In this first part of my portfolio I show some of the projects I have developed in the graphic area. In them you will notice the different techniques I have learned during the first two years of the degree. Despite the fact that I tend to have a clean and crisp style, especially in layouts, I really enjoy using manual techniques to make my projects more expressive and transmit exactly what I want to. Most of the time this handwritten compositions come from sketches, which are always the starting point of my creations.

DINNER IS SERVED LE CORBUSIER ET LA CUISINE
CHARCOAL FONAMENTS DEL PROJECTE III A3 2013
What would you do if you had Le Petit Cabanon all for yourself during one night? This was the starting point of this poster. We had to create an event during one night at Le Corbusier’s workshop in the Côte d’Azur. Mine consisted in a very exclusive dinner for six hosted by the catalan chef Sergi Roca with products (mainly seafood) from the zone. I decided to imitate Le Corbusier’s drawing style and drew the main dish and his signature just like it was one of the architect sketches from his diaries. Above you can see Le Corbusier working in Le Cabanon and some sketches made by him.

WEIRD CALLIGRAPHY SKILLS After having learned how to write Neuland, Caroline (see above), Roman and Italica during the term, we were asked to create a logo with a five-letter word using the script we preferred as one of the final projects. I chose the word Weird and wrote it in Italica as it has a much more relaxed feel and it resembles more to the kind of handwriting we are used to, rather than the other styles which are more inflexible. I used a bamboo tip which was almost a centimeter wide as it created a bolder result.

This project consisted in creating a poster for the festival “Bona Nit Barcelona”. We had to take in consideration the mood of the festival, which mixes ecology and alternative music. As a result I opted for creating the lettering using the linocut printing technique over Manila paper and then included all the information in calligraphy to add a casual touch more akin to the public. Mine among other nine posters from Elisava were chosen to be exposed on the festival area. On the right you can see the linoleum, some of the first prints and the final one.

DRAWING AS A DESIGN TOOL During the last term of this scholar year we were encouraged to sketch a lot as a tool to develop an idea. We were given a starting point, mine was the letter H, and then design a space and an object from that. I ended up designing a walk in closet that had the shape of an H and a beach bar that had an H-shaped chill out sofa. Moreover, I had generated a ton of drawings that had nothing to do with the final results. At the end of the term we were asked to show our work and what we had learnt from the course to the other students. In my case I mixed all the drawings I had generated in a folded leaflet. It contained most of my previous sketches on one side creating a pattern, so it could be a poster (see the left page) and the final results on the other (see above). Finally, I concluded that Picasso was right: Inspiration exists but it has to find you working, or in this case, drawing.

THE EXORCIST MOVIE CREDITS As a part of the typography class we had to redesign the opening titles of a movie. I chose the exorcist and inspired by the mood of the film I created a handmade typography. It consisted in sewing the names and then dying the thread with aniline. Later on the thread expelled all the ink that dyed the paper in different ways depending on the color and the amount of ink that had been applied. The typography itself consisted in a sans serif font. All of the letters were sewn without any layout so each one was different from the others. I handed in both the movie credits and the original handmade frames as a storyboard. (Which you can see on the pictures)

BRACELET VISUAL COMPOSITION
DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION PROJECTS I A4 2013
This was the first project of the year and a quick one, with only two classes we had to choose an object with personal value and transform it into a visual composition. My object was a silver bracelet my mother gave me. What I found interesting about it was its shape and geometry. I related it to the opposite poles, black and white, yes and no. The final composition consisted on showing these two sides using the two parts of the bracelet. One is the metal part, which contains everything simple and functional. The other side is all about everything that comes with the bracelet but you don’t appreciate, the external meanings. Above you can appreciate the original bracelet and a sketch.

ESTIL DIRECTE REDESIGNING A MAGAZINE The final term was all about editorial design, which for me is the most appealing. We had to redesign a magazine that was poorly designed and transform it sticking to the original target. I took my high school magazine and redesigned it from zero as it was a mess. I kept the structure very clean and crisp because I considered that all the different themes would have to adapt to the new design. I also choose new typography and distributed the ads in a way that I considered appropriate according to the contents. You can see different page layouts on the right (An interview, beginning of an editorial and some content pages). Also we had to create a new masthead for the new cover. I created a lettering to add some fun and make it more easy-going. When I finished the magazine I offered the masthead to the real publication and nowadays it is used in every publication.

PINHOLE CAMERA PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESSING
WOOD LASERCUT DIBUIX DE REPRESENTACIÓ I INTERPRETACIÓ CD COVER 2014
Elisava is known for his mixture between design and engineering and seeing design from a technological point of view. Each student had to design and build their own pinhole camera. I designed it and then cut it with the laser cut machine this way the meeting points between the pieces of wood were exact and perfect, so no light entered inside the camera. I took some pictures and finally chose one to turn into a CD cover. In my case Vampire Weekend’s album covers had always fascinated me so I decided to turn my picture into one of them. I processed the negative taken with the pinhole and digitalized it to modify the color and add the name.

