Greetings everyone. In August, South African communities commemorate the role of women in the struggle for freedom and equality.
As women of all races gathered in Pretoria in 1956, the phrase “You Strike a Woman, you Strike a Rock” was born. Post SouthAfrican liberation, women still face a number of challenges, including rape and domestic violence.
We also get to know more about the women in Operations and what makes women in BATSA tick. DIY is a new feature aimed at giving you tips on quick fixes around your home which you – yes, you too, ladies – can benefit from.
I would like to invite all women and men of BATSA to pledge against rape and violence – particularly the violence targeted at women.
EHS remains one of the most critical issues for us and Devina (our New EHS Manager) explains why we all need to support EHS initiatives.
In this issue, we get to know more about a woman who keeps our reception warm, arguably the bestknown face on the Heidelberg site, Ms Charlotte Backhouse. When you walk past reception in the morning, please greet her with a smile.
Lastly, now that the gym is open and up and running, and summer is getting closer, I am waiting to see lots of sexy abs and curves ... lol ... but jokes aside, let’s all utilise the gym and live healthy life styles. See you around, Puleng

The vital role of the Quality Inspector
The Quality Campaign may be over but its spirit is alive on the factory floor. Those of us on the factory floor are well aware of our ‘powder blue brigade’ as they move purposefully from one machine to the next, playing their critical role in production. These are our vital quality inspectors, who work with manufacturing to see that there’s no compromise on product quality. Altogether, 23 quality inspectors deal with production quality issues, with manufacturing performance and process consistency.
4 | OurWorld
Historically, quality inspectors were seen as police officers, with the sole intention of finding fault, and not part of the manufacturing team. Understanding of their role was poor. At times, this led to great tension between quality inspectors and production crews, culminating in finger pointing, poor teamwork and communication, low morale, and disregard of some quality-control procedures. Before the new structure was implemented in May 2013, a project entitled “Q-Ground” (QA on the ground), aimed at providing hands-on support and integrating QA into production, was piloted for a few months.
After analysing performance during this period, QA and manufacturing management decided to implement the concept on a business-asusual basis. During the project, MQI (increase) and nonconforming products (decrease) improved dramatically.
Old structure: Shifts Laboratory Production Floor A 2 3 B 2 3 C 2 3
FPI 2 2 2
PMD 1 1
New structure: Shifts Laboratory Production Floor FPI PMD SMD FMD / BM A 1 3 1 2 1 B 1 3 1 2 1 C 1 3 1 2
With smarter laboratory testing processes, quality inspectors were taken out of the laboratory and into production. SMD Cells are now assigned to the quality inspectors on the production floor, to promote the feeling of ‘belonging’ to a cell, aimed at promoting teamwork and accountability for the results of each machine.
As a result, the responsibilities of production floor quality inspectors were revised, as shown in the table below. Topic MQI
Blocked and rejected
Consumer complaint Change-overs
Responsibilities Support and monitor physical parameters (Improve Q scores) Support production with inspections (including material) Support production with inspection procedures Shift hand over to address quality incidents Determine cut-off points Maintain B&R database Drive action plans and awareness together with production
Send correct specification to machine Full involvement and support during brand and shift change overs Sign-off change over according to procedure Audits One Audit per cell / day (depends on challenges) Drive continuous improvement and action non-compliances Visual Perform FPI after every maintenance and during product/machine sig assessments Championship Business as usual roles
Benefits of having quality inspectors in manufacturing cells
• Improved teamwork – common goals/driving for the same results • Relationship-building between QA and production crews • Improved communication • A dedicated quality contact for cell managers • Availability of QA in each cell • Knowledge and skills sharing between QA and manufacturing • Improved MQI scores • Reduced NCPs • Fewer dissatisfied consumers!
In summary, positive results are being achieved through combined efforts (QA & Production). We are realising that quality is not a department, but a priority of every BATSA employee so that we can produce superior products and satisfy every consumer moment.
The perception of Quality Inspectors being Police officers is slowly but surely fading away, as production personnel embrace the advantages of the revised approach. The “Us and them” mentality between QA and SMD has decreased and effective teamwork is steadily becoming a reality.

