STYLE EXPERT Q & A You asked. We answered! Our resident Style Expert, Dear Breck, I am a 5’6’’ woman of average build, except for my bust. My bra size is a 32 D. How can I draw attention away from my large chest without dressing in oversized clothes that will swallow up the rest of my body?
Angelina H. I can understand your frustration with this problem (that we’d all like to have)! But seriously, I have a few pointers to help you feel a lot more comfortable in your clothing. First, it’s very important for you to have a supportive bra, in which case, a professional fitting may be your best bet to make sure everything is fitting as it should. The support will help your breasts sit higher, thus bringing more emphasis to your waistline. Also, you may want to have a great tailor on standby. This way you can buy clothing to fit your bust and have the rest taken in, if needed. When buying clothes, make sure to look for pieces that show the definition of your waist versus baggy or oversized clothing. Knitted fabrics, wrap and V-neck tops, and dresses will work well to emphasize your curves, but not accentuate your bust as much. But take care to stay away from deep V-necks and tops that are cut too low. You can always opt for cowl, square and scoop necklines as alternatives as well. Another trick to try is emphasizing your lower half. Accentuate your legs by wearing colorful or printed bottoms while wearing a solid top or blouse. Avoid sleeves which stop at bust, tucking blouses, and stiff fabrics as they will only emphasis your bust. And lastly, don’t forget accessories such as scarves, belts (which sit at your waist), chunky bangles, and hats to draw the eye away from your chest. You have an awesome body and I hope these tips help you feel more comfortable.

Breck Smith, answers your questions about fashion. Dear Breck, I’ve recently graduated college and have accepted a job at an interior design firm. I’m excited for this new chapter of my life to begin, but also very nervous because I basically have to build my work wardrobe from scratch. Being that I’m in a creative field, I have a little more leeway as to dress code and I’d like to reflect my vibrant personality and eclectic taste. How can I express my creative side but still walk the line of office appropriateness?
Olivia S. Congratulations Olivia! I’m very excited for you and I’m happy to answer your question to help get you started in your new career. First, I think it’s very important for you to research the company you’ll be working with and how other employees dress there. It’s not a bad thing if you replicate what others are wearing (while adding your own twist) until you get a better feel for the dress code in your office. Next, you should always project a crisp, professional, and polished appearance without looking like a banker. Play around with lighter tones and try to avoid darker colors such as dark blue, gray and black. Building your wardrobe around a lighter color scheme will allow you to mix and match the tops and bottoms of suits to add a little flair to your ensembles.
I would also recommend expressing your creative flare through accessories. Take advantage of second hand and vintage stores where you can find quirky accessories to spice up the clothing you already own without spending a lot of money. You may run across some eclectic, creative pieces. Look for colorful scarves with design to add interest and make your outfits more versatile. Try to focus also on stylish shoes, purses and boots that have an artsy feel to them. Something like an edgy, leather jacket and printed traditional dress would pair well together. Just always remember my number one rule for office attire: no matter how casual the office, always, always, always, avoid flip flops and outrageous or overly done makeup. I Hope this helps and good luck to you!
Colorful accessories can take a suit from boring banker to artsy cool! Select one bold piece and keep the rest of your accessories simple.

FITNESS
As women, we tend to focus on certain body parts more than others. But a nice set of legs never goes unnoticed. Keep in mind that doing cardio may help you lose some weight, but if you’re looking to tighten up you need to build muscle. If you’re not quite there yet but looking to sculpt and tone your gams, try the following exercises:
Squats Plié squats, front squats, back squats, whatever you choose, squat! Here the plié squat is demonstrated. The key is to keep the legs wide and toes pointed outward. Hold a plate or dumbbell with both hands hanging between your legs while doing this exercise. Really focus on squeezing the glutes on the upward motion.
TIPS: Inhale when lowering body, exhaling when pushing back up. Keep toes pointed forward. Engage your abdominals. Do not use your hands to help you push back up. Don't allow your chest to drop and sink onto the tops of your thighs.
Step 1
Step 2
Lunges Side, stationary, walking, reverse, lunges are all around a great exercise. Lunges target your glutes, hamstrings and quads but also your calves and core. Experience a multitude of benefits from this exercise. Whatever form you choose, be sure to keep your knee aligned over your foot to ensure your knee and ankle are moving along the same line of motion.
TIPS: If you are a beginner, you may want to perform your lunges without weights until you achieve the proper technique. Place your hands on your hips or in the small of your back and perform your lunge.
9
Stiff-Leg Deadlifts While the quad muscle is the biggest one in the leg, don’t forget to work the hamstrings. In order to have a properly balanced legs (not only physiologically, but also appearance-wise), you need to work your hamstrings just as much as the other muscles in your legs. This exercise is great for the glutes as well. The main thing to focus on while doing these is keeping legs fairly straight with a slight bend and keeping your butt out. Performing stiff-leg deadlifts is very similar to the motion of touching your toes.
TIPS: Avoid straining your back by keeping your back at a slight angle.
Step 1
Step 2
Glute Bridges This exercise can be done with no weight or with a barbell. Either way, lie on your back on the floor with bent knees and flat feet. With hands to your sides, lift your hips as high as possible and squeeze the glutes at the top for a few seconds. Return to starting position and repeat.

GET ORGANIZED
How To: Organize Your Grocery List Have you ever gone to the grocery store with some items and meals in mind but when you get home, you find that you have only bought enough ingredients to make part of two recipes, but not enough ingredients to make one whole recipe? This system will help you avoid that in the future. This may seem like an unnecessary topic, but this organization tip will come in handy if you’re on a budget when grocery shopping. It will also help if you unexpectedly run out of time while shopping and don’t have enough time to finish buying everything on your list.

