umans are given bodies designed to move in order to keep them alive and cover their basic needs for survival. In the olden times, our ancestors used to till the soil to plant crops or hunt animals in order to have something to eat. They created fire to light-up their homes and stay warm at night.

But we are now living in a far too convenient age where we no longer need to sweat over things. Our basic needs are pretty much available with the use of technology-driven machines. In fact, we are living in a very luxurious setting that we now have amazing Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) systems that have been undeniably saving our lives from extreme cold and heat. However, just like our body these machines are also vulnerable and susceptible to wear and breakage if not taken care properly. They serve a special purpose in our lives and thus, they need to be continuously fueled and maintained responsibly. Unfortunately, us, humans have grown too lazy to perform mundane tasks like cleaning the air ducts of the system. Also, to add that it is a very time-consuming task which has historically resulted to disastrous accidents as well in the past. HVACR attack A serious threat to security Buildings and other similar establishments have been blessed by the power of HVAC building automation systems (BAS). It saves a lot of energy for mechanical engineers to adjust and repair the ventilation and cooling systems. The use of digital controls is an advantage for many building engineers because microprocessors made controllers small and more powerful. BAS can monitor energy usage in electricity, water, gas or fuel. BAS is very helpful in business. Fastfood chains are said to be the first one to adapt this system because of the imbalance of temperature in the kitchen and customers’ dining area. It provides efficiency in controlling air-conditioning, heating comfort and process systems. BAS is networked to the internet or a standalone system where controllers can control the functions using their own internal processors. However, using BAS has also 22
disadvantages. Hackers can attack the system which can compromise information. The dedicated network of clients for BAS connection can be vulnerable to distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. This attack intentionally paralyzes the computer system. Researchers have found out a new attack technique called “HVACker.” This technique allows attackers to send commands using temperature changes and convert it to binary code. HVACR BAS is also very helpful in hospitals as it maintains good indoor air quality and thermal condition suitable for the patients. However, if not secured, this HVAC system can cause a threat to patients’ security and safety. In 2009, a hospital security guard was arrested because of accessing the HVAC system and the personal information system of a Texas hospital. According to experts, manipulating the HVACR system can affect the condition of patients who are sensitive to changes in temperature.
If hospitals are targeted by these attacks, what more for government offices? Government data breach can cause worse scenarios such as election fraud or war. It can also disrupt government services and put trade systems at risk. HVACR system can become an open-door for intruders to penetrate into the system and they can easily hide as well to prevent detection. These attacks are detrimental and solutions are being offered by cybersecurity firms. You can avoid these HVACR attacks by being wise in choosing an outside service contractor and by maintaining secure data systems and practices. The company should also make sure that the building automation system is not connected to any sensitive information.

University Of Hawai’i Maui College Aims To Be The First Campus With 100-percent Renewable Energy Generated On-site With Battery-enabled Self-supply niversity of Hawai’i (UH) announced that its Maui College campus will soon be among the first in the nation to generate 100 percent of its energy from on-site solar photovoltaic (PV) systems coupled with battery storage. The project is part of a partnership with Johnson Controls and Pacific Current that will also allow four UH community college campuses on O’ahu to significantly reduce their fossil fuel consumption.
H Maui College’s new PV plus storage system will be capable of eliminating the campus’ fossil fuel-based energy use when it is operational in 2019. On O’ahu, through the combination of solar shade canopies, distributed energy storage and energy efficiency measures, Leeward Community College, Honolulu Community College, Kapi’olani Community College and Windward Community College will reduce their

