uilding mass vaccination sites for COVID-19 is more complex than people think. The space to be used need to be huge enough to accommodate crowds without compromising the safety of the staff and the people, easily accessible to the general public, and have basic amenities like parking spaces. So far, the US, UK, Germany, and Israel have already started orchestrating and setting up mass vaccination sites hub. In Berlin, the government made use of two airport terminals, an ice-skating rink, a velodrome, and a trade-fair hall, where they will administer the shots. In the UK, the Epsom Downs Racecourse located south of London has opened in January, along with six other hubs that are operated by different trusts of the National Health Service (NHS). Recently, the U.K. government set up ten more sites, including Lancashirebased Blackburn Cathedral. In Bristol, the Ashton Gate Stadium have been transformed into a vaccination center as early as December, thanks to the help of the military. On the other hand, mass vaccination facilities in the US are undergoing assembly in Fenway Park in Boston, Citi Field in New York, and outside

Constructing Mass Vaccination Centers Disneyland in California. President Joe Biden has also pledged to deliver a hundred million shots in his first 100 days in office. He recently released a 200-page national strategy document in mid-January, outlining a range of efforts to accelerate production and distribution that includes creating “as many venues for vaccination as needed.” Italy has also joined the race of building mass vaccination hubs as it overcomes the vaccine resistance with style. Last December, the government announced a plan of creating a network of 1,500 vaccination pavilions set up in town squares. Other Italian inoculation centers are taking advantage of the country’s cultural venues. For instance, Turin plans to transform a portion of the 10th-century Castello di Rivoli, which now serves as a museum of contemporary art, into a vaccination hub. This will be the same case for the London Science Museum, as well.

hen businesses invest in HVAC equipment there can be a number of benefits from cost savings to efficiencies that help a business perform better from an operational standpoint. Which why it’s important to keep up a maintenance schedule to ensure equipment performance and prevent unnecessary operating expenses. LG Electronics (LG) has developed the VRF System Maintenance service, to provide services that meet customer needs and help provide continuous customer care. With improved reliability, standardized inspection and improvement guides LG’s service team can provide better service to meet and exceed expectations for customer satisfaction.

20

With a basic package, businesses can benefit from three key services: Inspection, Cleaning and Replacement; which altogether support increased equipment life and optimal equipment operation.

Increase Efficiency with Specialized Inspection Services Regular inspection service by LG experts identify expected problems and issues beforehand. An expert performs an inspection that checks faults in components and performance abnormalities in a customer’s HVAC equipment. Catching these problems early prevents further damage to the unit and unnecessary operating expenses through replacement and repair, by early recognition of failures and abnormalities.

LG Maintenance Package

Improve Equipment Quality with Cleaning Maintenance LG’s eco-friendly cleaning solution performs excellently in response to contamination. The cleaning removes dust and keeps the indoor environment comfortable by cleaning the air-flow system which can be subject to pressure loss and optimal airflow because of lingering contaminants. The service is handled by certified experts who are trained to properly clean equipment. Improve heating and cooling efficiencies and reduce energy consumption by removing pollutants from the filter and heat exchanger. It is critical to have VRF products be periodically cleaned by a specialist. Failure to perform systematic cleaning may harm cooling efficiency, air quality and health.

eeks before the COVID-19 vaccine was approved, Berlin has already began transforming big public spaces that are currently unused into mass vaccination hubs.

27

C O V E R

S T O R Y

Albrecht Broemme, the project manager in charge of setting up six of the vaccination hubs, started laying out Lego models of the sites in November. From colorful plastic mockups, Broemme turned the models into real-life facilities that are now capable of administering thousands of shots a day. The goal was to set up sites that citizens could file through, similar to shopping in IKEA. This is the practically the same goal in many other countries: to vaccinate as many individuals of the population in the fastest time possible. In fact, over 50 countries are on the race to inoculate their citizens in hopes of reducing the death toll and preventing succeeding waves of infections. In addition to the already existent network of hospitals, pharmacies, medical clinics, and other healthcare facilities, governments are starting to establish mass vaccination sites that can accommodate crowds. This often boils down to using sports arenas, stadiums, and convention centers but also deserted shopping malls and parking lots. Eric Toner, senior scholar at the John Hopkins Center for Health Security, said that vaccination sites should be very large facilities where large groups of people can be inoculated quickly. Although these are quite expensive to set up, operate, and maintain, they “can be very efficient.” COVID-19, however, can make the construction of mass vaccination sites more complex than what many thought. Being airborne, the highly contagious disease calls for a host of space and ventilation countermeasures to prevent the infection of staff and clients. Additionally, the vaccines themselves have demanding requirements, and so far, have short shelf lives. For instance, the shot produced by Pfizer/BioNTech must be kept in ultra-cold freezers that can maintain -94 degrees Fahrenheit. In Germany, security also arose as an issue when Broemme was drawing out his plans for the vaccine hubs. Some people, who opposed to vaccination are readily willing to use violence and possibly tear down the sites. Vaccine supplies also have to be watched carefully and secured in locked freezers to prevent people from stealing and reselling them on the black market. Apart from this, cybersecurity threats have surfaced since all super-coolers are equipped with a various technological devices, such as Bluetooth sensors and GPS trackers. 30