This method allows you to break down your grocery list into meals so that you know which ingredient belongs to which meal—at a glance. It is very simple. When you write out your list, assign each meal a color. You can use markers, highlighters, colored pencils—get creative! When thinking of the ingredients that each meal needs, write them in the corresponding color. This can also be done in Excel (yes, I type my grocery lists in Excel sometimes!). In Excel, the color of the text can be changed to match the recipe. When you come across an item needed in two separate recipes, you can write the word in pen, or in one color and indicate the number needed for each recipe in the color that corresponds with the recipe. When you come across an item needed in two separate recipes, you can write the word in pen, or in one color and indicate the number needed for each recipe in the color that corresponds with the recipe.
Example: Tomatoes are needed for 3 different recipes, so the numbers are written in 3 different colors.

Writing the total number in parenthesis after each ingredient will show you the total needed for each ingredient at a glance.
This method will take you a few extra seconds, but it is worth it! You can download this free Grocery List Printable here. Happy Shopping! By: Lifestyle blogger Angela Beatrice. LOVE...
5 Ways to Keep Your Love Burning Hot Experience has taught us that new relationships usually come with some fire. You know, that allconsuming heat that scorches you every time you touch your lover? But this fierce fire can fade away with time.
It’s all partner’s desire to keep their passion ignited and the love burning. Feeding the flame is the responsibility of both partners. Below are some tips to keep your relationship hot and heavy.
Mind the Ways You Communicate Communication is vital to every relationship. And with the continuing advancement of technology, there are a number of ways in which one can get in touch with one’s partner. This has made communication easier. Or has it? The impersonal aspects of texts and emails can take away from the romance of expression. Some of the ways to woo your partner are: 1. Write a love letter – Few things are more romantic than a handwritten note full of loving words. Not a gifted poet? That’s okay. Just let your partner know that how you feel and the small ways they add joy to your life. Do they give great back rubs? Or does their smile just light up your day? Write it down! Then slip it in their bag before they go to work. 2. Send a Naughty Text – While you’re at work, send your mate a sexy message describing all of the naughty things you’re going to do to them when they get home. This will build anticipation and make the moment you finally connect electric. 3. Post It - Stick a Post-It Note containing a loving message on the refrigerator or on the bathroom mirror.
Focus on Quality With work, careers, or even distance, sometimes couples don’t get much time together. Make the time you do have count by focusing on the quality of the time you spend together. Quality time with your partner fans the flame of love’s fire and keeps you both in tune with each other. It’s also a great time for you both to have a lot of fun. Try doing new activities such as rollerblading, tandem biking, or even taking a cook class together. If you’re a homebody, try having an indoor picnic. Set the scene just as you would an outdoor picnic with a basket full of goodies and a cozy blanket to lay on. Light candles and set your iPod to a special playlist full of romantic tunes.
13
Reinvent yourself You don’t have to change your entire look in order to reinvent yourself. But invest time and energy into your appearance and your hobbies. You may want to focus on breaking a bad habit or taking that spinning class you’ve always wanted to try. Or, yes, maybe you want to try that new hair color. Whatever it is that you choose, do it because you want to be a better you, not because you think it will please your partner. They fell for you as you are. But the more you invest in yourself, the happier you will be as a person and in your relationship. And changing things up now and then can inject new life into a predictable relationship.
Don’t Keep Your Hands to Yourself In the beginning of relationships, physical touch is at an all-time high. Your hormones are raging and the result is usually a lot of hot and heavy action. Keep that alive by making intentional physical contact with your partner. It doesn’t have to be sex. Take the time to give your partner loving embraces and passionate kisses. Greet him or her with a kiss and bid them farewell with the same. Something so small can make a huge difference in your relationship.
Keep flirting Almost all relationship started with flirting. Your eyes meet. He looks at you, you look away. You toss you hair. He tells you jokes, you laugh (whether they’re funny or not). This romantic tango just may have been the beginning of your relationship. Don’t let that be the end of it. Flirt with your partner regularly. When you’re in public, give your mate longing glances and your best “bedroom eyes”. Stroke his leg with your foot underneath the table. Be funny and humorous. Of course, everyone loves to be with someone who is fun to be with. There are so many ways to flirt. In the end, do your best to keep things exciting and new in your relationship. Don’t get complacent and think that once you make a commitment that you can slide into monotony. On the contrary, make every effort to make your mate feel special and desired and you’ll get it back twenty-fold.

Should I stay, or Should I Go? Our Love Expert, Rhiannon answers your questions about love and sex.
Dear Rhiannon, I'm 32 and have been dating a 33 year old guy for over 1 year. We spend a lot of time with each other and always have a great time. He says he has deep feelings for me and may be falling for me. I feel the same. The problem is that he says he's not ready to make the next step in our relationship: commitment. I feel like he’s just being lazy by not committing to me. I worry that I'm in a dead end relationship and that he'll never commit. Is there any hope of him making a commitment or am I just hanging on to something that will never be? -
Frustrated
Dear Frustrated, I have seen men get married after swearing that they would never do so. I have seen "players" commit to one woman happily. I can't tell you whether or not he is the one for you, but I can tell you that he has told you his truth, and that is what you have to go by. Right now, he isn't ready for a commitment. This means right now, but that could change. However, that is not the bigger problem. The bigger problem, and one that I see in most women, is that you are so focused on what he needs, that you are losing sight of what's important to you and what you need. You deserve to be in the kind of relationship that you desire. When you settle for less than what you truly want, you cut out that kind of relationship as a possibility. In other words by committing yourself to this, you could be missing out on something wonderful. This is not to say that you should dump him. Through this process you may decide that he is the one and he may realize that you are the one. The point is, you don't want to invest time and energy into just this one person if it isn't leading to the kind of relationship you truly desire. First, you need to get very clear on what it is that you want in a relationship. What kind of commitment do you want? Do you want marriage? Do you want children? Write a list of the 10 most important characteristics that you want in a relationship. Don't think about what kind of man you want. Think of what you want the relationship to feel like. Second, consider the possibility of dating other men while still seeing him. Dating does not need to be exclusive, especially in the beginning. If you would like, tell him that you've decided to date other men. You could say: "I know that you're not ready to commit right now. I care about you, I enjoy being with you. But, I know what I want in a relationship. I want _____________ and it doesn't seem like this is going in that direction. I've given it some thought and I'm going to date other people. I don't want to hurt your feelings, but I really want to meet the one." This isn't revenge or a ploy to get him to commit. And don't say it unless you truly are prepared to date other men.
15
One of two things are likely to happen. He will either tell you that he doesn't want you to see other people or he will tell you to go ahead and see other men. If he tells you that he doesn't want you to see other people, I want you to do something that may feel uncomfortable. I want you to stand your ground. Do not compromise on your standards. Tell him, "I want (insert commitment here) and I won't settle for anything less." The other reaction you may receive is him telling you to go ahead and see other men. This would probably be hurtful but once again, don’t give in or backtrack from your decision. Whatever his response, be prepared to move forward with your life. The point is that this isn’t about him. It's about you. This is your life and you are designing it with the decisions that you're making right now. Third, and most importantly, put your time and energy into yourself. Invest in your health, your career, your goals, your friends, your hobbies, your happiness and into preparing for the relationship that you desire by becoming the best partner that you can be. This way when it does show up, you'll be able to make it wonderful and keep it that way. Remember that you are always training other people how to treat you. If you know that you are highly valuable and worthy and you treat yourself kindly and with respect, others will do the same. Treat yourself the way that you would have others treat you. Take excellent care of yourself. Rhiannon