Global guidance on tobacco waste methodology
Celebrating our
W men
In the past, BAT endmarkets had used different calculation methodologies to report tobacco waste.
During 2011, a project to review the current process was begun, with the goal of globally standardizing tobacco-waste methodology. Heidelberg Operations was part of the team that reviewed the process and provided valuable inputs throughout the project. The first draft of the new methodology was implemented in Q1 2012. 6 | OurWorld
During November 2012 the global team did an assessment of the new methodology and implemented additional guidance in the form of instructions, as well as a standard tobacco-waste template. These changes were successfully implemented at Heidelberg Operations during Q4 2012. A subsequent review was conducted and at the end of June 2013 the global project team confirmed that Heidelberg Operations is now fully compliant with the global standard. We now have both a better understanding of our tobacco waste and a valuable tool for comparison with other BAT endmarkets. This will provide an opportunity for finding synergies and identifying areas to improve. A further success was the

alignment of the Zimbabwe and Mozambique factories to the methodology , working to ensure that SAA Operations complies with the global standard. We have also assisted BAT Nigeria with their implementation.

How to stay motivated at work
motivation
No one can motivate you except you. So this article won’t solve your problems. But it will give you tips on staying motivated by doing some simple things.
1. Take 10 minutes break for every 50 minutes of work
Even machines need rest. After some time banging away at the computer or whatever it is that you do, you can feel tired and dull. That’s when you should take that 10-minute break. I’ve been doing it successfully for years.
2. Use your 10 minututeesbrewiakseyouly’re

