Ring Re

Connection

Incorporate cultural traces into the design of peopleoriented transportation facilities to create a healthy and attractive town center. Through the State Abattoir ring walk, the whole environment is integrated and resonates with the Brickpitt ring walk. This ring walk provides various activities for those who want to linger around, and a fast transit line between Sydney Olympic Railway Station and Metro Station also provided. While traveling, people can also enjoy the beauty of Sydney Olympic Park streets and industrial traces from different angles. My design attempts to evoke memories of the Sydney Olympic park culture and RECONNECT the culture, transportation, and social interaction of the Sydney Olympic park neighborhood.

CONTEXT MAP

01

Sydney Olympic park covers an area of 640 hectares and belongs to the central river city. It was the venue of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and is currently used for various sports and cultural activities. Sydney Olympic Park has the Olympic Park train station and a proposed metro station. It is an important strategic area for the next 20 years. For this project, I will focus on the street design in the central area of the Sydney Olympic Park.

HISTORICAL ANALYSIS

02

Sydney Olympic Park went through multiple stages of transformation to reach what it is today, all the way from the arrival of Europeans to the uprising of the State Abattoir and State Brickwork and to the birth of Sydney Olympic Park. It’s a dramatic evolution in Sydney Olympic Park that lasted 212 years (1788-2000), even till now the government is still constantly making plans to improve the area.

STATE ABATTOIR HISTORY The federal-style architecture that has gone through many years has carried a lot of memory and culture.

05

STATE ABATTOIR CONTEXT Its material and architectural features form a unique contrast with the surrounding environment.

STATE ABATTOIR LANDSCAPE ELEMENTS

07

NARRATIVE

08

First, strengthen people’s memory of the industrial culture of Sydney Olympic Park, feel the history of State Abattoir, and then learn about healthy eating by understanding and experimenting with urban edible gardens, and finally accept the concept of balanced diet through close contact with nature and active exercises, so as to reduce excessive intake of meat. These three scenes are closely connected through different levels of paths, truly integrating the site with the traffic, culture and social interaction of the surrounding community.

Understanding healty diet • Vegetarian restaurant

To feel the history of the State abattoir

• Edible garden

• State abattoir ring walk • Industrial cultural venue exhibition • Significant vegetation

Embrace nature • Outdoor exercise area •

GROUP STRUCTURE PLAN ANALYSIS

09

• Change the land use near state abattoir and add the land for culture venue. • The height of the floor is reduced, so that the center has a better view. • Broaden the width of the road to allow more space for people to pass. • The original urban green space is preserved, so that the whole place has more places to breathe.

This place will be planned as a mixed-use area with high-density residential areas, commercial areas, and open spaces. So here will have the opportunity to become a vibrant and diverse community center.

This place is located between Australian Ave a n d O l y m p i c B u l a v e rd , and is connected to the railway station and the metro station. This place is a cultural and transportation strategic center.

The terrain here is relatively gentleďźŒthe highest elevation difference is only three meters, and there is a possibility of building a raingarden in the low terrain.

Aus

This place is located between the two stations and the main road. It has high accessibility. At the same time, the area does not allow vehicles to pass, which greatly protects the safety of the walking and cycling environment.

THEORETICAL FRAMWORK

14

PRINCIPLES

15

• Increase the connectivity and accessibility of the urban road environment.

Provide at least 10m wide pedestrian through zone links to the new metro and train stations, as well as Olympic Boulevard and Australia Avenue, increasing travel opportunities in 4 areas.

Provide safe, separate bike lanes and bicycle lots on each street connecting the new subway station to the existing train station to reduce car trips and increase station coverage.

Provide foot bridge connecting the new subway station to the existing train station to reduce car trips and increase station coverage.

16

• Strengthen the biodiversity of urban streetscape.

Established rain gardens and water recycling systems in the streets to reduce energy consumption.

Provide shade trees at the station plazas and connecting streets to create a green belt connect to surrounding areas and provide attractive walking routes .

Provide native vegetation at open spaces and connecting streets to enhance the biodiversity.

17

• Enhance cultural heritage of Sydney Olympic park.

Established foot bridge to give difference experiences of herritage

Strengthen the outdoor environment of State Blue Restaurant and integrate catering into the local architectural environment

Integrate cultural elements into the street design, connect the surrounding streets to form a cultural belt

18

• Improve the social quality, including the interactivity and vitality of community.

Provide outdoor restaurants to activate the local economy and vitality

Establish community parks to provide a variety of entertainment and leisure activities

Create a cultural center to enhance a sense of place and belonging

PROCESS DRAWING

20

I used each entrance of the site to simulate the flow network diagram of the crowd to determine the preliminary shape of my design

I connect these paths to determine the areas where people may stay

I added a circular pedestrian bridge to make sure it connects the surrounding environment and the main buildings

I will further refine the design and determine the main planting areas and human activity areas

Ring Re

Connection

Use ring walk to connect culture, transportation, and social interaction

PERSPECTIVE 1 Walking on the street and feel the glory of the past. The fluffy shrubs on the street are like sheep that once wandered down the street. The seats composed of gravel and steel make you feel the charm of industrial culture. Go through the rose garden and follow the palm trees and sculptures in the distance to the depths of the road. Sitting at the entrance of the cafe, looking at the passing people and the heritage of the state abattoir not far away, you should enjoy life and time.

32

PERSPECTIVE 2 This path allows you to quickly pass between two traffic stations. The display board on the railing can also let you know about the state abattoir or meat culture. With the beautiful scenery of purple Jacaranda and state abattoir in the distance, you can be attracted to the indoor museum to learn more cultural knowledge by the museum sign in front.

33

PERSPECTIVE 3

34

This is the scene from the vegetarian restaurant. A large number of edible plants, purple Pig face and lemon trees and tomatoes in the distance are planted at the entrance of the restaurant. This edible garden allows people to understand vegetarian food more intuitively and feel the growth of life.

PERSPECTIVE 4

35

This is the entrance to the east of the road, near Australia avenue. There are open outdoor place and shelters for the night market. Surrounded by dense planting areas, people can have close contact with nature. Here you can enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle.

PHYSICAL MODEL

36

This model explains the relationship between the pedestrian bridge and the surrounding buildings. The lights of the museum in the distance attract people to go. The ring walk on the side connects the two roof gardens and provides opportunities for strolling and resting. Scaleďźš1:250 @A1

PHYSICAL MODEL

37

These two photos can more clearly see the changes in the terrain of the entire site. At the same time, you can feel the integration of State Abattoir heritage with surrounding buildings and the Ring walk.

PHYSICAL MODEL

38

These photos are mainly scenes from the east entrance. The existence of the pedestrian bridge does not disturb the entire site, but connects the entire site together.