use of fossil fuel for energy by 98 percent, 97 percent, 74 percent and 70 percent, respectively. In 2015, Hawai’i became the first state in the country to make an unprecedented commitment to achieve 100 percent renewable energy by 2045. Concurrently, UH and the Hawai’i Legislature established a collective goal for the university system to be “net-zero” by January 1, 2035, meaning the system would produce as much renewable energy as it consumes across its campuses.
Of the ten campuses, UH Maui College is on target to be the first to supply 100 percent of its energy needs through renewable energy. The partnership between UH, Johnson Controls and Pacific Current is the second phase of a multi-year energy efficiency and renewable energy project. In phase one, energy efficiency measures were successfully implemented at UH Maui College and the O’ahu community college
campuses under energy performance contracts awarded to Johnson Controls in 2010. Phase two includes additional energy efficiency upgrades and the installation of on-site solar PV coupled with battery storage, allowing the five campuses to use the renewable generated energy as needed. The PV plus storage systems will be developed by Johnson Controls and owned by Hawai’i-based Pacific Current. The energy efficiency upgrades will also reduce the deferred maintenance backlog at these campuses by approximately $20 million. “With the implementation of phase two, these five UH campuses will have reduced fossil fuel energy consumption by ~14 GWh annually (45 percent) and added ~13 GWh renewable energy generation,” said UH Vice President for Community Colleges John Morton. “We are proud to
move the entire University of Hawai’i System closer to its net-zero energy mandate, to celebrate UH Maui College’s achievement and to position the O’ahu community college campuses within reach of 100 percent renewable energy generation.” Following the successful implementation of energy conservation measures across the campuses during phase one, phase two will bring the total on-site capacity to 2.8 MW of solar PV and 13.2 MWh of battery distributed energy storage at UH Maui College, and 7.7 MW of solar PV and 28.6 MWh of battery distributed energy storage to the UH Community Colleges O’ahu campuses. “Hawai’i’s leaders set the national example of sustainability and renewable
energy standards with the net-zero mandate by 2035 for UH, and we’re proud to partner with the university to help it reach that commitment and aim for UH Maui College to become the first campus in the U.S. to generate and store 100 percent renewable energy onsite, 16 years ahead of schedule,” said Rod Rushing, president, Building Solutions North America, Johnson Controls. Energy and infrastructure improvements at the five UH campuses involved in the project are scheduled to be completed by Q2 2019.
“Minimizing the cost for the developer is the best way to provide affordable buildings. Going forward, we need to understand how to save on construction costs and how to use new technologies to speed up the construction process.” 25

World’s Largest Undersea Tunnel Stays Cool and Reduces Environmental Impact Eurotunnel’s sustainability efforts boosted with completion of new cooling system in landmark Channel Tunnel that delivers energy savings of at least 33% or 4.8GWh per year urotunnel today released official data demonstrating energy savings of 33 percent after the first season of operating a new cooling system for maintaining requisite temperatures in the landmark Channel Tunnel. The operator saved 4.8 GWh and approximately € 500,000 in 2017 courtesy of the new cooling system – equivalent to saving enough electricity to run 1,000 households.

The newly released data from the operation of the new cooling system will dramatically boost Eurotunnel’s sustainability efforts which to date have been recognised with its fifth consecutive certification from the UK’s Carbon Trust Standard for a further 9% decrease of its carbon footprint in 20152016 compared to 2012-2013. “Eurotunnel’s commitment to environmental protection involves a number of initiatives. We saw the replacement of the Channel Tunnel cooling system as a chance to reduce our energy consumption and carbon footprint,” said François
Gauthey, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Getlink, Channel Tunnel owner. “This effort required installing a new cooling system—Europe’s largest—to maintain the Channel Tunnel at optimal ambient temperatures. Honeywell’s Solstice zd refrigerant, with its ultra-low GWP, and Trane’s chillers, which are already being used to cool large buildings and infrastructure, provided the best combination of features to help us meet our energy and environmental goals.” The Channel Tunnel connects