4. Read something interesting
3. Look at what you’ve completed
A quick way to stay motivated when you’ve been working hard and you’re getting tired is to review what you’ve done so far. Ticking off your to-do list will remind you of just how much you’ve accomplished. You’ll find it gets you going again.
Try reading some interesting articles. Something motivating, perhaps. It works, and don’t be embarrassed. I know people who think others might laugh if they reveal that they read motivational books. But there’s nothing wrong in that. Just because it doesn’t work for some doesn’t mean you can’t do it. The important thing is not to get distracted, and you’ll find yourself freshly motivated.
6. Clear your desk
5. Take a walk to the kitchen
While you do these simple things, you’ll have less on your mind. You’ll be more productive and energetic dealing with bigger issues that may bother you, for example, outside of work. Here’s how: 18 | OurWorld
Get up, stretch, and briskly make off to the kitchen for a cup of coffee or biscuit. The walk will revive you and a quick chat – again, do not get distracted – is a good diversion from the boring proposals you were doing.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility We all know that Safety is everyone’s responsibility but how many of us really practice this concept daily. When you look into the mirror you are looking at the person that is responsible for your own safety.
Looking back to our work environment, all accidents that have occurred over the past years can be linked to the above reasons and states. So by each of us just focusing daily on the above 8 factors, we are already taking a step towards a safer accident free life. Here are some things specifically at BATSA that you need to be aware of and comply to. Should you notice someone not complying with these, the responsible thing to do is stop, inform and correct the person. A lot of work has been done on the main ring road to segregate vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrian walkways and stop signs have been implemented. As pedestrians in this high traffic area, please always walk on the dedicated pedestrian walkway and stop and check first when hearing vehicles approaching.
Make use of the dedicated pedestrian crossings and walkways: Drivers in this area, always stick to the speed limit and avoid rushing and complacency. Note! Forklift speed is walking speed.
If you look into the reasons as to why these accidents have happened worldwide the following 4 categories sum up the main cause to any accident: Eyes not on task e.g. driving and texting
By Devina Piyarlall – EHS Manager During one’s lifetime from birth until your current status, you have probably experienced some kind of accident. Some minor, others maybe major. 20 | OurWorld
The following 4 are identified worldwide to be the 4 main states a person is in when an accident happens: Rushing Frustration Fatigue Complacency
Mind not on task e.g. walking and not paying attention to road activities and conditions Losing your balance, traction and grip i.e. no 3 point contact when descending stairs Putting yourself in the line of fire e.g. running in front of a car to cross the road
Use your seatbelt always!! The company enforces that all forklift drivers are to use seatbelts at all times when driving a forklift. Wearing a seat belt will save a life. We have implemented some improvement to the contractor management programme this month. The following changes that have been made require support from all departments in order to achieve effective implementation and to minimize the contractor unsafe acts and incidents. Firstly, an EHS agreement document between BATSA and the contractor must be completed by the contractor and submitted to EHS department prior to commencement on any work on site. It is critical that all supporting documents requested be included i.e. letter of good standing, risk assessment etc.
Once a contractor has been approved, contractor works permit must be completed on entrance to site. This will be issued by security. On completion of this document it is then signed off by key stakeholders and contact persons before commencement of any work. Any contactor found not complying with the above shall not be allowed to work on site. It is each departments and persons responsibility to ensure contractors are managed closely and don’t add any risks to our work environment and employees
All the above mentioned initiatives are done with the concept of the kindergarten approach i.e. if a child is left free in the factory, they will not be exposed to any risk and injury.
What is this? Continuous improvement is usually impossible to maintain without a structured management system in place. ISO 14001 – deals with Environmental management and is an International certifiable system. OHSAS 18001 – deals with Health and Safety and is an International certifiable system. There is no international (ISO) standard for health and safety yet developed. Both systems may be audited, certificated and registered as compliant with International requirements. Both these standards are based on continual improvement and require a “process approach” from all.
What do you need to know and do? • The company is revising the site EHS policy to be in line with the 14001 and 18001 requirements. Once this is finalized and approved it will be made available to all and shall be published. We all need to commit to this policy and know where it is displayed on site. • All employees will undergo an awareness training session so attendance for all is compulsory • Employees and EHS committees to be part of the risk assessment process and to know what activities they are involved in that may create an EHS risk and what controls are put in place to mitigate or reduce the risk. Controls identified need to be implemented at all times • Other specific involvement will be highlighted in the awareness training sessions Let’s all commit to Personal Safety. We all need to strive to leave work in the condition we arrived, with two eyes and ten fingers, so we can go home safely to our loved ones!

My career started in my final year of tertiary studies when I called a packaging company requesting them to sponsor my SRC election campaign – they were too kind and opted to give me an opportunity in their graduate program. I loved the adrenalin in their Supply Chain Function and applied for the next position that came. In 10 years I’d like to see myself giving back to this business – in a role in which I can contribute to the strategic decisions, providing

Identity theft and SIM card cloning –
Someone wants to steal your life.
What to do when you are a victim of identity theft: • Report it to the police immediately. • Contact the fraud units of all credit bureaus with your information. • Close all your accounts and get new accounts and PIN numbers. • Notify your credit providers and close all accounts including the accounts the thief has opened.
SIM card cloning:
by Peter Tsele Identity theft is a crime, a kind of ‘fraud’ in which someone pretends to be you by taking on your identity. ‘Fraud’ is when someone tells lies, or pretends that something is true when it’s not, in a way that is against the law and can cause harm or loss to another person.
30 | OurWorld
Identity theft: In South Africa, identity theft is very common for lots of reasons. It is called a whitecollar crime as it is done in the course of business or dealings in money, not with actual violence. Criminals use identity theft (often stolen ID books or bankcards) to get credit with many companies. People even forge death certificates to claim insurances using the identity of living people. Desperate to get employment in South
Africa, non-South Africans sometimes acquire false identity documents. Sometimes this becomes ‘identity theft’, when they forge others’ identity documents so they can claim social grants. Say someone suddenly discovers that they are refused credit from any institution. They’re blacklisted but they don’t know why. Often, someone has stolen their identity, used it to get credit – and has never paid it off.
A new scam is operating in South Africa in which someone’s cellphone SIM card will be ‘cloned’ (an exact, working copy made), with the cellphone number copied for fraud purposes. The way it’s done is that the syndicate will send you SMSs that you need to reply to and so they get your cellphone number. Simple! They send you text messages promising prizes, gift cards, iPhones or cheap mortgages if you just click on a site. People are easily taken in because they trust their personal phone, believing it’s still free of spam and scams. The syndicate will send SMSs to all your contacts (using data stored on your SIM card) telling them that you were in an accident and need your airtime topped up.
or in a competition held by a well-known company. Call and claim your prize, they tell you, then ask you to pay more to get your prize Sometimes they might call your friends, telling them that you were arrested and need money for paying bail or bribing officers to let you go. Your friends do what they were told before they discover the scam.

