For I am not ashamed for the gospel of Christ
“And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.” Daniel 12:3.
“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”
Revelation 22:12
IN THIS ISSUE
Editorial Consider this quotation; “Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life that he must carry out... A concrete assignment that demands fulfilment. Therein he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated, thus everyone’s task is unique as his specific opportunity.”- Viktor Frankel Now imagine what you and I could achieve if we lived our lives with such purposefulness. The miracle that is life is way too precious to be wasted; and God forbid that in the pursuit of self-gratification we should disregard our God-given Mission to share the good news. To each one a talent has been given, which when used in the Master’s vineyard, will lead souls to Christ. In this issue of The Contagious Aventist we feature the works of various mission groups, trusting that their stories will ignite in you a desire to get involved. Be it by feeding the hungry, loving the unloved, offering encouragement, lifting the fallen or simply spreading the word. ‘Oh thou whom the Lord is sending, gather now the sheaves of Gold.’ -Sithembile Moyo

Asha Uwamahoro When Jesus Christ was here on earth, He told His disciples to go and preach the gospel and the kingdom of God. As Christ’s follower, I have a mission to tell the good news of Jesus Christ our Saviour and of His soon return. Mission therefore is doing what God commands.
Mission is not only what we as Seventh-day Adventists are called to but it is also Gakire Alex our Identity. It gives us the privilege of being co-workers With reference to the gospel together with God while at the same time it enables us to commission as given in Matdevelop a Christ-like character thew 28:19 Mission means that we need to make a through self-sacrificing service. Evangelism to me is one move from whatever keeps us busy and make time to of the greatest joys I’ve ever spread The Gospel to others, experienced. The joy of seeing lives changed and souls won to sharing the love of Christ and testifying of his grace. Jesus is an experience that not even words can express.

she says Nicholas Kiprotich Too Many Christians are waiting for Jesus to come. They do not know that Jesus is the one who is waiting for Christians to first fulfil Matt 24:14 “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. It is every Christian’s mandate to hasten the coming of the day of God (2 Peter 3:12) Mission is simply delivering to the world what God has given you and empowered you to do with the talents He has given you.
Kgabo Ramela Ronald Kumbatira Mission is preaching the gospel and the making of disciples as commissioned by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in Mathew 28:1920. This is not only done by theologians but anyone who has accepted the call to follow Jesus.

Mission means that I see opportunities to share my life with those around me as the main corridor to evangelism ~ friends, family, colleagues, neighbours and total strangers I come in contact with everyday; prayerfully and intentionally sharing smiles, kindness, love, tears, my faith in God and my loving Jesus and His simple life of service.

I
have been intrigued by the changes in technology.
Back in the 80’s, any suggestion of such technological advancement as I see around me would have had me laughing one to scorn. While conducting an evangelistic series in Zvishavane, Zimbabwe in 1992, I heard about a phone service where the callers would be able to see each other as they talk. I laughed like Sarah in disbelief. I have lived long enough to see the introduction of “face-time”, Skype, Tango, just to mention a few of the apps out there. Remarkable innovations! I remember when internet was dial-up. I recall the noise it made as it connected to the internet. It was a wow moment for me. That noisy sound was the sign of advanced technology…awesome I thought! Fast forward to today, we are now living in the age of FIOS the guru of high speed internet. DSL is almost a forgotten dream in some places. Dial-up is extinct...at least where I live! We have advanced greatly! Now we are talking Wi-Fi! The icing on the cake is the Wi-Fi Hot Spot! Do I love this idea! It is so convenient! I could go on about how life has become so pleasantly different since the 80s and 90s. Would to God I had been privileged to have this technology when I was in college…it would have cut my misery considerably. Be that as it may, the lack of it made a man out of me. The cool thing about the hot-spot is that I don’t have to see where the real system is which is affording me this luxury. I don’t have to know how it is configured or set up or even its physical location in the building that houses it. The sign is enough for my heart to throb with joy knowing I can connect to the World Wide Web. My task is to figure out how to log-on and access the internet, social media, read the news, download stuff, send email and the list is endless.

It dawned on me as I was walking from the Critical Care Unit that I am a hot spot for heaven! Wow! Me? Yes, me! Amazing! The mind-blowing truth is that God has chosen you to be that Hot Spot where people come to you and you are the conduit to heaven. From me, the Hot Spot, they can access heaven.
1 Cor. 15:18 says, “And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation… 20 now then we are ambassadors (HOT SPOTS) for Christ. (emphasis added) This ever improving technology makes it possible for me to use my cell phone as a Hot Spot! Neat idea! The requirement is that I set it up with my provider and meet my financial obligations after which more than one person can access the net from my phone. Just a few years ago that was unheard of! But you know what’s cool is that God already had this system going form eternity past! We have been using Wi-Fi to communicate with God. Not DSL or FIOS speeds but at the speed of thought! Now that’s fast! It’s faster than the speed of light. How about being a Hot Spot for Christ in your daily life? The world is full of people needing to access a Power greater than them. They are sensing a void that only God can fill. Like the Ethiopian Eunuch (Acts 8:26-39), they may need someone to help them connect with/to Christ. Phillip was that Hot Spot. You too can be. I see the need for this everyday as I walk the hallways of this hospital and I am challenged each day to be a Hot Spot because someone desperately needs that connection. At a time when the chips are down, and it looks like the world around them is collapsing, they need a Hot Spot. That’s me! What that means then is that I must be connected in order for someone else to be connected to Who I am connected to! I dare not leave that to chance and hope that by some happenstance once connected is always connected! No! It’s a daily process. Paul said, “I die daily” (1 Cor 15:31). Within the context of our subject, we could substitute the word die with connect so it reads, I connect daily! I need a constant connection. A Hot Spot disconnected to the provider is of no use. God needs a Hot Spot today, will you be one? It’s not about how much education one has or worldly status or possessions. It’s about being a willing heart given over to the workings of the Holy Spirit. It’s that simple…you too can be a Hot Spot! The pen of inspiration states, “His biddings are his enablings!” God bless you!

