In pursuit of a sustainable future, companies continue to introduce new products that minimize energy consumption and the use of harmful substances.

T

Energy efficiency is a major priority of HVACR leaders as global demands continue to rise and challenges upsurge. Letting go of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and integrating robotics in the industry are the major trends in the industry this year. Making the HVACR cleaner more than ever is a mission in which every company wants to succeed.

R E V I S I T I N G 20 1 8 W I T H H VA C R

This milestone won’t be achieved if not because of the HVACR leaders who have dedicated themselves in transforming their companies and amplifying corporate responsibility. As a celebration of the industry’s success for this year, we will do a recap of the leaders whose efforts become pivotal in realizing the vision of their companies.

In February, we featured Sarmad Fakhri, Managing Director of Kingspan Insulation LLC which has achieved its third successive year on the CDPs Climate ‘A’ list through its efforts to reach net-zero energy use at its facilities by 2020. The March issue, meanwhile, tackled the contribution of Willis Haviland Carrier, the “fa-

In the fourth month, we saw how Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), through the leadership of Stephen Yurek, has improved the trade among HVACR and water heating equipment manufacturers in the world by developing industry-recognized performance standards. The following month, Raphael Khlat, president of Faisal Jassim Group, talked about how Faisal Jassim has risen to the epitome of its market to be one of the most preferred companies for clients and contractors in GCC countries.

The months of June and July revealed how Stephen Lisk, the new president of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and Talbot Gee, the CEO of Heating, Air-conditioning & Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI) have respectively made a huge impact in designing and developing high-quality buildings and in reducing the negative effects on the environment that can be attributed in the industry.

The month of August heard the story of Paul Stalknetch, the president of Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) and the organization’s contribution to energy efficiency and a cleaner and safer environment by creating standards and manuals. Meanwhile, it is

Abdulrahman Abdulaziz Khansaheb, Managing Director of Khansaleb Industries, who graced the cover of our September issue, sharing how one of its products, Spiralite became unrivalled as the best performing AC ductwork available in the global market.

Before the year ends, we were able to tackle how robotics can change the game in the HVACR industry and how architects will take over HVACR. In October, we saw that the industry has a very promising future in the hands or robotics as it can increase efficiency and productivity as well as boost product performance. The following month, we were able to discuss how green architecture can reduce the need of air-conditions through innovative designs that house natural cooling systems.

Truly, a big difference was made by these HVACR leaders and we believe that there are far more better innovations and ideas in store for the future. With this kind of devotion in providing only the best solutions for the global market, we will indeed expect a cooler place to live in.

Kingspan Kooltherm FM Duct Insulation and Kooltherm FM Pipe Insulation was installed in the Burj Al Arab, Dubai, U.A.E.

What are the latest trends in the HVAC industry? The latest trend in the HVAC industry is undoubtedly a movement towards products that comply with the new UAE Fire & Life Safety Code. It has placed a strong emphasis on fire testing and insurer approvals and we’ve seen this through the increased awareness of more stringent

fire testing and results. More focus has also been placed on the thermal performance of HVAC & Pipework insulation. The regulations used to focus much more around condensation concerns. However, with the imminent implementation of Al Sa’fat, BS 5422: 2009 — the method for specifying thermal insulating materials for pipes,

tanks, vessels, ductwork and equipment operating within the temperature range -40oC to +700oC — is becoming a mandatory consideration for HVAC insulation. Pipes and Ducts running through conditioned space must now be insulated in accordance with the British Standard 5422 to limit heat transfer. Those running through unconditioned space must comply with the thicknesses detailed in the

tables within section 502.11. This should have a very positive impact on the efficiency of buildings in the UAE. Throughout 2017, contractors have focused on module construction and prefabricated components that can be introduced easily into the construction process. This has also led to a move towards open to view building services, with HVAC ductwork and pipework being visible. These two movements show the market moving towards a more aesthetically pleasing HVAC system. Consultants are keen to be able to use the building services to enhance the style and feel of a building.

What are the iconic achievements of your company? Kingspan Group was among only 106 companies in the world to achieve CDP’s Climate A List. Kingspan’s third successive year on the ‘A’ list was achieved through its aims to reach net-zero energy use at its facilities by 2020. In 2016, Kingspan passed the halfway mark, with renewable energy use accounting for 57% of its total energy use in 2016. Specifically within the Insulation division, our Kingspan KoolDuct System was the first pre-insulated phenolic HVAC ductwork product to be UL listed as Class 1 Air Duct to a standard for Safety UL 181. Currently, it is also the only product in the world that is verified by SMACNA as an acceptable alternative to traditional sheet metal ducting. We demonstrated leading the way in phenolic ductwork and subsequently won Manufacturer of the Year in 2016 for this product. This was a fantastic achievement for us. What are your latest technologies or innovations? How will clients benefit from them? As part of Kingspan’s initiative to be a responsible manufacturer, the Dubai manufacturing plant installed a pentane tank to ensure its products were manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP). We are committed to developing products with the needs of the market, especially when these needs will reduce the impact of the construction industry on the environment. The Montreal Protocol is a protocol that aims to reduce and phase-out the use of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODSs), such as CFCs and HCFCs. Article 5 Countries that signed up to the Protocol committed themselves to the phasing out the use of Halons, CFCs and Carbon Tetrachloride by 2010. These being GCC countries. Additionally, Estidama rating systems in Abu Dhabi provide guidance. Under the Stewarding Materials section, one credit point is available providing all thermal insulation used has an ODP of zero and a low GWP. This issue is gaining momentum, with many of our projects and clients asking for zero ODP and low GWP, such as the Four Seasons Hotel, Abu Dhabi. We are committed to supporting local and international initiatives by supplying the market zero ODP and low GWP insulants and systems verified by global trade associations. Our products provide an easy route to compliance and help combat climate change and ozone depletion for specifiers, engineers and contractors.