Another major challenge to mass vaccination is dealing with logistics, according to Mitesh Patel, Penn Medicine’s Nudge Unit’s director. This behavioral design team applies behavioral economics to sway patients’ decision-making process. He pointed out that the amount of distributed vaccine doses are larger in number compared to that that have already been given. This is primarily because governments have to schedule people, and there is only a limited number of individuals who can be vaccinated in a day. This is the main reason why vast sports facilities make them attracting host sites for mass vaccinations. Not only are they built to accommodate massive crowds, but they are also large enough to maintain social distancing, can easily be reached through transit, and usually have enough parking capacity. Patel adds that sports venues boast psychological advantages, as well, especially when the general public can associate memories to sports stadiums, such as supporting their favorite teams or attending a show.

42

Ali Asgary, an associate professor at Ontario, Canada-based York University and currently the associate director of the university’s Advanced Disaster, Emergency and Rapid Response Simulation, is now working on enhancing the layout of mass vaccination sites and vaccination drive-through clinics. Hospitals and local government units, who asked him for his assistance in organizing the campaign, have given Asgary a number of constraints to consider when planning his design. Instead of Legos that Broemme used for Germany, Asgary utilizes a simulation software called AnyLogic for modelling drive-through COVID-19 clinics. With the software, he can adjust several variables, including the number of lanes, people in each car, and the staffing. Using the additional data he receives, he can easily refine his simulations, and in turn, the software creates a rendering of what the vaccination site and its throughput would look like. Asgary has developed an application to facilitate the vaccination hubs easily, as well. - END 43

Cost-Effective Solar Installation from NuPON Technologies

NuPon Technology is providing the most durable and reliable UPS for various industries in the Philippines.

It has been almost a full year since the lockdown has happened in the country due to the pandemic. To say that we have seen the world adapt and change to adjust to this abrupt happening is an understatement. Weekly social gatherings have since become a rare treat for people instead of a weekly occurrence, travel abroad has become a thing of the past, and working from home has become the global norm. Unfortunately, not everyone can work comfortably in their home thanks to faulty and unreliable power sources. Thankfully, NuPon Technology has the solution to this problem of the new normal.

NuPon boasts multiple products to help each individual and organization struggling with severable, low-quality utility power. Industries that revolve around computers, network servers, data centers, telecommunication, high-tech semiconductor manufacturing, petrochemical equipment, etc. will surely benefit from these products. They cater to the smallest voltage (650 VA) to give power back up to PC or CCTV, to 1000 kVA for big machines and equipment. One example of their UPS is the line-interactive UPS (800 VA - 5 kVA). These matte black power boxes are commonly used for desktop PCs, workstations, network servers, and small machines. They come in a tower type or rack mount design for easy storing and space-saving concerns.

For CCTV systems, laboratory equipment, or even 3 phase system machines, the online/ double-conversion high-frequency UPS (1 kVA - 20 kVA) or the (10 kVA - 40 kVA) variants will prove to be satisfactory, especially with its 0 ms transfer time from line mode to battery mode feature. Industrial equipment and bigger machines will need NuPon’s online/ double-conversion low-frequency UPS (10 kVA - 600 kVA) models with isolation transformers to adapt to the different, often unforgiving industrial environments. These UPS devices are more than enough to protect the most critical of loads.

Lastly, their modular UPS (60 kVA 500 kVA) is an online hot-swappable machine with parallel redundancy, high efficiency and power density, and an optional built-in isolation transformer. There are many more machines that will help whoever avails of the UPS, such as NuPon’s STAR T1V, T2V, T3I, T4I, T5100, T6I, R3I series, and much, much more. NuPon is also leading multiple projects in the country. For instance, they are present in the environmental health and safety sector in Batangas with the first Philippine industrial park. By supplying and installing 7 units of 100 kVA 3 phase, low-frequency UPS, providing basic training for the operation and simple troubleshooting of the units, and conducting quarterly monitoring and checking of these UPS units as a form of after-sales service, NuPon is taking multiple steps to helming progress in the Philippines.

