PORTFOLIO

I am a dedicated, hardworking and passionate headspace traveller interested in every aspect of design. During the years since I started my bachelorʼs at the Delft University of Technology Iʼve developed a keen interest for designing the world of things we cannot see: the world of interactions. I am a perfectionist but above all an optimist. I believe in the power that lies in empowering users and the good they can do with this in creating a better world. In my MSc Design for Interaction Iʼve developed a liking for creating meaningful solutions that have a lasting impact on the way people interact with eachother and with their environments. I believe painter Raoul Dufy captured designing for these goals perfectly for me in the following quote.

ABOUT M E In 2016 I graduated from the BSc Industrial Design Engineering in Delft. Currently following the MSc programme Design for Interaction, I create User Centered, Context-aware, and Effect-Driven solutions. By creating meaningful products this can also be called Design for Impact.

LEISURE Product design and engineering have drawn my interest ever since I could draw. I used to doodle like a madman, so the connection with design was obvious. I am a lifelong saxophone player and love traveling. I particularly enjoy doing new things to always encourage myself to step out of my comfort zone.

RAOUL DUFY WHAT INTERESTS ME, THE HARDEST PART, IS WHAT IS AROUND THESE OBJECTS. HOW DO YOU MAKE THE WHOLE THING HANG TOGETHER?

INTERNSHIP UPREACH - MP HEPP S U RI

As Managing Partner I had the pleasure of working closely with Gijs Louwers, who worked as a product design intern at UpReach (formerly known as HappyBooth) from November 2016 until mid-February 2017 in Berlin. During his time at our company he was tasked with coming up with a new product for our business-to-consumer market of photobooths. Within three months while managing this project himself, he drafted the intended form language, functional and internal design and worked together closely with product development to make wooden prototypes and 3D-models for this new photo booth. Aside from these activities, Gijs has worked together with other members of our team on graphic design tasks for promotional use. Gijs can be described as a very motivated worker, excelling in working with people from different disciplines. He proved himself as an experienced designer in the autonomous way he approached our intended assignment for him. His expertise in the product design process from ideation to production provided our company with an efficient and significant addition to our product line. Marius Hepp / Managing Partner at Upreach GmBH & Co. KG Berlin

SUMMARY Role At Upreach I worked with management and product development on a new Business-to-Consumer product, to add to the current photobooth assortment the company offers. The result at the end of this internship was a product ready to be produced. I got the opportunity to manage the complete development of a product from idea generation to production-readiness.

Skills developed My activities included but were not limited to: product design, user context research, CAD construction, hardware testing, prototyping, technical drawings for production and user interface design.

INTERNSHIP VIDACLE CO

L - CTO TAA

Gijs was a valuable creative asset in our design team for 6 months, working as a UX/UI design intern. He proved to adapt quickly to our team mentality and everchanging work environment. He provided us with new insights relying on his unique way of thinking characterizing students from the Delft University of Technology, and specifically those students educated at the Industrial Design Engineering Faculty. Furthermore, Gijs proved to be versatile in assuming different roles, whether it was working with software developers, webdevelopers, concepters or management. Additionally, on our business trip to the Cannes Lions Festival he supported us and the TV producers of ‘Onthoud die Naam’ through online support in France. We enjoyed working with Gijs, and offered him the opportunity to keep working as a creative at Vidacle after finishing his internship. Jacco Taal / Founder and CTO

SUMMARY Role Over a period of 6 months I worked at Vidacle, a spin-off of a tech company called Bitnomica, situated in Delft, the Netherlands. As a UX/UI design intern, I worked closely with software developers and project management on the development of an online collaborative video platform, Vidacle.

Skills developed My activities included but were not limited to: digital prototyping, user testing, user experience scenarios, interaction vision drafting, graphic design (Sketch), content screening and a small amount of coding (CSS, HTML5).

8

CONCEPTING

Drafting concepts for webdevelopers in Photoshop and Illustrator I worked on the creation of the style and usability of the platform. I worked together with the creative team to create quick ideas.

SKETCH

Using Sketch, I turned concepts into mockups to be made by software developers. During this internship I used Sketch on a daily basis. Through showcases to project management I presented these mockups to the company.

