EDITOR‘S NOTE
O
ver the years, the need for both commercial and residential buildings are increasing, which means more construction projects are being done.
Safety But as the number of construction projects skyrockets, more injuries and risks are faced by workers due to onsite accidents. The usual cause of fatalities and injury are electric shock, falling from heights, scaffold collapse, and others. Although construction safety is observed, we still cannot guarantee that the job site is accident-free.
The Latest Autonomous Heavy Equipment Trends
Productivity Apart from protecting the lives of the workers, automated vehicles can help increase productivity and efficiency. Unlike humans, machines are more accurate and precise.
Automation
Driverless heavy equipment can also work for long hours But with the use of power while performing dangerous tools, computer-aided jobs, which may cause software, applications, robotics, and automated heavy injuries. As a result, projects are completed on time and equipment vehicles, this within the budget. problem can be prevented. Instead of risking lives to accomplish work, construction workers can become operators for automated excavators, dozers, trucks, cranes, and others. This will protect them from excessive exposure to dust, heat, and other factors that may bring injury and sickness.

Automation and Job Loss In truth, companies are building autonomous construction vehicles not to replace human construction crews but to work with them. It may pose a threat to the number of human resources needed on the site, but it can improve the quality of
buildings and structures. Using driverless vehicles in the job site can lead to better designs while saving money, time, and labor.
Quality Construction Digital modeling paired with autonomous machinery, can indeed improve the quality of construction. The faster a construction project is built, the more profit it can give to the contractors and the more value it can offer to the users. With the benefits that autonomous heavy equipment can provide, future construction sites will definitely make use of them promising a safer working environment.

Without a doubt, the advancement of technology and robotics have played a considerable impact in construction as they increase productivity and reduce risks. Power tools, computer-aided machines, construction software, and even robots are just some of the tools that are very useful to increase production and efficiency in a job site. But it doesn’t end there. One of the top challenges that contractors face is the lack of skilled workers who can efficiently handle jobs with less supervision. As a result, the best workers have more work
than they can handle. Contractors are also left with no choice but to hire workers that still need proper training. However, this dilemma is about to end as autonomous construction equipment are starting to intervene in today’s construction sites. The creation of automated equipment like trucks and excavators pave the way for more improvement in job sites. If these are used along with other technological tools, the construction industry will indeed move forward.

Autonomous Vehicles Today
Although most of these vehicles are still in the planning stage, there are already construction machines that are in use these days. Komatsu began developing autonomous mining trucks in 2008 and released the world’s first dozer with fully automatic blade control semiautonomous D61i-23 dozer in 2013. Built Robotics created the autonomous track loader (ATL) in October 2017 which digs and grades a large space operated via an iPad. In the same year, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) unveiled the battery-electric HX2 load 10
carrier with vision capabilities and the hybrid wheel hauler called the LX1. Meanwhile, Caterpillar released more than 100 autonomous haul trucks that can be remotely controlled by an operator. Undoubtedly, these machines have made a massive difference in construction sites. And the industry is expecting to see more of these in the coming years.

The Advantages of Autonomous Vehicles Over the past years, there have been significant improvements in autonomous car technologies for transportation, which is believed to make roads safer. But the benefits of automated vehicles are also integrated into the construction sector. The construction site is a controlled setting, making it an ideal place for driverless equipment. There are advantages that automated vehicles can bring the construction sector. Con-
12
sidering this, many contractors will prefer to use one in their future projects.
Safety. Driverless vehicles
can be controlled remotely, which lessens the risks of human construction workers since they can work from a distance. Humans may get tired and take naps during night time operations resulting in increased risks and inefficient results. Workers do not need to be exposed to excessive dust, which may result in illnesses. Machines
14
can also work longer hours and are more efficient.
Efficiency. Internet-connected sensors are commonly used to monitor vehicles, ensuring that they are working at peak performance. The operation requires less labor, less fuel, and less money.
Productivity. With the
real-time monitoring of these machines, work is completed efficiently and accurately eliminating human error. It can also help speed up the process in finishing the project, which means that the contractor will be able to receive payments on time without worrying of fines.
Cost Effective. Another perk
of using autonomous vehicles is the amount of costs that are reduced over time. Its geofencing features deal with fuel consumption and shortened work operations.