I Live in an African Village After the seminar I had the opportunity to stay with one of the workers at his home in a small village called Bundinamandi. This area is home mostly to the Bwamba people (one of many tribes in Uganda). Over the next two months we visited with church members and other community members in Bundinamandi and other surrounding villages in their homes. We also conducted Sabbath church services at a number of the Seventh-day Adventist churches in the area. The people were very grateful for the time we spent praying with them and encouraging them from the Bible. I was reminded often of how the Apostles of Christ journeyed from place to place sharing the gospel.
I recently returned to South Africa for the months of July and August to sort out some personal business and to get some rest whilst also visiting with family and friends. I have been back in Uganda since late August and have been staying at the Ntandi campus. By God’s grace, I plan to go back to Bundinamandi to continue serving the Bwamba people.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. - Matthew 11:29

Those professed Christians who are constantly complaining, and who seem to think cheerfulness and happiness a sin, have not genuine religion. Those who take a mournful pleasure in all that is melancholy in the natural world, who choose to look upon dead leaves rather than to gather the beautiful living flowers, who see no beauty in grand mountain heights and in valleys clothed with living green, who close their senses to the joyful voice which speaks to them in nature, and which is sweet and musical to the listening ear--these are not in Christ. They are gathering to themselves gloom and darkness, when they might have brightness, even the Sun of Righteousness arising in their hearts with healing in His beams. Ministry of Healing page 251

Community Projects Organisation There
is a great need within our communities and around the world, for people to feel loved, to know Jesus and to have hope in His soon return. Jesus set the ultimate example of what our ministry here on earth should be when He walked on the earth. He promised that He would always be with us. I grew up in a small town. We didn’t have much but I learned the valuable lesson of appreciating the little that one has. I have always believed that God had a plan for my life, no matter how tough and difficult my life seemed to be. I remember one night around midnight, a week after returning from a short visit to my home town, I was watching a Christian program that really inspired me. I believe that was the day the Lord showed me the purpose He had for my life. I remember crying so much that night, because the calling He gave me seemed so enormous and so unreachable. My heart was breaking for my little home town, after seeing how my peers had succumbed to the snares of Satan, how families had been torn apart, how people were consumed by the need of alcohol and the lack of love and kindness. God told me I could make a positive difference, I did not know how or when I would be able to make that difference, it all seemed so impossible. That week, I sat writing down ideas as to what I could do to make a positive impact in my hometown. I soon learned that my time is not God’s time that this was His work and I needed to be groomed and guided by Him.
Theresa Ely
Days and months went by and I felt discouraged, because nothing was happening, but the calling was still in my heart. I felt the Holy Spirit’s guidance in my life all the time.
CPO Two years later, I shared God’s vision with some of my friends and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit the “Community Project Organisation” (CPO) was registered as a Non-profit Organisation. We visited the community leaders in my hometown and shared with them God’s vision for the town and the vision was warmly received. With my hometown being so far away and not having all the resources we needed, I knew that in God’s time everything would work out. While we waited on the Lord’s guidance for the project, we realised that we needed to do something within our immediate community. That is how the Soup Drive project in Cape Town was begun. With our first soup drive we had 12 volunteers coming out to help. What a blessed first night we had. We had six pots of warm soup and 20 loaves of bread. We made our way down Voortrekker Road from Bellville all the way down to Elsies River, giving soup and bread to the homeless in the cold Cape Town winter nights.

The Lord really blessed our soup drive ministry, not only did we share a warm cup of soup or plate of food, but we have had the opportunity to sing and pray with our homeless friends and share God’s Word with them, giving them hope and encouragement. Proverbs 22:2 says, “The rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all.” It is heartbreaking to see the conditions in which people on the street live. We invited many young people to join us on our soup drives; this experience developed, among the young people, a sense of appreciation for what they have a passion to be of service to others, just as Jesus showed us when He walked on the earth. Many have expressed that their eyes have been opened by what they have seen on the streets, that people indeed need the Lord and that the Lord has invited us to partner with Him to tell others about Jesus’ love and His soon return.
poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,14and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” The highlight of spending so many nights with our friends on our soup drives was sharing a Christmas meal with them. On 25 December 2013 many volunteers came to assist us in preparing a Christmas lunch for the homeless. This was such an amazing ending to our Soup drive for 2013. We received so many donations in cash, food, and clothing. We also donated food parcels to the victims whose homes burned down near the Bishop Lavis area. All the volunteers that came were richly blessed to have been part of such a wonderful ministry.
Christmas Day 2013 Luke 14:12-14 12Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the

Conclusion The soup drive indeed was a huge success during 2013. For 2014 we have bigger plans for our friends on the street. As for the project in my hometown, I can clearly see God opening doors for us to be able to go into my hometown and preach and teach God’s Word and meet the needs of the people out there. Matthew 25:37-40 37”Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’40”The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. The Mission for CPO is to do God’s will, showing compassion to a dying world, bringing hope to the hopeless, loving the unloved, bringing families together and encouraging young and old to make a difference in their generation. Matthew 9:37-38 - When Jesus saw the people, He had compassion over them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. As He said to His disciples then He is saying the same to us right now, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.” If you would like to get involved please feel free to contact us: communityprojectorg@gmail.com

The Union Buildings Project Gabriel Moyo
“Thus saith the Lord my God; Feed the flock of the slaughter”, Zechariah 11:4. When God spoke about feeding his sheep, it was in both a spiritual and physical context, which is exactly what the Union Building Project is mandated to do.
Background “Thus saith the Lord my God; Feed the flock of the slaughter”, Zechariah 11:4. When God spoke about feeding his sheep, it was in both a spiritual and physical context, which is exactly what the Union Building Project is mandated to do. The feeding program, aptly named The Union Buildings Project, gets its name from the fact that the meals provided are served on the lawns of the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The founding members of the Project; Sisters Zola Ranncwana, Zodwa Magandlela, Florence Masabu, Mary Opoa, Thembi Ndlovu, Prescilla Ndlovu and Brother Jeff Lebakeng, identified a need, which was Holy Spirit in-
spired, to feed God’s children. This pioneering group took it upon themselves to feed the homeless at the Union Buildings. The project began in 2008 as a self-funded project, driven by the desire to “make a difference both spiritually and physically”. In 2010 the Sunnyside church, noting the huge impact made by these workers for Christ, decided to incorporate this project into the Dorcas Ministries’ programs, thereby offering much needed funding.
Current State What initially began as a small project providing food for 70-70 people now feeds approximately 150 people each weekend. The team meets at church every Sunday morning

to cook meals that offer nourishment and sustenance. The menu, founded on the SDA church’s health message, typically includes pap, lentils or beans, cabbage, butternut, beetroot and soya meat chunks. With the cooking concluded, the afternoon is then dedicated to serving the masses followed by a bible study with those that are willing to open up their hearts to Christ. There are challenges with the project, the most notable being that not everyone in the church has embraced the concept. Living in a world of quick fixes, it’s no surprise that some expect instant results in the form of increased baptisms emanating from the project. While the aim is definitely to lead souls to the paths of living water, another very real challenge is that the people being assisted do not have the conditions needed to focus completely on Christ. Most of them have other preoccupations such as living on the streets and experiencing the daily struggles of not having enough to eat during the week and not having a safe place to sleep. For those who do choose baptism, attempts for integration are made but sadly with some returning to their former lives as they sometimes do not feel the “acceptance” of the wider church community. This has necessitated a review of the strategy employed going forward in dealing with these souls.
Looking Ahead Going forward, integration into society will require the identification of individuals’ needs such as accommodation, food and someone readily available to help with their spiritual upliftment. Contributions in the form of clothing, food or otherwise are always welcome and encouraged but beyond the basics are self-actualization needs which include seeing these individuals working and building their lives. The ultimate goal to ensure that their renewed lives within Christ grow continually.
TESTIMONY
One person who has benefited from the Union Buildings Project is Fortune Sipho Ncube and this is his testimony: “My name is Fortune Sipho Ncube. I heard about the Union Building Project about three months ago and with my hardships and medical condition coupled with the ills and odds of being on the streets, I had doubts about the love of God. I decided to satisfy my curiosity by attending my first session of the Union Buildings and to my delight I discovered the love of God in my life as never seen before. I met young men and women poised and dedicated to extending the love of God to the less privileged like us. They serve us with well nourishing food, teach us truth from the word of God and provide us with clothes and shoes. A few weeks ago I was admitted in hospital and the only people who visited me were the Union Buildings project team. I want to say that, I am very thankful to God for giving me a family away from home with the Union Buildings Project team. I think the Union Buildings Project ought to continue because it is touching the lives of many and suggest that this project should look at providing shelter as part of its programmes.”