Going to Bataan, they supplied 100 units of customized 650 VA units to Mitsumi, a Japanese company. Unlike most areas in the Philippines, the industrial zone in which this company is situated still utilizes 110 VAC power instead of 220 VAC. They were able to provide their need for 110 VAC UPS which is not readily available in the Philippine market today. NuPon is also concurrently present in Cebu, Cavite, and many other places as they unfailingly supply multiple industries, companies, and location their helpful machinery and UPS units and other services to ensure smooth operations for their clients. Needless to say, NuPon’s presence in the country and the efficiency of their units speak for themselves. As they continue to breach boundaries and operate in a postpandemic world, their UPS units will continue to supply uninterrupted power for all.

Across International Offers Ultra-Low Freezers Crucial to Speed Up the COVID-19 Vaccination Roll Out

A

s the nation grapples with the nightmare of the COVID-19 crisis, the Livingston, New Jersey cold storage freezer, refrigerator and storage box manufacturer Across International, with its Sparks, Nevada, branch to service the West Coast, has immediately risen alongside local emergency responders to face the unprecedented challenge. The lab equipment provider has deployed the most versatile, reliable, efficient, easy to operate -86°C cold storage units, the flagship line of their catalog. With the upheavals in the healthcare community, these freezers make it

70

easier, safer and more affordable to store COVID-19 vaccination. Built not only with CFC and VFC requirements and cETLus compliance but also ease of the operator’s use in mind, the manufacturer is more than ready to help out the most affected counties in the U.S. The fact of the matter is that healthcare professionals and hospitals will have to adopt a new model to store COVID-19 vaccines and require the right technology and support to back it. It is a paradigm shift, and Across International understands the relevance of its ultra-low freezers, along with the values of the healthcare professionals that use them in the market.

Across International started its efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic at hometown, proudly offering its vaccine storage solutions to Essex County, NJ, a role model in the emergency response efforts; as Julie Wernau of the WSJ put it, “while officials struggle at times with supply hiccups caused by slow-toarrive vaccines, Essex County said it is using 100% of its doses every week, with surrounding counties coming to it for advice.” Across International was also there when first responders from the city of Elizabeth, NJ, and counties of Nevada and Washoe, neighbors of their Sparks location, followed suit, entrusting the programmable freezers with their precious vaccine reserves. Key features that set the freezers Across International offers apart as healthcare and emergency response teams weigh the decision of where to turn for cold storage include: ease of data collection, storage and export, simplifying tracking the conditions under which vaccines are stored; ergonomic design so they are easy to open, quieter to work around, and level even on uneven lab floors; safety features like alarms, internal batteries to run controllers if power is lost, CO2 backup to ensure samples are protected in case of critical failure, data loggers with Wi-fi/Bluetooth enabled text and email alerts, transmitters for connection to external systems, all geared towards ensuring no vaccines go to waste. This is crucial, as the WHO published in 2005 a guideline for program managers that found based on their data an estimated 50% of vaccines globally are destroyed between failures in temperature control and mishandling during transportation, the latter of which inspired the Ai -70 C shipping cube.

Not only does Across International seek to minimize vaccine loss due to improper storage but also take into account the growing environmental concerns in its selection of CFC-free refrigerants, opting for HC in the design of their RapidChill line, which cools faster, is readily available for recharge and comes with a lower energy consumption, environmental footprint and cost of ownership. This technology earned the RapidChill 20 and 26 Cu. Ft. models the EnergyStar rating for vaccination centers with big cold storage needs not looking to receive a big electric bill to match it. While the two branches stand side by side with our essential workers assisting the vaccination efforts however they can, Across International hopes the vaccination rollout throughout the country will occur faster. The manufacturer realizes the gravity of the situation and affirms that the distribution of the vaccine has become integral to return back to normalcy.