Willis Carrier: Leaving A Legacy On The Air Conditioning Industry For decades, air conditioning has helped people from homes to businesses, bringing them comfort and increased productivity during extreme weathers and making hot summer weathers more bearable for everyone indoors. When you ask a person, more so an engineer or a contractor, what company comes first into mind when speaking about air-conditioning, one of the first names that would pop up, if not the first, is Carrier. 16

HVACR Leaders • February 2018

Carrier is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of Fortune 500-company United Technologies Corp. It has access to 84 manufacturing facilities worldwide and the support of nearly 124,000 employees operating in more than 170 countries on six continents. The company constantly builds its name in the industry as one which innovates and includes sustainability in its HVAC solutions.

HVACR LEADERS

the basics of modern air conditioning in 1902, Carrier has become the widest known brand in air-conditioning, as well as a world leader in the manufacturing and marketing of heating and ventilating equipment.

How Willis Carrier Became The “Father” of Modern Air Conditioning Born in 1876, Willis Haviland Carrier was an only child on his parents’ farm in Angola, NY. He was known for being a quiet, and gifted child who had the knack for solving problems easily. In a memoir, he wrote, “My mother told me to bring up a pan of apples from the cellar. She had me cut them into halves, quarters and eighths and add and subtract the parts. Fractions took on a new meaning and I felt as if no problems would be too hard for me—I’d simply break them down to something simple and they would be easy to solve.” Being equipped with a strong intellect, and a good learning foundation since childhood, Carrier was awarded a four-year scholarship to Cornell University where he then graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was then hired at Buffalo Forge Company, a firm that designed and manufactured steam engines and pumps. He was first assigned to design a heating system to dry lumber and coffee. Soon, he was doing his own experiment for heater design improvements and his efforts became so successful that the company promoted him to director of experimental engineering.

Throughout its history, Carrier has driven industries and shaped the HVAC industry. Now, its products and solutions cover residential systems, commercial systems, transport refrigeration, and commercial refrigeration, with an aim to promote global productivity, health, and personal comfort.

It was in 1902 that brought about Carrier’s biggest breakthrough. A printing company in New York City approached Buffalo Forge Company with a difficult problem. Due to the heat and humidity in the plant, the dimensions of the printing paper got affected which resulted in the misalignment of the colored inks. Carrier was able to solve this problem by building the first ever air-conditioning system. This new system created a stable atmospheric environment in the whole plant that resulted in the accurate ink alignment for the needed four-color printing.

Since its founder Willis Haviland Carrier invented

After advanced research, experimentation, and field testing, Carrier was able to patent his Apparatus for Treating Air in 1906. The airtreatment device was driven by a low-pressure centrifugal system that drew air through a filter and passed the air over coils that are filled with coolant. Then the cooled and dehumidified air will be brought out into the room that needs cooling. The hot air that is generated by the motor will be brought outside. Carrier has also discovered that “constant dew-point depression provided practically constant relative humidity,” which is a discovery that is vital to his design of an automatic control system. Soon in 1911, Carrier presented his study at the annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This was considered by many scientists to be the most significant document ever presented on air conditioning: the in-depth explanation of his Rational Psychrometric Formulae which included the 18

detailed physical relationships between, relative humidity, absolute humidity, and dew-point temperature. At the beginning of World War I, Buffalo Forge Company decided to strictly be a manufacturer. Thus, eliminating the need for research and development. So Carrier and six other engineers pooled their life savings to form the Carrier Engineering Corporation in 1915. Success came fast as the company continued to design and manufacture new refrigeration units of steadily increasing capacity to cool larger spaces. Soon, they were followed by home air-conditioning units. Carrier continued to refine is theories and got more patents before his death in 1950 at the age of 73. Today, Carrier Corporation continues to be the world’s largest manufacturer of climate control equipment. In 1952, Alfred University awarded Carrier an honorary doctorate of letters in recognition of

his contributions to science and industry. In addition to this, he was also admitted to the National inventors Hall of Fame and the Buffalo Science Museum Hall of Fame. Carrier’s invention has transformed the quality of life around the world through improving industrial productivity during unbearable summer months, protecting sensitive environments, and making extremely hot weathers bearable for everyone.

