NHS alum Jason Freeman returns for his first year as Northwood’s director of instrumental music. A graduate of Winston-Salem State University, he was an arranger, a three-year section leader and a member of the Wind Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, Marching Band, and Horn Ensemble. In 2009, he was selected as a member of the prestigious National Collegiate Wind Ensemble and performed under world-class conductors at Carnegie Hall. In 2011 Freeman was selected as first chair at the HBCU National Band Director Consortium and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education. After graduation he taught band at Lexington High School. In 2014, he received his Master of Music degree in Music Performance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Over the past four years he taught high school band in Nashville, TN, taking a program from seven to as many as seventy-three members. While in Nashville, Freeman conducted Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Pep Band. He is excited to return home and lead the Northwood High School Marching Chargers. This is Matthew Hanson’s 7th year teaching choral music and guitar at Northwood. He graduated in 2012 from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he received both his Bachelor of Music Performance and Bachelor of Music Education degrees. Hanson is an active member of the National Association for Music Education as well as the American Choral Director’s Association. He serves as the faculty advisor for the Tri-M Music Honor Society and music director/arranger for Northwood’s award-winning a cappella group, “Pitch Please.”
In April 2018, Northwood High School received a SupportMusic Merit Award from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. The SupportMusic Merit Award recognizes individual schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students and is part of their Best Communities for Music Education program. NHS is one of only five schools and one school district recognized in North Carolina this year. To qualify for the award, NHS answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