RECLAIM YOUR LIFE RECOVERY CENTRE This Organisation facilitates the recovery of those who desire restoration from substance dependence and unproductive behaviour. The centre, a Non-profit Organisation, is based in the Free State province in Thaba Nchu. Although the RECLAIM YOUR LIFE RECOVERY CENTRE is a young company that officially began in early 2013, it has a big Vision and an important Mission. VISION To be the lighthouse of hope to those kept and held by unproductive habits and behaviour from living life abundantly and reaching their fullest potential. MISSION To put the future of our society and the character and destiny of our nation in the hands of a sound and healthy generation through: • helping in the recovery of substance dependence and unproductive behaviour; • helping in the forming of new mental habits; • training minds to be disciplined, educated and prepared for service and usefulness in the world; • Instilling a desire for continuous self improvement to reach the highest possible standard of physical, mental, and moral excellence. PHILOSOPHY 1. Holistic health 2. Self control 3. Morality 4. Love 5. Growth 6. Faith 7. Trust in Divine Power
MY STORY We take it as a privilege to be able to work with our Saviour to assist people who have become powerless over their addictions, we are all in a position to help others by the grace of our precious loving Father who has kept us and allowed us in one way or another to undergo various difficulties. I have had firsthand experience of struggling with addictions. Through the ability of God by His Son Jesus Christ I was granted the power to overcome. When I grew tired of a life of addictions, I quit my job and left everything. It was at that point that I decided to ask God to help me. I prayed and asked that the Lord would lead me to where he wanted me to be. One week after that prayer I met a Seventh-day Adventist gentleman whom I befriended. Ultimately the brother was used by God to assist me to recovery and led me to Christ. I began a new life, a life of purity and peace, devoted to helping others find the same joy of recovery in the Lord.

I would really like to encourage those who have a desire to work for the Lord to earnestly pray and seek wisdom. Someone once said, “Concern yourself only with ‘what’ you have to do, not with ‘how’ you have to do it.” ‘How’ is supposed to be God’s problem. Just obey and do ‘what’ the Lord desires from you. God desires all who come into his fold to go and preach the loving truth to others. When one person repents and forsake his evil ways there is great rejoicing in heaven and amidst friends and family. The one who is found is also sent to call others. By our willingness to become missionaries God is able to use us in the spreading of the Gospel truth. Missionaries well equipped and knowledgeable are able to reach many who would otherwise not be reached. Do you desire to help the Reclaim Your Life Recovery Centre, or a person who needs recovery? Do you want to be a volunteer? Need more information about the programme or if you may be interested in becoming a missionary feel free to contact us at info@reclaimyourlife.org.za

LIHLE’S STORY
My name is Lihle. I am 25 years old. I was born in a Seventhday Adventist Christian family in the Nyanga Township of Cape Town. I did everything that Adventist kids do, including being a member of the Adventurer and Pathfinder clubs before my life turned bad.
It was
when I turned 15 that I began making bad choices. I stopped going to church and started befriending people who also did not go to church. I became rebellious at home and started doing things my way. My addictions started with smoking cigarettes leisurely. By the time I was finishing standard four, I had started carrying a gun to school that we had stolen from a friend’s relative. I started stealing and doing all sorts of wrong things. In standard five I joined a gang - we carried more guns and knives. My parents sent me to another school hoping that I would change my ways. Instead I influenced other kids to join me in my evil ways and soon became a gang leader. Things took a really bad turn; I saw my friends dying one by one, and then I went to prison, at first for three weeks, at another instance for two years. I have been shor three times and survived all the incidences. In all my life of gangsterism, my mother always suffered from stress and several diseases because of my bad lifestyle choices. She would always tell me how I made her sick and that one day she may not be able to wake up because of the stress I inflicted upon her. Each time she said those words, they made me to think. I felt guilty. During the last week of December 2013 my mother came to me and told me about the Recovery Centre in the Free State that my sister told her about. She suggested that I should go there, learn some skills, change my bad habits and take some time to think about my future. I told her I would think about it. I decided to give my mother’s suggestion a try and go to the Recovery Centre in the Free State. The program was to start in mid February 2014. My mother bought me clothes and other items I needed for the program. At some point I had a mind not to go but I realised that if I didn’t, my mother would be very disappointed and heartbroken. I decided to give it a try, maybe it could be the solution for my life. As I write this testimony, I am now 11 weeks clean from my addictions and from my life of gangsterism. I am happy with the Recovery program at Reclaim Your Life Recovery Centre. I have learned and still continue to learn a lot of things; life skills, addiction education, nutrition & cooking, gardening, and more about God. I have been involved in recreational activities that build my will and self-confidence. I have recovered my true self-worth and have given my life to Jesus Christ. I want to grow my relationship with Him. I want my life to change completely as I already see the changes and I am praying that God will keep me clean until Jesus Christ comes again.