Carrier’s Expertise Regardless of climate, the applications of Carrier’s products in heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration are vast. Their impact goes beyond, with integrations in several key projects across the world. Like in residential systems, Carrier meets the demands of efficient and comfortable homes through the brilliant engineering of its heaters

and air-conditioning systems. The company offers furnaces, central air conditioners, heat pumps, ductless system, humidifiers, ventilators, ultraviolet lamps, air filters and monitors, which all uphold high energy efficiency and best indoor air quality. For high-rise buildings, Carrier sets the standards for performance, energy efficiency and sustainability through the HVAC products. It offers comprehensive HVAC solutions, through a whole building approach, that the establishments require for optimal performance. The movement of food, pharmaceuticals, biologics, and industrial chemicals requires refrigeration, and Carrier understands the technology for this more than any other company. It designs and manufactures transport refrigeration systems that allow for precise control of temperature and humidity in

order to preserve different types of perishable cargo regardless of mode – by sea or by land. Moreover, Carrier offers cold chain monitoring and logistics security to ensure businesses that the products being transported will arrive in the quality and quantity that they are supposed to arrive. Not only does Carrier specialize in transport refrigeration, it caters to refrigeration in retail with products like refrigerated and freezer display cases, service counters, refrigerated multidecks and semi-verticals, wall-sited cases and islands, vertical freezers, plug-in cabinets, and refrigeration systems and controls. Stores, no matter the size, are ensured to keep their products fresh and safe. Other than being a famous name in refrigeration, Carrier has build its name as a committed company towards sustainability. It was founding company number one of the 20

U.S. Green Building Council in 1993, and the only company in the world to be a founding member of the U.S., Argentina, China, India, Singapore and France Green Building Councils. For Carrier, it’s not just about business but helping the environment through its reduction of the greenhouse gas impact, its leadership in the phase-out of ozone-depleting refrigerants, and its introduction of many energy-efficient HVAC solutions. What started out as a breakthrough in solving a difficult problem for a printing company, Willis Haviland Carrier’s invention changed lives, saved businesses and made several environments easier to live on. His legacy continues to inspire and motivate the company and its thousands of employees to continue to excel in the fields of air-conditioning and manufacturing and staying committed to its goal of achieving sustainability.

The latest trends in the HVACR industry I’m proud that our industry works hard to stay ahead of the curve, using the resources of their trade association to bring leaders together to ensure that we always know what issues are on the horizon and how we might deal with them together, as an industry. Over the past several decades, we have strengthened our commitment to developing highly energy efficient, innovative equipment to better serve our customers and the environment. We know that HVACR and water heating equipment are the biggest consumers of energy in most households, but at the same time, they are vital to our health and well-being. Our member companies have consistently taken the initiative to develop more efficient technologies to reduce the impact of these products on the environment. In this exclusive interview with its President and CEO, Stephen R. Yurek, learn more about the organization, their dedication to not only serve their customers but also help the environment as well. The challenges, the obstacles and the solution in making HVACR environmentally friendly For the past ten years, our industry has recognized the adverse environmental effects of many of the refrigerants used in our products and equipment and we have worked with

our government and with governments and industry around the world to advocate for a global solution. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, signed in late 2016 and awaiting submittal to, and confirmation by, the U.S. Senate, is that solution. Even as we began to advocate for a global solution, we embarked on an ambitious research program to identify alternatives to high global warmingpotential refrigerants so that we would be ready if and when a global solution were reached. Our Low-GWP Alternative Refrigerants Evaluation Program (AREP) is an industrywide cooperative research program designed to identify and evaluate promising alternative refrigerants for major product categories. These include air conditioners, heat pumps, dehumidifiers, chillers, water heaters, ice makers, and refrigeration equipment. Since this program began, we have joined forces with ASHRAE, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the California Air Resources Board, to further evaluate the best low-GWP refrigerant candidates and develop a pathway for their use. The program, which is in its final phase, has identified the most promising alternatives, which are being evaluated through real-world testing before being recommended to safety code developers for approval in the United States.

The latest technologies that disrupt the HVACR industry This is an interesting question, because in general technology is a friend to the industry. I cannot really think of a technology that disrupts our industry, but I can think of many that help make our products and equipment more useful and valuable to our customers. Technologies such as smart thermostats, individual heating and cooling zone controls, variable speed compressors and fans save consumers energy and enhance comfort, and thermal storage technologies save energy for businesses by using off-peak power to provide cooling technologies for buildings.

