Reimagining the Redevelopment of Delhi’s Kathputli Colony Delhi, India The Kathputli Colony in Delhi is filled with the spirit of gypsy lifestyle and magic. They previously lived in tents that were easily packed and moved as circumstances conspired. They used their tents both to adapt to, and transform the environments that they inhabited. As the world continued to urbanize, temporary settlements became more permanent. Tents gave way to metal sheds, then evolved into warrens of tiny dwellings constructed of brick. The Kathputli have thrived as a gypsy colony, gaining exceptional cultural significance. Recently cities in India launched programs to construct new homes- for makeshift colonies. The Delhi Development Authority has given Raheja Developers the right to one third of the Kahtputli colony in exchange for providing 2,800 replacement units. The colonists currently occupy one and two-storey dwellings and will -be rehoused in a massive wall of 14-storey slabs at the back of the site. The process of consultation and the proposed redevelopment have not adequately recognized the unique character of the community. As a result, the design of the replacement housing poses a threat to the community’s survival as a colony of artists and street performers. This thesis explores an alternative approach to the redevelopment of the Kathputli Colony. 1

VERITAS
Ottawa, Ontario
The Dominican University College (DUC) needs to become more attracting to the community around it. It needs to be recognized and modernized to this day and age. It needs to encourage young adults to go there and learn the Philosophy and Theology the Dominican Brothers provide. According to some philosophers, lightning and thunder were the original source of religion and mythology. This led me to my concept, and the name of the project, “Veritas”. It means inspiration, or truth. I thought it suitable to the addition, since we had to create more teaching areas and a renovation of the library and church. In the design process I followed a number of different research paths. All of them continually being inspired by the energy of the lightning, even if they became other fields of research.

OSMOSIS
Ottawa, Ontario Ottawa has a distinct unique mix between cultures; but one thing that every Canadian knows about is maple syrup. The Osmosis Maple Syrup Market is a maple syrup factory, juxtaposing new techniques with the old traditions in Lebreton Flats. This market unifies the historical and the prospective future of Canada. The program and location melt the Ontario and Quebec border, uniting the provinces simultaneously. Tightly spaced ‘row-cropped’ sugar maple saplings are used to decontaminate the land. The roof operates as the filtration and purifying process step of creating maple syrup. The market forms and shapes one of Canada’s most important natural resources. The process of discovering the form of the building initiated with a concentration with maple syrup itself. Abstract shapes were created using glass blowing. These shapes were scanned and because of the translucency of the sculptures, a new digital form was discovered. Using Rhino and grasshopper the mesh was modified and realised into a pavilion like architecture.

BMX SPORTS FACILITY Berlin, Germany
Extreme sport, extreme architecture. Bicycle motocross is all about speed and tricks. This facility, located on an island in Berlin, acts as not only a track for BMX riders, but a facility for the community as well. The building spans the length of the island, working as circulation through the island. The existing building on the site, the Berlin Model Basin, had to be incorporated into our facility design. Because of the elongated shape of the site, I chose to develop a BMX facility, using the ‘straights’ of the site as the sports tracks, and splitting the program into four strips. The facility uses the original structure of the existing building located on the site. The concept portrays extreme sports juxtaposed with community lifestyles. A public pathway interweaves with the BMX track and the sport becomes closer to the people. I achieved this by using the track as a roof to the underground pedestrian pathway.

AUDIO VISUAL CENTRE Madrid, Spain
The site is located across from Madrid`s popular Matadero, an old slaughterhouse revamped into a place for new and contemporary art, dance and music. The program of my building is an Audio Visual Technology Centre. This building emphasizes the new and innovative ideas and experiences that are being discovered with technology. This building is comprised of two seperate sectors, public and private. Both buildings share the same form but one cantilevers over the site, and the other slopes into the ground.

General Building Module The installations for this building run through the tops and bottoms of the modules. This creates a conversation between the inner facade of ``guts`` and the outer facade of ``the cover``. This building is the epitamy of technology.

66 MOHAWK PROPOSAL Brantford, Ontario
The Canadian Industrial Heritage Centre (CIHC) came to MMMC Architects with an idea of an Interpretive Centre and Park on 2 acres of 66 Mohawk Street in Brantford. Two historical structures remain on this site, a Time Keeper’s Office and a Portico, both from the Cockshutt Plow Company, and built when the business expanded in 1903. The challenge was to thoughtfully adapt this historic property into a continuing contemporary Interpretive Park and Centre, while protecting its heritage value. CIHC required this Interpretive Park to commemorate and represent Brantford’s entire industrial heritage. This was achieved through thoughtful organization and landscaping of the site. Five final images were produced for CIHC to use towards promoting their idea to city officials and planners, both to gain support and to help propel their project forward. The structures are shown restored to their original design, which was based on a photograph of the front of the Office Building and Portico from 1929. The Time Office acts as an Interpretive Center for visitors, displaying historical documentation and artifacts, and also contains a weather vestibule, administrative office and a bathroom.

REGENISIS - CCA CHARETTE Montréal, Québec Dear 2015, The World’s Fair Exposition 2067; project ReGenesis, man without his world. Survival has become possible on the archipelago of Montreal. The world has dissolved into an architecture apocalypse. Built form became an infection, hacked by technology. Sentient machines have scoured the earth of all resources, in the process creating buildings that self replicate and breed using drones and 3-D printers. Technology has become a plague upon this earth. With their shorelines left to despair; St. Helens’ and Notre-Dame Islands have become the only space of natural preservation. It is our utopia within the dystopia: a pavilion for cultural, artistic and scientific protection. The Fuller Dome is the center of an organic network preserving all forms of knowledge and life. A shield of energy prevents technology from invading upon the landscape and humankind is able to rediscover their primitive roots. This is your future. The islands of human preservation.

KINETIC DISPLAY CASE Ottawa, Ontario
The purpose of this project was to design a display case with a volume of 1m ³. We produced a kinetic interactive display, that can have three dierent static positions (open, closed to the left, and closed to the right) The unique part of the project are the joints, which are constructed out of fabric sewn into a grid. Nine wooden frames were fitted into this grid, allowing for a rotational movement. My initial contribution to this project was the general concept behind the structures movement, to developing the idea further, and finally with the construction.

THORNCROWN CHAPEL Ottawa, Ontario
Throwncrown Chapel, in Arkansas, USA, was designed by architect Fay Jones, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. A 1:20 scale technical model of this building was made with five group members. Over 1000 pieces comprised of three dierent trusses, multiple joints and beams, create an amazing array of shadows. The role I had in this group project included organizing tasks in the initial planning stages, as well as assembling the building. The group worked like an assembly line, allowing for faster production.

THE VISION IN MY HEAD Working with my hands invigorates my mind. The ability to see and feel the visions that were initially in my head amazes and motivates me. Creativity can form an atmosphere from nothing. It can trigger emotion in the viewer. All architecture should have this eect on the individual.