9 USER TESTING

By means of user testing through InVision and TestFlight I managed a test group of 25 users, developing the platform as we went. This resulted in a final product launched in 2015, both on iPhone and browser. This product was also featured at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in Cannes, which I also attended, in cooporation with the TV program “Onthoud die Naam

TUTORIALS

I was involved in creating guided tutorials for users on the website and on the Vidacle YouTube channel (https://goo.gl/jwZ9bh)

PROJECT FUTURE

10

REFUGEES

CONTEXT

In the future, the amount of envirionmental refugees will rise to astonishing numbers due to draughts and other natural disasters following climate change. Situations happening today in the Sudan and Somalia could happen all around the world in 100 years time. SCENARIO

In a design team of 5 people, we drafted a distopian scenario where the entire world is unsafe. Safe zones do exist around the world, but nations have all but disappeared. Immigration and integration protocols change with newly developed genetic scanning and modification technologies, where only the strong and preferred genes are allowed to enter. INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION

Our immersive experience lets people enter a future immigration office. People are scanned, their genes are modified and upon exit, they receive a passport with a changed version of themselves.

SUMMARY Challenge Create a future scenario and create a product for the theme: refugees in a world of transition.

Goals Create awareness for current developments. Generate an interactive experience that emer-

ses people in this scenario.

Skills developed My activities included but were not limited to: Arduino programming, 3D printing, modelmaking, electrical engineering, scenario

making,

11

NOMINEES DESFORM EXHIBITION 2017 Our design, experience and future scenario were nominated for the DesForm 2017 exhibition to share this experience with a bigger crowd due to its originality, way of execution, critical message and “scary” possible distopia.

PROJECT TOMTOM

13

TOUCH

CONTEXT

Tech-company TomTom has moved into the development of fitness trackers since 2013, and specifically the TomTom Touch in 2016. The company asked our design team to test their product thoroughly with users, and to create a well-founded redesign in 6 months time for them to pursue in the further development of the TomTom Touch.

RESEARCH

Research into the fitness tracker was conducted in controlled environments, like the gym. Supporting software like an application and website were tested in a more homely context. An example of this research can be found in this video: https://youtu.be/DP1p3mLL8JA.

WATCH REDESIGN

The main problems with the TomTom Touch had to do with the watch itself. By redesigning the screens our team solved all of these design issues. This redesign was tested using Flinto. Additionally, new interactions were added like a wristflick.

APPLICATION REDESIGN

The supporting application of the TomTom Touch is in constant connection with the wristband. Major issues were found in this use as well, resulting in a big overhaul. This application was tested using InVision and Sketch.

SUMMARY Challenge Redesign the TomTom Touch smart sports watch.

Goals Identify issues of TomTom Touch in the context

of use.

Redesign the TomTom Touch using these insights.

Skills developed My activities included but were not limited to: context mapping, usability testing, Sketch concepting, wireframing, usage inspection, user research, InVision testing, Flinto testing, AttrakkDiff curves, journey mapping.

PROJECT MENTOR IN COLLABORATION WITH

CONTEXT

Every year, 44.000 people in Holland suffer from a stroke. The majority of patients receives too little therapy after leaving the carecentre due to healthcare budgetary cuts. Healthcare companies like Adjuvo Motion develop wearables and home platforms for patients to recover at home.

RESEARCH

Interviews with experts and patients showed that the majority of people rehabilitating at home with a wearable did not adhere to their therapy due to a lack of motivation.

15 SUMMARY Challenge Create a solution in collaboration with Adjuvo Motion for patients rehabilitating at home from a stroke using wearables.

Goals Increase motivation of patients when rehabili-

tating at home.

Increase effectiveness of wearable technology

of Adjuvo Motion.

Skills developed My activities included but were not limited to: product design, context mapping, interaction vision drafting, concepting, scenario drafting, interviewing.

16 MENTOR The Adjuvo Motion Mentor forms an addition to current wearable technology of the company, motivating the user while rehabilitating at home. It uses principles psychology to generate intrinsic motivation through animations shown throughout their recovery. Significantly improving therapy adherence, healthcare costs have been estimated to drop 10% per patient.
