How it was born... An awesome teacher who inititates the project.... (bootlicking at its best)
+ Luis Lee’s work at ART JAM 2003 exhibition show. The work is untitled yet contains many interesting visual elements within. When i look at this piece, i thought i saw letters. Therefore i chose this piece.

Analog - Digital First try out with Illustrator
Using just three elements derived from the artist’s artwork, i tried out the word Handgloves and amazingly, i could come up with relatively clear letters. However the comment was that it is too dense and needs more refinement as in letter a, s and so on.

Comment: Dancing font, display type. The a have to be worked on further and r,f,o and the crossbar of t have to be adjusted to make it more readable. Also, while making this full set of elements, i have to thicken some areas which led to me dividing this element, , into two. Therefore, there are 4 elements now.

Comment: The a is better and good improvements to p and q. The tail of s needs to be lengthened. The comma is hideous, think again.

Comment: Confirmed set of letters, traced out and prepared for fontlab transfer. More punctuations are also created using the modules for variety. For the comma, i created another module just for it as nothing else could fit.

Luisephe IS BORN ! Let us make a book about it....
Inspiration... Luis lee uses found objects that are ephemeral I shall use papers that people use to print namecards and the leftover acrylic from type tree.
+ South Park, the color scheme is vibrant and good for display purposes. People are also more attracted to colors. My purpose of using this is to prevent my type specimen book to turn ephemeral. I want it to be a collectible.
+ Monopoly coupons from Mcdonalds extends out and we can see every letter M. I want to adopt this configuration for my type sampler so that people can view Luisephe at one glance. Accordian bind is chosen.
Concept of type sampler As my artist is quite obscure, i only could obtain information of him from this book called contemporary artists of Singapore. However, from the artist description, i would consider him an eco artist, so therefore, i am going to mimic his style of invoking thoughts in people, without being too blatant, on how we could save our damaged planet. The book would capture the essence of the artist, contain information about the type as well as environmental conservation. One might think why do i not use cardboxes and packaging materials that the artist use and chose to use acrylic instead. Well, for me, i feel that even if we dedicate a book to someone, it is unprofessional to copy what the person uses in his works but rather, his style and quality that would give even greater meaning to the book as we have managed to expand his influences. That i think, is the greatest tribute. My materials may not be eco-friendly but however, neither did Luis Lee. The card boxes he used were not made for him to use in his installations but rather found and used again instead of thrown away. The same goes for my sampler, the acrylic for my type tree is ephemeral, once the project is over, we have to bring down everything and throw them away, so now that i give it a second life to make it a permanent keep, we have lesser wastage in the sense.

2 sets on a piece of A3 acrylic sheet. After mounting the white acrylic on the yellow transparent acrylic using acrylic glue, i mounted the covers to the book body using double sided tape.