FASHION BLOGGERS
Our resident blogger, Arielle Parr is back to tell us how to transition to a cool weather wardrobe!
Autumn is right around the corner and now is the time to update your wardrobe! With only a few weeks of summer left to enjoy, the days will soon grow cooler and you don't want to “Fall behind on the trends. Before you start shopping for new clothes, a summer-to-fall closest change-over is necessary.
STEP 1
STEP 2
Raid your closet and pack away all things summer. This is also the perfect time to purge old clothes that have been collecting dust. If you haven't worn it in a year, get rid of it! Don't try it on, don't think twice, just toss it in a bag and drop it off at the nearest thrift store.
Now that you have space in your closet for new fabulous fall fashion, the next step is to create a shopping list. If you're on a budget, this is the best way to stay on target and spend wisely. First, list the must-have pieces that you will need such as sweaters, scarves, leggings and boots. These are the items to focus on buying first. Then list items you want to splurge on, such as that irresistible leather skirt or those funky platform heels. If you're behind on the latest trends get inspiration from your favorite blogs and magazines.
TIP Try arranging the clothes in your closet first by type (tops, skirts, pants, etc), then by color.
17
STEP 3
STEP 4
Now that the hard work is out of the way, it's time to have fun and shop! Transitioning to the next season can be costly, but there are a few ways to cut corners and save money. You can find basics such as scarves, sweaters and denim in thrift stores for a fraction of the amount you would spend in an expensive department store. Also, when shopping in thrift stores you are more likely you find unique, one-of-kind pieces. Ross, TJ Max and Marshall’s are also great stores with massive discounts on the latest trends.
Fall is all about layers so rack up on pieces that are easy to mix and match such as collared shirts and thin cashmere sweaters. You can create endless different looks with these wardrobe staples. Personally, I love vintage style so I created this 90s grunge inspired look. It's super simple, comfy, yet stylish. Even though the temperature will be cooling down, you can still look hot!

Face Mapping Your skin can say a lot about your health, especially about your face. It’s viewed as the mirror to our health. Can you tell I have a mild fascination with non-traditional alternative medicine? Today, I want to talk about face mapping. This practice, falls under the umbrella of ancient traditional Chinese medicine (TCM.) TCM is based mainly on the prevention of illness and uses herbs, acupuncture, acupressure, massage, exercise, and diet to promote good health. It especially emphasizes changing lifestyle habits. The key to understanding Chinese medicine is to understand the idea of balance. It seems that since I have become a woman of a certain age with constant hormonal changes, I now experience bouts of acne. I haven’t been interested in taking the hormone replacement therapies (HCT), so I have found relief from hot flashes, adult acne and losing my hair from natural sources. Since this is focusing on acne, I will keep the discussion to that of my face. So back to the face mapping that I mentioned earlier. Face Mapping What shows up on your face is directly or indirectly connected to the state of your internal organs and systems, making our skin one of the greatest mirrors to inner imbalances. Face Mapping is the chances diagnostic tool that has been used in China and India and is a great way to determine where skin symptoms (pimple, rash, redness, hyper pigmentation, sallowness, darkness or wrinkle) connects deeper in the body. This helps determine the cause of one’s skin care woes. Zone: 1 & 2: Digestive System – Avoid processed foods and opt for fresher, natural alternatives. Eat slower and chew food well and increase your fiber intake. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water as well. Zone 3: Liver – Reduce alcohol, greasy food and dairy intake which all put a strain on the liver. This is the zone where food allergies might show up. Again, drink
19
plenty of water to cleanse the system and get plenty of sleep, your liver needs rest too. Zone 4 & 5: Kidneys – Anything around the eyes (including dark circles) point to dehydration. Drink up! Zone 6: Heart – This can indicate high blood pressure and Vitamin B deficiency so get your blood pressure checked and consider a vitamin supplement. Try to avoid too much spicy food and cut down on meat intake. Look into ways to lower cholesterol, like replacing “bad fats” with “good fats” such as Omega 3 and 6 found in nuts, avocados, fish, and flax seed and finally get some fresh air. Zone 7 & 8: Kidneys – Again, drink up! And cut down on soft drinks, coffee and alcohol as these cause further dehydration. Zone 9 & 10: Respiratory system – Do you smoke? Have allergies? Or are you suffering from a bronchial cold or asthma? This area is affected by the lungs. Keep your body cool and don’t let it overheat, eat more cooling food and get more fresh air. Avoiding foods that make the body acidic (meat, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, sugar) and add more alkalizing foods like green veggies. Zone 11 & 12: Hormones – This is the zone for stress and hormonal changes. And while both are sometimes unavoidable, you can decrease their effect by getting adequate sleep, drinking enough water, eating leafy veggies and keeping skin scrupulously clean. Another interesting point: breakouts in this zone indicate when you are ovulating (and on which side). Zone 13: Stomach – Step up the fiber intake, reduce the toxin overload and drink herbal teas to help with digestion. Zone 14: (not shown, zone 14 is the neck area) Breakouts here can be a sign that your body is fighting bacteria to avoid illness. Rest and recuperate. Eat well, drink plenty of water, find ways to relax and get plenty of sleep. Allow your body to fight back by treating it well. So the next time you break out or notice puffiness, dryness or dark undereye circles, look to your face map: your skin is probably trying to communicate on behalf of the internal organs. However, do remember that as with all medical issues, it is always best to see your doctor for proper diagnosis.
This is just a general guide to point you in the right investigative direction – just because you break out between the brows doesn’t necessarily mean you have a bad liver. Perhaps you don’t get breakouts or breakouts only during that certain time of the month. However, I hope you find this information about Face Mapping not only interesting, but helpful.