Redefining the Future of HVAC Industry:

Raphael Khlat,

the Man Behind Faisal Jassim Group The HVAC industry should be growing and evolving. Innovations should be destroying the grasps of mediocrity in our markets, creating opportunities to conquer and grow as a business. But we are in such dire times where businesses barely take notice of change and progress and become satisfied provided they have the market share. Faisal Jassim Group, however, chooses to break the chains of such path to forge its own. Known for service that screams exemplary in all aspects, world-class products and a company culture that embodies their core values, Faisal Jassim has risen to the epitome of its market to be one of the most preferred companies for clients and contractors in GCC countries. And through its shining beacon, its president, Mr. Raphael Khlat, they are set to blaze a trail into the future by investing in innovation and creating their own brand. They wanted to steer away from being traders or stockist to being solution providers. They view the horizons ahead of them as an open market where power lies behind the freedom to move between markets. Also, they break their boundaries to enter new territories even beyond GCCs. Still, all of these will be nothing but a dream, if not for the story of a man who built the company from the bottom ground up.

Engineering as Building Blocks As a child, Raphael had always viewed the world through the lenses of insatiable curiosity as he learned new things. And as he scaled the ladders of higher education, he found engineering as his life’s calling. “I always liked learning how things worked. When I was young, I loved to build mechanical toys and spent a lot of time in my father’s workshop. I was fascinated with gear mechanisms and their control. I like knowing how things work in detail. This is a good part of what I like in engineering,” Raphael stated as his reason for choosing engineering as his path towards success. The air conditioning business became Khlat’s 34

initial training grounds, who had acquired his degree in electrical engineering then. He became allied with different companies where he honed his weapons in the technical and marketing battlegrounds. Through his experiences in the vast and numerous fields of the industry, he learned more about the ins and outs of the realms of HVAC. Long working hours and time pressure characterized the learning years of his days being tossed by the torrential waves of the industry. It was his dedication, hard work and persistence that sowed the seeds and made him bore fruit as a professional. The result was him being at the head of the armada of Faisal Jassim. Through the years, he was able to convert a three-staff cube of an office into the HVAC empire we now know today with over a thousand of employees.

Concrete Mix of Success “We want to be an expert in everything we do. If you want to create a product, you want to do it very well,” Raphael stated regarding Faisal Jassim’s recipe for success. Grabbing opportunities is the true ace of this card game. According to Raphael, great brands with local added value score big in the market in GCC countries. “We started by figuring out how to do more locally with our pump products,” he recalled an opportunity when he tried to sell a pumping package that lost the interest of contractors

because of its high price and complexity. He continued, “I loved the product and I believed in it, so I invested, deployed people and localized resources to build economically pumping packages to our market needs and standards.” Raphael believes that when an opportunity arises, it should inspire us to work even harder to conquer the battlefields of the market. As his elixir in battle to keep him invigorated and confident, he imparts, “The drive of the team is to reach objectives whatever commitment it takes. It is a matter of resilience and hard work especially when invested on a brand that represents us and we are proud of.”

CIBSE: To Improve Is To Change

by Stephen Lisk, CIBSE President 2018 - 2019 My name is Stephen Lisk. I am the new president of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

52 20

I’m new to this role, in fact, I’ve been in the HVACR Leaders • June 2018

post for less than a month, so I’m glad of this opportunity to tell you about what I think makes CIBSE such an important institution in the global construction sector. I’ll also outline my ambitions for CIBSE in my presidential year (2018 -2019)..

HVACR LEADERS

It is important to say at the outset that I’m a ‘lighter’. This makes me very unusual as a CIBSE president, since most of my predecessors have come from a mainly engineering background. My appointment is a reflection of the way that CIBSE is evolving as an organization to focus on collaboration. It requires the combined expertise of many specialists to design the

high quality buildings that we aspire to live and work in, and I think it is a huge strength of the organization that we include so many specialist groups within our membership. Lighting has been a discipline at the heart of CIBSE since the beginning. The organization has its UK origins over a century ago, when technical solutions to building comfort were beginning to emerge.

The era saw the formation of the Institution of Heating and Ventilating Engineers in 1897 and the Illuminating Engineering Society in 1909. These two institutions were amalgamated in 1976 to form the Chartered Institution of Building Services, and in 1985, “Engineers” was added to the name. What this potted history illustrates is that lighting and occupant comfort have been integral to the Institution from the outset. Today approximately 15% of CIBSE’s membership is made up of members of the Society of Light and Lighting (SLL). Alongside lighting, other sectors of the building services industry represented within the organisation include the Society of Public Health Engineers (SoPHE), the Society of Digital Engineers (SDE), the Society of Façade Engineering and the Institute of Local Exhaust Ventilation Engineers.