How to Study the Bible, How to give Bible studies, Righteousness by Faith, The Sanctuary and The Second Coming of Christ. • Healthy Living The Healthy living part allowed us to understand the body that God has given us and made. The book of Psalms says that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” and Paul tells us that the body is the temple in which God longs to reside, but more than that, it is the temple that every other person who doesn’t know Jesus will come in contact with. So from preparing healthy meals to exercising, we
learnt how we could be physically prepared to be able take the gospel to the world and be good examples of Christ wherever we mission to be. . Evangelism God is an evangelist at heart, and the Bible teaches us in the words of Jesus recorded by Luke in Luke chapter 19 and verse 10, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost”. AMEN shared in the heart of God by taking part in evangelism endeavours where we participated in door to door ministry in the communities of Salt Rver, Lansdowne and Ravensmead. Besides the STP, AMEN held its third annual Bible conference under the theme AMEN – Advent Message to Every Nation, where 300 participants gathered to be trained, equipped and motivated to take vital steps forward in their Christian experience and for the furtherance of the work of the Gospelhere in Cape Town. A Discipling Ministry Following the words of Jesus, “make disciples of all nations”, in the last three years, AMEN has seen many young people that have attended STP and our annual Bible conferences not just growing in their relationship with Jesus but young people have taken seriously the work of God and with the willingness ofheart for the mission of Jesus
answering the call to baptism and leadership roles in their local churches. It’s also a blessing to see that even though some young people might havenot been called to leadership roles in their local churches, this has not slighted them to be active members in their local church. This shows major growth as the Gospel doesn’t become AMEN driven but driven by Jesus through those that are willing to surrender their lives in the hands of Christ and being a light in their respective homes, communities and churches. A Preaching Ministry As the command of Jesus to His disciples is to go to all the world and preach the Gospel, AMEN has always served as a platform for young people to be groomed to preach the Gospel of Christ. The year 2013 saw AMEN actively preaching the gospel presenting at numerous Week of prayers and divine hour appointments at local churches in the Western Cape, Camp meeting in Hartenbos, prayer meeting gatherings and taking the message from within and out to the world through train ministry and open air evangelism. With the work that God has allowed us to do through the ministry over the last three years we have but just touched the surface of our mission and our reality of
the Second coming of Christ. Yet, we are not discouraged. We move forward in prayer and standing on the promises of God in His word to accomplish what we have been called for. We are far short of success but it will be achieved as we continue to allow God to use and mould us in our life work. Success in any line demands a definite aim. He who would achieve true success in life must keep steadily in view the aim worthy of his endeavor. Such an aim is set before the youth of today. The heaven-appointed purpose of giving the gospel to the world in this generation is the noblest that can appeal to any human being. It opens a field of effort to everyone whose heart Christ has touched. {Ed 262.1} With such an army of workers as our youth, rightly trained, might furnish, how soon the message of a crucified, risen, and soon-coming Saviour might be carried to the whole world! How soon might the end come--the end of suffering and sorrow and sin! How soon, in place of a possession here, with its blight of sin and pain, our children might receive their inheritance where “the righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein forever;” where “the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick,” and “the voice of weeping shall be no more heard.” (Ed 271.2}
All these activities create a buildup for the Conference which happens annually during December in Cape Town. At the AMEN Conference, young people from all over the country have the opportunity to come together to be inspired and trained to spread the gospel by both locally and internationally experienced speakers.

Mission Stories
A First Time Mission ExperienceBrilliant Tshabalala relays her first mission outing with Mission Cohort.
”It all seemed so unbelievable. This was something that I’d never experience in the same way again. My expectations did not turn out the way I had imagined. Meeting new people, being introduced to a totally new community and being taught new ways of doing certain things was an experience I would regret to trade for anything. As I made my shy entrance into Park Station, and made my way to the spot where it had been agreed to meet prior to our departure to the Free State, I thought I was approaching the wrong group but then my eyes brought relief to my nervous, unsettled heart, as I saw two of the missionaries I knew. This would be my first mission and my first encounter with young people from different parts of the country, willing to venture into unknown territory for God and who I would later call my fellow missionaries and my brothers and sisters in Christ. I must admit, when everyone eventually arrived, I told myself that this was going to be a week to remember. This mission I was about to attend was the break I needed to change my life; it was my path to revival and reformation. For seven days, self had to decrease and Jesus had to be uplifted so that the work we had been called to do would be a success through the work of the Holy Spirit in each and every one of us. It was not going to be an easy endeavor but through Christ who strengthens us, we would win a soul or more to enlarge the kingdom of God. Yes, God could have done it Himself by speaking to the Ngwathe community, but I believe that He honored us with an invitation to become co-workers with the angels and preach the gospel and the truth about Jesus Christ and His second coming. Our mission leader announced what our duties would be during the trip. I was appointed as
A
time-keeper, which was a surprise task I accepted graciously. I struggled with this and we fell behind schedule a number of times but eventually I learnt how vital time is in the work of the Lord. A moment wasted, could mean a soul lost. My field partners were the best teammates. Working with them was such a joyful and peaceful experience. Sharing the word of God brought contentment and a feeling that the heavens would rejoice at the hearts that received the word of God. I learnt and resolved while working on this mission that the six prescribed days of labour each week, are not only about sitting in an office and doing paper work or whatever one’s occupation might require, but also soul winning for the glorification of the Lord. Moving from one house to another, one individual to the other, is a work that if done with a willing heart and most importantly a heart guided by the Holy Spirit, will sow good seeds and the reaping thereafter will be accompanied with a golden crown when our Father

It was a good feeling to reminisce about our calling to the teeming fields of Ngwathe…the gleaming gold of ripened grain… He called us to labour and we answered to the call. And indeed it was a privilege and no sacrifice at all.” Brilliant N. D. Tshabalala is a student at North West University, Vaal Campus

In Christ we have the victory- Gugulethu Ndlela The past mission in Edenville was my second mission and it was my first one without my sister who was instrumental in me getting involved. As a final year student at the University of Johannesburg, I had to make a lot of choices concerning my life and purpose. I’m glad that God took charge and led me to mission work through my sister. I didn’t feel capable at first but when I made a decision to depend on God fully it became easier. What I learnt as a missionary is that God allows you into people’s lives so that they can see Him through you and that experience in itself is just mind blowing, You meet people who will open themselves to you and tell you about their problems in hope that indeed just like David you come in the name of God and like Peter you have no silver or gold to offer them but The Cross. It was on a Monday evening; our first day in the field, we were all very tired but for some odd reason I couldn’t fall asleep. Around midnight, I heard someone calling out for me. It was dark, both literally and figuratively and as I listened trying to recognize the voice, I figured that it was one of my missionary sisters. She asked me to pray for her because she felt evil spirits within her. She was lying down at the time facing the opposite direction. I knelt and started praying then I felt her hand grabbing my arm. I was startled and I stopped praying to look at her. She then started shaking uncontrollably and that’s when I woke up the ladies in the room. We prayed together but she screamed bitterly and that led us into tears. Someone suggested that we call the guys in the other room and I saw almost all the ladies run for the door, I was scared but the sister, possessed, grabbed me and said “don’t be afraid”. After she had said that I wasn’t so scared anymore, I took her into my arms and prayed then everyone else returned and immediately joined in. We were praying, crying, singing, and praying some more for about 3-4 hours, hearing blasphemy against God from the demon speaking through her. It was basically trying to instil fear in us but we held on to the promises we could remember from the word of God. It was when the demon screamed “GET AWAY FROM ME JESUS!!!” that we knew that Jesus was with us and she was to be delivered. It was an awesome moment I must say. She then related what was happening to her while we were praying for her: she told us that she saw me waving to her from a distance and that gave her hope and I was in awe at what had just happened.
If someone had told me that I was going to have to face that on my first mission, I probably wouldn’t have gone. It was a true test of faith and an experience I will count as a victory. Jesus has the power to deliver us from sin and the evil one, all you have to do is trust Him and take Him at His word. Times will come where things will be tough, but don’t be dismayed because these are the trials that build your faith and strengthen your relationship with God. A true walk with God is experienced through the work of saving others, that’s why I encourage all those who desire a walk with God like Enoch did, should take part in the business of saving souls through our Lord Christ Jesus. Gugulethu Ndlela is a young lady from Kempton Park in the Eastrand and she was a final year student at the University of Johannesburg at the writing of this testimony. SOUL REAPERS Soul Reapers, also known as Revived & Energized Adventists Proclaiming the Eminent Return of our Saviour; is a missionary group of young Seventh-day Adventists, whose sole purpose is to make well known the crucified, risen and soon coming Saviour. Indispensable to our existence is the training and equipping of missionaries for service. The REAPERS concept was conceived in 2011 when three of our members miraculously made it to a mis-
sion in the city of Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. This program was hosted by “ZIMPACT our lives and our approach to the gospel work for ever”. Our members had never witnessed such a cohesive army of youth from all over the globe united in doing God’s work. I will never forget how, that Sabbath afternoon, more than two hundred young people gathered in the hall to distribute literature as part of an outreach program at a nearby township called Makhokhoba. We had to distribute a
set of Bible study guides as invitations to the Evangelistic Crusade that was to take place. The unyielding devotion and zeal exhibited by those young people that day brought tears to my eyes. It was then that the three of us felt the urge to start something similar in Cape Town. Since then we have laboured determinedly and prayerfully to establish this group. Our burden is to make people realise our vision and the need for missionary work.