Emotional Wellness Depression. You wake up in the morning and wonder how to put one foot in front of the other. You try to do the things you once enjoyed, but now they seem empty. You find your self pulling away from family and friends. Is it the blues, or depression? Women are affected with depression at double the rate of men, however, it is an equal opportunist within the female population; impacting all races and ethnicities equally. But why do women experience depression in such higher rates than men? Many factors attribute to this, including biological, genetic, psychological and social considerations. What's more, it is thought that woman are more likely to report depression, than men. With such a prevalent disorder, one would think it would be a popular topic of discussion. But sadly, a negative stigma remains about depression and the types of people who suffer from it. In fact, 80% of those reporting depression, do not seek treatment.
Are You Ready For Help? Where to Begin. The most effective method of controlling depression is with a combination of antidepressants and counseling. But where to begin? Your Primary Care Physician (PCP) is the best first step. He or she will normally run blood work first to determine if there are any medical conditions that may be causing your depression, such as a hormone imbalance, or an endocrine disorder. If a medical condition is the cause of your depression, antidepressants may not be needed. If no medical condition is found, you may choose to try antidepressants alone. Many times your PCP will be happy to manage this treatment. If counseling is declined, there are activities you can do at home to increase control of the depressive symptoms (see below). Keep in mind that antidepressants must be titrated both up and down. They cannot be discontinued without a MD or Pharmacist instructing you how to slowly reduce the dose before quitting completely. For this same reason, it normally takes up to 3 weeks to feel the full effect of the medication. counseling can greatly improve your immediate symptoms, during this time. Also, while on any antidepressant, during the first couple weeks of
21
treatment, you could actually have an increase in suicidal thoughts, while your neurotransmitters are in the process of balancing. It can also compound the feelings of hopelessness if the person is unaware of the time needed to feel improvement on the medication. Bottom line, give it time to work.
Which Medication Is Right For You? While there are several types of antidepressants, the most popular are SSRIs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, and Welbutrin, to name just a few. These antidepressants work by controlling serotonin levels, thought to be responsible for mood, among other things. With the advent of SSRIs, some less therapeutic classes of antidepressants either fell out of use, or found off label uses. In the 1990s, the SSNRIs, or selective serotoninnorepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, hit the market with Effexor. Since then, Cymbalta, Prestiq, and Savella have become quite popular, not only for their effective treatment of depression, but also for the ability of some SSNRIs to control pain. Cymbalta has been prescribed for neuropathic and chronic pain. While Savella is a first line treatment for fibromyalgia. SSNRIs are thought to be more effective in controlling depression by increasing the activity of both serotonin and norepinephrine at the synapses. Norepinephrine is both a hormone and a neurotransmitter, while serotonin works as a neurotransmitter, alone.
Next Steps - What To Expect If you feel you would benefit from counseling, alone or in conjunction with medications, you can request a referral for counseling. Frequently, these groups are made up of Psychiatrists (to write and manage prescriptions), Psychologists, Nurse Counselors, and
Social Work Counselors. Many times, your first appointment will be with the Psychiatrist for a medical assessment of the need for an antidepressant, then you will meet your therapist. During subsequent appointments, you will see your therapist on a regular basis and the Psychiatrist, less frequently, for follow ups and maintenance of your medications. If you don't feel comfortable with counseling (but really, who doesn't enjoy talking to a complete stranger about themselves for 60 minutes) there are some activities you can do on your own to help control the symptoms of depression. Bear in mind that depression is a serious condition and should be reported to some health care professional. During depression, your thinking can be greatly impaired and both poor judgment and decision making can be overwhelming. Many times, you need a professional and impartial party to review your symptoms and suggest a treatment plan.
Most Common Symptoms of Depression 1. Change in eating and sleeping habits 2. Feelings of guilt 3. Feeling like you are in slow motion, with fatigue 4. Finding little pleasure in the things you once enjoyed 5. Feeling hopeless, helpless, and pessimistic about the future
Activities To Help Alleviate Depression 1. Journaling 2. Guided imagery 3. Relaxation techniques 4. Deep breathing
What Not To Do There are many affected with depression who, in desperation, turn to alcohol or recreational drugs to help cope with their symptoms. Remember, alcohol and most recreational drugs, are depressants and will, over time, increase your symptoms and contribute to sleep disturbances, which further aggravates depressive symptoms. People may think it's helping, but it can be just another sign of depression.
As with any medical condition, all symptoms should be reported to a medical professional and you should not make any changes to your routine without notifying your physician. This article is not intended to replace a professional healthcare plan; it is not intended to act as a plan of care, but to educate the reader, only.
Managing your depression starts with embracing self-love and being kind to yourself. The first step in feeling better is to recognize you are important enough for treatment and you deserve to feel better, because you do.

