il and gas companies are looking forward to decreasing accidents and fatalities in the workplace but how far can they really go?
According to a research made by the NIOSH National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) Oil and Gas Sector Council in the US, there were 602 incidents of accidents in the oil and gas extraction sector that resulted in multiple injuries including amputation. Occupational hazards are inevitable but organizations are calling out for extended support and prevention for the welfare of engineers and other employees. Safety is one of the major corporate obligations, however, it is a battle that companies keep on losing. Whilst there are different methods done by corporations to keep a zero percent on this toll, it seems that the list will keep getting bigger if companies will not innovate with their ways dealing with the said dilemma. And when innovation is said, it means a technological leap. How come that engineering is one of the industries behind the development of robotics, yet it has not fully embraced the potential it can make in reducing the risks in most of its sectors. Today has seen the possibilities of robotics as one of the world’s greatest problem-solvers if and only if companies will invest in it.
Transformational Robotics A S T E P-U P I N T H E O I L A N D G A S INDUSTRY
Yes, humans are always susceptible to harm even though how much they try to stay away. But we can never ignore the fact that robotics can aid humans in the workplace which is much cost-efficient and reliable in every way. A hard pill to swallow perhaps, but it will definitely do good more than faulty.
With the rise of the robotics in the oil and gas industry, there is only a safer and brighter future we 2
can hope for.
More than that, highly environmental robots are being developed. They are not only made to address hazardous labors in the field but can also contribute to lessening the footprint of the conventional systems. With the rise of the robotics in the oil and gas industry, there is only a safer and brighter future we can hope for. In this feature, we will know how robotics is transforming the oil and gas industry. Robots, as a multi-faceted technology, can become a permanent solution to the ever-changing needs and increasing demands of this generation. Be amazed by
what these robots can contribute in engineering by flipping through the pages. And as a bonus for this month’s release, we are to give you a peek featuring different facets of the life of an engineer— starring hard facts in the professional work environment, life hacks and useful leadership guide. You wouldn’t also want to miss tips on crafting the most effective engineering resume while finding out and landing one of 2018’s highest paying tech jobs. Look at What These Robots Can Do
Oil and gas companies have ever since been struggling to keep their operational costs low. Efficient and reliable work systems require manpower partnered with high-class equipment. But these investments can cost large cuts on profits that is why many companies have already admitted their need for robotics.
Potentially, these metals and wires could function in a more complex manner than humans and can be made to withstand different working conditions. Companies can save resources on manpower and acquisition of complementary tools and machines if they will venture on robots that can do the

Yes, fear is still lingering that many people might lose their jobs once these robots take over human operations. Shifting to automation will undeniably lessen the workforce but it will also open another opportunity for the robotic industry to boom and hire people for manufacture. Though this scenario may still 26
be under scrutiny, the benefits it will bring is still more noteworthy than the setbacks it may pose.
There is so much proof to be laid to indicate that the robotic revolution in the oil and gas sector is really happening. But still,
there is much effort to be exerted to keep it consistent and more competent. Despite the doubts, the engineering community will remain open to new possibilities as always.

The new B-DETECTION PLUS Continuous monitoring of your breathing air quality
BAUER’s B-DETECTION PLUS provides operators with the maximum-security concerning health and legal liability issues.
The online gas measurement system B-DETECTION monitors the quality of the breathing air produced. It is available in two versions: PLUS i, fully integrated into the compressor system, and the standalone PLUS s for wall mounting. Automatic, continuous and outstandingly reliable. Compliance with the limit values of the DIN EN 12021:2014 Breathing Air Standard can be monitored at all times by checking the display of the B-CONTROL MICRO compressor control unit. The system measures the oxygen, CO and CO2 content of the air, with optional measurement of absolute humidity and residual oil (VOCs)1 in compliance with DIN EN 12021:2014 (Breathing Air Standard). When limit values are exceeded, the unit displays a visual warning and shuts down the system before contaminated air can pass into the cylinders being filled. Any infringements of limit values are logged by the B-CONTROL MICRO system control unit and can easily be exported as an Excel file using a standard SD card. In cases where limit values are briefly exceeded, an automatic flush valve (optional) discharges contaminated air to the outside without interrupting operation of the system. Measurement uses high-quality smart sensors with continuous selfcheck function, ensuring users can rely on the accuracy of the measurement results. An optional humidity membrane can be added to maximise sensor life.