“ Jesus wants to use us to carry on His earthly ministry, which was to “bring good news to the poor, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.” Soul Reapers were officially organized in April 2012, when our first training was held. This was followed by a mission trip to the Free State in June 2012, organised by Mission Cohort. As a result of this mission, two branches were established. Our next mission was a partnership with the Unashamed Missionary Movement for a mission in Venda where a branch was established. Take up thy bed and walk Trevor Moyake
During the last four days of the Reapers mission at St Helena Bay in December 2013, I visited a home where a lady was very ill. She spent all her time in bed and during the day her family would have her lie down in the lounge. I introduced myself and told her which church I came from and the work that Reapers had come to do in St Helena bay. I offered to study the word with her and pray, to which she consented. With just four days left of our mission trip, I realised that I would have to be concise in my bible study and considering the condition she was in, it was important to get her medical attention at the earliest. When she got up from her bed for prayer I noticed that her legs were swollen and bruised. I asked her to sit while I knelt to pray. She explained that she had been to clinics but not received satisfactory diagnosis or treatment. She had also not been able to work for two months; being the breadwinner in her home this posed serious financial problems for the household. After our meeting, I invited the rest of the mission team to assist in this home. The medical missionaries amongst us played a very big role in restoring Nothemba’s joy. They nursed and treated her, and in three days the swelling in her legs had improved significantly and she was able to get out of bed and walk with greater ease. I never quite completed my studies with her as I had hoped, but after our departure, she opened her home to Bible workers based in St Helena to continue studying with her. I am in touch with her to this day and we have developed a good friendship.

Lwamondo Badama Mission
14 December 2013 - 04 January 2014 Romans 8: 28
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. In the deep rural areas of Vhembe District in Venda lies a village named Lwamondo kha muvhundu wa Badama. It was to this village that God sent the Vhazwali Mission Group of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to proclaim His soon return. The plan for the first week was for the group to conduct door to door ministry and invite people to a two week crusade. However, with the heavy rains that ensued it became doubtful that this program would succeed. Very few doors were knocked on and the missionaries prayed and hoped that God
through His Spirit would bless their efforts the same way He had multiplied the two fish and five loaves that many would be fed. The first few tent meetings were poorly attended, with only a handful of invitees showing up. To further dampen the prospects of the crusade, one morning the tent was found razed to the ground...not caved in because of bad weather but intentionally torn down... No one could understand who could have done such a thing and why but it was decided that the meetings would continue without the tent.
however, felt that this was not in line with the principles of the gospel and requested for the release of the men. No one could have anticipated this act of forgiveness... News travels very fast in small communities and soon everyone knew about the open air church and the drama with the tent being torn down, and the offenders being caught then sent away free. Bizarrely, the hype around this story resulted in more and more people attending the services. On the final Sabbath of the Campaign, two people gave their lives to God and were added to the church.
Not very long afterwards, the people responsible for destroying the tent were identified and reported to the local chief who declared that the offenders would be punished for such a disgraceful act. The missionaries,

And Philip ran to him, and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Understandest thou what thou readest?”. And he said, “How can I, except someone shall guide me?” And he besought Philip to come up and sit with him. “How could I not have understood, these truths are crystal clear?” These were the words of Tshinakaho, a young mother and diligent VOP student. Tshinakaho had understood all the Biblical teachings, except that she could not come to terms with the Sabbath Commandment. This was despite all the efforts to explain by the Bible Study group sent by the Church. After an evangelistic week of prayer, she expressed her love for the Bible and its truth as well as a desire to join a church, yet there was one hindrance – the Sabbath observance which just did not make sense. Her home is close to the church and so she attended the meetings regularly. On the Sabbath a friend invited her to the Sabbath rest but she declined. In the afternoon, the Bible study group went to visit her and she had an opportunity to explain to that that unless
she understood some truth unknown to her, she would keep seeking. She spoke of how she was frustrated because she had previously affiliated herself with many churches, yet she still knew that there was still a missing puzzle piece. After an earnest plea for wisdom from above and a Bible study, the Sabbath truth became crystal clear to Tshinakaho. She found the fountain of water that quenched her thirst. At the time of writing, Tshinakaho and her children were preparing for baptism. Tshiseluselu Evangelistic CrusadeMarch 2013 Luke 10: 19.
Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall in any wise hurt you. “Call off the baptism, it is too risky” said the elders and deacons when they discovered that the dam in which the baptismal ceremony was going to be held was infested with crocodiles. There was no alternative pool in which the baptism could take place. A young student Pastor called Pembelani had conducted a two week evangelistic campaign in a rural area named Tshiseluselu. As a result of this campaign, an old
lady gave her life to Christ. The old lady, together with others, was with joy anticipating her baptism when it was rumored by one of the local elders that there were crocodiles in the dam and that the baptism had to be cancelled. Holding a baptism under these conditions would be to “tempting the Lord.” The Church leaders held a meeting and it was decided that the baptism would be cancelled. Pembelani realized that except for the minister officiating in the baptism, everyone was against going ahead with the plans. This meant that there were no deacons availing themselves for service. Seeing this, he volunteered to stand on the inner side of the dam, so that if there was an attack he would be the only victim and the rest of the baptismal candidates would escape and seek refuge. The baptism was conducted, and God held His creatures as His children accepted Him in baptism with great joy in their countenances. One of the elders who had said the baptism should be cancelled spoke to Pembelani and thanked him for standing against the crowd. To this, Pembelani replied, “Crocodiles hear the voice of the Master.” A Sabbath School branch was started. The old lady opened her home for the meetings to be held. To this day, God has kept it going and the members testify of God’s goodness and His faithfulness in keeping His promises.

