Spring is here! The perfect excuse to update that wardrobe.

AW trends The season’s new trends have never been so characteristically Spring. For decades, we’ve all been trying to get out of the box and think of new ways to celebrate this time of the year through our style. But the beauty of nature is so undeniable. And it’s always an amazingly familiar experience to go back to the basics. Check out our hottest themes this month and use our recommendations as your definite April shopping guide. Geometric progression

See by Chloe – AED2,686

To counter the ergonomic shapes and curves of nature, look at stern geometric prints rendered in visionsoothing shades. The key to channelling this trend is repetitive, serial patterns that incorporate hues like coral and aqua as an ode to the season. Richard Nicoll – AED4,913

An important highlight of Spring 2014 is the scuba trend, appearing on the runways from London to Lisbon, and showcasing everything about the aquatic recreation, from its signature colours to the suit’s uber stylish jersey fabric. Figure-hugging numbers mould your body while keeping everything in, yet allow you to move as freely as a silk onesie, while sportsilhouette styles give you some room to hide imperfections.

This Spring/Summer, we delve into the muchawaited event in Asia’s fashion capital, the HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/ Summer (FWSS).

What L’s by Eliza Yeung

erving as a perfect gateway in Asia, Hong Kong is also known to be a shopping destination and a hub for trading in the garment industry, everything from textile supplies to distributors. Indeed buzzing with tremendous opportunities in setting trends in fashion, the city furthers its leadership mark in the industry especially with one of its most important events: the Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/ Summer.

GREGORIUS VICI by GREGORIUS VICI

Organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the Hong Kong FWSS is the ideal platform for reaching out to a wealth of global design and brands. A statutory body established in 1966, HKTDC is the international marketing arm for Hong Kong-based traders, manufacturers and service providers. HKTDC organises a number of trade fairs each year, some of which are the biggest of its kind in Asia. The events range from

medical devices, printing and packaging to fashion and textiles all through book fairs, with Hong Kong Fashion Week being one of the major events in the city. To be staged during July 7-10 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), the Hong Kong Fashion Week expects a good attendance this year. Part of the attraction is the extensive level of international exhibitor participation as the fair attracts more than 1,260 exhibitors. Highlights of the show include Fashion Gallery, with its high fashion and brand labels; the International Fashion Designers’ Showcase, featuring designer collections and fashion design talent; World of Fashion Accessories; Men In Style; and many other accessory zones. In the coming edition, Activewear and Sportswear zone will be in debut to tap into the dynamic market demand.

Fully-seated seminar to talk about the latest trend of fashion

Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer provides ample business opportunities

Runway shows and fashion parades are to be held throughout the fair offer, hoping to add attractions for buyers and publicity to the fair. More inspiration can be found directly through fashion displays. Meanwhile, the fair’s trend seminars always attract huge crowds as prominent international trend forecasting agencies (including WGSN Group and Peclers Paris) present on what will be in vogue next season. The fair also features fashion development seminars presented by international industry experts. The Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer will continue to host the Buyers’ Forum that made its debut in 2013. It is where buyers could discuss business opportunities and sourcing needs in emerging markets based on their experiences. Buyers can make valuable new contacts through networking opportunities throughout the fair period, including various Happy Hour events. Buyers are invited to join buying missions to visit the fairground. They can meet the exhibitors which best match their sourcing needs. The fair offers a one-to-one meeting with pre-selected exhibitors to save the sourcing time. Other services including guided tours and assistance from onsite buyer ambassadors. These services help buyers to match with the right exhibitor more effectively.

Fashion shows and parades showcased the new design and fashion

Furthering into the unique features of Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/ Summer event is the presence of SmallOrder Zone that displays a fine selection of products available for purchase in small orders (from 5 to 1,000 pieces at the Expo Drive Entrance). Recently, Small-Order Zone won the UFI Marketing Award 2013 which reaffirms that this initiative is highly effective and welcomed by both buyers and suppliers. Being a trade affair, the success of Hong Kong Fashion Week for Sping/Summer lies upon the number of business to be made. There is no doubt it will achieve its goals. HKTDC has the expertise and experience to ensure the exhibitors that they will have the chance to network with the most important buyers from around the world and recruit new distributors with great potential. The fair also carries out international marketing campaigns to recruit new distributors. The HKTDC offers additional services to ease doing business with buyers. Executive travel incentive, special air fare, visa application assistance, cash savings, discount offers and complimentary drinks offered by local restaurants, sightseeing tour and shopping outlets with the ‘HKTDC Trade Fair Privilege Coupons’ are to be expected in Hong Kong Fashion Week for Spring/Summer staging. If these would not attract trade visitors, what else would?

FWSS offers a lot of networking opportunities for buyers to meet with industry peers.

Instant Ways to

Inject Oomph into your look 20

Guide From that perfect red lipstick and fabulous skin to that ultra luxurious silk scarf, getting that instant wow factor just in time for the spring and summer season is easy with Saadiya Ahmad’s compilation of instant wow-making tips. These head-to-toe tips can give you an immediate edgy oomph to your individual style.

Fabulous Fashion Tips Laughter Power A wow factor also means injecting a sense of humour into your style and Victoria Devin suggests that shoes are really good accessories to add a twist to your outfit. “Bionda Castana spring summer 2014 cut-out mesh stilettos in lemon are very elegant and they add that touch of fun that you need to finish the perfect look,” she says.“Colourful, fun, and bright shoes will give a spring to your step.”

Be Sure To Have One Statement Piece The fit of the dress combined with a statement element will provide elegance and wow factor, suggests Devin.“The statement element can be a structured jacket or a leopard print or a colourful handbag by Barbara Bui, depending on your taste and what you love the most,” she says.

Love Thyself Globalisation, explains Victoria Devin, Owner of Hermione Boutique, essentially means that trends are becoming worldwide, so it’s important to take a unique approach to what fashion has to offer. She advises to be yourself in the middle of it all; fashion shouldn’t be try-hard.“It is always good to highlight your strengths; find something you like about your appearance and accentuate it,” she says.“For example, if you have a small waist you can emphasise it by wearing a skater dress from Jay Ahr.”

Instant Facial Perfection with Ellansé For an instant oomph appeal that will instantly give you Angelina Jolie’s high cheekbones, a chiselled jaw line or just a more rested look, opt for state-of-the-art derma fillers Ellansé. Developed by Aqtis Medicalis, these use what is known as ‘Tunable Longevity’ and offer four types to suit different patient needs and based on their lasting results, namely: S-short, M-medium, L-long and E- extra-long with the S and M being available in the UAE. You can enjoy your new look immediately with no downtime and no side effects and the best part is that the product lasts for one to two years after which it will fully disappear after the desired performance duration. Ellansé dermal fillers are exclusively distributed by KALIUM; prices start from AED2,000 onwards

The Ugly

Side of Fashion While the fashion world, with its glamorous designers, wellheeled fashionistas and overall stunningly beautiful people, punctuates a semblance of perfection, the harsh reality is that eating disorders and addiction is often rife in this field. Saadiya Ahmad takes a closer look at the darker side of the fashion industry.

24

focus

Thin is In Flip through any glossy magazine... there is a bombardment of super skinny, shiny, beautifully photoshopped images of young girls with impossibly thin waists, gaunt faces and statuesque frames; an ideal that is unfortunately being perpetrated in an industry bubbling with issues from eating disorders to drug addiction. In fact, one of the most known eating disorders is anorexia in which the person struggling with it loses an extreme amount of weight, usually 15 percent below what the average person’s body weight should be. To be considered anorexic, this weight loss should not relate to any special medical condition or treatment causing the decrease in weight, rather it relates to something that the victim inflicts upon his or her self. According to Dr. Saliha Afridi, Clinical Psychologist and Managing Director of the Lighthouse Arabia Community Psychology Clinic, it is loud, clear and obvious the messages girls and women are getting about what is considered beautiful in our society. “Girls starting from a very young age are inculcated with thin images which are paired with messages of what is beautiful,” she says and even more so now perhaps with the advent of social media. Not every girl has a body of a Disney princess or of a teenage movie star – but Dr. Afridi explains that because television, glossy magazines, and social media are so invasive, it becomes a reality for most girls. Girls, she adds, will go to extreme and dangerous lengths to attain what is just an airbrushed or animated version of society’s ideal beauty.