The partnership represents the first time that ADNOC has brought an international strategic partner to acquire a direct equity stake in one of its existing services businesses. ADNOC Drilling is the largest drilling company in the Middle East and the sole provider of drilling rigs and associated services to ADNOC Groupcompanies. ADNOC Drilling also possesses decades of market experience and detailed knowledge of the UAE’s subsurface, enabling reduced risk in drilling activities. With more than 40 years of operations in the country, BHGE has deep domain expertise and a proven track record of solving complex drilling challenges through innovative technical solutions. Ongoing access and support from BHGE’s market-leading technology and equipment portfolio will help accelerate ADNOC Drilling’s ongoing growth and development of a broader product offering, including drilling and well completion services. This partnership structure aligns the interests of both ADNOC and BHGE in driving greater productivity and efficiency while increasing returns.
The partnership is expected to generate predictable, long-term revenue streams and growth in the market for both companies through a mutually-beneficial, attractive commercial structure, pre-defined work plans and future dividends. ADNOC Drilling and BHGE will set up an advisory board with representation from both companies to oversee the implementation and ongoing operations, and BHGE

will join ADNOC Drilling’s Board of Directors.
The partnership will enable ADNOC to capture more value from every barrel of oil it produces as it plans to grow its conventional drilling activity by 40 percent by 2025 and substantially ramp up the number of its unconventional wells, in line with its 2030 smart growth strategy. ADNOC Drilling will remain the sole rig provider to ADNOC Group Companies and capitalize on ADNOC’s growing upstream activity by deploying its new integrated offering to capture up to 30 percent of the drilling and completion market over the next three years, as it demonstrates increasing drilling efficiencies and improved customer service levels.
working relationship and who shares ADNOC’s long term vision and values. This unique partnership with BHGE comes at an important time in the drilling needs of Abu Dhabi as ADNOC grows its conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon resources and as we see future potential for further regional growth. It will ensure we will be able to better service our upstream growth while capturing and retaining greater value.
The two partners will be able to leverage ADNOC Drilling’s existing rig fleet capacity with limited capital expenditure outlay. The partnership will gain significant new business opportunities, including the potential to offer integrated drilling services beyond the UAE’s borders.
“The partnership forms an important building block of ADNOC’s 2030 smart growth strategy as we continue to drive operational efficiency and performance, and unlock even more value from every barrel we produce. The combined capabilities and expertise from this partnership will create greater drilling efficiencies and faster well completion times, generate attractive returns and enable the transfer of know-how and access to technology. Importantly, it will also drive job creation and economic growth, as well as maintain a healthy level of competition in the dynamic UAE oilfield services market.”
H.E. Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State and ADNOC Group CEO, said: “We are very pleased to be partnering with BHGE in ADNOC Drilling, in line with our wise leadership’s guidance to create and enhance value across our business by forming strategic partnerships. We chose BHGE after a rigorous and competitive process as a partner with whom we have a long-standing
This partnership is another important step in ADNOC’s group-wide transformation and value creation program that addresses the evolving energy landscape and helps ensure ADNOC remains a resilient and flexible company able to take full advantage of market opportunities – from upstream to downstream. ships and co-investments as well as the more proactive management of ADNOC’s portfolio of businesses and allocation of capital.
“This partnership brings together BHGE and ADNOC, backed by a close and long working relationship. We are very pleased to take a minority stake in ADNOC Drilling to jointly develop and further grow the company’s technical capabilities, market access and value. In a unique way, it allows us to drive predictable revenue streams and long-term growth for both companies and lets us invest in a stable, reliable and secure market environment. Supported by BHGE’s leading technology and service portfolio, ADNOC Drilling will enable ADNOC to unlock significant value from their untapped resources, while building local capabilities and accelerating overall market growth,” said BHGE Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Lorenzo Simonelli. “The transaction significantly increases our activity in the region and demonstrates our unique ability to create value for our customers and shareholders through innovative commercial arrangements, partnerships and leading technology solutions.”
The UAE is located in one of the world’s largest hydrocarbon super-basins with significant potential to tap its undeveloped reservoirs and further develop its existing resources. Realizing this potential, alongside the ongoing growth and development of ADNOC Drilling, will provide more opportunities for local third-party service providers to compete for and support ADNOC’s expanding integrated drilling and ancillary service requirements. The transformation of ADNOC Drilling will improve the integration of UAE private sector service providers, as well as create new career opportunities for ADNOC employees and support domestic economic growth. The part-

nership reinforces ADNOC’s in-country value creation strategy and demonstrates BHGE’s longstanding commitment to the country.

GET ACQUIANTED WITH THE
“Generation G” ENGINEERS
In this age driven by enormous demand for talent, meet the new generation of engineers that will patch the source gap.
T
he internet age is an ever-evolving era. It goes without saying that if you do not chase for innovation, you will be left behind. This unending race has also fueled a massive change in our lifestyle that altogether shaped an entirely new breed of mankind. Thus, causing chaotic disagreements between the generations that overlap. Today, discussions over work ethics of the millennial generation and Gen Z often lead to negative criticisms without giving them a chance. Engineers of the said generation share the same prejudice from 44