“And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.” Daniel 12:3. “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” Revelation 22:12. {RH, December 12, 1878 par. 1} There is a constant conflict between the two great armies led by the Prince of life and the Prince of the powers of darkness. The devil, assisted by his angels, is constantly engaged in the most determined effort to gather souls under his banner, while Jesus Christ and holy angels are diligently at work pressing back the powers of darkness, rescuing souls from the grasp of Satan, and gathering them under the blood-stained banner of Prince Immanuel. Those who are truly soldiers of the cross of Christ will not be indifferent spectators, but will take an active part and manifest a personal interest in this conflict. They will “know the fellowship of his sufferings,” being co-laborers with Jesus Christ in disseminating light and truth to redeem the purchase of his blood from the slavery of sin and death. {RH, December 12, 1878 par. 2}

Those who shirk the responsibilities which Jesus would have them bear, choosing a life of self-indulgent ease, will be destitute of spiritual joys and divine peace, and cannot be partakers with Christ of his glory. Selfish enjoyments will never satisfy the cravings of a soul whom God has qualified for a higher sphere and nobler mission. {RH, December 12, 1878 par. 3}

The burden of the work has been left principally upon ministers, while many of the church have stood looking on to see how matters were coming out. There are fields of missionary labor which have been open for years, calling for workers, and yet many have not seen or realized the necessity of their doing anything. The work, they thought, was for some others, but not for them. There are hundreds and thousands who can work if they are so disposed. Up to the present time they have done nothing but serve themselves. This class of donothings and know-nothings, as far as the work to be done in God’s cause is concerned, will never hear the well done from the lips of the Majesty of H e a ve n . They have n o t ta ke n a n y i n t e rest in the many branches of the work. They have not learned how to work for the Master to advance his cause in doing to the utmost of their strength and ability to save souls from error and death. I was shown that there must be with men and women a general waking up to the needs of God’s cause. The minds of our sisters may be expanded and cultivated. If they are devoted to selfish interests, the soul will be left dwarfed. Emptiness and unrest will be the result. {RH, December 12, 1878 par. 7} A solemn responsibility rests upon the ministers of Christ to do their work with thoroughness. Many have left some portions of the work undone because it was not agreeable, expecting the next coming minister to finish it up for them. They had better not engage in the work unless they can bind it off thoroughly, so that it will not ravel out. There are many minis-

ters who do not connect so closely with God that they can feel and realize the wants of the people and give them meat in due season. They should lead the young disciples along wisely and judiciously, step by step, onward and upward, until every essential point has been brought before them. With the burden of the work upon them, it is their duty to lead the people along until they can present every man perfect in Christ. {RH, December 12, 1878 par. 8} A mere assent to the truth is not enough. There must be prayerful labor with those who embrace the truth, until they shall be convicted of their sins and shall seek God and be converted. Then they should be instructed in regard to the claims of God upon them in tithes and in offerings. They must learn that the tithing system is binding upon God’s people in these last days as truly as it was upon ancient Israel. The tract and missionary work should be presented before them. Nothing should be kept back. But all points of truth should not be given abruptly in the first few lectures; gradually, cautiously, with his own heart imbued with the spirit of the work of God, the teacher should give meat in due season. {RH, December 12, 1878 par. 9} Ministers frequently neglect these important branches of the work,--health reform, spiritual gifts, systematic benevolence, and the great branches of the missionary work. Under their labors large numbers may embrace the theory of the truth, but in time it is found that there are many who will not bear the proving of God. The minister laid upon the foundation, hay, wood, and stubble, which would be consumed by the fire of temptation. Some proved to be gold, silver, and precious stones;
these from principle would cling to the truth. But if the teacher of truth had brought these converts along as he should have done, presenting before them the obligation which rested upon them, many who afterward drew back to perdition, might have been saved. {RH, December 12, 1878 par. 10} Another minister follows the first, and in the fear of God presents the practical duties, the claims of God upon his people. Some draw back, saying, “Our minister who brought us the truth did not mention these things. We have been deceived. These things were kept back.” And they become offended because of the word. Some will not accept the tithing system; they reject systematic benevolence, and become offended, turn away, and no longer walk with those who believe and love the truth. When the tract and missionary field is opened before them, inviting them to work in it, they answer, “It was not so taught us,” and they hesitate to engage in the work. How much better it would be for the cause, if the messenger of truth had faithfully and thoroughly educated these converts in regard to all these essential matters, ever if there were less whom he could number as being added to the church under his labors. {RH, December 12, 1878 par. 11}

Self-denying benevolence characterized the life of Christ. He came not to seek his own. He identified his interest with the wants of his people. He went about doing good. Our sisters who have hitherto lived for self and have cherished habits of indolence and selfindulgence, can now, through the grace given them, imitate the life of Christ. The exercise of disinterested benevolence will strengthen in their own hearts the principles taught by their divine Master. {RH, December 12, 1878 par. 13} God gives regularly and freely to bless man. His gifts are not only rich and munificent but systematic. The light of day, the recurring seasons, the dew and rains causing vegetation to flourish, are blessings of God unceasingly flowing to the children of men. And God requires of those whom he blesses beneficent efforts in conformity to the divine Model. Our liberalities are never to cease; our charities must be regular and constant; and order must be observed in the work. It is not a trait of the natural heart to be beneficent; men must be taught, giving them line upon line and precept upon precept, how to work and how to give after God’s order. {RH, December 12, 1878 par. 14} We are required to do good
and bless others by our labors and prayers as well as by the gift of means. In order to be Christians and to gain Heaven we must imitate the great Exemplar. He cheerfully gave his life to ransom an apostate world. Selfishness and worldliness were condemned by the daily life of Christ; and none of us can live for ourselves and yet enjoy the approval of God. {RH, December 12, 1878 par. 15} Our sisters have been too willing to excuse themselves from bearing responsibilities which require thought and close application of the mind; yet this is the very discipline they need to perfect Christian experience. They may be workers in the missionary field, having a personal interest in the distribution of tracts and papers which correctly represent our faith. All cannot go abroad to labor, but all can do something at home. Many occupy their time in needless stitching, and trimming, and ruffling of their own and their children’s clothing, and thus lose golden moments in which they might improve their talents by efforts to get the truth before others. We should, as Christians, have an abiding sense that our time, our strength and ability, have been purchased with an infinite price. We are not our own to use our
moments in gratifying our fancy and our pride. As children of the light we should diffuse light to others. It should be our study how we may best glorify God, how we can work to save and bless souls for whom Christ died. In working to bless others we shall be gathering strength and courage to our own souls, and shall receive the approval of God. Hundreds of our sisters might be at work today if they would. They should dress themselves and their children with simplicity, in neat and durable garments free from adornment, and devote the time they have spent in needless display to missionary work. Letters may be written to friends at a distance. Our sisters may meet together to consult as to the best manner of labor. Money can be saved to present as an offering to God, to be invested in papers and tracts to send to their friends. Those who are now doing nothing should go to work. Let each sister who claims to be a child of God feel indeed a responsibility to help all within her reach. The noblest of all attainments may be gained through practical selfdenial and benevolence for others’ good.