Societal Messages With our super skinny models, is it any wonder that we, as a society, have become accustomed and even approving of super skinniness, even if it borders on the unhealthy? So much so that we are conditioned to believe that thin is in fact the only way to be? Unfortunately this pressure is triggering dangerous trends in eating disorders at even younger ages than ever before. Eating disorders, points out Dr. Afridi, are complicated mental disorders and in fact, a person is not just self-medicating and self-punishing when they engage in disordered eating, although there are components of that in their behaviours. “A person’s relationship with food is affected by many factors, including media, family upbringing, societal pressures to be thin, their job expectations, competitiveness with others and low self-esteem,” she says. “Having an unhealthy relationship with food, whether it’s in the form of starvation, bingeingpurging, or overeating are all extremely dangerous for the body.” It can result in malnutrition, electrolyte imbalances, and respiratory or cardiac arrest.

25

focus

Treatment for addiction Depending on the severity of the case, Dr. Afridi says that addictions can be treated with psychotherapy and sometimes medications. “And depending on how severe the addiction is, the person may need to be admitted to an inpatient facility to facilitate a detox and keep them away from all triggers while being monitored and undergoing intensive therapy,” she explains. For the person who denies being addicted, Dr. Afridi points out that there are techniques such as motivational interviewing which are often used to elicit and strengthen a person’s motivation to admit their problem and change. “Other times an ‘intervention’ of sorts is done with the addicted person,” she says, and this is when the person’s family, social, and occupational life may come together to address the person’s harmful way of life.

Drugs The world is fashion and fashion models, tells Dr. Afridi, is a very high paced place with a lot of events and socializing. “In addition to the high paced lifestyle, there is a lot of pressure to look good and appear the part,” she says and it is precisely these two factors--lifestyle and pressure of looking good—which can be very difficult to navigate for many of the men and women that are a part of this world. She adds that many individuals who are part of this world have to go out and socialize or make appearances every day of the week as part of their job—surrounded by food, drugs, and/or alcohol and having to fight the temptation all the time is very tasking for anyone’s willpower. “The addictions don’t develop overnight, but rather they develop slowly over time where a person engages in the behaviour repeatedly,” she says and it may start off as a way of socializing which then becomes their norm, or it might start of as way of decompressing from the rough day— which then becomes a way of life.

26

focus

Other Addictions Besides drugs, there is money, gambling, retail and the likes; and Dr. Afridi says that substance abuse addictions are slightly different in the way they would be treated; however, they are related to the same neural pathways. The same dopamine pathway is engaged in all addictions. “All addictions involve the addictions cycle which includes the triggers, the craving, the ritual, the usage, the guilt and again back to the triggers.”This cycle continues until the person makes a decision to no longer engage which is most often facilitated by therapy.

Tips to Help Someone You May Know Suffering from An Addiction:

• Dramatic weight loss for one’s age and height • Refusing to eat in public • Eating only specific foods – specifically those low in calories and fat

• Skipping meals often with no explanations • Covering the weight-loss by wearing baggy Credit: www.casapalmera.com

clothing

• Obsessing over body image • Basing self-worth on body image and weight • Complaining about being overweight when they are actually underweight

• Missing three or more menstrual periods in a row for women

• Avoiding social gatherings where food will be involved

The Top Signs of Anorexia:

1. Know that there is only so much you can do. No one can help the person unless they themselves want to be helped. 2. Don’t ignore the problem. If you notice shifts in a person’s behaviour, make sure to bring it up and discuss it with them. Also know that when you confront them, they will most likely lie to you. 3. Don’t aid in their addiction. They may ask you for money or they may ask you to cover for them while they engage in their addiction – don’t agree to do it. This is a difficult task because you want to be a good friend, but by being ‘there’ for them, you are actually aiding the addiction. 4. Do research: Whatever your friend is struggling with, do some research on the internet about support groups, therapists, or facilities that deal with such issues in your area. This way when the time comes, you will be more equipped for problem solving and guiding your friend in the right direction. 5. Listen without judgement. This is easier said then done. Once the person finally decides to talk to you about it, don’t panic and don’t problem-solve right away – just listen with an open heart and then ask them if they want your help or advice before you offer any.

Men’s Fashion

Look dapper, always

AW chats with two gurus of men’s fashion to understand how the industry has changed, and where it is going.

oMar Bin KheDiYa, FaShion entrepreneur anD the FounDer oF Multi-BranDeD BoutiQue o ConCept Store. Define men’s fashion in the modern day Men’s fashion is very simple. Even in modern times where there is a wider range of fashion for men, it is still very minimal. I would say for men, fashion is the way we are able to curate these simple pieces and wear them in a way that makes sense and also stands out. How has men’s fashion evolved? Men’s fashion has come a long way, it’s becoming more androgynous and people are beginning to pay attention to clothes for men. There was no fashion week for men before, but now we have menswear fashion week in major fashion capitals. And menswear designers are emerging every day. Do the men in the region have their own distinct style? I would like to think so. I rarely see men who aren’t impeccably dressed, be it in the traditional Kandora, suit or a pair of jeans and T-shirt; there is always something extra that gives the outfit a distinct flair. What are the biggest influences on men’s fashion?

34

I think it would be functionality. That should be one of the biggest influences on men’s fashion. How should men shop for their clothes and shoes? What are some of the things they are doing wrong when shopping for themselves? When men are shopping for shoes, they should take into consideration the weather, their body type, size and fit, colours that look good on them and the occasions they will be wearing the outfit or shoes to. The mistake most men make while shopping is with fit and colour, men usually don’t consider these things, but they are important especially in suits. High style VS high street? Should it make a difference to men? Men tend to buy a lot of quality pieces. We would rather have few clothes that are of good quality than a bunch of clothes. In this case high style is usually a preference. In what aspect is men’s fashion lagging behind their female counterpart? I would say men’s fashion is not as versatile as women’s fashion. Though I don’t think

that’s necessarily a bad thing. What is the next upcoming trend? I see a lot of metallic and futuristic styles emerging in menswear. Where do you see men’s fashion in the future? As you know fashion goes around and comes around. Right now menswear is shying away from the basics but I am predicting that in the future it would be back to basic cuts and simple lines. Can you name some upcoming brands that men should keep a look out for? Public School, En Noir and Orange Culture With regards to traditional wear, how can designers keep it fresh? Or should it always remain the way it is to maintain that heritage? Recently, there have been attempts by a few regional designers to add an edge to the Kandora. We have had some of these brands at O Concept What are the 5 key fashion apparel and accessories that every man should have in his wardrobe? A good wristwatch, a pair of black wing tip oxfords, a crisp white shirt, a suit and a nice belt!

Men’s Fashion

Suhail Matar, Fashion Designer, Founder & CEO of local upstart Velorum

Define men’s fashion in the modern day? Men’s fashion has become more daring, definitely. The once considered faux pas, such as full suits in prints and patterns and embroidered high cuff shirts are now almost the norm. It is very translatable for men and women How has men’s fashion evolved? The evolution of menswear has happened so finely that the elegance is still there. The outlines of the classics, such as the sports jacket and three piece suit have been refined of all excess in prior generations. It’s sleek, cut, clean and we have wax coated denim. Do the men in the region have their own distinct style? Expensive is the first word in my head. Men in this region love to indulge in luxe fabrics and neutral colours. However, there is a wave of edginess growing in the region, born from access to our favourite celebrity icons. What are the biggest challenges facing the men’s fashion industry in this region? The challenges faced as a designer is creating a sense of uniqueness in men’s fashion without being too loud and in your face. This puts the pressure in attending to detail in a finite way. Every man wants to to stand out in a crowd, but never in bad taste. Are the men in the region up to date in their fashion sense? And how log does it take for the latest fad to reach here? Dubai for me is second to none in providing the latest fashions, it is almost as if they are couriered overnight from the runways. The trends and fads now are easily triggered by a picture on a social media site and in an instant it is a trend you are subconsciously following. What are the biggest influences on men’s fashion? Musicians without a doubt have a monopoly on the influences of the region’s fashion and style. As a designer, my influences (without sounding cliche) come from media, a person I have met or an experience such as a holiday. l also like to adapt on trends, looking at a design and giving it my own twist. High style VS high street? Should it make a difference to men? No. A high street suit can make a man look just as dapper as a bespoke designer suit. High street also provides alterations.