Folkestone, Kent, in the United Kingdom with Coquelles, Pas-deCalais, in northern France. Without round-the-clock cooling, the heat generated by high-speed trains passing through the tunnel under the English Channel would drive indoor temperatures above 35°C, which is the maximum that can be reached while still running services in optimal condition. The new system ensures that ambient temperatures stay at or around 25°C. The system contains four Series E™ CenTraVac™ large-capacity (2600 kW to 14,000 kW) chillers from Trane, a leading global provider of indoor comfort solutions and services, and a brand of Ingersoll
Rand. These chillers are up to 10 percent more energy efficient than the next best chiller available in this tonnage. Two of the chillers have been operational in Sangatte, France, since 2016, and the remaining units at Shakespeare Cliff, U.K., have been operational since late October 2017. “The Series E is part of our EcoWise portfolio of products designed to lower environmental impact with next-generation, lowGWP refrigerants and high-efficiency operation – consistent with our company-wide commitment to introduce products that reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Jose La Loggia, vice president and general
manager of Trane in Europe. “These chillers have been successfully used in various applications across Europe and have helped our customers to achieve operational savings while lowering their environmental footprint, without compromising safety, reliability and performance.” Solstice® zd is part of the Honeywell family of Solstice-branded products that enables customers to reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing performance. It is a non-flammable refrigerant based on Honeywell’s hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) technology with a GWP of 1, which is 99.9 percent lower than any other solution in the market. It is designed for centrifugal chillers, which are most often used to cool large buildings or infrastructure projects, as well as for Organic Rankine Cycle systems and high-temperature heat pumps. “Worldwide demand is growing for solutions like Solstice zd, which offer the best combination of features to help companies achieve their environmental goals. ACCA Announces ANSI Review Period for Two Standards The Air Conditioning Contractors of America Educational Institute (ACCA-EI) Standards Task Team (STT) announces the third public review of BSR/ACCA 15 OBD - 201x (On Board Diagnostic Codes for HVACR Equipment) and the second public review of BSR/ACCA 4 QM – 201x (Maintenance of Residential HVAC Systems).
he 45-day public review period of the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) Standard started on August 24, 2018 and will close on October 8, 2018. The OBD Standard details the naming schema for designating fault and performance codes for heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) equipment. As defined and used in this proposed Standard, the naming schema standardizes fault and performance codes based on Location (with a Modifier), Mode of Operation, Process, Operating Parameter, and Performance Descriptor. The schema accommodates operating faults and/or performance characteristics that are commonly identified by today’s equipment diagnostic capabilities, and that may need to be identified as enhanced sensors and

controls are applied to future HVACR offerings. Additionally, this Standard provides for the incorporation of proprietary, manufacturer-specific information that individual manufacturers may choose to make available to field practitioners.
The 30-day public review of ACCA’s Quality Maintenance (QM) Standard also began on August 24, 2018 and will close on September 23. The QM Standard provides minimum requirements for the maintenance inspections performed by HVAC contractors for heating and air-conditioning equipment in residential buildings. The Standard includes checklist tasks for inspecting, testing, and measuring electrical, controls, mechanical, venting, air distribution, and piping
systems of residential HVAC systems. The checklists also provide recommended corrective actions which the HVAC contractor shall present to the homeowner to remedy identified faults like cleaning, adjusting, and/or replacing equipment and components on a periodic basis.
The American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) approval of ACCA manuals, procedures, and processes verifies that the principles of openness and due process have been followed in developing these materials, and that a consensus of those directly affected by the standards has been achieved. ACCA’s ANSI standards activity is overseen by our Standards Task Team, which forms subcommittees as needed to oversee specific standards development.

ACCA Releases Flammable Refrigerant Technical Bulletin The Air Conditioning Contractors of America announces the release of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems Using Flammable A3 Refrigerants, a technical bulletin addressing challenges technicians encounter when working with these products.
his bulletin focuses on ASHRAE-designated “A3” refrigerants that are commonly found in refrigeration systems, walk-in coolers, food merchandisers and service cases, beverage dispensers, vending machines, ice makers, and water fountains. It addresses issues including safety, installation, start-up, maintenance, parts replacement, refrigerant leak checking, transportation of units, cleanliness, and decommissioning.

The refrigerants specifically mentioned are R-290 (also known as propane), R-441A, R-600a (also known as isobutene), and R-1270. However, the Technical Bulletin applies to all “A3” refrigerants. As allowed by the U.S. EPA, these “A3” residential and commercial HVACR systems are small charge units; depending on the al-

5. RECREATE THE COACH IN YOU. Let’s admit it. Sometimes, no matter how hard we try we cannot always balance everything up. That’s why we need a back-up. Train someone to be a junior coach to fill in with the coaching efforts you can no longer do. It can serve as a great succession tool to build internal leadership and retain top talent. With all those five tips, there ain’t no reason anymore to miss coaching a team’s coaching habit.