Will Automated Equipment Eliminate Workers? Apparently, the release of these vehicles will have an impact on the number of manpower needed for a project. But construction workers don’t need to fear. The automation of machines in a job site will not lead to operator extinction. Although it will indeed reduce the number of workers needed, it can lighten the workload and upgrade their skills. This will also allow skilled laborers to focus on other areas and complete the job faster. Using these vehicles will also change their roles and functions while reducing risks and ensuring safety. Instead of being at the center of action, workers are merely holding on to joysticks and iPads to manage the project. Operators will function like airplane pilots since they will input the necessary information that a machine needs. The right data will guarantee the vehicles’ accurate performance. Meanwhile, the intervention of human controllers will avoid the machines from malfunc18
tioning. If we look at it, automated heavy equipment can indeed bring advancement in the construction site. But apart from the speedy completion
of projects, it will also improve the quality of construction, resulting in better structures. -end-

New California dam built with Black & Veatch’s management help reaches key milestone Replacement dam supplants earthen one long considered seismically unsafe near San Francisco, ensuring reliability of region’s water supply Seventeen years after being deemed seismically vulnerable and having its capacity restricted, a San Francisco-area dam and reservoir near an active fault line soon will be at full volume, thanks to a new dam 22
that ensures a reliable water supply to millions of residents. Marking the biggest milestone on the massive, 7-year-old construction project featuring construction management by Black & Veatch, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission recently celebrated completion of the new 220-foot-tall Calaveras dam embankment that will replace the nearly century-old one. The
The former dam was widely seen as vulnerable to a sizable temblor, and that impoundment’s failure could send a devastating, likely deadly torrent of water into densely populated areas on its way to the bay. First erected in 1913 and rebuilt after it collapsed five years later, that dam once was considered the world’s biggest earth-fill impoundment.
new dam will begin impounding water this winter, with ancillary projects including automation of instrumentation and controls to be completed early next year. At a cost of $823 million, the new dam and its crest length of 1,210 feet, base thickness of 1,180 feet and crest width of 80 feet holds back the 4-mile-long reservoir crucial to providing clean, safe water to 2.7 million Bay Area customers. While impounding the water reserve also represents an insurance policy during California’s years-long drought, the dam also is the centerpiece of one of the nation’s biggest water infrastructure programs:
the commission’s $4.8-billion, 16-year push to overhaul the 167-mile-long regional water delivery system. Built to contemporary seismic standards, the new dam – just 1,000 feet downstream from the existing embankment it replaces and designed to withstand a 7.2-magnitude earthquake – will restore the reservoir to its original capacity of 31 billion gallons. In 2001, California regulators declared the previous dam seismically unsafe and ordered that its capacity be lowered to less than 40 percent.
Replacing it was a 21st-Century engineering feat, involving the moving of 12 million cubic yards of earth and rock – enough to fill four National Football League stadiums. Most of the materials were sourced from on-site borrow areas, including a hillside that was sliced off to remove an ancient landslide formation towering above the spillway. Crews drilled 100 feet down into the rock below the new dam, injecting grout that sealed the foundation and the abutments. More than 500 tons of concrete was injected into the new impoundment’s foundation, creating a “grout curtain” to ward off underground seepage and strengthen the base. The new 1,150-foot-long spillway – completed in April 2016 and designed to bypass excess water from the reservoir around the new dam and send it safely to Alameda Creek below – is crafted of roughly 40,000 cubic yards of concrete. As a critical safety feature, that channel is anchored to the hillside by nearly 2,000 steel rods bored 25 feet into the rock. The spillway’s chute featuring a 30-percent downward slope leads to a stilling basin 23
that slows the water before it is released into the creek, paring its erosion potential and protecting the fragile ecosystem. “This new dam, without question, was a massive undertaking, and now San Francisco-area water consumers will benefit from water supply reliability for decades to come,” said Chris Mueller, Black & 24
Veatch’s project director. San Francisco Mayor London Breed stressed the importance of the impoundment’s structural upgrade, noting that “it is only a matter of time until we experience another major earthquake, and our critical infrastructure needs to be ready.” “This important improvement project at the Calaveras Reservoir
will make sure that our water systems are seismically resilient and our local water supply is secure when the next big one strikes,” Breed is quoted as saying in a SFPUC news release about a Sept. 21 ceremony touting the completion of the top of the dam.