The cool breezes and colorful leaves of Autumn are right around the corner. We're going to share a makeup tutorial perfect for all skin tones and inspired by the warm and golden tones of fall. By: Onlinedrea 1. Have a Good Base: Start with a clean face. Use cleansers and moisturizers that are good for your skin type, whether you have oily, combination, or dry skin. SPF is your friend. Even darker skin tones are not immune to damage from the sun.
2. Concealer & Foundation: Conceal any dark spots or blemishes, then lightly add a powdered foundation on top. You're going more for an air brushed look than a caked on look.
3. Eyes: Make your eyes really stand out by using a golden tone eyeshadow. Then, line your eyes with a dark brown or black liner. Finish off with your favorite mascara to frame the eyes.
4. Lips: Line your lips with a darker shade of lip liner. Then add a nude or golden tone lipstick on top. This will great depth and allure to your lips giving them an enticing shape.
5. Highlight: Use highlighter on the tops of your cheek bones, bridge of your nose, and your cupid's bow to highlight your features.
6. Have fun: Add a pretty pink blush or deep blue eye shadow. Putting on makeup is an expression of you. Do what feels right. Try new things, and love the results! 1. FOOD FOR THOUGHT
by: Marianne Bloudoff, RD
With Fall right around the corner, it’s a good idea to start preparing for those cool nights. And chowing down on fresh out of the oven goodness tops my list of favorite things this season. Follow my step-by-step instructions and soon you’ll be a GIT Girl in the kitchen. Easy Fish Tacos with Pineapple Salsa serves 4 Forget the battered and deep fried fish tacos at your favorite restaurant, and make your own! Flavorful, economical, healthy, and delicious, they are simple enough to whip up even on a busy weeknight. It’s a fun family meal that will make you think of summer and the beach. Easy Fish Tacos Ingredients 1 lb firm white fish fillets such as cod, or halibut, cubed 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp seafood seasoning blend (like Old Bay) 8 whole wheat flour tortillas (6-7” diameter) Homemade Guacamole (recipe follows)
Pineapple Salsa (recipe follows) shredded cabbage feta cheese lime wedges 1. In a bowl, combine fish, olive oil, and seasoning blend. 2. Heat a frying pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Add fish, and brown on one side approximately 2 minutes. Flip over, and cook another 2 minutes. Remove from heat. 3. Serve tortillas, fish, and all of the toppings family style and let everyone assemble their own. Enjoy! Homemade Guacamole Ingredients 1 ripe avocado 1/4 small red onion, diced 1 small Roma tomato, deseeded and chopped juice of 1/2 lime salt, pepper, garlic powder to taste pinch of cayenne pepper (optional) 1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl, and mash until almost smooth – a few chunks are okay! Adjust seasoning to taste. Pineapple Salsa Ingredients 1 cup fresh pineapple, chopped 1/4 small red onion, diced 1 fresh jalapeno, deseeded/deveined and diced juice of 1/2 lime pinch of salt 1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix. Make ahead to allow the flavors to meld. Note: Instead of shredding your own cabbage, just buy a bag of coleslaw mix. It tastes just as good, is inexpensive, and saves prep time.

We’ve Got It In the Bag!
By: Kimberly Morris
Yep, I’m that girl. The one with the trendy pants and stylish blouse; wearing shoes that step in the room way before my body and earrings to die for do. And of course makeup painted on by the gods. However, there is a single strand of my tapestry that stands out - my purse. Handbag, tote, bag, clutch, whatever you want to call it, my purse is my nemesis. Not because I don’t have an abundance of selections to choose from. There’s a gorgeous, rich orange straw shoulder bag with fringe for days hanging from the closet doorknob. And a leather, brown box bag with Aztec designs on the front planted on the dresser. If you take a stroll into the spare bedroom, you’ll find bags and boxes with colorful hues of green, yellow, red and blue in pockets of the room. Nope. The problem is simple: switching purses is a task that starts okay but turns into a chore. Upon inspection of the contents, I’d much rather walk the mile of purse shame than to tackle the dungeon of eternal “can’t find what I need”. You know, “I had a pen in here and now I can’t find it”. “Where is that receipt? I just had it and now I can’t find it”. “Are you kidding? I hear the phone, but can’t find it” Yeah, that! Are you that girl too? Better yet, what’s in your purse? Take inventory. You may be surprised.