It is a huge strength of CIBSE as an institution that these specialists can come together in a single organisation to talk and exchange ideas without the commercial pressures they

would be under in their day jobs. Pan-industry collaboration ensures that buildings meet the needs of the people who live and work in them, wherever they are in the world. CIBSE’s region in the UAE launched in 2016 and is led by a group of leading Building Services Engineers based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. More information about CIBSE activities and events in UAE at cibse.org/UAE. While CIBSE has its origins in the UK, it is now a truly global organisation with members in 100 countries. These members are represented by regional groups in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Hong Kong, the Republic of Ireland and Australia and New Zealand, in addition to the UK. In fact, the man I succeeded as President of CIBSE Peter Y Wong was chair of the Hong Kong branch. In his term as president, Peter believed sharing information and knowledge is crucial for the future of the building services industry. In a fast-changing world where everyone seems to be trying to achieve more in less time, it is

essential for CIBSE to evolve fast. In response to this challenge CIBSE is developing new ways of engaging with its membership. Our online presence has developed fast and I am particularly proud of CIBSE’s Knowledge Portal. We were one of the first industry bodies to publish all of our guidance documents online, making the wealth of knowledge and expertise represented by our publications easily accessible to our members across the world.

collaboration achieved through the willingness for our expert members to get together to discuss, debate and argue in order to reach a consensus. It is in this interaction that the meaning of our institution emerges. One of the highlights from the last year for us was CIBSE’s first Build2Perform Live. This was a genuinely revolutionary approach to the traditional conference format. Instead of a handful of lecturers presenting to a passive audience we had 1,400 hundred people led in debate and discussion by 170 speakers. It was a vibrant, lively two days filled with people

rewarding employers who support new entrants to the industry. In the middle of these endeavors stands the Building Performance Awards. At its heart, CIBSE is about creating the best built environments so it is no surprise that the annual Awards, framed to reward the very best examples of high quality buildings are a highlight of the CIBSE year. Last year’s event saw more entries than ever before, with a particularly pleasing number participating in our category for International projects.

58 26

What is particularly important is that much of CIBSE’s activity has the objective of helping to share specialist knowledge across all specialisations that contribute to creating high performance buildings. CIBSE has HVACR Leaders • June 2018

13,000 people in its special interest groups, of which half are not members of the Institution. Publication of documents on a wide range of subjects is essential to underpin CIBSE’s stated mission which is “to support the Science, Art and Practice of building services engineering, by providing our members and the public with first class information and education services and promoting the spirit of fellowship which guides our work” Change and the need to be able to adapt to change, is one of the themes I’ll be building on in my role as President because I believe that in this fast-changing world CIBSE needs to be agile and responsive to changing circumstances if it is to best serve the needs of its members.

HVACR LEADERS

It is an important mission because every one of our members has the power to change people’s lives and make the built environment better; whether that is through the projects they design, the products they make, the buildings they manage, operate, maintain and refurbish, the codes and guidance they write or the standards and regulations they contribute to help to improve.

About CIBSE CIBSE publishes Guidance and Codes which provide best practice advice and are internationally recognised as authoritative design guidance for building services. Enough about CIBSE, what about me? I have been in the lighting industry for over 30 years and I’m as passionate now about good lighting as I was when I first started. I’m originally from New Zealand, which was where I studied illumination engineering and first became aware of the impact good lighting can have on people. I believe that light is a basic and determining factor in the configuration of architectural space. The right use of light can create more comfortable, more genuine, more human, more sustainable and more beautiful places to enjoy life. Light that is not just functional, but light that invigorates, lifts the spirit, and touches peoples’ lives every day. I emigrated to the UK in 1999, which is where my company One Eighty Light is based. It is an architectural lighting company so we get involved in both indoor and outdoor lighting for commercial projects such as offices and hotels, high end residential schemes and even expensive yachts - we design and supply to offer a full service to customers. I’m a fellow of the Society of Light and Lighting. It is a great organisation to be a part of for anyone with an interest in lighting. Its aims are: • To promote the benefits of good lighting, especially in the built environment. • To be at the forefront of developing lighting as an integral part of a low-energy and sustainable future. • To provide professional recognition to those in light and lighting. • To establish and promote good practice in lighting design and engineering in all their facets. • To provide a forum where people interested in all aspects of light and lighting can come together. • To set and maintain standards in education for light and lighting. • To advise government and other authoritative bodies on the best use and application of light and lighting. As a lighting engineer why be a member of CIBSE? For me it’s about being in a community of people who are like minded in their motivation to improve the built environment. Institutions and societies are about the members – that’s where the magic originates. Getting people together in a room to review an update to a technical guidance or piece of advice ensures debate around the concepts. This coming together is what it’s all about - enhancing the debate to ensure the most effective outcome. My journey at CIBSE started with volunteering for the SLL by joining the communications and marketing committee. It was an important step in enabling me to participate in events, meet new people and to play my part in a diverse, global organisation with an aim of ensuring that the buildings we design today meet the needs of the people who live and work in them. I’m looking forward to continuing my CIBSE journey in my year as President.