36

Men’s Fashion

Dubai for me is second to none in providing the latest fashions, it is almost as if they are couriered overnight from the runways. In what aspect is men’s fashion lagging behind their female counterpart? I don’t think men’s fashion is lagging. They are two ends of the spectrum, and sometimes they borrow ideas from each other. What is the next upcoming trend? Sneakers. Sports footwear made in exotic materials such as crocodile and python. Where do you see men’s fashion in the future? I see fashion being very cyclical; designs paired with innovative ways in cutting and construction come back more on pulse with the tastes and movements of the time. New ways of laying abstract materials and fabrics, and the revitalising of former designs. With regards to traditional wear, how can designers keep it fresh? Or should it always remain the way it is to maintain that heritage? As the saying goes ‘A classic never dies’ .For me there are already many ways to the wear the traditional wear without making any changes. It will always make a statement. Give some tips on how an individual can bling up traditional wear. The local traditional wear is very simple and elegant. Footwear such as ostrich shoes, or a classic gold and leather watch and the most effective yet understated ways to make it more exciting and up to date. Speaking on behalf of my gulf counterparts, bling cufflinks and carefully constructed headpieces and a rare stone mesbah. What are the 5 key fashion apparel and accessories that every man should have in his wardrobe? Five pieces is the minimal number of pieces that should be key to a man’s wardrobe. However, the key pieces that should line every mans closet are; a good quality bomber jacket, a well fitted pair of jeans, dress shoes in black, a crisp white shirt and a watch that can move from day to night.

AW Tests:

The LPG New Endermolift Facial Treatments Trying out the revolutionary treatment made us believe that fresh and radiant skin is not just a dream. Read on as we expose what happens to our face when we’ve decided to go under the Endermolift. 48

‘Look years younger, faster with LPG’s new Endermolift facial treatments’, according to the informational material. It furthers, ‘It is a proven and effective beauty ritual for a healthy glow and a natural youthful complexion. It’s never too late to reverse the effects of aging. LPG, the world leader in cellular stimulation, shows women the secret to looking young and beautiful with glowing skin’. With these words flashing before my eyes, I could only think about my face with less wrinkled lines, firmer skin and zero

fluffiness and darkness around the eyes. Tempting, very tempting, I told myself. And after weighing my fears over the benefits of such a beauty adventure, I heeded. The promise The LPG’s New Endermolift treatment is a natural and non-invasive beauty treatment that will have you looking younger – radically reversing signs of ageing. In a matter of six sessions, the skin specialist can perform relaxing, comfortable treatments that leave you looking brighter, tauter, and years younger. LPG has developed its

Beauty Special 100% natural anti-ageing technique which can wake up sleeping cells deep within the skin, to produce an enhanced natural supply of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid by 80%. This technique firms, tightens, and re-sculpts the face, neck and décolleté erasing the signs of ageing. The treatment A total of four sessions was deemed appropriate for my beauty adventure, and although I was bit sceptical that those would be enough to see clear results, I said yes. In normal cases, it would require an average of 6-8 sessions of which 2 sessions per week would be ideal. Also, I was told that the new Endermolift offers immediate results, including a healthy glow and a natural, soothing lifting effect. Apparently each session’s results add up to fill in wrinkles, redefine contours, and clarify the complexion. At the beginning of my first session, the first thing my beautiful and experienced skin specialist did was assess my skin. She began by discussing about the machine and the treatment, and then probed about my beauty goals. We agreed that it would be best if I would get Anti-Aging Firming Endermolift to firm the skin on my face (especially in the cheeks and jaw areas), Anti-Aging Re-plumping Endermolift to reduce the fine lines and wrinkles on my forehead, and Endermolift Detox to help treat the dark circles and huge bags under my eyes. After having selected the preferred treatment, I was comfortably settled on the treatment table wherein I was treated carefully for the next 30 minutes. The loud noise coming from the equipment may be a turn off (as it sounds like a small helicopter

toy hovering above your face). When it started pinching,. I thought it would sting at least a bit but no, it was not painful at all even when the skin felt a bit hot after about 10 minutes of the repeated motion. Meanwhile, the tool used in the cheeks and jaws was different from that used in the forehead and under the eyes. For when it came to those portions, the treatment turned from painless to relaxing and refreshing. It may be embarrassing but I dozed off each time the treatment went to that part. The result Monitoring results is essential to the success of the program. With my Endermolift session, I did not notice dramatic results right after the first visit but the morning after, I did observe some difference – my under eye was not so fluffy anymore! The second session provided me with radiant skin despite my lack of sleep, and even allowed me to attend a work event without wearing make-up yet still looking fresh. After the third session, a friend told me that the facial treatment was working effectively since my skin looked less dehydrated, and I was glowing despite the obvious stress and no sleep. When the fourth session ended, I was afraid that the results would diminish in the same instant as it came. Yet days have passed, and while my lifestyle had not changed, my skin was still beaming and lustrous. I hope it would stay that way forever but I know that I should take care of it with healthy diet, good amount of exercise, lots of water, sufficient sleep, and more treatment sessions.

In the end, what I loved about the treatment, aside from the effective and immediate results, was the fact that it does not hinder you from putting on make-up, from doing other facial rituals like waxing, threading, etc. Other facial treatments have limitations while LPG Endermolift has none. It’s quite amazing what a push on a button in that equipment would do to my face – it made me feel prettier, more confident as ever.

The technology behind LPG uses its patented technology in the CELLU M6 machine which has three customised ‘lifts’ to deliver microbeats to the skin’s surface to stimulate youth cells in-depth, restarting their natural production. First, to clarify your complexion, LPG uses the ‘slow lifts’ for mechanical stimulation which improves vascularisation and drains toxins in order to result in a smoother complexion. Second, to replenish wrinkles, LPG uses the ‘speed lifts’ mechanical stimulation to reactivate cellular metabolism. As a result, fibroblasts once again secrete collagen and elastin, the two substances responsible for the skin’s firmness and elasticity. By reorganising collagen fibres, the skin tissue’s architecture appears to be better structured and more uniform. And finally to firm facial contours, LPG uses the ‘high speed lifts’ stimulation to naturally reactivate the production of collagen and elastin, thus rebuilding the skin’s supporting structure.

So too are its distinctively English accords of Central London (to remind the Prince what a terrifically rip-roaring time he had there), Earl Grey tea (his beloved’s favourite) and, for the Prince’s own scent, leather, (to conjure forth the smell of boxing gloves and his glories in the ring). The ensuing cosmopolitan bouquets are a richly fragrant entente between the Orient and bonny old England, which the house is now pleased to revive in two sumptuously packaged imperial eau de parfum. 5. See by Chloé Eau Fraîche’ It’s a new poetic and airy fragrance that evokes the freshness of blooming flower. The first poetic notes of water hyacinth are blended with the apple blossom and the jasmine. Feminine and light, See by Chloé Eau Fraîche evokes the gentleness of a walk through Paris. Beyoncé Rise To honour this elevated and empowering attitude, Beyoncé was inspired to create her newest scent, RISE. It is a rich and intoxicating luminous floral with beautiful top notes of Italian Bergamot, Golden Apricot and Iced Basil Sorbet; Luscious middle notes of Gold Symphony Orchid, Freesia Blossom and Natural Jasmine Sambac, and sensual bottom notes that include Autumn Woods Accord, Cashmere Musk and Vetiver Extract.

5.

For Him Valentino Uomo Its subtle, light, unique signature is only revealed, like the clothes, up close: it is a profoundly Italian blend made of precisely chosen ingredients. Valentino Uomo is enveloped by the limpid elegance of zesty bergamot and its surprising hint of spice. A classic accord, softly smoky woody, with a touch of vagueness that upsets the balance, it is an expression of unmistakable style, the olfactory equivalent of the elegant discretion of monograms embroidered in a hidden place on a shirt.

SCENTS SPECIAL

Coco Mademoiselle: Where is she now? The third instalment to the Chanel Coco Mademoiselle ad campaign has been released, and so far we’ve been privy to its story behind the scenes. Check out the details about the fragrance, the film and its muse, Keira Knightley. The film “Please don’t bother trying to find her, she’s not there,” were some of the words we heard from The Zombie’s hit single used as the background for the much-talked about video featuring Keira Knightley for Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle campaign. Chanel’s third chapter in the Coco Mademoiselle campaign film series was directed by filmmaker Joe Wright, whom the Pirates of the Caribbean star also worked with for the film ‘Atonement’ and 2011’s fragrance campaign. The brand introduced the film with the copy, ‘The portrait of a woman with a unique and carefree style’ to summarise the ideal wearer. The video begins with the view of a pixelated eyeball that shimmers similar to a mirrored disco ball before the iris becomes a hallway lined with monitors screening Knightley’s face. In the distance, the viewer sees a party scene. In essence, the film shows off Coco Mademoiselle who is at a launch party held in her honour, but doesn’t really seem to be