employers who do not properly understand its disruptive potential. But they must understand, that this generation is extensively growing and will soon inherit our lands. And even before you miss that chance to appreciate this remarkable human resource at hand, allow us to introduce the global generation of engineers or the Generation G that will adequately address the skills gap your company needs in order to stand out.
often lead to negative criticisms without giving them a chance.
Advantages of Engineers that are Multicultural You can’t call it innovation unless it addresses massive transformation. And you cannot create a revolution if you’re not willing to transcend cultural limitations. Gen G engineers are inherently multicultural and are very
L E A D E R S H I P
S T O R I E S
accepting and tolerant towards diversity—be it racially, ethnically, religiously and gender-based. When traveling they aim to live like locals, looking for authentic experiences in an effort to learn from the
culture and people around them. This skill is innate among them and enhances their ability to appreciate, rather than judge, other cultures. Now, that is the perfect quality you need when you hire an
engineer to work in a team. In fact, Harvard Business Review recently highlighted a project that researched performance on multicultural teams. The study resulted to a conclusion that more creative ideas
can be driven from a much diverse team than from a homogenous one. But inherent barriers like the presence of cultural norms often lead to ineffective coordination and misunderstanding when the team is diverse in composition. But Gen G engineers are known to be multicultural brokers who possess deep experience in empathetic team participation that leads to a greater team performance—a powerful tool in fostering innovation and non-stop progression.
How to Attract Gen G Engineers? With careful thought, you should now understand the value of this new breed of engineers. The challenge, therefore is how to keep them around. As we all know, this generation can be extremely volatile. So, unless you do something they’ll just slip away with all their ideas with them. First, you need to make an effort not to always antagonize them. Open up your heart and mind into considering the environment they have grown up. Constantly challenge them and harness their overflowing curiosity to bring forth benefits for the company. While doing so, see to it that their needs are also met.
46
Gen G engineers also seek out opportunities that allow them to translate their passion into purpose. Encourage them to do volunteering and social entrepreneurship while aligning it with the company’s core values and principles.
Welcome to the Future We have wasted enough time deliberating which generation
should be hailed the best. But this age is rapidly evolving and we need to act fast in order to survive. Don’t drive away the present generation along with their talents. We need them now not because prior generations pale in comparison but because they are the future.

Overcoming the Toughest Job Interview Questions for Engineers
Bring your game face on and learn to answer the most difficult job interview questions.
Y
ou’re one step towards landing on that dream job you so eagerly want— the only thing that’s keeping you from it is that interview door and the dread of responding to those hard-hitting questions. Engineers especially the more introverted ones are often denied the chance to get the job they so desire despite their very impressive resumes just because they failed miserably during the interview round. But fret not, you can nail even the toughest questions when you prepared beforehand. Dr. Thomas J. Denham, a career counselor at Careers in Transition LLC in Colonie, New York stressed out that the interview portion is indeed an elimination process to weed out those who are not worthy of the position. For an employer, it serves as the last window period to have a glimpse on the applicant’s true nature so that he won’t wind up with the wrong hire. And so, for an engineer like you struggling to finally get the job this time around, Denham offers you some advice to answer the toughest interview questions around.
48
1. What is your biggest weakness? Questions like these trigger a mental block. And as an engineer posing to have a sterling mind, we don’t want that.
Questions like these, trigger a mental block. And as an engineer posing to have a sterling mind, we don’t want that. According to Denham, this question is in fact thrown to rattle the applicant into admitting weaknesses that may cause him the position he wants. As brilliant escape, try responding with: “I have a tendency to say yes and get overcommitted.” This is then to be followed with an example of how you are working on prioritizing and setting personal limits. Remember not to draw negative attention to yourself through weaknesses. An
interview should always resemble a majestic display of your strengths.
2. What salary do you think you deserve? Yes, indeed. This is one of the question you’ve been itching to ask since you walk through the office door. But, Denham says, “The person who states the salary is the loser.” He followed by explaining, that if you are the first to throw out a number, the number you give could be less than what the employer was planning to pay. It’s a dangerous trap so wait for the employer to give a range, and when it does ask you for a figure you expect to be mak49
L E A D E R S H I P
S T O R I E S
ing, choose a salary that is higher than the median they provide. To be safe, fair advice is to not talk about salary on the first interview.
3. Why should I hire you? This is the moment you’ve rehearsed a million times for. It’s time to show your cards and prove to him that you own the title and the job. But before that, review your resume and pick three to five things that you think makes you outstanding and back them with facts. Denham added, “The notion is that past performance is always the best predictor of future performance.”
4. What didn’t you like about your last job? Reserve your anger and chill out. Take a deep breathe before you impulsively step into another trap. The employer asks this question to fish for answers that would then
50
again hint through a weakness. So instead Denham advises you answer this way, “I did not feel my responsibilities were challenging enough.” Then the employer will feel confident about you.
5. Where do you see yourself in three to five years? I know what you’re thinking. “How on earth would I know that?” or better yet, “I’m living in the present so, let’s forget about the future for once.” These answers are definitely a fall out. It’s basically like giving the employer an idea that you do not have any sort of plans or direction in life. According to Denham, you can try a response like, “I’ve done a lot of self-assessment, and what I’ve learned about myself is that I want to make a commitment to this career and I want to build my career here.” That should be enough. Job interview or not, as an engineer you will have to face a lot
of situations in your life when you needed to speak up. You have to be as quick as you can and throw the tides on your side. Often times, practice is just the secret sauce in every triumph. However, honesty will always forge a more lasting work relationship that will make you desirable for who you truly are. At the end of the day, getting that job still requires a tiny bit of luck.
