Buckfast Abbey was founded nearly a thousand years ago and stood for five hundred years before it was closed by Henry VIII.

Easy to find with no admission/parking charges By Road - Buckfast is only half a mile from the A38 Devon Expressway, midway between Exeter and Plymouth. Parking and entrance are FREE and there is easy access to all facilities. By Rail - The nearest stations are Newton Abbot and Totnes, both about 20 minutes drive from the Abbey. By Bus - A local bus services operates from Newton Abbot town centre to Buckfast. There is also a coach service between Exeter and Plymouth, which stops at the Buckfastleigh slip road on the A38. Buckfast Abbey is famous for its stained glass, bee keeping and of course its Tonic Wine. Buckfast offers a visit filled with history, heritage, good food and fine shopping.

The present community of monks returned in 1882 and rebuilt Buckfast Abbey on its medieval foundations, finishing the church in 1938.

A Peaceful Sanctuary Today Buckfast Abbey is the home to a community of Benedictine monks who lead a life of prayer, work and study.

Central to every Monastery is its church. It is here that monks gather for prayer at regular intervals throughout the day.

Our spacious, Award Winning Giftshop sells a wide variety of gifts including the famous Buckfast Tonic Wine. Also available are a delicious selection of wines, biscuits and preserves produced in the West Country.

The Abbey Bookshop Set on the site of the medieval great Guesthall, this is one of the largest religious bookshops in the South West which serves clergy, schools and churches alike. Alongside our large children’s section, peruse our rich selection of religious gifts, fine jewellery, sacred music and Christian greeting cards.

The Monastic Produce Shop

The Grange Restaurant Incorporating the 12th century arch of the North gate, the Grange Restaurant provides a superb setting for morning coffee, lunch or a cream tea.

The Abbey Church of St Mary provides a quiet and peaceful haven for individuals of all denominations to spend time in personal prayer and contemplation. Visitors come for both the tranquil atmosphere and inspirational story surrounding St Mary’s Abbey.

Housed in a restored eighteenth century mill, this shop has one of the most extraordinary collections of gifts made by nuns and monks from across Europe. Select from soaps, cosmetics, jams, candles, high quality wines, beers, linens and devotional goods.