a lot of uncertainty and different ways this can go in terms of how the industry will trend, and many ways policy can be implemented. We find ourselves in this interesting balancing act where the need for certainty in the long term is getting us to a point where we are

going to be a lot of rumors, suggestions, or innuendo regarding what is going to be banned, what products are being transitioned away from or transitioned to, and we just don’t know a lot of that information right now. In terms of the channel itself, and especially with HARDI being primarily focused on the wholesale distributors, there is a focus on the continuing evolution of how people and businesses like to do business. This is having an impact across the entire channel. We have our contractors being asked now to do laboronly installs for products that customers procured themselves. We have distributors being expected to provide Amazon-like online experiences. We have the expectation of more just-in-time delivery and even more one to twohour delivery these days, which for bigger and more complex products is certainly harder to achieve. The way business is expected to be done, is being done, and can be done are all changing at such a rapid pace at this point in time. Our market also continues to grow, and everybody needs to grow. Competition is quite fierce in our industry, so you have a lot of companies in the industry experimenting with different ways to grow. Maybe that means contractors performing some of the functions of distributors, or manufacturers doing things that contractors might do, or distributors expanding to fulfill the functions of one of the two, or both. Right now, there’s a lot of blurring of lines and fast-moving changes. But bottom line, the one constant that does remain true is, it all still comes down to value. The companies that win will ultimately be the ones who deliver the most value. And that’s where HARDI tries to stay focused, helping our members identify where they can provide more value, and be the best in the world at delivering it. actually eagerly awaiting added regulation, at least domestically here in the U.S. It has also been encouraging to see the wave of Kigali Amendment ratifications seen on the global scale over the past year. But we’ve been working with industry partners and our counterpart trade associations to get the best policies implemented for a smooth and predictable transition, and frankly, in a way where we can be most effective in working with the regulators to achieve the best policy. In the meantime, there is a lot of uncertainty – there’s

say no to every form of regulation. That’s just not going to work anymore. Our industry is a great example of one coordinating with regulators, because smart and market-based regulation can actually help. But when the regulation starts getting beyond the affordable capabilities of the manufacturers or consumers who ultimately have to buy them, we start losing all the economies of scale and again everyone loses in that matter. There are interesting things that are being done in the channel that probably can’t be regulated, but the intense focus on training and development of not only system designers, but also installers, to improve total system performance and total system efficiency, provide great delivered efficiency of all those systems, and learn the technological developments from manufacturers (that are enabling really smart blended systems rather than just a one-size-fits-all application) all open the door to building systems toward very specific application needs. As this trend

grows in the industry, it will get us to having that positive, “cleaner” effect, but the challenge is getting to where we need to be across the channel to make this progress truly industrywide. What we are seeing in the marketplace is that the best-trained and most-knowledgeable contractors in particular are the ones who are winning the most. And that’s good – you have a market really driving value for them to know what they are doing, to do it right the first time, and to do it in the most efficient way possible for the customer. So I think we have a lot of opportunity as an industry there to continue to grow in this direction as well. I do think that the world’s reliance on our products is not going to change and will actually continue to grow. But any negative impact on the environment that can be attributed to our industry has already drastically been reduced and will continue to do so going forward.

disrupt the HVACR industry Everybody – and not just us in the HVACR industry – is trying to figure out what the evolution and impact of the “connected home” will be. I think there are still two different aspects of this topic. Regarding the idea that there is a single interface for multiple systems within a home or building, it’s achieved in a percentage of commercial buildings but it’s still a work in progress at the residential level. But no one yet has a clear, complete solution that can effectively manage all aspects of that environment. At the same time, everyone is rapidly trying to. And the question is – is there a single firm who is ultimately going to win it? Our products are generally the most expensive and the most complex in a home or building. And I would say our industry probably should be greater leaders and drivers in this space, but when you are the biggest and most complex and generally expensive system built into an environment, you have your hands full already. It’s kind of hard to get outside your lane too far, but it’s a huge disruptor.

On a supply chain side, we at HARDI spend a lot of time thinking about technology and applications for distributors, and one of the biggest concerns we have is distributors trying feverishly to implement new technology, from online sales vehicles to inventory management systems. We have a role as a trade association to continue to expose our members to advanced technology applications, and how to identify and select good partners for implementation. I’m also glad that HARDI has a good relationship with ASHRAE, and we work closely with aspects of the engineering community – especially around policy issues. But one thing I think is going to be essential going forward is creative system and solution design. The HVACR industry doesn’t move as fast as, say, Silicon Valley, but new products and technology applications are moving pretty darn quick for us right now. It’s going to be the engineering community not only on the front-end of design, but also on the application side convincing building owners to try new things.

The Untold Story of Air Conditioning Contractors of America

In this exclusive interview with the president and CEO of ACCA, Paul T. Stalknecht soutlined their projects, past achievements, present technologies and the future goals of the organization. 12

HVACR LEADERS

Describe the company’s past achievements and how does it overcome challenges? The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) has been representing the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning contracting industry for nearly 100 years, but was incorporated in its present form in the late 1960s.

This problem is exacerbated by federal and state policies and incentives pushing consumers to purchase more energy efficient equipment, based on laboratory conditions, but disregarding the need for proper - “quality”installations to achieve desired energy efficiency goals. Each time equipment efficiency standards increase, so too does the price of the equipment.

One of the challenges professional contractors face is the race to the bottom, driven by consumers looking for the lowest price.