Fall is coming. But transitioning into cooler weather doesn’t mean you can let your summer mani/pedi go. This fall’s styles feature cute cut-out booties and even some open toe looks. Don’t have the cash to keep your tootsies looking glam all year round? No problem! Kim is here to teach us the steps of her amazing at-home mani/pedi. Try it out, and enjoy having beautiful fingers and toes all Autumn long. The basic tools you need are nail polish remover, cotton balls, nail clippers, emery boards, callus remover, orange stick, cuticle trimmer, buffer, a quality base coat, a color of your choice, and a top coat (you can use a nail polish that does double duty as a base coat and top coat.) 1. When doing your own manicure and pedicure, it is important to start with your feet, especially if you have to use nail polish remover. First you should use nail polish remover and cotton pads to remove previous nail color. 2. Soak your feet in warm water. This will make exfoliating and trimming your toe nails easier. 3. Clip your toe nails and use the emery board to smooth and shape your toenails. (Tip: File nails in one direction to keep your nails healthy.) 4. Use the callus remover to easily remove dead and dry skin. Once you have used the callus remover you can allow your feet to continue to soak. 5. Taking one foot at a time, apply cuticle remover directly on your toes. Then, use the orange stick to gently push back cuticles. Use a cuticle trimmer to remove dry or dead skin on the cuticles. After caring for your cuticles you can remove your feet from the water, dry, your feet, and add toe spacers. 6. Add one layer of clear base coat. (Tip: You always want to use a base coat before adding your color. The base coat nail polish strengthens your nail, and prevents the polish from staining it.)
37
7. Add two coats of the color polish of your choice and allow to dry for two minutes.
8. Add a top coat, allow to dry, remove toe spacers, and move on to your manicure following these same steps. Viola! Now that you have mastered your DIY pedicure, your manicure will be a breeze. You have just completed a professional manicure and pedicure that should last you 5 to 7 days. Plus, you kept around $70.00 in your pocket. Pretty and smart! Tips for your manicure: You should only soak your nails for a brief amount of time. Soaking your hands for too long may weaken your nails. When trimming your cuticles, take extra care to cut away only dead skin. Damaging healthy skin can result in pain and infection. When washing your hands, use an exfoliating scrub to get your hands super soft. If you are a diabetic, always consult with your physician/podiatrist about what steps to take for foot care.
4 DIY Manicurists We Love! NEW LINE ALERT This new line from Sinful Colors Professional is part of the Declare Your Style campaign. It features an innovative nail color technology. Apply 2 coats and the color will dry to a silk (mate) finish. To achieve the satin (shiny) look, simply add a clear topcoat. You’ll love these 6 beautiful colors! Welcome To the Artistic World Of: Graphic art photo editor and Photographer
Renee Foster The best way to describe Renee Foster is pretty much summed up in her Instagram name; @THIS_COOL_CHICK_ She is one very cool chick with a big heart. She is an amazing graphic art photo editor and is unapologetic with her edgy and sensual style. She was an art teacher and frequently volunteers her time to help artistic causes. She is fun, playful, and completely vivacious! Her art and talent is incredible! Talking with her was as much fun as it was informative, and insightful. Julie C. Andrews: Hello Renee thanks for being here! In this column I try to help our readers find ways in which they can bring more art and creativity into their lives in various ways. With self-portrait art a big part of our culture today, I wanted to talk with about your graphic art self-portraits and get some advice for our readers. Renee Foster: It’s a pleasure! I am thrilled to be a part of this month’s G.I.T. Girl magazine. JCA: I am wondering about your unique perspective in regards to your gritty and creative photography art. One of the things you are known for is the sensual and edgy, yet classy, graphic art self-portrait. When did you first have the inspiration to create these artistic images of yourself? RF: When I was younger I was a model. I would get to wear the most amazing couture dresses. They were amazing! When I wore them, I felt so strong and powerful. I felt confident. I loved the feeling it gave me. I try to recapture some of those feelings of confidence and strength in my art.
through your art, different sides of your personality? RF: Yes, I often do. I use my self-portraits to try to show and express different parts of myself. I like to bring to my photos something sexy, but also vulnerable. Powerful and strong, but also thought provoking. I do have a sensual aspect to my photos, but it is not sexy for the sake of being sexy. My edits are about art, creativity, emotion, and playfulness. And sometimes it’s pure imagination. JCA: When you set up a shoot, do you already have an idea in mind of what you want to create? Or do you let the surroundings and moment inspire you? RF: Most of the time I already have an idea of what it is I want to create. Sometimes I will see an item and it will inspire a concept and it will develop from there. I was recently in Miami, Florida, and I came across this large brimmed, gorgeous, white hat. It was so glamorous; I based the entire shoot around that hat! It’s all about finding things that inspire creativity in you. JCA: Let me ask you this; as women we often have insecurities we hide and wage war with inside ourselves. Even the most seemingly beautiful of us have them. Are there any insecurities about yourself that influence your self-portraits and art?
JCA: That is very interesting to learn this, because one of the things that definitely comes across in your artistic photos is the strength. They have a wonderful mix of aspects; edgy, but soft, playful, yet sensual. RF: Yes, absolutely! I find that as each Almost like seeing various sides of a birthday passes I get more insecure about personality. Is this what you personify aging. With graphic photo editing, I can edit

myself to be anywhere, any time, and any style. I can take away flaws; I can erase the little things that bother me. However, I do not change my facial features or my body. For me, that is important. I might make my skin look like porcelain, or add features like wings or such; but I will not alter my face or body. I create artistic photos; I do not present them as true versions of myself. Sometimes, someone will say “You are perfect!” and I always tell them “No, I am not perfect. I have flaws. I am just a very good artistic editor”. JCA: I’m curious, have you found that these self-portraits have helped you overcome some parts the insecurities? RF: Yes, it does help. I take my insecurities and I change them into art. I can look at my art, see the creativity and beauty of it, and be proud of it. It’s very therapeutic to me. It also helps because I will send raw unedited photos of myself to other artists to edit. I have to let myself be vulnerable and step outside my comfort zone to send them these shots. And that is a good thing ultimately, because it challenges me to face the insecurities. JCA: Your editing skills are fantastic! What is a good way for people to learn the art of graphic photo edits? There is a lot of software and apps out there; can you recommend some you feel are good for beginners? RF: Thank you! I have to tell you, I am self-taught! The best thing to do is to practice, practice, practice! Play and have fun with it at first. Learn the software, and for your first few edits don’t worry about showing it to people, just experiment and try everything out. The apps I would recommend are ones that are easy to use and have great editing options like;
SuperImpose (iphone). This app allows you to edit yourself out and place you in many different types of settings. It is one of my favorites! (Android users try Background Eraser). PaintFX (iphone) This app I like because it has many awesome effects and is easy to use. (Android users try Color Touch Effects) BeFunky ( iphone and Android) This app has a lot of filters that are fantastic!
42
JCA: Renee, what would be your advice to people who want to be brave and take more uniquely creative Self-portrait art? What would you say to the person who wants to break out of their shell, but is unsure of their abilities to create this type of art? RF: First, take a moment and think about what it is they want to express or create. Create the vision in your head first; then go about bringing it to life step by step. It is also very important to learn your angles. I recommend taking practice shots of yourself and tilt your head in angles, see which ones flatter you more. With body shot angles, ask a trusted friend or family member to take shots of you and have them raise and lower the camera to get different perspectives. Again, find the angle that works best for your body type. And to all the people who feel they are not beautiful; it is not about making yourself fit into society’s definition of beauty. It is about creating an artistic vision of yourself and expressing it. When it comes to art, the word “beauty” means different things to different people. Find something you like about yourself and focus on that feature at first. Don’t try to fit into the box of what is considered ‘beautiful’; unique, different, and interesting are far more amazing.

