he HVACR industry has long since been a partner in giving people a comfortable way of living. Air conditioning units, in particular, are very in-demand products in the tropical parts of Asia. Many people cannot survive a day without an aircon open especially during summer when the temperature could rise to 400 and higher.

T

However, it is also one of the industries being blamed for environmental degradation. Well, almost all industries have a fair share in the prevalence of climate change but the HVACR industry have crossed the line especially during the time when the use of chlorofluorocarbon (CFCs) became rampant.

Many strategies in the sector have been developed to counter the negative effects of the products made. Refrigerators and air-cons are now using inverter energy to lower energy consumption. Hydrochlorofluorocarbons, which is said to be unharmful to the ozone layer, are now being widely used to completely replace CFCs.

Bioclimatic Architecture Onwards: R E B I R T H O F A S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y C H A M P I O N

Despite these actions, it seems that these improvements only mask the sector to become a “slightly better” version. The world today, facing the onslaught of a 20 increase in temperature, does not need that kind of deal. The choice to progress on product delivery was good but there is definitely something better than that.

Bioclimatic architecture, which was introduced even before air conditions, is a promising feat in the architecture industry. This type of architecture is climate-responsive as it integrates design and ventilation to provide the maximum comfort people can experience without utilizing an artificial ventilation system. It is indeed a cost-efficient solution for a sustainable future.

In this feature, we will elaborate on how Bioclimatic Architecture can make a positive impact on the world’s sustainable energy goals. The potentials of this innovation will be analyzed and companies investing in this development will be cited.

And as a bonus for this month’s release, we are to give you a peek featuring different facets of the life of an engineer— starring hard facts in the professional work environment, life hacks and useful leadership guide.

You wouldn’t also want to miss survival tips on overcoming the most dreadful interview questions to land your dream job. All that and more exciting surprises as we introduce you to Generation G and their unique quirks and work personalities that will surely play a vital role in creating the biggest and most disruptive innovation into your company. All of that and more from this issue. Cheers to you, engineer!

Probably.

Companies are now investing predominantly in green energy resources. As more businesses acquire ‘environmentally-friendly’ mantras, industry leaders will definitely get hooked to this idea.

Birth of Bioclimatic Architecture

Bioclimatic architecture, also regarded as a passive-cooling technique, has been practiced since 1769. This approach connects the building’s design with nature. To provide interior thermal comfort, climate and environmental conditions are considered.

With the rise of Bioclimatic Architecture, should the HVAC industry be shaking?

Some say that this trend in building design will eventually put an end to air-conditioners. The magnitude of this innovation can be aptly felt in Southeast Asia as companies like T3 Architecture Asia have already started integrating this concept in their projects. Since most areas in the said region have a warm climate throughout the year, this trend will possibly become the next big thing in the industry.

It is because of air-conditioners. Since it started booming in the 1920s, interest in bioclimatic architecture declined. The influence of Willis Haviland Carrier’s invention

Certificate of Appreciation from Indonesian Government for Forest Conservation Activities on the Island of Java “Forests for the Air” Project That Extends to 7 Global Locations

D

aikin Industries, Ltd. recently received a certificate of appreciation from the Indonesian government for its ten-year environmental and social contribution activities on the Island of Java. In addition to the reforestation of the area serving as the water source for Jakarta, the capitol city of Indonesia, this recognition acknowledges the contribution Daikin has made to solving social issues affecting the local community, including poverty and education. In 2008, Daikin partnered with Conservation International (hereinafter referred to as “CI”), an international nongovernmental organization, and started forest conservation activities at Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park on the Island of Java, Indonesia. Logging and the cultivation of farmland as a means for local residents to earn a living had been a cause of deforestation for this area with the underlying issue being the poverty faced by the residents. To conserve the forest in a sustainable manner, integrated support is essential,

