W
hile the construction industry sure is adapting the changes in recruiting more women into their workforce, the female sector of this industry is still significantly underrepresented. In major countries across the globe, women compose of no more than 15% of the total construction worker population. This says a lot about the industry than the women itself. Though there is an increase in women who are getting more interested in working in the field, they are usually hindered by the traditions and belief in the industry. They have lower chances of promotion, are typically seen as the weaker applicant, and are paid lower than most of the men in the field. While there is no solid proof why there is a pay gap between genders, this doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible in the work field. Because of these incidents and maltreatment, more women tend to separate themselves from the construction industry altogether. Little do companies know that employing more women meant investing in a stronger and more efficient company. Women are more organized when it comes to technical 4

They tend to be more cooperative and collaborates more proficiently with other members of the team compared to their male counterparts. In fact, 9% of the women-owned construction firms earn more than $500,000 because of their effectiveness in their jobs. Although only 25% of Americans believe that we are more likely to colonize Mars than women dominating half of the Fortune 500 CEOs, it is still very apparent how much the female construction employees can do for their companies. Women only need proper encouragement from construction firms, and the
companies only need to better their facilities and treatment to accommodate more women under their wing. The concept of balanced gender diversity in the workplace is not too impossible of a dream to achieve.

As the construction industry evolves for the better, it has also started embracing the concept of technology and employee diversity. But while it has promoted the balance of male and female employees in their workforce, there is still a significant gap between the numbers of women versus men in the industry. As it turns out, the construction careers remain to be a male-dominated industry. There are no more than a million construction workers out of 10 million in the United States alone with only one
woman for every 100 men in the actual field, leaving the percentage at a staggering one percent of the construction population. In the United Kingdom, only 12.4% of the total construction workforce are women, while there is 12% in Australia. There are plenty of reasons why most women steer clear of the profession and take up a different path altogether. Some of these reasons are listed below.

1. The Pay Gap
W
omen have always been paid lesser than men across various industries, including construction. But what makes this worse is that women of color tend to be paid less than their white male counterparts. A black woman only earns $0.81, while a white man earns $1, even though both of them are construction laborers of the same rank.

Hispanic women in the construction industry are even paid lesser than that, making only 71.7% of Hispanic men’s pay and 50.4% of white men’s fee all while working in the same field. Companies using this pay gap should be more diligent in addressing this problem, so more women would be encouraged to join the construction workforce.

2. Harassment In an industry dominated by men, it is not impossible that sooner or later, a woman employee gets harassed whether they may be in the field or the office. Surveying more than 200 respondents resulted in about one-third of them claiming they experienced harassment. While most of the women enjoy working in the field and love the pay and benefits, no one should tolerate such behavior just because women comprise the minority of the workforce.

Promotions and workload are also affected as their male counterparts receive better treatment. Sixty percent of women in the construction industry complain that more men are more likely to get promoted than them. Fewer hours of work are also assigned to them, giving them the impression that they are weak. Employers and unions should be the first in line to protect their female employees from harassment in their workplace.

3. Stereotyping There are fewer women in the construction industry because there are fewer human resources personnel and recruiters who are open to welcoming them into the industry. They had always perceived this business as a male-only career and that women do not necessarily belong out there in the field. There have been no active efforts to educate them of their possible role in the field, so unaware female applicants have never tried getting into the industry. And although they may be qualified for certain positions, there has always been a recruitment bias, preferring the men applicants over the females.

As reported by the Peterson Institute, the top 25% of companies who promote and encourage gender diversity in their workforce tend to outperform their competitors by 46%. Although logically, there should be more women in the field than in the office, it is believed that there would be a significant change if females start dominating the top positions first. When women are given managerial tasks, they tend to be more cooperative as compared to men. This has become a benefit in the construction industry as projects all need high-level of collaboration to be deemed successful. With more women working in the top ranks, there would be a noticeable increase in the productivity of the company. It is never an easy task to balance the construction workforce, but with proper education and recruitment pro18
cesses, achieving a well-balanced and sound environment for women in the construction industry doesn’t seem to be too far-fetched. -end-