Outlook on the Global RNA Vaccine Patent Landscape

T

he idea of using mRNA as vaccines has been investigated for nearly three decades. By winning the race for a Covid-19 vaccine, mRNA vaccines have proven their worth, and it has highlighted their advantages over conventional vaccines. Now, all major pharmaceutical companies are, in some way, testing out the technology by entering into license agreements and/ or collaboration with well-established RNA companies (Pfizer, Sanofi, AstraZeneca, GSK, Merck, Roche, Bayer, etc.). Now that the first products have arrived on the market, IP positions have to be defined as companies will enforce their patents to secure their positions on the market. Patent litigations have already 74

been initiated before the EPO and the USPTO against key patents. Over 30 opposition proceedings have been identified herein, most of which were filed in the past 2 years and still pending. In this context, Arbutus recently succeeded in maintaining one of its key US patents covering its LNP delivery system, that could potentially cover Moderna’s RNA vaccine. However, as Moderna already announced, it is unlikely that patents will be enforced during the pandemic. The speed at which an mRNA vaccine can be designed has been the key to the recent success. Indeed, the first batches for human testing were made in less than 2 months, and authority approvals

were granted in less than a year. Clinical trials have demonstrated their safety and efficacy on mRNA vaccine candidates (about 95% effective in preventing COVID-19). Beyond a COVID-19 vaccine, RNA technology holds high promise for new vaccines against cancer and challenging viruses that conventional vaccines have failed to address (e.g. HIV, HSV, RSV). Moreover, this emerging technology successfully triggers antigenspecific T cell responses in cancer therapy. It also allows personalized immunotherapy by matching the genetic profile of each person’s cancer and inducing an immune response against the mutated part of the tumors (cancer neoantigen vaccines). In this evolving context, it is crucial to understand the intellectual property position and strategy of these different players. Such knowledge can help detect business risks and opportunities, anticipate emerging technologies, and enable strategic decisions to strengthen market position.

The first patent family identified was published in 1990. However, the technology was in a maturation phase up to 2010, as evidenced by a relatively low number of patent publications. This maturation phase was mostly related to the problem of rapid naked RNA degradation and the delivery system. One of the key discoveries that allowed the mRNA vaccine field to expand was based on research by Kariko et al. (2005 and 2008) on the incorporation of modified nucleoside into mRNA to increase stability and to ablate the mammalian innate immune response through the activation of Toll-like receptors (patented technology filed by the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania). The other key discovery was the use of lipid particles to protect and deliver the RNA molecule into the cells (patented by Protiva Therapeutics, now Arbutus Biopharma). The combination of these two discoveries allowed the field to expand, with an approximate 9-fold increase in patent publications. 75

Trust in COVID-19 Vaccine Shifts 67%, Medisafe Reports

R

espondents are eager to take the vaccine despite concerns over sideeffects and distribution challenges

Results from a new Medisafe survey of more than 4,000 patients reveal new confidence in the COVID-19 vaccine, with 80% of respondents placing trust in the shot, compared to just 13% of patients surveyed in October 2020. The new Medisafe survey aimed to examine patients’ feelings about entering year two of the pandemic, the COVID-19 vaccine, and the impact of the virus.

82

Survey findings show that 56% of respondents will get the vaccine as soon as its available, compared to just 21% last October, and 6% have already

received their vaccination. Despite the eagerness to receive their vaccine, half of all respondents have concerns about side effects; 40% believe it will have limited effectiveness; and 37% believe it may take too long to distribute. The challenges in distribution are also contributing to patients’ attitudes on when they expect to return to normal activities. Nearly 50% believe it won’t be until October 2021 or later before returning to traditional activity. 29 percent believe the national government has hindered vaccine distribution, while 25% say limited vaccine supply is to blame. Despite these challenges, vaccine manufacturers saw a 10% increase in favorability, with Pfizer listed as the preferred vaccine in the US among those currently available.

“The results from this latest survey show that patients are eager to take the COVID-19 vaccine, while also recognizing that normal activity is unlikely to resume until late in the year, and the pandemic has had lasting impact on their stress, exercise, and diet,” said Medisafe Chief Marketing Officer Jennifer Butler. “This survey provides greater visibility into patients’ concerns with taking the vaccine as we enter year two of the pandemic, and captures trends related to vaccine trust, impact of the COVID-19 virus, and optimism toward recovery.” Beyond the COVID-19 vaccine, survey respondents also indicated how the pandemic has impacted their lives upon entering into its second year. Every single respondent say they know a friend or family member that has been infected with COVID-19. One in 10 patients contracted the virus themselves, and 13% say they have lost a loved one to the virus. The emotional toll of the pandemic has also upended how patients are coping, with 60% reporting higher stress levels compared to just a year ago. Half of all respondents say they