What’s Next for the Water-Energy Nexus?
Like fine wine and cheese, water and energy just fit together. With shortages in both ahead, here’s a look at two Jacobs-supported projects maximizing mutually beneficial outcomes across the water-energy nexus. The United States uses more than 58 trillion gallons of water each year to produce energy – enough to fill 88 million Olympic-sized swimming pools! This water is drawn from lakes, rivers and underground aquifers – parts of our freshwater reserves that account for just three percent of the global water supply. 26
By 2030, the U.S. Intelligence Community estimates that the global middle class will surge to 4.9 billion people, introducing a significant increase in freshwater consumption globally. Satisfying the thirst created by growing populations impacts more than just having enough water to drink and bathe in. When populations boom, there is an increased demand on the energy sector to provide resources needed to power livelihoods. Water and energy are interdependent. Extracting, pumping and delivering water for human use treating wastewater
for safe return into to the natural environment requires energy – and water is used in every phase of energy production. Unless current practices change, we won’t have enough water to drink, let alone serve energy and power needs in the next two decades. Utilities, industries and water-scarce regions that are implementing water reuse schemes and water systems capable of recovering energy, carbon and nutrients – like Singapore’s Tuas Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) or Denmark’s award-winning Ejby Mølle net-positive energy wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) – recognize the value of conserving and reusing water, optimizing their operations and reducing their energy and carbon footprint. Solutions such as these are made possible by advanced
wastewater technologies like anaerobic digesters for biogas production, generators for electrical energy, fluid-bed incinerators for heat recovery and more. In Singapore for example, the Singapore Public Utilities Board’s new Tuas WRP will be pivotal in helping the island nation serve more than half of its future water needs with NEWater, its own brand of high-grade reclaimed wastewater. Tuas WRP will be the largest membrane bioreactor facility in the world. A first in Singapore, it will be co-located with a solid waste incineration plant to harness potential synergies of integrating used water and solid waste treatment while optimizing land use. Co-digestion of food waste with used water sludge at Tuas WRP will increase the yield of biogas, which can be used at the incineration plant to improve steam quality and give rise to higher overall plant thermal
efficiency. This process will increase electricity production and export more energy to the power grid, while allowing both facilities to be energy self-sufficient. VCS Denmark’s Ejby Mølle WWTP in Odense achieved energy neutrality primarily using carbon redirection to reduce process energy consumption while increasing energy generation from a biogas-driven combined heat power system. Today, the plant generates over 150 percent of its energy (electrical and heat) demand with sidestream and mainstream deammonification capabilities. This means that surplus electrical energy gets fed back to the power grid and the plant’s hot water is reused in one of VCS’ district heating systems that serves locations nearly 13 miles away – and it’s all done while still achieving full effluent compliance. 27

Advanced Stadium Cooling: Innovative Technology Coming to the Qatar World Cup Every stadium has it’s own unique form and structure
The 2018 World Cup marked the World Cup debut of using the Video Assistant Referee, also known as VAR, as the newest technological innovation coming to the stadiums. According to FIFA, the VAR system had a success rate of 99.3 percent and many football analysts have praised the introduction of VAR. In their opinion, the World Cup was a perfect example of how technology can work well for football, although it did show that there are some risks involved in relying on the technology. In 2022, when the World Cup will be played in Qatar, a newer and bigger technical innovation will come to the stadiums. All host stadiums will be air-conditioned, making it doable to organize the World Cup in a country with extreme heats. Since Qatar was announced as the competition’s host in December 2010, many have been critical of the controversial choice wondering how an event like the World Cup could be organized in the desert. 36
In only one generation, Qatar has transformed from a handful of poor fishing villages into the richest country per capita in the world. It turns out if you combine gas revenues with foreign labor and the firm hand of the ruling monarchy, a country can be transformed rather quickly. Now, Qatar is taking on one of the biggest sports events the world has to offer. Because of the extreme heat, revolutionary cooling technology is going to be used at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after tests proved everything is working as it should at the proposed World Cup stadiums. The development is an important step in the build-up to the tournament, which has courted controversy since Qatar was announced as the competition’s host. The 2022 tournament is therefore being held in winter for the first time, to avoid the searing summer heat. With temperatures averaging 42
degrees Celsius in summer, the decision was made to move the dates of the World Cup to winter, when temperatures around 30 degrees are to be expected. This is the reason why the stadiums will have air-conditioning installed, in order to bring down the temperature to about 20 degrees on the pitch and 23 degrees in the stands. The innovation being trialed in Qatar involves a system where cold air is being pumped into stadiums through a system powered by chilled water, which is the transformed into a cold mist after passing through cooling nozzles. They way it works is that the platform of the stadium is used to defend it against the infiltration of warm wind. This means the stadium is a barrier that is basically containing a cold bubble inside. The technology works by maintaining the cold bubble for as long as necessary in order for people to watch the game, and so the players are comfortable enough to play their game. The Al Wakrah Stadium also has a roof that can be opened and a seating-bowl cooling system to allow football to be played all-year round. At Al Wakrah Stadium, they are using an air circulation 38
technique, which means some of the air is drawn back, cooled again and then pushed back to the supporters and players. The cooling technology for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 has been a crucial part since the country announced its bid for the tournament in 2009. Every stadium has it’s own unique form and structure. For example, the Khalifa International Stadium is a big stadium with an athletics track which makes it so an unconventional treatment is needed. At Khalifa, fresh air is taken and pushed to the people. Moreover, a new line of under-seat diffusers has been developed in order to deliver the air to fans in a gentle manner. No doubt, Qatar wants to show itself to the world, building the most advanced stadiums that ever have been built. The stadiums are also built so close to each other, fans could actually attend more than one game per day. The longest distance between two venues is just 55km, a short journey that will be seamless thanks to an advanced underground railway system.