UK Rail Leaders Lay Foundations for Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing On World Mental Health Day 2018 (10 October), HSRIL (High Speed Rail Industry Leaders), which supports and champions high-speed rail in Britain, has committed to a new charter to promote a step change in supporting positive mental health and wellbeing. Launching the charter and report, “Laying the foundations for positive mental health and wellbeing�, HSRIL is leading an ambition to promote awareness and action on mental 22
health and wellbeing through the delivery of High Speed 2, the biggest rail investment and construction program in the U.K. in decades. The scale of HS2 creates the opportunity to lead a transformation in support for positive mental health and wellbeing in the rail and construction sectors and beyond. This includes addressing mental health and wellbeing in working
environments for those constructing HS2 and communities where construction takes place, as well as how the railway operates for staff and passengers, designing for wellbeing from the start.
Whilst the U.K. is one of the world’s safest railways1, the industry recognizes more progress must be made to achieve positive mental health and wellbeing. The U.K. construction and building sector represents 11 per cent of more than 13,000 workplace suicides each year, one of the highest rates among the professions. 2 All but ten of these suicides in the sector were men, with two-thirds of those aged over
40.3 Mental ill health accounts for four times as many days lost than safety related injuries.4 The HSRIL report draws on innovations and approaches that HSRIL members have put in place or are developing and which lay the foundations for a commitment to a step-change and new industry standard in the U.K.: • Creating a culture of open-
ness including through role play sessions to enable conversations about mental health and to counter the stigma and taboos, which particularly affects men • Establishing mental health first aiders and champions in the workplace to signpost support • Treating mental health on par with physical health and agreeing a step change in approach led from the top of organizations • Proactive and preventative approaches to mental health and wellbeing • Changing the nature of construction through manufacturing centers with less dangerous site work needed as a result; and designing out future problems such as destressing environments • Supporting national mental health awareness events and campaigns • Establishing employment assistant programs to support employees as well as their families • Developing fitness and nutrition schemes, not just treating ill health but seeking prevention, leading to less surgery and quicker recovery times • Engaging staff in activity to support positive mental health as well as supporting positive forms of engagement in the workplace • Enabling young employees to develop communication and soft skills to address low confidence that can lead to stress, anxiety and a dissatisfied work life

ing for yourself and your value or finding an innovative way to solve a problem,” she continues. “It will be different for everyone. At the end of the day it is your career. Be proud of yourself and your engagement.” Get out there, be tenacious and remember, nothing is impossible “Don’t look at things as impossibilities,” says Jennifer Edmunson, “Only look at them as challenges that need to be overcome.” As a geologist and in-space man-
ufacturing engineer, figuring out how to build on Mars is one of the thrilling challenges she’s faced with, and it starts with studying soil chemistry, mineralogy, and geomechanical properties. In fact, when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) confirmed nearly three years ago that water indeed flows on Mars, Jennifer was already deep into experimenting with 3D printing and additive construction for in-space use. “Be tenacious,” she says, “Success will be yours if you just keep trying.”
Jennifer and her team found early success using a Martian simulant to create cement construction material and she’s hopeful that one day, they will be able to use 3D printing technology to print their entire habitat. For now, Jennifer spends most of her time at the NASA Marshall Flight Space Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where she’s leading the charge to better understand the Red Planet’s origin, habitability and resources – all through a geological focus. “Don’t be afraid to take a detour in life – sometimes the end of the new road is exactly where you
should be and will be more fulfilling than your original intended path,” Jennifer adds. Her own path has also included work supporting NASA’s International Space Station program, an orbiting research facility – the largest single structure ever put into space by humans – that’s helping develop groundbreaking vaccination research and generating captured-imagery to assist with disaster mitigation and relief efforts, including the recent Hurricane Florence.

Another metro win for KONE in China with deal to equip Wuxi Metro line 3
K
ONE, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry, has won an order to equip line 3 of the Wuxi Metro in the southern part of China’s Jiangsu Province. The deal builds on KONE’s previous contribution to line 2 of the Wuxi Metro. Line 3 of the Wuxi Metro runs 28.5 kilometers in a southeastern direction, starting at the Su Temple in the northwest, and ending at the Shuo Fang International Airport in the south. All 21 stations along the 30
line are situated underground. KONE will supply the metro line with 99 KONE TransitMaster(TM) 140 heavy-duty escalators designed specifically to meet the special requirements of metro projects in China, an important infrastructure market for KONE. The escalators have a maximum transport capacity of 7,300 people per hour. “Wuxi is also known as ‘little Shanghai’ thanks to its fast pace of urbanization and booming
economy. It is a pleasure to help commuters and visitors to this vibrant city move around smoothly and safely,” says William B. Johnson, executive vice president, KONE Greater China.
