Water has always been a part of city life, and is
dimension & scale
often the reason for its origin and development. It is an essential element in human life and the development of urban centers on banks of rivers and coastal areas is due to the presence of water as a communication factor.
1st year project, 2nd semester
Throughout the times and up to the present day, this strong relationship between cities and water has been achieved by its implantation at the margin, directing it to the water. When reflecting on the horizontality of the current city/water articulation, with the purpose of reinvent it, the image of a city organized vertically, not rooted in the water but detached from it. By raising the buildings of the surface of the water, the result is a layered division of the elements of the city: a lower circulation layer, devoid of mesh, and a top layer conditioned by the buildings volume, generating a mesh of voids. The communication between the two levels is ensured by a third layer: a mesh of floating paths that develops between the voids. Being necessarily artificial, this mesh lives from its simulated topography, which coexists in counterpoint with the regularity of the buildings. The mesh of voids, generated by the buildings originated from a geometric base which, despite its clear stiffness it’s possible a variability in the composition of the city: defining a drawing that is subdivided into parts by its successive multiplication. Different readings of the rules necessarily result in different conceptions of the city.

What happens and does not stop. And what stopped and did not leave. 2nd year project, 1st semester
The road to Chelas. Concerns, ideas and convictions. The problems and the solutions. The intentions. The interventions. None of us are from here but we all stop here. We came back here. We stay here. Thinking about the more and less urban, In more or less urban places. On what encourages us. Yesterday. On what motivates us. The tomorrow. Does not matter. We do project. ‘Chelas’ is the place, ‘Chelas’ is (now ours) Cradle.

Within this estate there were several empty lots,

defined with the intention of building a dwelling in each one of them. Filled only with trees and granit outcrops, these spaces were very similar to each other and, at the same time, completely different. The value of these spaces had to be

clearing of the lot and uses different viewpoints, that can be completly open or restricted by the treetops. The entrance to the lot is made by the highest point and the route to the entrance of the house is made by a stream line. The entrance is located in a strategic point of the winding interior accesses, as well as the reception space. To the left of this area we have the common spaces of the room and the office, situated in the southernmost part. To the right we entered the dining room followed by the kitchen. Spaces adjoining the corridor to access the private area of the house, consisting of 3 bedrooms. This private area surrounds the land and ends on the northern side of the land but always facing the public area of the house, therefore facing south.

the others accompanying the design of the road that is adjacent to it, this is the main volume of reception of the hotel guests, as well as the reception of the public. A space that houses a library with study and reading areas, an auditorium and a restaurant. Four volumes diverge from the main building taking advantage of the orography of the place. Each of these bodies is formed by two moments: the private and the social. In the confrontation of these moments, there are breakdowns that take part of the dynamism of the terrain. The arrangement of these bodies allows the terrain to be extended over the constructed mass itself and that there is continuity in the landscape plane suggesting a closer relationship with nature. This language also leads to the design of a mall that, intercepting - even in a timely manner - the receiving body, establishes a connection between the two previously disconnected realities and calls the city to nature.

in structures punctually found throughout the Park of Monsanto, the Mills. This new Mill takes the principles of these vernacular structures, characterized essentially by its pure geometry, of stereotomic character finishing by giving it a great opacity. The mill seeks to implant itself hidden in the forest, anchoring at the point where two preexisting paths of connection with the Main Road meet, giving it a character of discovery and revelation which contributing to the richness of immersive experience in the Forest Park . It seeks finally a structure that not only respond to new programmatic needs, but also the creation of a new space of serenity and seclusion, where the idea of “seeing without being seen ‘is paramount, which dematerialize in the middle of contrasting nature with exposure and nakedness and the imposing nature of ‘Monsanto’.

inherent deviations of the construction processes - planning adjustments, reconsidering badly anticipated decisions and avoiding imperfections. This particular case focuses on the design and construction of a door in the main social area of the apartment. More than just a passageway between spaces we wanted to keep the social specs of the livingroom by matching the wood choice | OSB | and the mechanism | Sliding door | with the rest of the interior design. The final result is an object that belongs to the entire space and serves its purpose as a door just when absolutely needed.

Prof.ª Dr.ª Teresa Valsassina Heitor
To Whom It May Concern I am writing this reference at the request of Gil Ribeiro. I have known Gil in my capacity of Architectural Design teacher at Instituto Superior Técnico as well as director of the Master Program in Architecture. I’ve also supervised his Msc thesis which was awarded in 2018 the classification of Very Good (16/20). I hope my perspective will be helpful to evaluate him. Gil obtained a 5 years degree in Architecture from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon. During this period, I was able to monitor his academic record and check his interests in the field of architectural studies and in particular architectural design practice. His efforts have produced good results across various academic disciplines. In general, he has proven to be a very trustworthy person. His work was always developed with dedication and he has demonstrated valuable skills in dealing with Architectural Design complexity, as well as a strong work ethic. Just as importantly, I’m sure Gil would come with an enthusiasm for learning and networking, as well as a resolute desire to understand new architectural design methodologies and approaches. In conclusion, I would recommend Gil Ribeiro. If you should ever need any additional information you can feel free to contact me anytime.