How Does Cell Phone Spy Software Work The Cell Phone Spy Software is a highly recommended monitoring tool
How to Remotely Install the App to Your Target Phone Most customers think that installing a spy software app on the target mobile requires physical access. In reality, you can actually install remotely to any device running on iOS. All you need is the Apple ID and password of the phone. When you have these credentials, you can then proceed to the following steps: 1. Set up your account in the Cell Phone Spy Software website. Go to your dashboard. 2. Activate your account and register the target device using the Apple ID and password. 3. You can now monitor the activity logs of the phone and set up the triggers according to your preferences.
Cell Phone Spy Software https:// cell-phone-spy-software.net/ is a smartphone spy application that collects information from your desired target cell phone without the owner knowledge. You can utilize the app for a wide range of purposes such as tracking text messages, recording calls, and retrieving other private data on the target phone. This app works only in the background, and the owner does not have any access to it. You only need to hide the icon from the screen of the phone to make it invisible to the target phone’s owner. After registering and creating an account, you can then begin 40
spying on the device. The spy software has a dashboard which displays the account settings, general information of the phone, and its activity logs. The activity logs are organized in a live panel where you can monitor all the actions made by the owner and the data received by the device. Whenever a “trigger” is set off in the target phone, a notification is sent to you. The trigger can be something from the lines of receiving messages with your set keywords or the installation of a new app. You can change the triggers anytime.
Features of the Cell Phone Spy Software Monitor Phone Logs - These logs include messages, calls, videos, photos, and basically any manipulation done on the screen. You can also detect calendar events set by the owner, along with messages containing specific keywords. This will be of great help if you are a worried parent as it will give you peace of mind to view all your child’s activities remotely. Check Chats from Various Messaging Apps - Aside from receiving text messages and
recovering the deleted ones, you can also access the chat logs from the instant messaging apps installed in the phone, some of which are Facebook’s Messenger, WhatsApp, and Snapchat. You can view both content and multimedia (videos and pictures) sent to the app. Since children these days are more inclined to online communication rather than text messages, this feature will come in handy, and you can quickly be aware of any inappropriate conversations. Track Whereabouts - With the phone’s GPS, you can easily locate the whereabouts of the target device and even determine the previous locations and most frequently visited places of the owner. You also have the option to set “safe zones” and get notified whenever the phone leaves the premises of the zone. Control Apps - You have full control of the apps that the phone has, and you can always remove any of the apps you feel unnecessary. On top of that, you also have access to their browser history, along with other statistics like durations, bookmarks, and regularly visited websites. Set restrictions and block dangerous and unsuitable sites from the phone’s browser.
The Bottom Line The Cell Phone Spy Software is a highly recommended monitoring tool, especially for worried parents. With the rise of the digital age, it is only reasonable to peak into your child’s phone activities to ensure both their welfare and safety.