As prices go up, customers look for the lowest price. Plenty of unqualified people can be found, willing to cut corners and install a HVACR Leaders • August 2018

installation practices cause the equipment to consume, on average, 30-40 percent more energy. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates nearly half of all HVAC installations have not been installed properly. Government agencies responsible for energy efficiency standards must do more to educate consumers about the benefits of hiring a professional who will install a system correctly. This includes, among other items, proper equipment sizing, addressing duct leakage, and correcting airflow issues.

To ensure contractors and technicians have the tools and training to properly install, service, and maintain HVACR systems, ACCA invests heavily to create unrivaled technical offerings. ACCA has created dozens of ANSI recognized manuals and standards that teach the proper installation, service, and maintenance protocols for residential and commercial HVACR applications. No other contracting organization has the technical acumen that ACCA has, and we are proud to lead the industry’s efforts to promote Quality Installation practices and contractor excellence.

How does your organization contribute to a cleaner, efficient and safer environment? Poorly installed, designed, and commissioned systems, which EPA says impacts half of all systems, will use more energy, decrease indoor air quality, contribute to refrigerant leaks, reduces equipment lifespan, and leads to customer dissatisfaction. ACCA contributes to energy efficiency and a cleaner and safer environment by creating standards and manuals that help contractors properly size equipment, ensure ducts are designed to deliver precise air flow, and decrease opportunities for refrigerant leaks. There’s no trade secret or advanced technology needed to deliver a Quality Installation. It is simply installing a system according to the manufacturers installation requirements, which ACCA has incorporated in to the ACCA/ANSI Quality Installation standard. Where is ACCA headed? ACCA is investing in products, training, and events that focus the upcoming generation of contracting managers and owners. ACCA is evolving to ensure these emerging leaders have an association to call home. This is an issue many trade organizations face today, but ACCA is ahead of the curve. We have several events planned this year, and next, to help young contractors become leaders in the industry, and to help business owners transition from parent to child. There are few good leadership training programs that help contractors through these transitions. ACCA is working with the George Washington Leadership Institute to create a high-level seminar focused on this challenge – which is quite prevalent in the contracting industry. What are the notable projects? Besides being known for technical products, ACCA also has robust business training and government relations programs. We bring all of this together at ACCA’s annual meeting, which is scheduled in San Antonio, March 4-6, 2019, and our Fall Forums, scheduled for November 6-9, 2018 in Fort Worth.

We get a lot of our ideas through ACCA’s Contractor Forum, which is where contractors ask each other questions, share new ideas, and offer to help each other out. ACCA keeps an eye on the forum to get an idea of what contractors need from us. We go about working with contractors who have overcome certain challenges or addressed a need in their company to create new membership programs. We pride ourselves on being a contractor-driven and focused association. We also have several task forces operating that provide guidance to ACCA staff for our annual meeting and membership needs, as well as a robust committee structure. We have about a dozen committees that are responsible for developing ideas and products that staff manages.

My beloved wife passed away in 1999, so I raised my two girls and son for many years as a single father. As the President and CEO of ACCA, I really enjoy spending time with our members, learning about their challenges, and meeting with their families and staff. ACCA members are some of the best businessmen and businesswomen in the country, and I learn something new from them every day. They are leaders in the industry and their communities. They keep me motivated to do my part to better the contracting industry. Define your leadership style I like to give my staff the freedom and flexibility they need to help contractors. I provide guidance and vision for them, but ACCA’s professional staff are wellsuited to get into the weeds. They are the experts, and I expect them to produce quality products and offer superior customer service to our members and non-members. I try to get out of their way and let them do their professional jobs. One of the things I instill in them to not let the fear of failure paralyze their thinking and action. We mess up occasionally and we learn from those mistakes together. I don’t fault my staff for trying something. But, what bothers me most as a boss is people who refuse to try something at all and take no initiative. The best people are those willing to try something new, with a vision of doing something great for the association and not afraid of the bumps along the way. As long as they put their mind to the task!

Energy Efficiency I would also like to share some interesting information about energy efficiency: 1. Circular ductwork has had a big impact in the market – in Scandinavia the use of circular ductwork has increased from 5% to 85% in the last 40 years, driven almost entirely by energy cost increases, and in the USA the recently completed multi-billion-dollar refurbishment of the Pentagon had a mandated 35% energy saving, a substantial portion of which was achieved by converting all the AC ductwork from rectangular to circular or flat oval. 2. In the recently completed major refurbishment of the Empire State Building in New York, the CEO instructed that all leading-edge energy saving technologies be introduced, notwithstanding any cost premium. The resulting payback was 1.61 years and his response was a statement that he would have been financially, operationally and environmentally irresponsible to have considered anything else.

