and a big helping of nostalgia. Customers can also buy typical local desserts too! Nicole & Co are hoping to raise awareness and funds for the Gibraltar Cheshire Home - a residential home for disabled children and adults in Tangiers that has been running for over 30 years. Nicole has taken part in Calentita since the start, “We participate annually because its gives us a chance to fundraise, to create the awareness that we aim to create with each of our events. We get people who don’t know about our work asking us about it and that for us is a bonus. The more we can get our voices heard the better!”. On what visitors to their stand can expect, Nicole says “We always sell the local dish ‘Calentita’ because we feel the locals deserve to get a taste of it. This year we have skipped our usual meatballs and callos and have opted to go for Gibraltarian desserts. We know how important nice cakes and desserts are for locals and we always feel there are not enough stalls offering this”. So if you want to eat like a local at this year’s event, make sure this stand is on your shortlist!

MOROCCAN FOOD BY THE MOROCCAN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Returning year on year to Calentita, the Moroccan Community Association’s food stand is an annual treat for Gibraltar. The scent of charcoal-grilled pinchitos is one of the lingering features of Calentita, and the queues stretch beyond the boundaries of Casemates as perennial festival-goers line up for these spicy treats. Of course, the Moroccan Community Association’s food stall serves many more traditional Moroccan flavours: harira soup, couscous, mouth-watering cakes and sweets, and refreshing mint tea to cleanse the palate and prepare you for a second helping. Morocco has one of the world’s greatest cuisines. Spicy and aromatic, the food reflects the vibrancy of a country of magnificent landscapes, bustling cities and strong traditions. Moroccan cooking is rich in subtle and intriguing flavours, combinations that are at once surprising and delightful: tart green olives and chopped preserved lemon rind mixed into a chicken tagine, or sardines coated with a coriander, parsley, cumin and a hint of chilli and grilled over coals - distinct and irresistible flavours that have influenced Andalucía’s cuisine for centuries. Calentita is as much of a gathering of Gibraltar’s community in a celebration of diversity as it is a celebration of food. The Moroccan Community Association’s food stall is a testament to the Moroccan community’s intrinsic bonds with Gibraltar – the sharing of food as vital to community life. The curling smoke from the almost legendary, grilling pinchitos drifting over Casemates will carry the memory of childhood for many Gibraltarians and the promise of mouthwatering treats to come.

FLOSS-POP SERVING UP CANDY FLOSS REALNESS BY DAVID REVAGLIATTE

Floss-Pop will be once again serving up sugary cloudiness at this year’s Calentita festival. Local foodie and self-confessed carnival fanatic Jordan Lopez has taken part in Calentita for the last three years and is hoping that the humble candy floss will continue to be a hit at this year’s event, “I feel candy floss is something which we all liked as children and it brings back childhood memories. Some people might say it’s full of sugar and they are CORRECTO - but whether you are 9 or 90 we all need some sweetness in our lives!” When I ask Jordan about why he decided to set up his candy stall again this year, he smiles, “I think Calentita is a fantastic opportunity to get the community out and doing what we love doing the most - apart from having a good old moan and that’s EAT!” This year’s Calentita is aiming to be bigger and better and Jordan has been a fan from the start, “I’ve visited every single Calentita event since it started…my sister and I would make sure we were down at Casemates early to make sure we were first in line. We love having the stand at this great event because every year it changes and there is something new. We love having people wanting to try our goodies and above all it’s always nice to see people smile.” So if you’ve got a sweet tooth or simply want to be transported back to your childhood this year, head down and see the team at the Floss Pop stand!

GREEK DELIGHTS

K

Bianca Tsagkatakis is a regular at the Calentita Festival and has a flair for preparing a range of the most tempting Greek treats. This year, she returns for the sixth time, and “I absolutely love it!” she declares with boundless enthusiasm. For Bianca, the Calentita Festival is the highlight of her food calendar: “The food, the ambience and the crowds make it an excellent evening where people are always super-enthusiastic to try out new things.” Bianca specialises in Greek cuisine. “For the Calentita Festival, we generally make a couple of Greek favourites like Baklava and spinach & feta pies. This year, we’re also trying out Loukoumades, which are fried dough balls (the equivalent of Gibraltar’s familiar churros),” Bianca explains. With pies and all sorts of pastries being among Bianca’s food favourites, these were bound to be added to the Calentita menu: “We are preparing Baklava and galaktoboureko, both filo pastry desserts - one with nuts and cinnamon, the other with rich semolina custard. For savoury dishes, we are preparing Spanakopita, which are spinach and feta pies as well as Dolmades - vegetables and rice wrapped in vine leaves. There will also be a selection of preserves and chocolates which I make at home as well.” “My husband is from Crete” she adds, “and we both have a passion for cooking and especially for Greek and middle Eastern food. This year we have my mother in law over from Crete and she is giving us a hand with the cooking and baking- can’t get more original than that!”