participating. Then, a man catches her eye. She teases him and throws her fragrance to him, as if choosing him, but then she instantly slips away. At dawn, when she is speeding away alone on her boat towards new adventures, they cross paths again by chance and this time she decides to stop… or does she? The face Knightley also starred in two prior Coco Mademoiselle campaigns. The first, in 2007, introduced Knightley’s continued working partnership with Chanel. The second film in 2011, which was also directed by Wright, showed the actress racing through the streets of Paris on a motorcycle. Speaking about her cinematic adventure, the A-lister explained that her character was totally in control of the situation, and she relished escaping the scene on a speedboat, even though she only pretended to drive it down the river Seine. She also spoke about wearing white couture creations of the brand, but might have ripped the bottom of one of the dresses

during the final campaign scene – a similar incident happened when she spilled red wine over her Chanel wedding dress. The fragrance Feminine, young, exciting, spirited and sensual – these are just a few attributes of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle. Its sexy and fresh Oriental fragrance recalls the irrepressible spirit of the young Coco Chanel. The modern scents entices with an utterly feminine composition, expressing refined sensuality and incredible freshness. It is the most powerful, concentrated and long-lasting form of fragrance: the fullest expression of the perfumer’s art. The scent will follow you throughout the day, or evening. The classic bottle signifies personal luxury, and is a welcome addition to any dressing table. Insider tip: The most elegant way to wear fragrance is to apply it to pulse points. The Chanel Coco Mademoiselle range includes Parfum, Eau de Parfum Spray, Eau de Toilette Spray, Eau de Parfum Twist and Spray, Eau de Toilette Twist and Spray, Scented Foam Bath, Foaming shower gel, Velvet Body Oil Spray, Gentle Body Exfoliant, fresh body cream, Fresh After Bath Powder, moisturising body lotion and Fresh Bath Soap

Q&A & &A with Abeer Al Suwaidi

Naming her collection ‘Taboo’, and showcasing the pieces at Zabeel Park Bridge, would show how courageous Emirati designer Abeer Al Suwaidi is. She goes beyond what’s ordinary, and she brings her creativity in Abaya designs. In this issue, AW gets to know the lady, and her successful concept company, Fashion Arabia.

Please share with us how you became an abaya designer. In 2008, I started my abaya designing line through launching USH Boutique, the first multiple-brand abaya GCC store that holds multiple GCC designers under one roof. I then changed the brand name to ‘Abeer Al Suwaidi’ recentl and since then the label has grown from strength to strength. Not only does my brand showcase the work of local and regional designers but also of emerging talents as well. The inspiration started when I couldn’t find a unique abaya in the market. I used to spend loads of time searching for abayas with different styles but to me, they all looked very similar, nothing stood out. Therefore; I decided to start a brand, creating unique pieces and ones that I know I would love to wear. After I had launched my brand, I realised it wasn’t just me looking for something different, and hence my clientele and the brand’s popularity grew. Who or what influenced you to enter the field of fashion? I have had creativity and a passion for fashion for many many years, ever since since I was in sixth grade in fact. I remember winning an award for wearing a trendy outfit, and decided there and then that fashion would always be part of me. My designs revolve around materials and cuts that can’t be found in mainstream collections, they are unusual to say the least. I find great passion when I transform a traditional garment into a contemporary piece of art. Who or what is your biggest inspiration when it comes to designing? There are lots of big names in the fashion world that I personally admire and get huge amounts of inspiration from. These include Yohji Yamamoto and Garsa De Guersain and many designers from Japan. How do you start working on your collection? How do you decide what concept or theme you will use for each collection and what is your typical day as a fashion designer? All my collections are always related to a unique theme. Annual collections are inspired by the season; depending on if it was spring/ summer or autumn/winter and the upcoming trends. As many people have seen from the latest fashion show, in my Taboo collection, I have mixed different elements that are not related but are consistent in the way I see it. My collection

54

Spotlight pieces are more like canvases for me to reveal messages I want to express, it just happens that I have the passion and talent to transform these messages into stunning abayas. What challenges do you usually encounter as a fashion designer? I have lots of ideas in mind but the implementation process is what takes quite a bit of time. For instance, I would have a very interesting idea in mind but not quite sure if applying it on to fabric would really be successful. Another challenge is that you need to be constantly creative enough to work with and transform a four-yard piece of fabric into an innovative garment season after season.

How do you overcome said challenges? Failure has no place in my life. I always keep trying till I find the solution to overcome any challenge I face. Actually. I believe that challenges are good for me as they allow me to learn and become stronger to overcome the next one. How do you define your personal style? What are your fashion must-haves? I would say that I have a very unique taste. I consider myself quite practical in my designs but I do wear a lot of clothes that people may find out there and unusual. Can you tell us more about your brand? At this stage, I am quite happy and proud to see the successful level that my brand has reached. My abayas are uniquely designed for women with characters of

55

Spotlight

independence and power. I want my customers to feel special when they wear my abayas; my abayas are customised for them and not just anyone can pull them off! What is your latest collection? What is the theme behind it and what inspired you? My latest collection is the ‘Taboo’ collection and the theme behind it was mixing the different elements of magic, art and glass, and music – unusual elements to mix together. What Taboo means to me is showing such creativity on the traditional abayas. What makes your designs unique? I always make sure my designs are different from what you see in the market. I use different fabrics and ways of applying embroidery. You can sense in each piece the imagination I’ve applied. One of the compliments I get most from my customers is that they are addicted to my abayas and the way they make them feel something special when they are in them. That’s why my brand and my designs are unique – you feel different always. What sort of woman would wear your collection? Who is the woman in mind for your label and/or designs? My designs are for independent and powerful women who are up to wearing trendy and unique pieces. My take on modern abayas has been well received by women from many different nationalities. It is nice to know that Arab women are really keen to wear modern abayas too. How do you see the Middle Eastern fashion influencing or entering the global fashion trends? I would say that the fashion industry in the Middle East region is becoming stronger as we speak. We are witnessing that there are

56

Spotlight quite a number of designers in the region who are growing massively and we are definitely competing at a global level. What is your ultimate goal for your label? My aim is to keep my label growing and growing for the coming generations and to further push boundaries of the traditional abayas but with fashionable, innovative yet respectful twists. What makes you proud as a fashion designer? What do you love most in this profession? I am very proud of using the traditional clothing in the designs I create but adding my twist to them. I believe it is not an easy process to show creativity while using the traditional theme. It’s not everywhere in the world you can see modernised traditional clothing that you can wear all the time. I love that I can do that and that my clients are always keen to see what is next. Any projects/shows in the pipeline? What keeps you busy these days? I have a couple of projects in the pipeline that I can’t reveal at this stage but I promise that they will be unique! Last question – what makes you proud of your heritage? Everything about UAE makes me proud of my heritage. There are no words to express how proud I am to be from a country that provides such a fantastic mix of traditional and modern lifestyles at the same time. As you know, Dubai is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. I love how you can feel security, innovation and flexibility all in one country.

Her purpose of creating a line of clutches was to expand the use of the clutch into more than just an evening accessory.

What is your main source of inspiration when designing a collection? My source of inspiration originates from my fascination with art and architecture. My colour and texture ideas originate from art and the form, and the geometry of the clutches are derived from aspects of architecture. What are some hot trends for spring/ summer 2014? Crop tops, pastel hues, classic flapper silhouettes, chunky/geometric embellishment and the whole athletic/ sporty-chic trend. What is a women’s most common fashion faux pas? Not knowing that ‘less is more’. What are five hot pieces all women must have in their wardrobe? A pair of white tailored pants, a blue crisp shirt, a pair of strappy heels, a black leather jacket and an oversized jumper. How would you describe Dubai’s fashion scene? It’s fascinating how it has evolved and it has absorbed lots of attention that sometimes unfortunately seems to be slightly exaggerated. The L’AFSHAR Collection is available at s*uce.

and her brand takes classic silhouettes and cuts, like the basic button-down shirt or traditional abaya, and gives them chic modern makeovers, whether that means spicing up sleeves with Arabic text, throwing kitsch embellishments onto a collar, or creating a maxi cardigan out of on-trend cotton prints for those who live in the desert heat and look for clothing that is modest, but still fun and stylish.

What is your main source of inspiration when designing a collection? My main source of inspiration is usually the fabric I’m working with. Unlike other designers, I don’t start with sketches, my inspiration stage begins when I’m in the market looking at different prints and planning out their potential.

Showing too much skin, which takes classy straight to trashy. What are five hot pieces all women must have in their wardrobe? A striped top, graphic tee, oversized knit sweater, pearl necklace and statement cat-eye sunnies.

What are some hot trends for spring/ summer 2014? Pastel colour-blocking, cotton kimonos and capes, metallic shoes, frilly socks and messy braids.

How would you describe Dubai’s fashion scene? It’s vibrant and creative, constituting a great blend between Eastern and Western style, and is continuously developing and expanding.

What is a women’s most common fashion faux pas?

