FROM THE CHAIRMAN

PAUL D.P. SCALLY Good afternoon Ladies and Gentleman, Girls and Boys and a warm welcome to Priestfield Stadium as we host our first Gillingham Ladies FC game. As most of you already know, there have been several developments at the club over the summer leading to our formal partnership with the Gillingham Ladies team. As Chairman, I have been looking to develop a Ladies team for a while as a natural extension to our Centre of Excellence for Girls and am very excited by this new partnership. It’s been a busy preseason off the pitch as we prepared for a transitional year, incorporating the ladies fully into our set up and building strong foundations for the future.

That future is already looking extremely bright with our aspirations for the girl’s and women’s game. Besides our firm commitment to support the local community with initiatives and appearances, this summer we launched our Girls Academy, offering a place for elite female footballers in Kent to train daily as well as complete a BTEC Level 3 in Sport. We have also developed an offer for girls and boys to engage with the game through a BTEC in Performing Arts led by the GFC cheerleading group, the Gems. Our plans at the club are ambitious and exciting but realistic. We will continue to build strong partnerships and work towards a very

tempting bid for the FA to consider when the opportunity arises to gain entrance to the FA Women’s Super League (WSL II). But we will take one step at a time and enjoy the journey. Thank you for coming along to support our team this afternoon. We hope you will become a regular on a Sunday afternoon and tell your friends. Make no mistake, your support will be invaluable in developing Gillingham Ladies FC as we start to write this exciting new chapter in our Club’s history. Enjoy the game. Up the Gills Ladies Paul D P Scally Chairman

BLUES NEWS

LONG MAKES GILLS LADIES HISTORY Gillingham Ladies enjoyed a historic day playing their first home game at Priestfield Stadium two weeks ago. A special day for all staff and players, it was even more special for midfielder Charlotte Long who etched her name into the club’s history as the first female player to score at the ground. Following a disappointing dismissal against Brighton, Long came back fighting with a goal to put her team 1-0 up against Keynsham Ladies. In front of a crowd of 351 fans, Long described how it felt to be walking out onto the Gillingham FC pitch: “It was a bit surreal” Long confessed. “I didn’t expect to come out to such a crowd with everyone cheering us on!” “It’s special obviously to be the first one to score here but it was a team goal and it could have been Jade or I to score it.” Reflecting on the final 2-1 scoreline, Long was pleased for her teammates and the crowd who came to cheer them on, that the Gills had secured their first three points of the season: “It’s great because it gives the girls a big boost because we needed it. We’ve been working hard at our game but it’s nice to get a reward at the end of the day.” Long went on to explain the crucial motivation the crowd provided and hopes they’ll be in equal good voice this afternoon: “It always helps when you walk out and they’re all cheering you and are all behind you. You don’t really want to disappoint the crowd and you make sure you do you’re best.”

RESERVES RALLY AGAINST BEDFORD Jason Wright’s young side produce mature performance to beat rivals 4-1 at Chatham Town FC Gillingham Ladies Reserves progressed to the next round of the League Cup courtesy of a 4-1 victory over Bedford Ladies Reserves, with goals from Kayleigh Galvin, Ashleigh Loosemore, Megan Carroll and Charlotte Long. The young Gills side made up of a host of Gillingham Centre of Excellence graduates mixed with first team players, controlled the game from the off, enjoying the majority of possession and limiting Bedford to few clear cut opportunities.

Gills didn’t have to wait too long for a goal as Galvin deservedly got off the mark. The Gills striker showed skill to skim and leave her markers in the dusk, demonstrating blistering pace to take the ball down, charge towards goal and finish with great composure.

Bedford kept fighting throughout the game, demanding Gills to step up and battle for their victory. The young side stood firm and continued to enjoy the majority of possession. Alabaster was kept on her toes when an ambitious shot looked set to creep into the back of the net. Alabaster saw it all the way and was able to nudge the ball out for a corner.

Later in the half, Loosemore scored her second goal in as many games to extend Gills advantage.