Since I finished high school graduating on Arts I found in them an endless source of inspiration and a real passion. I always tend to use them to inspire me but when I am asked to develop a project based on arts is when I truly enjoy the process of getting to know the artist and the methods he or she uses. In this chapter you will find projects inspired by different artists and also related to fashion, which sometimes crosses boundaries and becomes art too.

LARODECTUS GEOMETRICUS JOC’ART EXPOSITION
WOOD CARVING VOLUM 2011
In 2011 my Volume class was asked to participate in a project with Barcelona’s School of Architects in which the artist Joaquin Torres Garcia was honored. Each group or student had to design and build a toy. My project was inspired by the work of Louise Bourgeoise, especially by the famous Maman. I decided to turn Maman into a game in which you had to achieve a goal: make the spider stand still. When turning it into a wooden toy I was inspired by the work of Haroshi who recycles old skateboards to sculpt and creates beautiful color combinations mixing natural and painted wood. As the final result turned better than expected I created a larger version of it that had 70 centimeters long legs and a huge body (see the picture above) so the exposition included both of them.

COLOR CUBE FASHION IS FUN - COLORS ARE TOO
COLLAGE DIBUIX DE REPRESENTACIÓ I INTERPRETACIÓ 15 CM2 2014
In this project the main character was the color. The objective was to ideate a cube that had each color on the chromatic circle and create relations in between the different faces of the cube that were according to the color relations such as the analogues. My creation was all about movement. You could fold the different faces to create not only a cube but different formal compositions that also allowed you to see different color relations and combinations. Each face was one color and the color came from pictures that had similar tones, all of them were pictures from fashion magazines and featured clothes from different collections and designers. It ended up being a fashion color palette to prove that all of them are used in some mesure.

JUANA LA LOCA WHEN ART MEETS FASHION The aim of this project was to create an artist book inspired after various visits to museums such as El Prado or El Reina Sofía in Madrid and the ARCO fair. I created a series of illustrations inspired on the painting by Francisco Pradilla Doña Juana la Loca. In them I mixed collage and watercolor and created visual images of women with confusing expressions similar to the ones in the original painting and then added a religious reference to it in an indirect way with the collage elements. I used pictures from fashion editorials as fashion is one of my passions and an endless source of inspiration for me. Creating from an artwork is something I really enjoy as it includes an intellectual concept consisting in paraphrasing the elements and meanings of an artwork into a new one.

In this assignment for the Design and Art History class we had to choose an artist and create an artwork inspired by one single aspect we found interesting about him. My workgroup choose Andy Warhol. After having taken under consideration all the information we read about him we were inspired by his methodology in which errors are welcomed and are the element that makes every print different and unique. We used coffee cups as molds and then poured the plaster inside. Secondly, we altered each cup so the final result would be different for every mold. To do so we used ink, paper, strokes or directly modified the vase for example crumpling it up or not removing it entirely. Our aim was to create pieces that felt like Warhol and to feel like him while making them.

Something that always draws my attention about workshops is the concept. Everything is about fast creation, you have no time to think twice about a decision and you learn to turn mistakes to opportunities. You probably learn about something you have no idea of and even more, you have physical prove of it. In this chapter I show two of the workshops I have done during this year, both of them in the graphic field but with different themes.

MADE IN ELISAVA LETTERPRESS WORKSHOP
RECYCLED PAPER, INK LETTERPRESS TECNIQUES II A3 2014
The bunkertype is a small basement in Barcelona turned into a printing workshop full of ancient printing methods -fully manual- and lead and wood types by Jesús Morentín a graphic designer who teaches in Elisava. In four hours me and two classmates were introduced to the manual printing world, how everything works, from the types to the way we should spread the ink and the letterpress technique. Then we could design our own poster and printed it right there. My final poster combined two inks and three elements, firstly I printed the small drawing in the back which is complex and has small details and then the typographic composition (which you can see above ready to get into the press). Also you can appreciate what the Bunkertype looks like.

VARIOUS TECHNIQUES PROJECTS III BOOK - A4 2014
THE NEW ART OF MAKING BOOKS The New Art of Making Books is a project curated by Danny Aldred from Winchester School of Art, he came into Elisava and we spent an evening in which our point of view upon books changed radically. In this workshop we were introduced to the text by Ulises Carri贸n to understand what the new art is. From that moment creation started. We only had six books from which we could scan pictures and unlimited supplies like, pens, markers and our imagination. After for ours creating each team had made a book, learnt a bit about binding and had generated some awesome artworks. Our book, titled GAM, was about speed, future, present and time in general. I have chosen the cover, which was based on manipulating the lamps and the BUS STOP NOW composition which explores the conceptual side of the topic.

In my creative process, sketching has always beezzn my magic trick. For me it is completely necessary to carry around a sketchbook to keep record of everything I see and I find interesting, also as a way to develop a project, experiment with new techniques or to improve my drawing skills. This final chapter is a compilation of some of my many sketches to show my different techniques and how I create on my own.