Two cofounders and are heading their label House of Nomad, a ready-to-wear brand which caters to men and women who are fashion savvy, culture-oriented and who love to wear pieces of clothing that are unique to the region. What is your main source of inspiration when designing a collection? It really depends from one collection to another. Sometimes we are inspired by the fabrics we see or our day to day surroundings; we just allow ourselves to focus on things that a lot of other designers overlook and take them as inspiration and create a whole cohesive collection out of it.” What are some hot trends for spring/ summer 2014? These would include bold prints, monochrome, a strong texture overdose, luxe sportswear, and neutral tones.

60

What is a women’s most common fashion faux pas? Not dressing for their body type, where pieces are either too loose or too tight. What are five hot pieces all women must have in their wardrobe? A basic blazer which is perfect for a day to evening transition. Then nude heels which go with everything. And big sunglasses because we all have our puffy eyed days. Also a little black dress which works for any evening occasion and last but not least, a fitted pair of jeans which can be matched for a day time look or a girls night out look.

How would you describe Dubai’s fashion scene? The scene here is very diverse. Overall, the fashion scene is constantly growing. But we do have to say, the mistake that people make in this region is – just because you can afford to buy luxury items, it does not mean that you are fashionable. Marie Stalla’s

self-named fashion label aims to create women’s clothes for a specific reason, addressing a topic which she is very passionate about; femininity in its social environment. Her work is highlighted by two main concepts, self-assurance via the basics and the expression of a strong personality through colours. Lightness, joy and cheerfulness are paramount in her life therefore she wants to transmit them through her creations that are simple yet sophisticated and easy to wear.

What is your main source of inspiration when designing a collection? The new ‘Ready-to-Wear’ collection is actually an exclusive collaboration with o’ de rose, an eclectic boutique in Dubai. We share lots of values with the Managing Partner and Founder, Nadine Khoury. Our collaboration came naturally: a combination of basics designs including a focus on colours. This relationship black/colour strongly reflects my favorite themes: joy, lightness and cheerfulness. What are some hot trends for spring/ summer 2014? This SS14 will see the power of black that will be perfectly associated with white; you will find a lot of electric blue in designs this year as well. Full lace clothes will be the major trend, the sweater is revisited with chic pieces, and the tuxedo will meet the casual trousers.

How would you describe Dubai’s fashion scene? There is this amazing creative energy in this city that you can feel and touch in the street and in the air. And while Dubai has not yet reached the level of the big fashion cities, it is an exceptional place that hosts many creative minds. There is actually a young generation of designers starting to emerge in the fashion industry, and they are driven and taken in an artistic mood that is developing over here. I have high hopes for the future of Dubai on the fashion scene. The Marie Stalla collection is available exclusively at o’de rose Boutique located on Al Wasl Road in Dubai.

What is a women’s most common fashion faux pas? We should pay attention to the total look – women shouldn’t select all the pieces they intend to wear from one particular brand but rather mix and match styles and fabrics that complement each other. Wearing all white from head to toe is also another faux pas.” What are five hot pieces all women must have in their wardrobe? A black lace top to easily wear to a dinner or party. Also a delicate black top with string straps, this is a very feminine and an essential piece, you can wear it with jeans or classic trousers. And you should have a chic white T-shirt; this is an element that will turn any casual outfit into an elegant style. And a basic shaped yet sophisticated pair of trousers, black or beige with some refined details, this is a piece that you can wear to go to work, it is also convenient to wear for dinner. And finally without hesitating, an LBD (Little Black Dress) that every woman feels elegant and comfortable in.

Beauty and Brains Three Arab Women Scientists Honoured with International L’Oreal-UNESCO Fellowships

T

he L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science 2014 Awards Ceremony was recently held at the Sorbonne in Paris in honour of the five L’Oréal-UNESCO Laureates and 15 International Fellows. Of the 15 International Fellows, three were Arab scientists, and we congratulate Professor Alia Shatanawi of Jordan, Adila Elobeid of Sudan and Farah Ouechtati of Tunisia on being awarded this prestigious honour. Professor Günter Blobel, Nobel Prize in Medicine, presided over the ceremony, which was also attended by Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, and JeanPaul Agon, Chairman and CEO of L’Oréal and Chairman of the L’Oréal Foundation. L’Oréal-UNESCO ‘For Women in Science’ was founded in 1998 in the belief that the world needs science and science needs women. For the past 16 years, the program has honoured exceptional women scientists across the globe, whose outstanding achievements have contributed to the advancement of scientific knowledge and helped change

62

the world for the better. Every year the program awards Fellowships to promising young women researchers at the crucial points in their careers when stereotypes and pre-conceived notions can be most detrimental. Societal pressures leave women largely underrepresented in scientific professions. Across the world, fewer than one in three scientific researchers are female, and less than 3% of all Nobel Prizes awarded in the sciences have been given to women. Since 1998, the L’Oréal-UNESCO ‘For Women in Science’ program has recognised over 2000 women scientists in 115 countries, two of whom later went on to win the Nobel Prize. These women are living proof that talent and passion can overcome any obstacle. In addition to the 230 local Fellowships awarded annually by L’Oréal subsidiaries around the world, the UNESCO-L’Oréal International Fellowship program was created in 2000 to encourage a select group of 15 extraordinary International

Fellows at doctoral or postdoctoral level by supporting their work for two years in prestigious institutions outside their home countries where they gain a unique experience and build important networks. This year, the Awards Jury in Life Sciences, presided over by Nobel Prize winner, Professor Gunter Blobel, and including the eminent Professor Lihadh Al-Gazali, Professor in Clinical Genetics and Pediatrics at the United Arab Emirates University, awarded three of these coveted Fellowships to incredible Arab women scientists. These impressive Arab women International Fellows have shown outstanding potential in the areas of neurobiology, human diseases, and genetics and have already contributed to the creation of innovative solutions in their fields. Within our region, and within the international scientific community as a whole, these exceptional women are a source of inspiration for future generations. We must congratulate these beacons of female scientific achievement.

REPORT Alia Shatanawi, Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacology, University of Jordan is awarded for her work unravelling the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of cardiovascular complications among diabetes sufferers. She will be hosted in Georgia Regents University, USA, and on her return to the University of Jordan, Alia Shatanawi will train other researchers in these new techniques and work on a parallel project using samples from Jordanian diabetic patients. She explains that she is grateful for the opportunity, saying, “The number of women in science is increasing, but science is still a world dominated by men.”

Farah Ouechtati, Postdoctoral researcher in Genetics at the Hédi Raïs Institute of Ophthalmology and the Institute Pasteur in Tunisia will be hosted at the Department of Genetics, Institute of Vision, Paris, France and is awarded for her research into the genetic basis of eye diseases and more specifically inherited retinal diseases, by studying the gene, Nxn12, which may also play a role in Alzheimer’s disease. She says, “Inspiring science teachers are key to bringing more students into the profession, teachers that help you learn to think critically and ask the right questions.”

Adila Elobeid, PhD student at the School of Medicine,

Ahfad University for Women, Sudan is awarded for her research into the process of neurodegeneration and her endeavours to raise awareness of brain donation in Sudan, a country where traditional beliefs make it difficult for families to accept post-mortem organ donations. She will be hosted at the Institute of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University, Sweden, where she will have the opportunity to observe first-hand how brain banks are established and managed. Upon completion of her doctorate Adila Elobeid plans to return to Sudan to continue teaching and researching and her goal is to set up the country’s first brain bank. She says, “I think most women in science would agree that it is ever a challenge to be the best scientist one can be and, at the same time, the best daughter, sister and mother one can be. It is, however, a challenge I feel fortunate to be faced with.”

Fun in the alps

The snow may be thawing but you’re still keen to have a getaway high up in the Alps? Faizal Dahlawia introduces us to Kitzbuhel.

W

e had requested for a Mercedes A Class but were instead given the keys to a Ford Focus. Not exactly the authentic German driving experience that we’d imagined but it will have to do. With the satnav changed to ‘English’, we left Munich for Kitzbuhel, Austria, trading some city life for a more intimate time with nature. Situated southeast of Munich and close to the border, Kitzbuhel is about a three-hour drive if you opt for the scenic route and forego the manic Autobahn. The drive itself is quite straightforward and you will pass quaint little towns and of course, amazing scenery. In fact, that is the itinerary that we recommend, start your trip at Munich, soak in what the city has to offer – which is A LOT – and then head to Austria. The nearer to Kitzbuhel you get, the more winding the roads become and you do need to be pay attention if you don’t want to end up in a

72

ditch, or worse, at the bottom of a cliff. So what’s Kitzbuhel about anyway? In short, a haven for nature lovers. It’s a town surrounded by the Alps and activities run all-year round; hiking and golfing in the summer months and of course, winter fun on the slopes during the snow season. Winter wonderland Kitzbühel – pronounced ‘Kitz-bull’ or the way locals say it ‘Kitz-boo-hel’, ‘hel’ as in ‘hurl’ without the ‘rrr’ – is a widely known small town located in the northeast of Tirol, ranking among the most legendary winter sports areas with its 56 cable car and ropeway facilities, 168 slopes and 40 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails. The annual Hahnenkamm race attracts avid skiers in droves, both professionals and enthusiasts alike. Want more? How about 120km of mountain bike trails and approximately 500km of hiking trails. Even in early March, Kitzbuhel is still a skier’s paradise.