12V Waterproof Actuator One of the distinctive advantages of the waterproof linear actuators is undoubtedly their simple design
Electric linear actuators are the mechanisms, the core task of which is the transfer of force from the control device to the executive one. Linear actuators vary in the way they transfer their energy. At the same time, the object controlled can be driven by a rotational or linear motion action. One of the distinctive advantages of the waterproof linear actuators is undoubtedly their simple design. Due to this, actuators have an impressively long-lasting life service, in addition, they do not require regular maintenance and are unpretentious to the conditions. Simple execution allows using devices even in unfavorable climatic conditions. Depending on the manufacturer, models may have additional protection that increases the resistance of the product to disadvantageous factors. Waterproof electric linear actuators of Progres44
sive Automations manufacturer can be used for the various types of sea works. This can be a shipbuilding industry where this technology may come in handy for the construction of automated boat hatches that can prevent lover sections of a ship from flooding during powerful sea storms. This technology also can be implemented for the construction of complicated inner mechanisms of military submarines where they can be responsible for the pressure control which is essential for the submarines’ operability. There are three basic types of water protection: • IP54 – provides protection against water splashes penetration from all sides; • IP65 – prevents the penetration of water flows inside the case at any possible angle; • IP67 – with such protection the device is capable to function when fully submerged under the water.
A S I A PA C I F I C N E W S
For example, PA-06 linear actuator model of Progressive Automations has the IP67 water protection meaning that this device is really capable to function even when fully submerged into the water and even when being at a significant depth. The minimum technical specifications of such waterproof electric linear actuator are the following: stroke – 2 inches, force – 22 Ibs, speed – 1.38 inches/sec, whereas the maximum technical specifications are like this: stroke – 24 inches, force – 180 Ibs, speed – 0.47 inches/sec. Organize your Office: You are wrong if you think that a messy office symbolizes that you are too busy creating great ideas. Don’t get inspired by Einstein’s messy hair. Cluttered and messy work environment hinders creativity rather than fostering it. Just imagine how you will feel if you enter a space where spare chairs are rolling on the floor, cartons are piled up in a corner, 48

and dust-covered broken printer and photocopy machine are placed helplessly in the other corner? Wouldn’t that be suffocating? So, how can you expect your employees to work in such an environment? You should create a space to keep all these spare, broken, and other service goods to increase your workspace potential to do more. You can choose any industrial shed design according to your requirement and create a place to place excessive and broken things to get an organized workspace.
Give Personal Space: Most organizations focus on creating a space which fosters mutual coordination, harmony, and collaboration for strong teamwork. But little do 52

Room for a Break: Humans’ brain doesn’t like the feeling of being bound. That’s why you start feeling dull and depressed after sticking to a particular space for a long time. Floor Standing Air-Conditioner is the Best Cooling Solution in Offices and Large Homes
It may seem like a breeze, but choosing an air conditioner is no cakewalk. The decision to purchase the best Air Conditioning unit to get the coolest, cleanest air for a particular room is one that requires a lot of forethought. This decision rests on hitting the mark with many factors, such as room size, ease of use, amount of energy saved, appearance, and much, much more. Needless to say, research, as with all major purchase decisions in life, is paramount before the inevitable purchase.
For owners of sizeable homes and offices, the floor standing air conditioner is a typical frontrunner. When situated in the right place, floor standing AC units stand out among its competitors and counterparts. With that being said, here is a snackable list of four benefits to remember when investing in a floor standing air conditioner unit.
1. You are free to cool whatever room you want Central air conditioning units are the go-to products for holistic, facility-wide cooling. However, people tend to feel different levels of comfort when faced with different temperatures. Nowadays, individuals crave a certain level of control in their homes and offices. Some want to snuggle together and watch movies in a cold room, while some want to turn up the heat when having their workout. Thus, the floor standing units are the best option for effortlessly adjusting the temperatures to appease the needs of different individuals.
2. Getting to it is a breeze Ease of use is everything in this day and age. While some may argue that having a remote control for a wall-mounted AC is easy (and it is), these units are oftentimes embedded in hard-to-reach places that may prove difficult when turning it on or off. In contrast, floor standing air conditioners are perhaps one of the least difficult AC units to reach and access, being situated in the corners of various rooms. If one feels hot or cold, they only need to walk up to the unit and turn it on or off as needed.
3. It can be installed and moved anywhere Floor standing air conditioners are highly mobile units. They are capable of being installed and moved in any of the facility’s rooms, offering a wide range of customizability when choosing which room in the house or
office to cool. All this type of AC unit needs for instalment is a flat surface, as not all every wall is suitable for a wall-mounted air conditioner. Not only are they easy to install, floor standing air conditioners can also be moved anywhere should the facility owners decide to place the unit in another room.
4. It cools rooms faster The higher an air conditioner is installed, the more time it takes for a room to be cooled. This is apparent with wall-mounted units which are, more often than not, situated in higher parts of the room. Since the installation level of a floor standing aircon is lower than its wall-mounted counterpart, these floor standing units cool the room quicker. This is especially handy after one gets back home after a hot, lengthy commute. For larger homes and workplaces, as well as facilities that revolve around convenience, the floor standing air conditioning unit is a definite choice. However, one of the main critiques against floor standing units are their space-consuming bulk and uninvitingly industrial design. Luckily, the TOSOT I-CROWN Floor Standing (Premium Series) air conditioner units face no such problems. With a sophisticated, elegant appearance, unique design, and slim shape manufactured to fit with any aesthetic or room theme.