Someone out there is trying to steal your identity so be aware! Here’s what to do if you receive an unsolicited text message: • Report it immediately. Forward the text to 7726 (which spells out SPAM on most phones). That will inform a service operated by the telephone companies, which identifies and shuts down scams on their networks.
• Block the number (though the fraudsters change numbers often).
• File a complaint with your service provider.
• Only download smartphone applications from reputable stores, and even then, be sure to read the terms of service closely.
• Delete the message and don’t click on any URLs.
• Do not text “STOP” in reply. It will tell the bad guys that the number is live and encourage more targeting of that phone.
Another scam is that your cellphone number has won a large amount of money from a service provider, OurWorld | 31

02 01 Changing the Yale lock on a door Here are 3 basic DIY home maintenance tips for you. They will help you save money and will teach you a thing or two! But remember: if the job seems too complicated call a professional to do it!
• Unscrew the screws around the ‘block part’ of the lock [the part on the inside of the door].
Before you start this job, measure the pane you want to replace. Measure the height and width of the frame and not the glass part that you can see. Remember that the glass extends beyond the opening you look through.
• Metal frame: remove old putty with a screwdriver or scraper and a hammer. • Wooden frame: undo the wooden slats with a screwdriver and hammer, taking care not to break the wood. • Remove the glass pieces and scrape all old putty off. • Take some new putty out of the packet and work it with your hands until it becomes pliable. Roll it between your hands to form a long, thin sausage. Press this into the corner of the frame. This acts
• Remove the barrel front from the front side of the door.
• Screw the ‘block part’ of the lock back onto the door. • Test with the new key whilst the door is open.
• Now firmly press the glass panel into the putty, making sure the glass covers the opening. • Apply the rest of the putty to fill the space between the glass and the end of the frame. Press it firmly into the corners and sides. • Using the scraper, angle the putty between the glass and the edge of the window frame. • Once dry – paint the putty.

The first step is to make sure that you have a water and waste connection. In newly built houses the plumbers usually make provision for an extra tap in the kitchen. It is usually situated under the work counter. If not, you might have to get a plumber in to install one.
• Replace with new barrel by sliding it into the existing hole.
• Replace the ‘block part’ of the lock, taking care that the lever lines up and slides into the small hole.
as a seal between the frame and the glass. Do this right around the frame.
Connecting a washing machine
• Unscrew the bracket holding the barrel part of the lock.
• Screw the new barrel into place via the bracket.
32 | OurWorld
Replacing a window pane
Water Inlet: • You can use the tap that’s situated over the sink, but make sure it has a thread on the outlet, much like the tap in the garden that takes the fitting for the hosepipe. • Next, make sure that the highpressure hose fits onto the tap. This hose should be supplied with the machine. • Connect the hose onto the machine, as indicated in the installation manual. Then connect the hose onto the tap. Open the tap and check for any leaks. If you
do have a leak, try to secure the hose using a shifting spanner. You might have to use some ‘plumbers tape’ to put around the tap thread, to create a better seal. • If you are installing a washing machine and dishwasher, ask the hardware store for a ‘Y’ connection that can take both the hose of the washing machine and the dishwasher. Waste outlet: • If your machine is installed under the work counter, you will have to have a special drainage outlet
fitting under your sink, as in the picture. If not ask a plumber to connect one. NOTE: the drainpipe has to be at the same height as the top of the machine. If the pipe is on the floor, the water will run out of the machine when it fills up. • If you machine is standing next to the sink, you can hook the outlet/ drain pipe, onto the sink, using the special ‘U’ bend that is supplied with the machine.