As with other ski destinations, there are lessons available for first-time skiers like us. Opting for a 2-hour session, we thought it would be all fun and games, but the fact is, it’s hard work if you’re new to all these. In fact, just putting on the gear was a real challenge. Stepping foot on Kitz Kinderland, the kiddy slope, we attempted to start skiing. Between the constant reminder to ‘snow plough’ by the instructor and the extreme concentration to simply stay upright while moving downslope, we were knackered pretty quickly. And morale wasn’t too great either as one little child after another zoomed past us, almost mocking our futile efforts. At the end of the 2-hour session, and despite the cold, we were soaked in sweat. With the excitement of completing our first ski session and a clear relief that it was all over, we have truly earned ourselves a big dinner. It’s not easy but it should still be fun, and as one local remarked to us, ‘If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong’. Well sir,

travel

easier said than done. Rather we say, if you want fun, then toboganning is your game. Down the slippery and winding slopes of Gaisberg at high speeds on a sled is definitely adrenaline pumping. You can even ride in tandem on one sled to make it more interesting. Just be sure to coordinate with each other beforehand or you might just find yourselves close to riding off the cliff! Want even more high-octane stuff? Go up Hahnenkamm and run off the cliff as you paraglide, almost 900m above ground. As scary as that may sound, it’s no worse than the cable car ride up the mountain which can get a little shaky. Of course this is done in tandem with an instructor but paragliding is easy and the view you get of the quaint town of Kitzbuhel from up top is just priceless. About 15 minutes in the air and then you’re back down, with photos and a video of your airborne experience available for purchase.

73

travel

For a more laidback option, go for a snow hiking tour where you can put on your hiking footwear – those that look like tennis rackets – and just traverse through the fauna. Away from the slopes It’s not all about hard-hitting action. Kitzbuhel also offers plenty of options for those who want a more relaxing winter holiday. Want to shop? You’ve got your Swarovskis and Louis Vuittons. Want something more local? Lots of handicraft shops scattered around the town. Want to just sit by with a cuppa and watch the world go by? Take your pick, from Italian coffeehouses to full-fledged restaurants. If you like your Asian food, there are surprisingly plenty of those around town as well. And if you feel the need to have a fresh set of clothes, a laundromat is available. Despite being a small town, it does cater to every need. And if you’re feeling medieval, just hop on one of the horse carriages to bring you around the charming cobbled streets. One word of caution though if you’re driving: the signs can be a bit confusing and two-lane roads can turn into a one-way streets pretty quickly, as we found out! So just keep a lookout and don’t rely too much on your satnav – that’s how we started driving in the wrong direction.

74

Where to stay? There are many places that you can choose to stay in while you’re in Kitzbuhel. From family-run B&Bs to big chain hotels, there’s a right accommodation for every sort of taste and budget. If you’re looking for a quieter time, away from the bustle of the town and ready to indulge in some spa time, then your best bet would Grand Tirolia Kitzbuhel, the official Home of Laureus Sport for Good since 2009. A mere minutes drive away from the city centre, Grand Tirolia Kitzbuhel promises stunning views, maximum relaxation and genuine hospitality. The facade of the hotel gives you a hint of the simple elegance that awaits you during your stay. After a long drive in the cold, the warm interior of the hotel – log woods, a burning fireplace, warm colours – is a nice welcome. Open the door to your deluxe room and you will be greeted by a view straight out of a postcard; mountain ranges in the distance forming a deep valley, snow covered open fields, inviting ski slopes, all there in full glory for you to soak in. Fancy a meal to fill you up? Choose from a variety of dining options within the hotel itself. The breakfast restaurant, Eichenheim has a lodge setting with lots of wood and warm colours. Sit at a table near the terraces

and you will see the golf course with more mountains in the background. Apart from your normal breakfast fare, you also have a huge choice or organic honeys and teas. If that does not get you pumped up to hit the slopes then there’s very little else that will. Oh and there’s even a kids’ room where you can leave your precious little ones while you go about your activities. Or you could just rent an Xbox system and keep them occupied. After a long day hitting the slopes, all you’d want to do is relax and unwind. Here, you can avail the facailities at Grand Alps SPA, recipient of the Senses Award in 2012 for the best Spa and sports resort. For those who seek relaxation, there is a choice between an oriental Hamam, a Russian Bania and a classic sauna landscape

travel

including a Finnish sauna, bio sauna, a Tyrolian herbal bath and two steam baths. Or you could simply wade in the heated swimming pool, which runs outdoors where you can appreciate the natural surroundings while you tread in the water. And if you must worry about how you look, you can talk to the experienced beauty therapists on hand to give you a boost using some of their carefully selected products. Once recuperated, spend some time at the in-house shopping area, where the Lena Hoschek Fashion Store provides the latest works by the Austrian fashion designer. And walking around the hotel, stop to appreciate some of the artworks that are displayed along the brightly-lit corridors. The hotel truly is an all-encompassing experience. Before you retire for the night,

read a book or just relax in one of the many classy lounges strewn around the hotel lobby. A burning fireplace, warm comfy sofas, and dozens of literary options offer a great way to end the night. And unlike other hotels in the vicinity, Grand Tirolia Kitzbuhel is an all-year round hotel; skiing in winter, and golf in the summer. The Eichenheim 18-hole golf course of the Grand Tirolia Kitzbühel is among the most beautiful golf courses in Europe. The golf course, surrounded by the picturesque mountain backcloth of Kitzbühel was included in the exclusive list of ‘Leading Golf Courses’, where only the 57 best golf courses in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain form part of this quality association. Missing equipment is provided by the Pro-Shop located opposite

of the club house, which also rents out ski gear. A must-visit Not overly commercialised like St. Moritz or some other ski resorts, Kitzbuhel is a charming place for you and your family to really bond over some winter fun. And the people are friendly too, always willing to help out or share some local information. The fact that Kitbuhel offers activities even during the summer makes it an more attractive attractive option to explore the alps all year round. So whether you prefer fluffy snow or green open pastures, if you’re looking for something a little more quiet, a little less crowded, and a little more ‘exclusive’, Kitzbuhel should be at the top of your list.

Mere words cannot describe how it is to be at the happiest place on earth, but Sherry Tenorio gives Walt Disney World a try to see how it serves some of the greatest childhood fantasies 76

“Welcome home,” the door woman greeted cheerfully as we walked through the African-themed door of the Animal Kingdom Lodge, one of the resorts at Walt Disney World. With giraffes and gazelles hanging outside the hotel, animal-lovers would find it easy to walk around the hotel and do some sightseeing. But Walt Disney World does not only play host to jungle animals. This huge theme park at Orlando in Florida covers 39 square miles, an area almost twice the size of New York’s Manhattan Island. According to the informational programs, Walt Disney World, in a nutshell, offers world-class entertainment and recreation centre featuring four theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom); two water adventure parks (Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon); 35 resort hotels (25 owned and operated by Walt Disney

World, includes seven Disney Vacation Club resort properties); 81 holes of golf on five courses; two full-service spas; Disney’s Wedding Pavilion; ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex; and Downtown Disney, an entertainment-shopping-dining complex. Thinking that it is massive is simply an understatement for this dream project of eponymous Disney creator Walt Disney, who unfortunately did not see the full construction of this property in 1971. Meant to supplement the Disneyland in Anaheim, California, Walt Disney World also complements the fantasies of anyone – children to adults – of a magical place on earth. It is easy to fall in love, and feel seven again, when you’re in Walt Disney World. As for me, I instantly felt the breeze of the happy, joyful vibe as I went down the bus, finally off to the first stop: the Magic

Kingdom. The sight of the huge face of Mickey Mouse planted in blooming species of flowers and grasses actually put a smile on my face, not to mention that the parade of Disney characters and Main Street USA – a throwback to the turn-of-the-century Missouri town Marceline where Walt Disney grew up – were amazing views to begin the tour with. While eagerly walking down the City Hall, it was hard to miss the towering sight of Cinderella’s Castle, the popular image stamped in all Disney emblems. Apart from the thousands of other guests (in fact, Walt Disney World welcomes about 250,000 visitors on a daily basis not including the 66,000 cast members it employs) who were taking turns capturing photos, I also observed countless little girls who were shrieking with glee as they perhaps felt closer to their dream of finally stepping into a princess’ castle.