Robotics in manufacturing AC & heaters will steal our jobs? In modern homes and contemporary buildings, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning or what is collectively known as the HVAC system is also an essential component of the structure nowadays. It is because the weather has become so unpredictable due to climate change. The lifespan of an HVAC system, more so, its efficiency and cost-effectiveness, is anchored on its regular maintenance. HVAC system cleaning contractors utilize a wide array of tools in carrying out a cleaning project and they employed highly trained technicians to do the job from inspection to the actual cleaning. To lessen indoor pollution and maintain a good indoor air quality, the major components of the HVAC system such as the air handling unit, supply ductwork, and the return ductwork/exhaust must be routinely checked. The maintenance of an HVAC system is banal yet routine; hence, it is imperative that HVAC professionals are equipped with both knowledge and skills to do the job. There are a lot of occupational risks and hazards that come with the job such as electrocution, getting burns, cuts, scrapes, and punctures, fatigue, asbestos exposure, falls, crushing 20 112

injuries, and other accidents as a result of safety violations. These catastrophic scenarios have prompted technological engineers to come up with equipment that could aid HVAC personnel if not, could potentially replace them. Robotics Design Inc. designed and manufactured ANATROLLER. With a built-in high definition rotating camera, this miniature maneuverable robot can inspect, brush, coat, and disinfect ducts. This technological development has indeed reduced the work-related perils that an HVAC professional can be exposed to in every cleaning project. Another noteworthy technological concept is machine learning which can be incorporated in the HVAC systems. Machine learning pertains to algorithms essential to modern programming. Forget artificial intelligence because it is a thing of the past. Machine learning centers in the idea that computer systems have the ability to learn or train with data without being scripted or programmed. The HVAC system is composed of a number of equipment and

configurations therefore, it is not hard to imagine how complex the integration of all those is. This is where machine learning steps in. By using all the HVAC data available for a particular building and treating it as an interrelated system, it is possible to identify patterns and relationships that even human ability cannot.

HVACR attack A serious threat to security Buildings and other similar establishments have been blessed by the power of HVAC building automation systems (BAS). It saves a lot of energy for mechanical engineers to adjust and repair the ventilation and cooling systems. The use of digital controls is an advantage for many building engineers because microprocessors made controllers small and more powerful. BAS can monitor energy usage in electricity, water, gas or fuel. BAS is very helpful in business. Fastfood chains are said to be the first one to adapt this system because of the imbalance of temperature in the kitchen and customers’ dining area. It provides efficiency in controlling air-conditioning, heating comfort and process systems. BAS is networked to the internet or a standalone system where controllers can control the functions using their own internal processors. However, using BAS has also 22

disadvantages. Hackers can attack the system which can compromise information. The dedicated network of clients for BAS connection can be vulnerable to distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. This attack intentionally paralyzes the computer system. Researchers have found out a new attack technique called “HVACker.” This technique allows attackers to send commands using temperature changes and convert it to binary code. HVACR BAS is also very helpful in hospitals as it maintains good indoor air quality and thermal condition suitable for the patients. However, if not secured, this HVAC system can cause a threat to patients’ security and safety. In 2009, a hospital security guard was arrested because of accessing the HVAC system and the personal information system of a Texas hospital. According to experts, manipulating the HVACR system can affect the condition of patients who are sensitive to changes in temperature.

If hospitals are targeted by these attacks, what more for government offices? Government data breach can cause worse scenarios such as election fraud or war. It can also disrupt government services and put trade systems at risk. HVACR system can become an open-door for intruders to penetrate into the system and they can easily hide as well to prevent detection. These attacks are detrimental and solutions are being offered by cybersecurity firms. You can avoid these HVACR attacks by being wise in choosing an outside service contractor and by maintaining secure data systems and practices. The company should also make sure that the building automation system is not connected to any sensitive information.

Probably.

Companies are now investing predominantly in green energy resources. As more businesses acquire ‘environmentally-friendly’ mantras, industry leaders will definitely get hooked to this idea.

Birth of Bioclimatic Architecture

Bioclimatic architecture, also regarded as a passive-cooling technique, has been practiced since 1769. This approach connects the building’s design with nature. To provide interior thermal comfort, climate and environmental conditions are considered.

With the rise of Bioclimatic Architecture, should the HVAC industry be shaking?

If bioclimatic architecture has been done before, then why the in-

Some say that this trend in building design will eventually put an end to air-conditioners. The magnitude of this innovation can be aptly felt in Southeast Asia as companies like T3 Architecture Asia have already started integrating this concept in their projects. Since most areas in the said region have a warm climate throughout the year, this trend will possibly become the next big thing in the industry.

dustry did not favor such a beautiful concept?

It is because of air-conditioners. Since it started booming in the 1920s, interest in bioclimatic architecture declined. The influence of Willis Haviland Carrier’s invention 115

with the goal of becoming one of the ‘greenest skyrise’ in the world. And it did. The Tower stood beyond its capacity of providing a comfortable business place. It became one of the hallmarks of architectural ambitions that have a heart on sustainability, workplace comfort and benefit to the community.

One commendable thing about this building is that it steered away from what is usually the expected outcome of a high-rise building sit120

Making this choice is relevant to how the sunlight naturally brightens up the place without gaining solar heat. Its windows are also controlled to allow natural ventilation, which is incorporated through a solar chimney that vacuums the warm air out. Water recycling and treatment are also present here.

In this project, it became evi-