College Edition
It’s time to go back to school. If you’re like me, you are dealing with a number of different emotions and thoughts. Excitement? Nervousness? Nausea? Don’t let your finances be the cause of stress this coming year.
Save now, Splurge Later This is the time in one’s life when you are investing in your future. And that investment can be quite expensive. As a transfer student to Colorado State University, I’ve experienced the costs associated with University life. Additionally, college is the type of place you constantly need supplies, need to do last minute shopping, or just want to go out with friends. What is a money savvy person to do if you want to spend, yet save for a little for later? The following 8 budget tips have helped me save a few dollars while still taking care of my needs/want list.
1. Create a Personalized Budget Sheet I purposely put this as the number one budget tip. It is so much easier to budget as a college student if you already have planned out your expenses. For example, by simply using an online search engine, you can find a pre-made budget template. I love using my Excel budget sheet because it is well organized. Tip: Create a separate budget sheet for each paycheck/allowance.
2. Set Some Budget Goals I really advocate “setting budget goals” because you won’t regret it. For example, we all want to purchase things that are essential but also stylish. However, you may need to keep in mind the expensive supplies you will need for your mid-term project that is coming up in a few weeks. Defining your priorities means making needs first and wants second.
3. Get an On-Campus Job I made this one specifically about on-campus jobs because of their flexibility. As a college student, you might want to focus primarily on studies, and having the time of your life. But for some, working a job around your class schedule can provide much needed extra money in our pockets. I recommend working an on-campus job because I have found they are more understanding about academic related reasons why one is late or may need to change your hours.
4. “Stay In” Dates College is a place that can make you feel pressured to date and find a significant other. Instead of always going out with your sweetie, Find fun things to do that are free that you can enjoy at his place or yours. Alternatives like a cuddle session or cooking for each other, rather than going out, can allow you to save some needed cash. Additionally, while you are privately bonding, take the time to have a private study session or two?
47
5. Don’t Bring What You Can’t Afford to Spend Let’s be honest, we all know college is notorious for partying. Additionally, we may range from the “hard-core party starter” to the “mild socially accepted wallflower.” What every your style is, have fun but I advise taking cash only. For example, leave you credit and debit cards at home, if possible, and only take a set amount that works for your budget. You can’t spend what you don’t have.
6. Make a Savings Pledge and Stick to It My savings pledge is to put back at least $10 to $20 per check in savings. A “savings range” such as that allows you some wiggle room per check/allowance. Can you think of something you would like to save up for? I highly suggest putting money aside for the future. College life can throw us curve-balls. Protect yourself and start saving now.
7. Bargain Shopping I love a great sale. My favorite app right now is Polyvore because I get turned on to great new trends and sales in the US and all over the world. Don’t be afraid to pass up that really expensive item today that may go on sale next week. Another great way to save while in college is to buy things out of season. I like to stock up on wardrobe staples while they are discounted in the off season. We need to buy things, but we should hold ourselves accountable for staying within our budget.
8. Reward Yourself Perhaps I saved the best for last. It is healthy to have a reward system in place for achieving your goals. As I’ve mentioned throughout this article, create and stay accountable to a budget. An option is set a timeframe of about three pay periods/allowances. If you successfully stay within your budget, plan to splurge on that designer bag you have been eyeballing. Or plan a special date or outing. As a college student, I want this to be the best years of my life. Budgeting helps me to utilize my funds in the best possible way. Making my money work in my favor, rather than boring a hole in my pocket, definitely takes some stress off from the rigors of college life. Remember, we all come from different backgrounds, so a personalized budget allows you to have a great time within your means. COVER STORY
Meet the triple crown pageant winner who’s work with sexual abuse survivors just may change the word - one girl at a time.
I am a survivor of incest. It began when I was 14 years old and did not end until I left home at the age of 16. The man who abused me was at least 30 years older than me and he was a called a “man of God” because he was a pastor. To this day, he still pastors a church. I lived with feelings of shame for several years. I never enjoyed the sexual experience with the pastor. Every sexual encounter that occurred was physically painful. I was groomed by the pastor, however. I used to feel like I was at fault. He drew me by quickly defending me whenever I was in trouble at home, making me feel as if he was on “my side”. He lured me with gifts, which I gladly accepted from him: shoes, clothes, jewelry and food. The actual molestation began shortly after I began accepting the gifts. I felt guilty for pretending to be asleep while the 250+ pound, 40+ year old man hovered over me and molested my body. Laying there, knowing that what was happening was wrong, I felt that there was nothing I could do. Who was I supposed to cry out to? I felt alone.
During the abuse, he would tell me that when I turned 18 he would marry me. He used the technique of “divide and conquer” by turning those that I was close to and I against each other. It almost became a competition of who could get the most attention out of the pedophile.
Coming Clean My father had a bad temper - of course, I was not going to tell him (or anyone else for that matter) the true reason I wanted to leave home. While the reasons I gave were honest, it obviously was not the biggest reason. I did not confess to my dad until two years later, while watching a Lifetime movie. At some point in the movie, there was a rape scene. I began to cry uncontrollably. When I calmed down, my dad, while staring at me intently, asked what was wrong. I tried to downplay my feelings and simply respond with how sad the movie was and how I could not believe a man could do that to a woman. When I realized it was too late to hide behind my tears, I finally told the truth.
After my dad contacted the authorities and after interviews were conducted about my allegations, the authorities returned to my dad’s home and told us that all allegations were denied. I was shocked! Possibly because of my youth and being naïve, I believed in my heart that the “man of God” would tell the truth, just because he was a pastor. Not so. After I finally released such a heavy burden of hiding behind this life-changing secret, my dad and grandmother, the late Louise Tisdal, believed and supported me. I am now receiving support from my mother and my sisters. Victims and survivors of this inexcusable crime can understand the deep gratitude that is felt towards those who believe. For this, I feel forever grateful to my family and strongly feel this is one of the reasons why I have successfully survived the abuse.
Falling to Pieces My self-esteem was awfully low as a teen and transitioning into my adult years. I felt that I was ugly and worthless, the very reason why an older man would find me attractive and not the young men who were my age. I would sit in my bedroom as a teen and listen to music and write poetry and letters to friends because I liked being secluded. However, while doing so, I never sat on the bed, but rather on the floor or at my desk. The bed just was not a location that I viewed as safe. I tried to pick up the pieces of my life and leave the past behind me. I thought it was that simple. I started college right after graduating from high school and felt this would be a new found freedom and beginning for me. However, anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts ruled my life. I was always nervous about not completing my course work and I was constantly suspicious of the male students and teachers on campus. I continued to struggle with the fact that I was only believed by my dad and grandmother.