But before continuing on in exploring the Magic Kingdom, an adult’s craving sneaked in. We had to have a cup of coffee, besides, it was nine in the morning. Luckily, Starbucks is now operating at Walt Disney World, and I had the chance to grab the nicest looking latte cup ever. While still sipping coffee and marvelling at the beauty of the park, we then met with the Disney imageneers who explained to us the new area called Fantasyland which houses the first operational one, the ‘Enchanted Tales with Belle’. With the use of impressive technology ‘audioanimatatronics’, several characters from the famous film Beauty and the Beast appear almost identical to how they do on screen, including the matronly teapot Mrs Potts and French candlestick Lumiere. And with a magical door, we were transported inside the dining room where Belle was supposed to meet-and-greet her guests. Both parents and children interacted and played roles in this 12-minute meet-and-greet session.

Other highlights of Magic Kingdom was our trip to the Bibidibabidiboo beauty salon where we took a peek at children getting prepped up to look like their favourite Disney character, a behindthe-scene meeting with Mickey Mouse who met us in his dressing room while rehearsing for his next act, and a host of rollercoaster rides including the Space Mountain. (Insider tip: taking notes of the queue would be good, so it is wiser to schedule your day way before your visit so you can use the advantage of Fast Pass access to the attractions, and save your time queueing up.) Our day ended with a lovely dinner at the Contemporary Hotel, another resort in Walt Disney World, which we were told would serve the best view for the popular fireworks show at exactly 8pm by the Cinderella’s Castle. Indeed, the magical day wrapped up with a dreamy feel with the vision of the romantic sparks of fireworks in that cold winter night.

In July 2012 the second Dumbo was added (flying counterclockwise), along with Casey Jr. Splash ‘n’ Soak Station. The grand opening took place Dec. 6, 2012 for Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid, Enchanted Tales with Belle, Be Our Guest Restaurant, Gaston’s Tavern and Ariel’s Grotto followed by Princess Fairytale Hall, which opened September 2013.

Yet our four-day stay in Walt Disney World was not all about Magic Kingdom. Families would normally allot 10 days to visit all the attractions, capping the vacation with a trip in the Disney Cruise Line. As for our packed days, we managed to also pay a visit to the Hollywood Studios, Epcot and Animal Kingdom. Personally, I felt that Hollywood Studios would appeal to teens more than the tweens and younger tots. It is a heaven for thrill seekers as it does have the best rides in the whole of Walt Disney World. The must-try is the Tower of Terror, where guests would enter the lift of a ritzy 1930s Hollywood Hotel and taken into an eerie looking interior, thrown into darkness and suddenly into freefall. The Star Wars Tours, the rock-and-roll themed coaster and the toy story play area are some other attractions to try. But the best thing you can watch at Hollywood Studios would be the show ‘Fantasmic’ which is the most amazing live entertainment I have personally seen in my life. Meanwhile, at Epcot (an anagram of Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow), the future and history of the world were in highlight. The show

78

of the various pavillions of different nationalities was also something to see. It has several rides, including Test Track, a ride in which guests first customise their cars on computers before ‘trialing’ their inventions during an actual ride around the track. Last but not the least, we went to Animal Kingdom where we were taken into a ‘safari’ that sets off from the surrounds of a dusty African township. While the tour guide explained through the different sights, there was a wide array of animals rarely seen outside of Africa. There are also amusement park rides here, including the Expedition Everest Roller Coaster: the fast-paced ride moves both backwards and forwards, and concludes with a close encounter with a Yeti. Overall, Walt Disney World serves the fantasies of everyone in the family. Aside from the mementos, the thrill rides, the countless photo opportunities, it actually transports its guests to a dream-like land where reality is forgotten, and only the present matters. But for me, it allows me to dream. The visit reminded me to dream bigger, for at the end of the day, looking at the massive Disney empire, it all began with the idea of a mouse.

WHEN

A

ny attempt to get into Dubai Mall, and by extension The Address Dubai Mall, on a weekend can quickly turn into a frustrating experience with the amount of traffic slowing your progress to a crawl at times. Thankfully, the prospect of enjoying a fusion French Indian dinner kept our spirits up. The restaurant in question is La Porte Des Indes, a critically acclaimed Indian restaurant concept with successful existing venues in London and Brussels. It is a shame that many shoppers and revelers do not realise this fine dining outlet exists at The Address Dubai Mall, mere steps away from the shopping haven. Translated to ‘Gateway to India’, La Porte Des Indes’ inspiration comes from the

84

south of India, in particular the Pondicherry region. This former French colony sees food which is very much similar to your typical Indian cuisine but with the heat factors scaled way back, most likely to adapt to the European palate. So what does Indian cuisine with a touch French influence looks like? Well one of the restaurant’s signature dishes is Foiegras tandoori, served on naan bread. Then there’s Crevettes Assadh, tiger prawns simmered in a mild coconut curry. You get the drift. Also, it’s interesting to note that despite being located in a hotel, Muslim diners need not worry about alcohol in their food as they don’t use any. Period. The mood Before we get on with the food, let’s talk a bit about the restaurant premises itself. Now

Recently opened, fine dining restaurant La Porte Des Indes has created some buzz, thanks to its pseudo French Indian cuisine. So when an invitation came to sample what they have to offer, we just couldn’t say no.

we’re told that the branch in London reflects a typical Indian restaurant in its décor, but they wanted to change things up here to keep up with Dubai’s snazzy reputation. A red carpet welcomes you to the reception area, where a huge framed map of the region offers a little background to the place. All nice and well. Once ushered in though, the mood immediately changes; suddenly it’s all blue, and club music gets louder as you move deeper inside. You’re confused. Did you just walk into a restaurant or a lounge? Honestly, it’s a bit of both. Blue neon lights dominate the colour scheme of the restaurant which is separated basically into two sections: the lounge seats and the dining area. The loungers, with the low table and semi-circle setup, allows diners to engage in conversations while

dine out

munching on finger food, much like any seating configuration in a club really. Here, rather than clearly demarcate the lounge area and the dining area, only a raised platform distinguishes between the two. Once seated, your eyes will naturally wander to the ceiling where two jellyfishlike installations and their ‘tentacles’ dangle above you. Add that to the blue water feature on one side of the wall, and you feel you’ve been transported to the depths of the ocean. The dining area is well spaced out, giving each group of diners enough privacy for their conversations without dirtubing the next table. Strangely though, the restaurant was quite empty that particular Friday night, a normal departure from their normal hectic dinner service. But big crowd or small, the live DJ is always there to pump up the tunes and add to your surreal experience. On to the food If you’re expecting a lot of Gallic influence in your food, then you’d be pretty disappointed. But if you’re looking for flavourful Indian food with a touch of class in an artsy contemp setting, then La Porte Des Indes delivers your gastronomic expectations. While waiting for our orders, we were served some light snacks: fried flour sticks with chutneys on the side after which, an interesting ‘almond soup’ , essentially a

milky almond drink with pistachios, were offered to clean our palate, in anticipation of our orders. And then the starters came and we were truly on our way. First up, the Pepper Crabs, soft shell crabs with garlic and black pepper with a ginger and green mango sauce. The crab itself has a strange texture in the mouth but the sauces made that fact nothing more than a mere afterthought. We also went for the fancily named Demoiselles de Pondicherry which basically are large juicy grilled king scallops with a hint of garlic. Soft, not chewy and definitely with some ‘zing’ when accompanied with the mild saffron sauce. Too bad that there were only a few pieces of the scallop; would definitely not mind more of those. For our mains we ordered the Policha Meen and Poulet Rouge. Policha Meen is grilled sea bass marinated with green pepper, garlic and shallots, enveloped in banana leaves and served with tomato ‘rougail’, a recipe from the house of Mme Blance, the ‘Grand Dame’ of Pondicherry. While the grilled sea bass was, well, grilled fish, it was the Poulet Rouge that really stole the show. It doesn’t matter that the name makes it out to be more than a glorified butter chicken dish, and it didn’t matter that the chicken was in large chunks, because when you put that tender a chicken into that exquisite a sauce, you get what we could officially proclaim, the best butter chicken we’d ever had! Hands down! Creamy, smooth with just the right dash of heat, the Poulet Rouge is

divine, whether it be eaten with saffron rice or naan. To glam up our high-end Indian food adventure even more, we asked for Kulcha as our side orders. These are your typical naan breads but made much more interesting by the option of having it filled with either mango and coconut, onion and garlic, chlli and coriander, or three cheeses. We went with the three cheeses; blue mozzarella, blue cheese and cheddar. And just to make it even cheesier, we’re told they finish it off with a sprinkle of pasmesan. For desserts, we skipped India altogether and went straight to France. Madras coffee crème brûlée with caramelised banana and Chocolate and cinnamon fondant with vanilla ice cream. The crème brulee, with its coffee punch and sweet bananas, offered a pleasant and tasty end to your meal, despite it being a little harder than what you’d expect crème brûlées to be. Meanwhile, the cinnamon in the fondant slightly ruined the chocolate for us though those who like their chocolates spiced up will appreciate this a little bit more. Overall experience La Porte Des Indes is an odd one because you can’t quite figure out what they are trying to achieve theme-wise; a lounge with club music, live DJ and all, or a fine dining restaurant in the depths of the ocean? But look past the theme and the food is still fabulous, and the staff attentive to your needs, and that, at the end of the day, is what fine dining is all about.

