For Public Realm & Urban Regeneration projects, EN124:2015 reinforces the importance of best-in-class access covers, and gives peace of mind to specifiers and end users
A substantial revision of the performance standard for manhole covers & gully gratings in the shape of EN 124:2015 now provides a clear framework for manufacturers and project designers to adhere for infrastructure access solutions.
Superseding EN 124:1994, this European Standard is now broken down into six Parts. Part 1 contains general design and performance requirements. Parts 2-6 address performance requirements for manhole tops and gully tops made of specific materials. Part 2 deals with Ductile iron, Part 3 with Steel and Part 5 refers to Composite covers. Now for the first time a standard exists governing both galvanised and composite covers & frames in line with traditional ductile iron.
To help you identify whether proposed products comply fully with the standard, the following markings are mandatory and must be a permanent, integral part of the cover and frame: 1. Name of the European Standard e.g EN 124-5 2. Appropriate class (B125) 3. Name and/or identification mark of the manufacturer 4. Factory of manufacturer which may be in code 5. Date or week and year of manufacture (coded or not coded)
An absence of conformance to the highest European standards could potentially pose a safety risk to operators or the general public.