33

S P E C I A L

F E A T U R E

not only for planting trees, but also for improving environmental awareness among local residents and establishing a local infrastructure. For this reason, Daikin, in cooperation with CI, has been promoting agroforestry* together with afforestation, while continuing to implement such measures as agricultural support to eliminate the dependency of local residents 34

on logging for a livelihood, environmental education for the local community, a crackdown on illegal logging and poaching, and consensus building and training for all of these. Furthermore, Daikin created facilities for a pico-hydro power generator that operates by water drawn from the forest to the village. Ten years have passed since the start of this initiative, and local resi-

dents are united in moving forward in forest conservation activities. This has led to 120,000 trees being planted to present along with the rejuvenation of approximately 300 hectares of forest. Based on the model for forest conservation activity that began in Indonesia, Daikin has broadened activities since 2014 to seven global locations as “Forests for the Air”

As Daikin conducts air conditioning business globally, we continue to provide healthy, comfortable air spaces while responding to the needs of each region.

Project. In addition to Indonesia, the company has also been working to solve region-specific social issues through forest conservation in Brazil, China, Cambodia, Liberia, and India as well as on the Shiretoko Peninsula in Japan. Through these activities, Daikin will contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) through conservation of approximately 11 million hectares of forests worldwide by 2024 and the reduction of more than 7 million tons in CO2 emissions. Reason for Daikin’s Involvement in Conservation Activities As Daikin conducts air con-

ditioning business globally, we continue to provide healthy, comfortable air spaces while responding to the needs of each region. Not limiting ourselves to the interior spaces of buildings, we began forest conservation activities with the desire to help people sustainably live healthy and comfortable lives on a global scale. Because forests function to keep the atmospheric temperature from rising by the water vapor provided from tree leaves and purify the atmosphere by photosynthesis and respiration, we call them “nature’s air conditioner.” Through preservation of forests worldwide and the fostering of air, we intend to protect the global en-

vironment and contribute to local communities. We also continue committed to developing and promoting environmentally-conscious products and services in the future that include energy-saving air conditioners and refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP). At the same time, we will work to curtail greenhouse gas emissions and solve social issues by activities such as forest conservation as we contribute to the global environment from both aspects of business activities and social contribution.

Samsung Shows Its Commitment to Going Green by Building Handmade Eco Trails in Taiwan The two-year Hehuan North Peak Trail Adoption Program aims to protect Taiwan’s alpine environment through natural rehabilitation methods and the use of local materials n 2016, Samsung Electronics’ “UP TO 3742- Top of the Ridge” exhibition used Samsung Galaxy mobile devices to capture the stunning beauty of Taiwanese mountain ridges and to present them to gallery visitors. In 2018, Samsung Taiwan has continued to honor its commitment to the protecting the environment by enlisting corporate volunteers to combat erosion at Hehuan North Peak. Volunteers each carried 1kg of rock and soil to repair paths by hand, creating eco trails and raising awareness of environmental sustainability. Samsung Electronics Taiwan has also officially launched a two-year maintenance program for mountain trails in the Hehuan North Peak area.

I

“Samsung Electronics Taiwan is committed to environmental conservation in Taiwan and giving back to society through community engagement,” said Randy Lee, Head

40

of Innovation Group, Samsung Electronics Taiwan. “The adoption program went through nearly a year of internal planning and preparations before we began negotiations with the Taroko National Park Management Office. In mid-July, the first Samsung volunteers went to Hehuan North Peak to repair the eco trails by hand and thereby make a small contribution to environmental conservation in Taiwan.”

Samsung Taiwan Joins Forces with Taroko National Park to Help Maintain Its Wonderful Mountains and Forests Hehuan North Peak is ranked as one of Taiwan’s most beautiful mountains and is considered a “friendly” entry-level peak. numbers, the canopy has sustained severe damage, resulting in serious erosion to the hiking trails. “On certain stretches of the Hehuan North Peak hiking trail the soil has become compacted and worn due to repeated trampling by hikers,” Mr. Teng-Wen Chang, Deputy Superintendent, Taroko National Park Management Office, commented on the issue. “The added impact of rainwater erosion has led to the formation of numerous gullies, which has created a dire need for repairs, education and management. Handmade eco trails represent an environmentally friendly solution. We are deeply grateful to Samsung Electronics for adopting the Hehuan North Peak in a pioneering move to promote environmental sustainability through concrete action.”

