19 Responses to “Cotton Diaper Bag” sunshine: February 4, 2012 at 4:52 am Is this an ok list of newborn baby items?? I have some time on my hands today, and I made a list of things I’m going to be purchasing for my baby. What am I missing from the list or what should added or what on the list is unnecessary? I’m not due until December, so I have a lot of time to prepare, but any ideas or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks. Jac: February 23, 2012 at 2:20 pm Burp cloths: get the Gerber (or similar) cloth diapers (packs of 12). The “pretty” ones aren’t as absorbent, and the Gerber ones can be bleached clean. A few water-proof crib pads. I put mine on top of the matress pad, so if I need to change a wet sheet, I just change the pad along with it instead of the whole ordeal. Don’t get too many mittens to start. I bought some to match a lot of outfits—I have a thumb sucker! So the mittens were always wet and then the cold made his hands colder than if they were bare. Johnson & Johnson have these great Q-tips for babies. They are shaped in a way that makes them safer–they don’t go into the ear canal, they just clean the outer ear. Diaper rash cream: get the really thick Desitin, not those creamy ones. You want the most zinc oxide you can find in the ingredients: 40% or better. Lansinoh also has a wonderful one. Cleared up my son’s rash over night! You want to get a large diaper bag and also a small one for just quick trips to the store, etc. You don’t always need to lug everything but the kitchen sink everywhere you go. Sometimes you may just need to pack a diaper, wipes, and your “purse” items. If you are going to get towels for your baby, make sure they are big. The cute ones are nice, but they grow out of them so quickly. Kohl’s has some nice ones that fit both my 11 month old and my 5 year old. When your baby gets a little older (4 mos) get the Link a doos. They are great for attaching toys to stroller, car seat, etc. We got the consumer reports guide to baby which was really helpful. They have tons of lists, too, like you made. With all the essentials and the stuff you don’t need. If you are in a colder climate, get the Kiddopotomus Posh Pouch. I loved it because I didn’t have to get an uncomfortable and ackward snow suit for my baby. Just put a blanket on him and put him in his car set with the posh pouch on it. It fit his stroller, too. I agree with Sarah S. The baby Bjorn was a life saver. I would have never gotten anything done around the house if I didn’t have it. I tried a few different slings, but the front carrier worked best. Now that he is older, he loves to face outward to check out his environment.

worked best. Now that he is older, he loves to face outward to check out his environment. Vacuum while wearing it for some great exercise. Congrats and best of luck to you!!! Reply

Zahra: February 12, 2012 at 1:05 am Trying to find a diaper bag.? I ran into a woman at the store and she had a diaper bag that was beautiful. She said that it was 100% washable and cotton (I think), and that it could be ordered in several different fabrics. She also said that the maker of this diaper bag made women’s luggage sets. She said that I could find the bags either on the website or on ebay. Also, I think the brand name is a woman’s name, something like LizClaiborne. Reply

Helpful Kim: February 22, 2012 at 7:00 pm I think the bags you are interested in might be by Vera Bradley. Good Luck! Reply

KandCsMommie: February 13, 2012 at 1:01 am Do you care what kind of diaper bag you carry and are you willing to spend a lot for something? I have a diaper clutch for our 2 YO. All she needs to go out is a diaper or two wipes and a snack so I dont carry a bag for her. Occassionally I will use my one Coach tote that is coated cotton; it’s a bit more spring/summer and I can hold tons in it for longer days out. But my clutch is a PPB Cake Clutch my hubby got for me last year. I think it was like $100. However it is also a purse. In the fall/winter mostly it is my purse as well as her bag (when shes not with me I take her stuff out and just use it for me). If you didnt know who made it and everything you’d NEVER guess it was a diaper clutch. it’s black french cut velvet and tweed underneath. I am Due in dec. and want the bigger ba (trying to decide between the society satchel and cosmopolitan carryall if you have one to give me a review)! ANyway I am leaning toward the cosmopolitan one because it can TOTALLY be a handbag after the fact. And I would prob get it in black also. THe other style is more distinctly a baby bag and is an odd shape for a purse. These bags run about $325-$350 depending which style. To me I went through 4 $50-60 diaper bags in the first year our daughter was born because they kept ripping or they werent as functional as they originally seemed. ANd they are NOTHING I could ever use as a purse. I breastfeed so only need it for my stuff diapers, snack and a change of clothes. ANd I take exceptional care of things so it’s not goin to be “runied” by using it for baby. I am just wondering if any other moms (given you are/were able to spend the money) would do so on a really goreous bag that can double as a handbag ect. Or what is the max you’d spend on a bag? I mean I cant see any woman turning it down if someone offered it to them; but i know that some women even if they had/have the money still wouldnt spend it. I LOVE bags in general and since I use the diaper bag as my bag then I want something I LOVE to carry. Before baby I would spend that much on my own bags; so being the only bag I carry I find no reason not tp spend it now.

bags; so being the only bag I carry I find no reason not tp spend it now. if you look at the Cake collection not the orignial the 2 styles the cosmo clutch and carryall look very much like handbags. I agree the original collection with silk fab. looks like a diaper bag; but if you look at the Cake collection spec. then no they dont. Reply

CMU: March 1, 2012 at 1:43 am If I had the money for a large Coach tote, I would totally buy it. But, I have a really nice camouflage diaper dude from Nordstrom. It was a gift for my baby shower. It is less like a porse and more like a backpack, but I love it, and my husband doesn’t mind carrying it either. I only have one boy and another boy on the way, so it helps that the diaper bag is very masculine. But, yes, I’d pay the money if I could afford a $300-400 bag! Reply