are exercising less than a year ago. The results also show that men are more optimistic of a faster recovery, and users in their 20s and 30s have the highest amount of stress related to the pandemic among all age groups. “With more than 7MM users relying on Medisafe to help manage medications, we’re able to capture patients’ attitudes in real-time to understand the impact of the pandemic against the backdrop of a chronic condition,” Butler added. “When viewed through the lens of patients in various geographic areas, generations, and treatment areas, the COVID-19 crisis takes a more precise view on the lives of some of the most vulnerable populations.” Medisafe’s survey was conducted within its digital platform January 15 – January 22, capturing the viewpoints of more than 4,000 patients who use the digital drug companion to help manage one or more medications in conjunction with a medical condition. More efficiency for concentrated solar power plants

R

enewable energy has an important contribution to make in protecting the environment and climate. Solar energy plays a particularly significant role here and has become more widespread in recent years due to photovoltaics. However, this technology does not yet offer an efficient means of energy storage. An alternative is concentrated solar power (CSP) plants with heat storage systems. Heat is stored in molten salt so that electricity can be generated during the night or in bad weather conditions. Despite advancements in this technology, the investment costs in building a CSP plant are still very high. Therefore, it is all the more crucial to run the power plants, including the heat storage systems, as efficiently, economically and for as long as possible.

86

BASF has developed a new software solution to help with challenges in this area. The tool focuses on the stability of the storage medium (i.e. the molten salt), which includes the simulation of gas emissions, equipment corrosion and the estimation of the plant life span. BASF plays a key role in the CSP industry: The German chemical company produces inorganic salts, which are used as an energy storage medium in concentrated solar power plants. As such,

the company is one of the suppliers of sodium nitrate for Noor Energy 1 in Dubai – the largest solar project to date. As a producer of salts for such a long time, BASF has gained expertise through intensive research and can use this knowledge to support the planning, construction and operations of CSP plants. “Over the last few years, BASF has intensively examined the chemical reactions and equilibriums of molten salts at high temperatures. We have now incorporated this knowledge in a software

solution so that we can make it available to the CSP industry,” said Christian Schütz, research engineer in process development at BASF. “Thanks to our extensive research, we have a very good knowledge of salt chemistry at temperatures of over 400°C.” This has a significant meaning especially for CSP tower plants, which operate up to 565°C. The high temperatures in CSP plants are a challenge here: The salt is heated to over 400 °C using concentrated sunlight and then, when needed, emits the thermal energy again using a steam generator. The advantage of the high temperatures is that the same volume of salt can absorb more energy, while the efficiency of the cyclical process for converting the steam into electricity also increases along with the temperature. Basically, this means the higher the temperature, the more heat is stored, and the more energy is generated. “However, different reactions in the salt become evident above 400°C,” explained Schütz. For instance, the equilibrium of sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite shifts, as individual components of the salt decompose at higher temperatures, releasing different types of gases. The loss of gases translates into a loss of salt. “This is especially apparent the first time the plant is heated up and the salt melting process starts. This is when the greatest mass loss occurs for the plant operator.”. If it is not prevented, this mass loss must be compensated at regular intervals.

The new simulation tool from BASF allows mass loss to be predicted and counteracted by adjusting parameters such as temperature or additives. “We calculated this extremely accurately using equations,” commented Schütz, adding that those equations are derived from lab work of the last 6 years. Tests were conducted to establish how the salt mixture behaves under a wide range of temperature and pressure conditions and how the repeated heating and cooling affects longterm stability. These changes that take place over the long term, i.e. the “aging” of the salt over a number of years, can also be simulated using the software. A further function is the calculation of the corrosion rate of the power plant components, as the salt reacts with metals at high temperatures. As the corrosion rate has a direct influence on the life span of the plant, the tool can also be used to provide information on the predicted life span of the

plant. As such, the tool offers operators an overview of the wear and efficiency of their power plant with respect to the salt cycle. There are default parameters for each individual module of the power plant, which can each be adjusted to the power plant in question. “The aim of our simulation tool is to control the stability of the salt in such a way that they run efficiently and for as long as possible,” emphasized Erik Wiegert, digital expert in the Inorganics division at BASF. The software is already available as a fully functional prototype. If there is sufficient interest from the industry, BASF aims to add more functions to the program at a later stage and also offer it alongside its salt business. As well as offering added value in plants that are already up and running, the tool can also be used when designing new power plants, added Erik Wiegert: “We use the tool to pass on our salt expertise to operators.” 87