I became so overwhelmed with doing well in college that my relationships with men, friends and those that I should have been close to became poor. Being overwhelmed turned into a suicide attempt during the spring semester of my freshman year. I put on my favorite dress and closed and locked my dorm door. I was ready to die. I came to in a hospital where my roommate and another college friend were sitting with me. They made me laugh and tried to encourage me that everything would be fine. My stomach was pumped after I consumed over 100 pain relievers. I shared a few laughs with my worried friends and I still had doubts; I continued to think I did not deserve or no longer wanted to be on earth. A doctor came in hours later with paperwork and explained to me and my friends that I would not be permitted to leave unless I agreed to not attempt suicide again. Listening to the pleas of my friends to tell the doctor what he wanted to hear, I agreed, but still kept the dark thought in the back of mind that I would, indeed, try again.
Healing & Moving Forward While this catastrophe detrimentally affected my life, I have successfully survived and overcome the sexual abuse. I began to heal after forming a closer relationship with God and joining an outstanding church in North Carolina. After pleading with the college housing department, I spent several holidays and school breaks on the campus—sometimes completely alone. I stayed two summers consecutively in a large dorm building by myself. I later gained friends who would allow me spend holidays and weekends with them. Currently, I am still disheartened by the fact that the man who abused me is still a pastor of a church, is around children and is still misleading many families. I feel badly for all of the parents and children who are being deceived by this man. I am now passionate about several things: Education being just, maintaining a healthy spiritual lifestyle, and building strong
communities through family, women and youth empowerment. I am most passionate about minimizing and eradicating sexual abuse and domestic violence. I had to change my mindset, the way I saw myself, in order to pursue these passions. I had to believe that I was a change maker—not a change observer. I had to gain strength from the pain of my past to rise up and even speak out or against many of my passions, as some of the topics are taboo. I had no idea of the “power” I possessed until I actually used it. It all began with the moderator of the Mrs. Christian International 2008 pageant who asked me a very important question onstage during my interview: “What’s the biggest obstacle you have ever had to overcome?” For the first time in my life, I told a public audience very plainly, without emotion and full of hope that something great would happen, that I was sexually abused in my youth. The challenges I faced in advocating against abuse and violence were upsetting my family and constantly hearing others say that I still needed to heal because I was “talking about abuse too much”. Also, when I began participating in pageants as another means to shed light on the issue of sexual abuse and domestic violence, I had friends who constantly advised that I change my platform to be something easier to discuss with judges. I was told that it would be hard for me to win with this topic of discuss at the forefront. Finally, after beginning my mentoring program, Queendom T.E.A. (The Etiquette Academy), it was hard finding financial support, especially without a 501(c) 3. I have also been challenged on why I only work with girls… it was simple: I am a woman who understands girls because I was once one. I also find that many girls see me as a role model or look up to me which allowed the door to be opened wider for them to hear my message. I feared that because of the road I chose to take in being an advocate that I

would be ostracized; I thought that some of my family would not speak to me again as a result of sharing “private” information. I also feared not fully knowing or understanding if I was truly healed from my past pain. I feared having to end Queendom T.E.A. due to a lack of support and funding. I handled this by just continuing the work I was doing. I did not stop advocating and I relentlessly asked (and still do) for financial support to continue mentoring the youth in my program. I also believed that if this was truly my life’s purpose that God would make a way. Since 2008, I have worked tirelessly to help victims of abuse in various forms, especially through our girls. Since beginning pageantry and Queendom T.E.A. in 2008, I singlehandedly have been able to mentor and empower over 400 girls in the United States and abroad. I also have encouraged and empowered many adults. I see no end in sight to this work. So how long you ask? Beginning in 2008 and continuing for the rest of my life. Do not expect your passion to become everyone else’s passion. When we work hard at any task, it is simple for us to see its importance, its necessity. Even when we passionately share our vision, dreams, tasks and goals with others, we can still get blank stares, nonchalant attitudes and condescending remarks. Does that detract from its importance? Absolutely not. We must continue the work for the audience that awaits our insight, encouragement and call to the tasks. To continue my healing process daily, I engage in prayer, morning walks, reading or creating my own positive affirmations and enjoying a nice cup of Organo Gold Café Mocha coffee. I also find it peaceful to write poetry, draw pictures and/or just escape inside of a good book. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” I am. Many have asked me whether or not I have had formal counseling; the answer is
55
“No”. I have to admit, my healing process has been different from the norm. I began writing poetry and drawing in my youth. In college, I formed a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. Presently, I use my relationship with God to help with advocating against all of the hurt I experienced in my past. I find pleasure in uniting with other survivors, encouraging them to seek their own happiness and even watching some grow into the success they were destined to be. I anxiously share my story of survival, statistics and warning signs to teens, parents, law enforcement and department of social services employees as they look at me with horror in their eyes. But, how do I feel? I feel proficient in my knowledge of sexual abuse and domestic violence. I feel savvy in the creative way I have been able to present this information to so many. Now I stand, as a strong and successful survivor, believing in the words of my God: “…My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” (II Corinthians 9-10)