Keeping healthy this winter
Best Winter Fruit Fix The season’s hot hue is purple – for your plate, anyway. Plums and aubergines, blueberries and grapes may help you keep your mind sharp as you age. The purple produce is rich in polyphenols, antioxidants that may block the production of toxins that can damage the brain and other organs. To guard against where-did-I-put-my-keys syndrome, try to get two servings a day (one serving equals half a cup of blueberries, one large plum or a cup and a half of grapes).
02
In winter the days get shorter and as the temperature starts to drop there is a greater tendency to stay indoors where it is warm, be less active and eat comfort foods. Winter can also bring increased risks of illness, so here are our top tips for keeping healthy this winter:
Superfoods
Healthy eating Eating nutritious foods such as fruits and vegetables can help keep your immune system strong. It is also important to keep hydrated in winter, so ensure you drink plenty of water.
Get a health check
In winter, colds, flu and gastroenteritis can cause disruption to your home, social and work life. Many of these common infectious diseases are spread by germs on our hands. You can reduce the risk of getting sick or passing infections on to others by washing your hands, wiping down frequently touched surfaces, and covering your coughs and sneezes with a tissue.
It’s a good idea to see your doctor for a regular health check even if you are currently feeling fit and healthy. Regular health checks and screening tests can help you to stay healthy by finding health problems at an early stage and help to prevent and detect serious illness.
be active
Flu vaccination
Being active for 30 minutes every day can help you feel more energetic, healthier and can even make your world look better and brighter.
05 Sleep well
A good night’s sleep is essential for your health and wellbeing. Lack of sleep can have a serious effect on your immune system, making you more vulnerable to catching colds.

Wash, Wipe, Cover
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a highly contagious infection that is more serious than the common cold. Annual vaccination against seasonal flu can reduce your chances of getting the flu and can also reduce the severity of flu symptoms if you do catch the flu.

07 Reason To Drink More Water Water keeps your body running – it helps regulate your body temperature, keeps your joints cushioned, protects your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues, and gets rid of waste through sweating and peeing.
08
There are plenty of foods you can eat that will quell even the nastiest of germs. We all know about the amazing restorative properties of food and drinks such as chicken noodle soup, hot tea, and orange juice. Here are a few surprising additions to your germfighting repertoire: 1. Herbs and spices have a high level of antioxidants, which are proven immune boosters. Oregano in particular is mentioned because it has special antimicrobial properties: oregano leaves are often used as a wrap for food to help prevent spoilage. 2. Peppers: Red bell peppers have twice the amount of vitamin C per gram as many of the vitamin C-containing fruits. Despite some criticism of vitamin C’s cold fighting properties, it’s been proven to diminish the severity and duration of colds. Hot peppers contain capsaicin - the compound responsible for making your nose run and clearing your sinuses.
3. Garlic: Crushed garlic contains a chemical called allicin – an antibiotic and decongestant. Unfortunately, this chemical is broken down during cooking, so for the best results your garlic should be eaten raw or added to food right before serving. 4. Seafood: Once again it’s the antioxidants in seafood that help boost immune system function. Omega 3 fatty acids are powerful flu fighters and antiinflammatory. 5. Yogurt: Though you should never eat dairy during bouts of vomiting, yogurt promotes healthy bacteria growth in your stomach. This is good news because over 70 percent of your body’s immune function comes from the digestive tract. 6 . Chocolate: A dark chocolate with no less than 70 percent cocoa contains theobromine - a cough suppressant. In fact, two ounces of dark chocolate will deliver the same results as your typical dose of cough medicine!