Hanna E: February 17, 2012 at 8:09 am where can one buy rubberized cotton, or fabric to use for a diaper wet bag? Reply

Susan L: February 25, 2012 at 12:37 pm I would try a fabric store, or maybe a curtain fabric store. Curtain fabric stores have lined material, some of which may be waterproof. You can also purchase sealants from hardware and craft stores that make fabric moisture resistant. I don’t know what country you live in but I found this online store that sells lightweight waterproof fabrics in the UK: http://www.fabricuk.com/fabrics.php?fabric_type=185 Hope you find what you want! Vasara: February 17, 2012 at 3:13 pm How to wash an OLD motor oil stain from a delicate cotton dress? In our vehicle, we have a compartment under the seats. The diaper bag was under there and it absorbed enough spilled motor oil (that must have been spilled by the previous owner and we didn’t know about it!) to soak the entire diaper bag and completely soak all of its contents! The one particular dress was expensive ($55 for a 2 year old) and only worn once. Id really love to save the dress if at all possible! We thought we “lost” the diaper bag for a few months until we used the under seat compartment again last weekend so the stain is really old. How can I clean it?

How can I clean it? The dress is white cotton, hand wash only due to hand sewn beads all over it. It now has a nasty brown color all over it and it reeks of motor oil. Please help! Reply

saaanen: February 27, 2012 at 11:16 pm TRY soaking it in Mean Green. If that doesn’t work, nothing will, ($1.50 at dollar stores) Reply

Sara Anna: February 21, 2012 at 10:17 pm Sewing with cotton jersey knit fabric? I have made several diaper bags using this pattern: http://amingledyarn.wordpress.com/gallery/tutorial-hip-mama-diaper-bag/ It calls for heavy-weight interfacing, which I have always used with no issues, and love the form it gives to the bag. Well, my brother and sister-in-law are expecting, and want me to make a diaper bag for them. Problem is, they fell in love with a cotton jersey knit fabric that they want to use as the lining of the bag, and then I would use a woven fabric for the outside. I have searched for a woven fabric in a similar pattern to the one they love, but it’s very unique and I am not able to find anything close to it. If I use the jersey knit fabric, can I still apply heavy interfacing to it? I’m nervous because since it will be a diaper bag, they will be shoving and taking things out of it frequently, and I don’t want things catching on it and stretching it. I also thought about applying the iron-on vinyl to it, hoping that might help with items catching on it and stretching it. Any ideas or suggestions? Reply

Lene O: February 29, 2012 at 5:25 am A tight knit jersey won’t snag as much as you think. I would use a light weight stabilizer or interface with most jerseys. For the woven fabric, may I suggest that you do have options -use a solid fabric that matches or coordinates with the background color of the jersey you could use fabric paint to create the jersey print – maybe a few larger size versions of the print or cut some of the jersey motifs and applique them to the exterior, randomly or perhaps in a band around the exterior use embroidery thread to recreate the jersey pattern onto the exterior fabric Some important things I looked for in diaper bags: lightweight-’ cause so much had to go into it; washable, a sturdy bottom-’cause so many times it ended up on the floor (the car, the room I was in , doctor’s office waiting room. which is why washable was so important

Andy M: February 26, 2012 at 5:48 am What are essential/best baby items to have as a new parent? What’s junk? What’s invaluable? Hints? Tips? (Sorry this is so long! Many thanks in advance to those who reply!) We are at week 34 awaiting the arrival of our Babygirl. Gifts and hand-me-downs are starting to come in that we’re marking off the “need to get” list (per Babies R Us). We still have lots we need to get, so I wanted to ask for your opinions. For all those moms and dads out there, I have attached, below, the Babies R Us “Parents Checklist.” What is necessary? What is not? What is invaluable? What did you get on a whim and are eternally grateful for having? What turned out to be nothing but junk? What brands are the best (i.e., I hear that Boudreaux’s “Butt Paste” is the best there is)? I’m starting to scout out Craigslist and eBay for deals (who the heck knew breast pumps were unbelievably expensive??? At least I can get new, in box items from eBay and save a few if I watch like a hawk!). If any of you have insights that you would share, we would be very grateful. Thanks! Ok well for safety all you need to beginning with is baby monitors the rest are for when they start crawling wwhich wont be until they are 6-8 months so you don’t need to purchase them just now unless you want to be super prepared. haze: February 28, 2012 at 2:39 pm is poly-cotton toxic? i’m trying to buy an organic cotton diaper bag or hemp diaper bag but most diaper bags are poly-cotton. Reply

JcL: February 29, 2012 at 12:14 am No polyester is not toxic. If is was they wouldn’t be able to make clothes from it. Reply

Leah's Mommy: February 29, 2012 at 11:27 pm Cloth diapering moms, what diaper pail do you use? Or do you just use a trash can? I saw this one on cotton babies with a carbon filter and all of that, is that really necessary? And what do you line it with, a trash bag or a cloth one? Reply

Jason: March 2, 2012 at 4:04 am Can I reuse a disposable hepa filtration vacuum bag? These bags are expensive ($5 a piece abouts) and I have pets, so they get filled up very quickly. These aren’t the regular paper bags, the material is kind of like the material of diapers, it appears and feels as if the bag is composed of many layers of meshed cotton sheets rather than just the ordinary paper material of most disposable vacuum bags. I can’t use any other bags for my vacuum, so I’m wondering if my vacuum will be harmed if were to dispose of the contents of the bag in order to get a few more uses out it and save some money. Reply