Going Organic Old Dubai charm coupled with an inviting promise of total indulgence led us to give in to try the newest organic craze we’ve heard about: the Voya body treatments. Here’s our take on the indulging session.

V

oya is an organic seaweed beauty product manufacturer based on Ireland’s Atlantic coast that offers a host of facial and skincare options meant to provide total skin pampering. Getting late to Zen the Spa at Al Ghurair Rayhaan by Rotana would not be ideal since it allowed us no time to linger at the changing room. The front desk staff and therapist, although polite and helpful, made us feel we needed to rush. So, we did. Upon entering the serene, scented treatment room, we felt bit relaxed while doing the quick assessment and briefing about the Organic Peppermint and Seaweed Sugar Glow Scrub. Then, without further ado, we were asked to lie down on the bed, and the scrubbing began. Get ready for some hard treading all over the body, and stay put even if it felt sticky. The shower after the scrub showed us

86

how soft our skin felt, and how purified our body came to be. The treatment was refreshing, and the all-over exfoliating treatment awakened our skin and body. It featured a fabulously fragrant mix of organic peppermint leaf, seaweed and sugar all of which perform the double action of gently removing dead skin cells while introducing the uplifting effects of organic peppermint essential oil. At the end of the treatment, we indulged in the Softly Does It Body Moisturizer. The beautiful scent of the lotion, coupled with non-sticky feel, paved the way for an awesome closing. However, we believe that it would be better if the scrub were coupled with a full-on body massage. Nonetheless, we had an amazing time once again at Zen the Spa at Al Ghurair Rayhaan by Rotana. And, after the session, we spent some time at the relaxing area, sipping a cup of tea and nibbling slices of fruits. That was indeed a moment of blissful body and spirit satisfaction.

Talk about wellness Want to go for some ‘me’ time yet confused of what you exactly need? AW gets the answers from the expert.

“Relaxation is the initial driver why one would choose to go to the spa,” Sofitel’s So SPA Director of Development & Wellbeing Activities, Aldina Duarte Ramos, began to tell us. She furthered,“But other than that, there are perhaps other requirements that their body needs. And, each person’s needs are different.” Apparently, people who have been eyeing to get a massage would perhaps have to go through detox or foot therapy, or facial even. That’s why welcoming guests and probing questions are necessary in keeping awareness and recording the assessment of the body’s needs. That’s why in So Spa, they believe in providing customised treatments for their guests, as Aldina explained. Sofitel brings its celebrated personalised luxury approach to So SPA, offering guests the finest experience. Sofitel teams propose treatments to complement guests’ plans for the day, or for the remainder of their stay. Business traveller looking to unwind? A couple taking a voyage à deux and looking for some relaxing treatments? An individual looking to energize? Whatever the guest’s plans, So SPA is there. For a busy working woman, Aldina suggested that she may opt for two things: body scrub and facial. The body scrub is a soothing treatment for the whole body

that exfoliates dead skin, leaving a soft and silky feel. This treatment is also perfect in stimulating blood circulation, allowing the body to revive from its causes of stress. Follow it with facial, she said, because such treatment would permit one woman to completely transform how she feels about her looks, leaving her more confident with the radiant and freshness of her face. A monthly facial session would be good to maintain, according to Aldina. But personally, our expert on the hot seat would wish to go for a daily session of feet relaxation. The Therapeutic Foot Reflexogy is incredibly relaxing as it massages the reflex points on the feet that are actually connected to key organs in the body. To her, it would be indeed advisable to go for foot treatments regularly. Other than the personalised touch that guests get from So Spa at various Sofitel addresses around the globe, the goers would also find the refinement and skill of the latest in French cosmetology in their centers. Renowned for using luxurious French brands, So Spa also offer a wide range of poetic and surprising treatments that are linked to the local culture where the spa is located as well as in French gastronomy – in fact, the spa menu is actually classified according to Starters, Main and Desserts. In the Middle East, Sofitel The Palm

Dubai is the luxurious home of So Spa. The delightful heaven is 2,500sqm with 28 treatment rooms, a steam room and four outdoor cabanas with Tahitian-inspired spa treatments that include an exclusive hydro pool for two. Here, So Spa offers you a world of personalisation where you can enjoy the moment of elevation that will leave an impression on you long after. With its luxurious décor, intriguing and superlative offers ranging from rejuvenating massages and facials to slimming treatments and express sessions, So Spa has the ultimate reawakening experience for your body and soul. So Spa is also located at Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche which is the first property within the GCC to host Sofitel’s signature So Spa that features a full range of the latest equipment and facilities. A swimming pool and whirlpool on the terrace of the hotel complements the offering.“There are, plans of expansion here in the region including building one in Riyadh in 2015,”Aldina shared. “We are in the process of studying how the region would receive the partnership we have with actress and model Marisa Berenson, the So SPA muse,” she continued. “Given the success of our collaboration with Marisa Berenson in Europe, we think that women in the region would also benefit from those treatments.”

‘Contrast’ A new generation of photographers have come together to showcase the ‘Seen and Unseen’ attractions of the UAE with a focus on Ajman at The Ajman Palace. Aptly titled ‘Contrast’, it captures the heart of the ever-changing face of the emirates with a random mix of images ranging from street photography to landscapes, wilderness, portraits and architectural marvels.

The Turning Point’ exhibition showcases works by artists Afra bin Dhaher, Alia Lootah, Alina Amer, Ammar Al Attar, Anood Obaidly, Hind Mezaina, Jessica Mein, Layla Juma, Maitha Demithan, Mobius, Mark Pilkington, Mohamed Hussein, Mohammed Hindash, Vikram Divecha and Walid Al Wawi. “Turning Point draws on different media, shedding light on the practices and processes that may otherwise be confined to the studio, through a selection of works that are at once experimental, perhaps unplanned and accidental, but which reveal a conceptual rigor,” says Anabelle de Gersigny, Strategy and Partnership Development Manager at Tashkeel. The exhibition includes a selection of shortlisted works from the Middle East Emergent Artist Prize, which shares this year’s Turning Point theme. The prize is an initiative to support and nurture aspiring talents in the region, launched by Van Cleef & Arpels in collaboration with Tashkeel and in partnership with Design Days Dubai.

There are more than 60 photographs on display produced by 13 photographers, each vying for your attention, but you may find your mind constantly wandering – and wondering at the sheer range of it all. Some of the snaps are extremely intense and intellectually stimulating while others are just candid impressions. Emirati photographer Maitha bint Khalid uses photography to convey a message to the world. She focuses in her photographs on symbols that reflect the authenticity and heritage of the UAE in all its forms and the local environment. According to her, “Photography is a universal language that needs no

translation and it’s the best way to express her thoughts”. So how much of a role does technology play in photography today? Kevin J. Larkin, an American freelance photographer based in Dubai, said, “Technology is a necessary, but not a sufficient, condition for good photographs. Today, photography has been revolutionised by digital technology. However, although it has become much easier to take photographs that are technically flawless (in terms of exposure and focus), it is just as difficult to capture aesthetically satisfying images as it was in the age of film and chemicals”. Talking about her subjects, Katerina Smoldyreva, a Russian artist who lives and works in Dubai, said, “When I am photographing, I see life. I don’t have pictures in my head. I don’t worry about how the picture is going to look. I let that take care of itself. It is not about making a nice picture. That anyone can do. It is just capturing life as it happens”.

‘Contrats’ runs until April 16.