What to do if you catch colds or flu People think colds and flu are caused by germs. Actually, the cause is a virus. There are about 200 cold viruses around and maybe 3 different flu viruses. So it seems almost a miracle if you don’t get a cold every winter. The problem is that viruses are more difficult to fight off than germs because they aren’t affected by antibiotics, so a doctor can’t just cure the cold with pills. So, you’ve just got to make the best of it. But there are some things that will help.
Familiar symptoms?
Great stuff!
Winter food for healthy kids.
Make sure growing bodies and immune systems get the winter nourishment they need.
• Vitamin C helps fight coughs and colds. Oranges are in season, bursting with it. Naartjies are good and so is kiwi fruit. Or hand out a celery stick to chew! •N eeded: nourishing food. So don’t overcook their vegetables, because the veggies lose their vitamins and other nourishing elements. A little bit crisp is good! •M ake them meaty soups with natural flu-fighting anti-oxidants from veggies like tomatoes, carrots and red-peppers. Nothing is lost in soup! •O ne-pot casseroles and stews also preserve all the veggie goodness. Top their food with chopped tomato, grated cheddar, avocado or crushed corn chips! •S erve fish once, or even better, twice a week (especially oily fish) for omega 6 and all sorts of healthy benefits!

We all know these symptoms of winter colds and flu: • coughing • sneezing • blocked nose • sore throat • headache • slight temperature If these are your only symptoms your doctor probably can’t do much, and you can save some money. Instead, your pharmacist can recommend medicines that will lessen the symptoms, helping you feel better while your cold runs its course.

First your immune system Make sure your immune system is at its strongest to fight the cold effectively and maybe shorten it. It’s important not to get tired; to rest well and sleep eight hours a night if you can, eat good food and don’t go hungry, and drink lots of fluids (except large amounts of alcohol, which could have the opposite effect!). Keep warm. With fever or pain, tablets containing paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen can bring relief. If your nose is congested, inhaling steam from a bowl of boiled water containing a decongestant (ask your pharmacist) will help. With your pharmacist’s advice you’ll have some success in lessening the symptoms. In most cases antibiotics will be ineffective. However, if you develop a very high temperature, or are worried about your symptoms, don’t take chances, see your doctor.

We’re very lucky at BAT. Charlotte Backhouse is the first person you’ll meet as you enter our reception. Charlotte has firm ideas on how she presents herself and BAT to the world, and to her fellow employees. She says a calm, down-to-earth attitude, friendly and professional at all times, is how she manages, even when she so often has to explain that in a factory environment not everyone can have their own private extension. As a mother, Charlotte loves her job for the regular hours that make it easy to balance work and home, and with one son, to care for her family. She believes each parent should take their responsibilities seriously for a happy family life, providing the right sort of discipline for children to prosper in the community and later in work life. And she gets good advice from her best friend, a “career woman with vision”.
Life also includes fun, in Charlotte’s case relaxation with friends on a farm outside Heidelberg, country and pop music, and ardent support for the Blue Bulls (especially when Victor Matfield and Wynand Olivier were playing!). She likes making mosaics, knitting and crocheting.
Charlotte likes to work at BAT because it’s a world-class company, yet still listens to your side of the story.
“Do not keep things to yourself ” she advises colleagues. For BAT, she wishes success in combating illicit trade, and becoming the biggest cigarette manufacturer in the world.
She’s proud, she says, to work at a leading international company.

“Recent events have shown us that we are a single, interdependent world. But the burden of any world crisis falls most heavily on the developing countries and on their peoples. And everything that we have learnt tells us that it is the children who will be feeling the harshest and the most permanent effects. Can we therefore claim in all earnestness to love our children – the children of the North and the South – if we do not give the most serious attention to preventing a world that has more than enough resources from dividing ever more deeply between rich and poor?”