Optimised Digestion The most basic function of the digestive system is to break down the foods we eat and to assimilate them as nutrients into the body. It is also called the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) or the alimentary canal. The GIT is composed of a hollow tube beginning at the mouth and ending in the anus. The liver, pancreas and gallbladder are called accessory organs of the GIT since they have tubes that open into the alimentary canal delivering enzymes and substances that aid with digestion.

There is another important organ that is easy to forget when discussing digestion – the brain. When you see, smell or think of certain foods you may feel your mouth filling with saliva. That is a reflex from the part of your brain called the hypothalamus which houses the appetite centre. If you are struggling with low appetite, drinking a bitter tea like wormwood (lengana, umhlonyane) or Schweden bitters an hour before meals may be helpful. However, the frontal lobe of the brain has the final say on whether you eat, what you eat and how much. To illustrate how digestive system works, we will follow a peanut butter sandwich meal down the canal. We will also discuss ways of optimising digestion and problems that may occur in the canal. As you bring the sandwich to your mouth you start salivating and then you bite a piece off with your front teeth (incisors). Unfortunately, for some people this is the last contact their food will make with teeth, which results in inefficient digestion. We have a set of teeth and the back called molars whose duty is to grind the food to a fine pulp so that it mixes extremely well with the saliva which begins the digestion of carbohydrates (starches). A 2008 study published in the journal of American Dietetic Association shows that chewing thoroughly increases satiety and leads to eating less. Another terrible mistake that people make is to drink water with their meals. This diminishes the flow of saliva from your salivary glands. It has also been found to increase insulin requirement in diabetics, by up to 40%. I used to believe that I could not eat bread without some beverage. When I learned better I stopped the wash down habit, and within a few weeks my mouth was well hydrated. And now I never wash down anything. Sprinkling or grating some ginger into your food will assist with saliva production. Back to our sandwich, the starch in the bread has been partially digested, and the fat in the peanut butter also but to a much lesser extent. The protein in the peanut butter and the gluten part of the bread is not yet digested. It must wait until it gets to the stomach. Once the food in the mouth has reached a desirable consistency, the tongue forms it into a ball called a bolus and it pushes it back toward the pharynx, and the pharynx pushes into the oesophagus. The oesophagus propels the bolus into the stomach. There is a valve (sphincter) between the oesophagus and the stomach, which usually stays tight shut and only opens to receive food and fluid from the oesophagus. Heartburn is a common sign of malfunctioning sphincter. The sphincter malfunctions when people eat too much or lay down immediately after eating. Caffeinated beverages cause a relaxation of the sphincter and can cause heartburn. Heartburn may also be a sign of unhappy liver. It is a common symptom in people who are taking a lot of prescription drugs, because it usually the liver’s job to detoxify the system. The stomach maintains an acidic environment which is essential for protein digestion. The enzyme pepsin which digests proteins is activated by the acid. The acid is also important for killing germs that we swallow with our food. Inadequate acid production may lead to the growth in the H. pylori bacteria in the stomach, which can cause gastritis and ulcers. Having too much acid in the stomach will also cause ulcers. So the key is balance. One of the things that upset this balance is caffeinated drinks. I met a man in 2002 while doing a door to door health work who drank 4 to 5 litres of Coke daily. I asked him two questions, how long do you sleep per night and do you have ulcers? He slept for 3 or 4 hours if lucky, and yes he had ulcers.

The stomach produces a lining that protects it from digesting itself. This protective barrier is compromised by smoking, eating spicy foods and taking pain medications such as aspirin and brufen. On the contrary eating foods from the cabbage family (raw, juiced or cooked) improves this barrier. So try some cabbage juice, steamed broccoli & cauliflower, red cabbage coleslaw, kale relish or brussel-sprouts soup. On average the stomach should take about two hours digesting a meal before it starts emptying it into the intestines. Drinking water with your meals will not only diminish salivary flow it will also dilute your stomachs digestive juices. This will cause a delay because your stomach needs to reabsorb that water before digestion continues. And the longer food stays in that dark and warm environment there more liable is it to ferment which results in halitosis. Another cause of prolonged digestion time is eating between meals. Oh! You may have heard that you need to eat six to eight small meals a day. This popular recommendation is not based on physiologic facts but opinion. Just like the popular myth of eating according to your blood type. When you eat a meal before your stomach has emptied the previously eaten food must wait for the new food to reach it consistency before it can empty. Studies show that eating between meals can delay stomach emptying by up to 13hours. Physiologically speaking, one needs to space meals at least 5 hours apart. The stomach usually takes a further two hours to empty an average full meal. It deposits about a teaspoon of chyme into the small intestine. Chyme is the digested food mixed with gastric juices. At the very point where the chyme enters the intestine the pancreas opens into the alimentary canal secreting substances that neutralise the acid in the chyme. The gallbladder also makes its deposit of bile which emulsifies the fats (like soap) making them more mixable with water and digestive enzymes. The small intestine is the main site of nutrient absorption. Its surfaces has several folds called villi and microvilli which like tiny worms suck the nutrients out of the chyme as it flows by. If these folds where ironed out the surface area of the small intestine would be the size of a tennis court. The efficiency of absorption is increased by adequate blood flow. Having an active lifestyle, taking a short walk after meals, cardamom and ginger may be helpful in increasing absorption. The role of the large intestine is to reabsorb water and minerals from the chyme, and to covert the undigested matter into semisolid faeces in preparation for defecation. If our sandwich was made of whole wheat it should exit in 40 to 70 hours. If it made of refined white flower it may take a week or more. Unrefined whole foods shorten transit time and reduce the risk of constipation. If this is augmented by adequate water intake defecation should be a breeze, and one runs no risk of piles. I hope that next time you sit down for a meal and think of all the internal processes to follow you will sit back and exclaim like David “I will praise thee Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. And may you also be inspired to keep your digestive system in good working order. It is not called a system for nought you know.

Hark, the voice of Jesus calling Hark, the voice of Jesus calling, “Who will go and work today? Fields are white the harvests waiting, Who will bear the sheaves away?” Loud and long the master calleth; Rich reward he offers free. Who will answer, gladly saying, “Here am I. O Lord, send me”? If you cannot cross the ocean And the heathen lands explore You can find the heathen nearer You can help them at your door If you cannot speak like angels, If you cannot preach like Paul, You can tell the love of Jesus; You can say he died for all. If you cannot be a watchman, Standing high on Zion’s wall, Pointing out the path to heaven, Offering life and peace to all, With your prayers and with your bounties You can do what God demands; You can be life faithful Aaron, Holding up the prophet’s hands. While the souls of men are dying And the master calls for you. Let none hear you idly saying, “There is nothing I can do,” Gladly take the task he gives you; Let his work your pleasure be. Answer quickly when He calleth, “Here am I, O Lord, send me!”