Starting May 2018, Samsung Electronics Taiwan began to implement the two-year “Hehuan North Peak Trail Adoption Agreement” with the Taroko National Park Management Office. In addition to the joint promotion of environmental education activities, every two months Samsung Electronics Taiwan will send volunteers on a six-day visit to repair and maintain the hiking trails at Hehuan North Peak, clean the area around the “Little Valley” campsite, and inspect and report facility damage.

42

Volunteers Make Valuable Contributions to the Repair of Hehuan Hiking Trails Each step of the trail takes roughly one hour to repair. Suitable stone and mud are collected locally and transported to the construction site on foot. The stone has to be chiseled and combined with mud to build edged paths that will help combat water damage and soil erosion, taking into account the direction of the slope to provide appropriate drainage for the repaired trail surface. As every aspect of the repair project is intricately connected, Samsung Electronics

Taiwan’s employees underwent pretrip training and complete altitude acclimatization, making sure they were effective in their volunteer activities. “The construction of a handmade eco trail requires great physical effort,” said Wei-Hsiung Chan, culture researcher and hiking enthusiast. “Though these trails will not last forever, it is through our interactions with the mountains that we develop a respect and love for nature. We find ourselves less self-centered and humbled before Mother Nature.”

INTRODUCING THE

“Generation G” ENGINEERS

In this age driven by enormous demand for talent, meet the new generation of engineers that will patch the source gap.

he internet age is an ever-evolving era. It goes without saying that if you do not chase for innovation, you will be left behind. This unending race has also fueled a massive change in our lifestyle that altogether shaped an entirely new breed of mankind. Thus, causing chaotic disagreements between the generations that overlap.

Today, discussions over work ethics of the millennial generation and Gen Z often lead to negative criticisms without giving them a chance. Engineers of the said generation share the same prejudice from employers who do not properly 44

Today, discussions over work ethics of the millennial generation

understand its disruptive potential. But they must understand, that this generation is extensively growing and will soon inherit our lands. And even before you miss that chance to appreciate this remarkable human resource at hand, allow us to introduce the global generation of engineers or the Generation G that will adequately address the skills gap your company needs in order to stand out.

and Gen Z often lead to negative criticisms without giving them a chance.

Advantages of Engineers that are Multicultural You can’t call it innovation unless it addresses massive transformation. And you cannot create a revolution if you’re not willing to transcend cultural limitations. Gen G engineers are inherently multicultural and are very accepting and tolerant towards diversity—be it racially, ethnically, religiously and gender-based.

When traveling they aim to live like locals, looking for authentic experiences in an effort to learn from the culture and people around them. This skill is innate among them and enhances their ability to appreciate, rather than judge, other cultures.

Now, that is the perfect quality you need when you hire an engineer to work in a team. In fact, Harvard Business Review recently highlighted a project that researched performance on multicultural teams. The study resulted to a

conclusion that more creative ideas can be driven from a much diverse team than from a homogenous one. But inherent barriers like the presence of cultural norms often lead to ineffective coordination and misunderstanding when the team

is diverse in composition. But Gen G engineers are known to be multicultural brokers who possess deep experience in empathetic team participation that leads to a greater team performance—a powerful tool in fostering innovation and non-stop progression.

How to Attract Gen G Engineers? With careful thought, you should now understand the value of this new breed of engineers. The challenge, therefore is how to keep them around. As we all know, this

generation can be extremely volatile. So, unless you do something they’ll just slip away with all their ideas with them. First, you need to make an effort not to always antagonize them. Open up your heart and mind into considering the environment they have grown up. Constantly challenge them and harness their overflowing curiosity to bring forth benefits for the company. While doing so, see to it that their needs are also met.

and social entrepreneurship while aligning it with the company’s core values and principles.