The Gospel Driven Life - Kimberley 2014.
Earlier this year, Gospel Commission received a call from the Kimberley Seventh-day Adventist Church
to partner with them and co-host a week long Campaign in the Northern Cape Capital. This invitation was gladly accepted by the Gospel Commission even though circumstances, lack of resources and experience to run a campaign of this magnitude appeared forbidding. The campaign was set for the 28th of April to the 3rd of May. Kimberley is the capital city of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It has a considerable historical significance due to its diamond mining past. To the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Kimberley is even more significant because it was in Kimberley that the first Seventh-day Adventist Church in South Africa was built. Notwithstanding, the Northern Cape is currently one of the slowest growth areas of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in South Africa. Throughout the planning for this event, Gospel Commission saw the hand of God guiding in their ministry. The weeks leading to the campaign saw the members of the Kimberley Seventh-day Adventist Church entering the Galeshewe Township to extend an invitation to its residents to come and hear the Word of the Lord. The Gospel Commission Team members from both Cape Town and Johannesburg were able to attend the campaign towards the weekend. Pastor Thula Nkosi, and Pastor Nhlanhla Buthelezi, were the speakers and The Lord used them in a mighty way to communicate His message to His people. At the end of the campaign, not only were the church members revived, challenged and equipped to lead lives powered by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but also saw many local residents’ health needs being attended to through the daily Health Expo that was being conducted throughout the week. When men and women, both young and old, dedicate themselves to the service of their Master and become co-labourers together with Christ, He blesses their efforts, multiplies their resources and draws people to His kingdom. weird and wonderful signs of the devil’s influence on Hollywood. At that time I loved singing and our group was performing one of Lady Gaga’s songs on stage at a varsity competition and I was one of the lead singers. So I felt deeply betrayed and deceived to have been supporting these people who so blatantly blaspheme Christ and openly declare their allegiance to Satan. I was beyond shocked to discover that in all this dark symbolism, my beloved Catholic church was just as involved. But what really shook me that night was how real and disgustingly cunning the devil really is. Before all this I’d always known Satan and his demons to only possess people in the way I’d seen in ‘The Exorcism’ or heard from gory stories told by my Pentecostal friends.

The Contagion
” God truly loves me and has died for my sins” Born and raised in a Christian home, I grew up
believing in a loving God who sent His Son to earth only to be killed by the Jews. And being Catholic, I was accustomed to praying every night as my mother had taught us, even when I left for varsity. For so many years my sole reason for praying was just to acknowledge God’s presence and authority in my life and I was content with that. In fact I was well pleased with myself because unlike other Catholic youths I knew, I prayed every night, attended Mass and even willingly went to confession (even as infrequent as once in five years). I also believed that God was pleased with me because He acknowledged my prayers, whether I was reciting countless “Hail Marys” or saying my favourite line; “Thank you Lord for saving my soul, thank you Lord for supplying my needs, Amen”. I never saw the need to have my relationship and communication with Him any other way. From a young age, I had come to realise that a lot of non-Catholics always seemed to have negative things to say about us but I concluded that they were just jealous of us because their churches were inferior to ours since they all broke off from us anyway. I never engaged in faith discussions with them, as a result, my beliefs were never challenged; Until one dreadful evening when my friends and I were in our computer lab on campus. They started talking about the occultism in the music industry and we were browsing the internet for hidden clues in their lyrics and other
The realisation that he had deceived me all these years and had poisoned the music I’d grown up loving to sing just sent the coldest shivers down my spine. And again my church being involved was just beyond me. I was so scared that I couldn’t even pray as I usually did because I truly didn’t know what to say. Shaken and overwhelmed, with tears streaming down my face, I went to another friend and asked her to pray for me. The Lord clearly led me to her because she was a Seventh-day Adventist and was one of the people who used to annoy me with things like “you guys worship Mary”, so she was the last person I’d naturally confide in about faith issues. But the poor girl took me in and prayed with me, though she had been studying for a test she was writing the next day. One topic led to another and she showed me how the Catholic Church had changed the Sabbath to Sunday. This time, I wasn’t too shocked because I felt so betrayed by the church I’d defended for so long, such that I was prepared to forsake anything that still bound me to them.

From that time on, I started attending the Seventhday Adventist church and watched DVD’s that further unveiled the truth to me. When I told my parents about my decision to leave the Catholic Church they were not in opposition to my decision but I’ve come to realise that they are not open to hear anything that speaks against the Catholic Church, but I know that it’s God’s will for all men to come to the knowledge of truth, and I know that by His grace they will.
And I’ve come to realise that my testimony is not merely how He called me out of Babylon. My testimony is and continues to be my rendition of how a sinner like me got to know and see that God truly loves me and has died for my sins; it’s about how He is leading me to be rooted and grounded in His love and how I’m learning to daily surrender and take Him on as my Saviour and faithful Friend.
Through the years, I can trace God’s goodness in my life even before I became aware of this deception.
Effect… My testimony I, Sibongile Gumede, was raised in a devout Catholic home. As I was growing up, I developed this feeling that I would not stay in that church all my life, that when I was older I would choose a different church.
Sibongile Gumede,
“God has richly blessed me with so much since coming into the Seventh-day Adventist church” There was something missing there in my experience with God. It was as if I’d I always known that the Catholic Church was not where I belonged. Towards the end of high school, God drew me nearer to Him. I started being more interested in the Bible and my relationship with Him became stronger. I then came to university in 2010; it was my first time to be away from home for such a long time. I remember feeling so lost and afraid. I started attending one of the charismatic churches but I never felt at home there either but God was working in my heart and in the situation I found myself in. A friend of mine, who is a Seventh-day Adventist, always disappeared on Saturdays and I was very curious about where she went. We started speaking, doing Bible studies and watching DVDs (Doug Batchelor, Mark Woodman) and she invited me to church. I accepted the truth and got baptized.
To say that my family was greatly upset by me becoming a Seventh-day Adventist is an understatement. They were very disappointed, angry, hurt and embarrassed. Things have become better with time but my relationships with each of them have been shaken. It has not been easy, but I have faith that God is working in their hearts. God has richly blessed me with so much since coming into the Seventh-day Adventist church – my relationship with Him has deepened and He has given me so many brothers and sisters too. I can truly say that I am a new creation in Him and that He has blessed me abundantly. I praise God for how He has worked in my life and I encourage everyone to never underestimate the power of doing seemingly small things for soul winning like being a good friend, handing someone a DVD, praying and living a consistent life; for you never know what great effects these “small” actions can yield.