Welcome to the Future We have wasted enough time deliberating which generation should be hailed the best. But this age is rapidly evolving and we need to act fast in order to survive. Don’t drive away the present generation along with their talents.

We need them now not Gen G engineers also seek out because prior generations pale in opportunities that allow them to comparison but because they are translate their passion into purpose. the future. Encourage them to do volunteering

Engineers Guide in Surviving The Hardest Job Interview Questions 48

Bring your game face on and learn to answer the most difficult job interview questions.

Y

ou’re one step towards landing on that dream job you so eagerly want— the only thing that’s keeping you from it is that interview door and the dread of responding to those hard-hitting questions. Engineers especially the more introverted ones are often denied the chance to get the job they so desire despite their very impressive resumes just because they failed miserably during the interview round. But fret not, you can nail even the toughest questions when you prepared beforehand. Dr. Thomas J. Denham, a career counselor at Careers in Transition LLC in Colonie, New York stressed out that the interview portion is indeed an elimination process to weed out those who are not worthy of the position. For an employer, it serves as the last window period to have a glimpse on the applicant’s true nature so that he won’t wind up with the wrong hire. And so, for an engineer like you struggling to finally get the job this time around, Denham offers you some advice to answer the toughest interview questions around.

1. What is your biggest weakness? Questions like these trigger a mental block. And as an engineer posing to have a sterling mind, we don’t want that.

Questions like these, trigger a mental block. And as an engineer posing to have a sterling mind, we don’t want that. According to Denham, this question is in fact thrown to rattle the applicant into admitting weaknesses that may cause him the position he wants. As brilliant escape, try responding with: “I have a tendency to say yes and get overcommitted.” This is then to be followed with an example of how you are working on prioritizing and setting personal limits. Remember not to draw negative attention to yourself through weaknesses. An

interview should always resemble a majestic display of your strengths.

2. What salary do you think you deserve? Yes, indeed. This is one of the question you’ve been itching to ask since you walk through the office door. But, Denham says, “The person who states the salary is the loser.” He followed by explaining, that if you are the first to throw out a number, the number you give could be less than what the employer was planning to pay. It’s a dangerous trap so wait for the employer to give a range, and when it does ask you for a figure you expect to be mak49

ing, choose a salary that is higher than the median they provide. To be safe, fair advice is to not talk about salary on the first interview.

3. Why should I hire you? This is the moment you’ve rehearsed a million times for. It’s time to show your cards and prove to him that you own the title and the job. But before that, review your resume and pick three to five things that you think makes you outstanding and back them with facts. Denham added, “The notion is that past performance is always the best predictor of future performance.”

4. What didn’t you like about your last job? Reserve your anger and chill out. Take a deep breathe before you impulsively step into another trap. The employer asks this question to fish for answers that would then

again hint through a weakness. So instead Denham advises you answer this way, “I did not feel my responsibilities were challenging enough.” Then the employer will feel confident about you.

5. Where do you see yourself in three to five years? I know what you’re thinking. “How on earth would I know that?” or better yet, “I’m living in the present so, let’s forget about the future for once.” These answers are definitely a fall out. It’s basically like giving the employer an idea that you do not have any sort of plans or direction in life. According to Denham, you can try a response like, “I’ve done a lot of self-assessment, and what I’ve learned about myself is that I want to make a commitment to this career and I want to build my career here.” That should be enough. Job interview or not, as an engineer you will have to face a lot

of situations in your life when you needed to speak up. You have to be as quick as you can and throw the tides on your side. Often times, practice is just the secret sauce in every triumph. However, honesty will always forge a more lasting work relationship that will make you desirable for who you truly are. At the end of the day, getting that job still requires a tiny bit of luck.
