hey were true when they said ‘time flies so fast.’ It may be hard to believe but 2018 is done and we are looking ahead for this new year, 2019. Power and Water Industries would never deny how the year 2018 has made some breakthrough and paved the way for them to work smarter through technologies.

In power industries, 2018 has set a milestone in the total transformation and evolution of renewables and also to the electricity industry. There is a notable resiliency as to the electricity production and delivery. Also, it is a very interesting year for the water industries as the number of water infrastructures altogether increased.
The utility sector is striving more than ever as the demand increases day after day and calls for greener solutions is roaring. The key to keep a steady pace in the business, power and water leaders need to assess the areas that they need to alleviate in terms of making a positively impactful change in the communities they serve while maintaining reasonable prices and creating a more sustainable system.

In the last two years, there are notable investments in renewable energy. Anywhere in the world, you can see houses with solar panels on the roof, a waterside area with wind panels and many other more that have put renewable energy in the trend. Studies have shown that in the first quarter alone of 2018, there has been over $10 billion of new investment in renewables. In addition to this, a significant number
12
of coal plants have announced their retirements. Thus, this year 2019 we will expect more of energy sources turning into renewables as they are not just environmental-friendly but will also pull the economy up considerably.
Aside from this, we will watch for more electric vehicles in the year 2019. Technology has been integrated
into the Electric Vehicle (EV) market already. Thus, experts have forecasted that more states and countries around the world will shift into vehicle electrification. Aside from the fact that yes, it may be because of the trend but also, countries are up to reduce carbon emissions and utilities in the five more years. More electric utilities, industries
aside from power and water will gear towards investment in EV.
The last but definitely the coolest thing for power, in the year 2019, it is expected for them to elevate on energy efficiency through technology. The response to energy efficiency has been
13

a challenge to the industry for many years already. It is due to the high demand of energy from traditional technologies in the form of appliances, heating and cooling equipment.
The good news is for 2019, it is expected that energy efficiency can be accomplished into something beyond our minds can control. A variety of
14
means will be integrated into the power industries such as sophisticated use of energy management, Internet-connected thermostats, and data analytics. HVAC homes will soon be operated through the Internet of Things (IoT) as there will only be a click away to control, on and off systems. Firms in their operations will be managed and monitored through data analytics.

The first is, integration of IoT solutions this 2019 is set to be done. This is to address age-old infrastructure issues of water and the industries incorporated on them. A lot of research is now ongoing so they can set and reshape business strategies for companies in the water industry.
Furthermore, in industrial companies, studies have shown that this 2019, there will be more companies that will invest in recycled wastewater. In addition, eight percent of reuse projects are in four key states yet it is also expected that there will be more states to invest
in programs involving water reuse. This is also the reason why industrial applications for water reuse is expected to grow at 72 percent. The good thing is by 2027, it is projected that potable applications will account for 19 percent of total reuse.
The Internet of Things (IoT) as ever, will provide in-depth information on manufacturing processes and operations which could balance production costs.

In this case, it will definitely be a winwin situation for consumers. Water reuse will assure that water consumption in a way will also pave way for global water conservation. That said, it is expected that this 2019, water for agriculture will become more advanced through smarter irrigation solutions. It was never a secret how water plays an

important role in agricultural sectors. However, this time, 360 degrees transformation towards better and smarter irrigation is somewhat expected this year 2019.
These are just some of the many more innovations, technological advancement, and solutions to watch out for in the power and water industry. Indeed, it will be an exciting year as these things will make the said industries revolutionary—marking another breakthrough movement in the books of future history.
But aside from that, the best part is that, the moment these forecasts materialize, they will greatly benefit not only us but many other industries that depend on the aforementioned sectors to ultimately make us globally sustainable.

A new cooperation on water: PUB and Grundfos A new cooperation on water: PUB and Grundfos
With the new cooperation agreement with Singapore’s National Water Agency, PUB, we want to explore, develop and implement new, innovative and sustainable technologies within the fields of water supply and water treatment.
W
For the coming three years we will be joining forces with PUB in Singapore to bring innovative water technologies alive. This is possible, as our company in the city-state, which is considered to be one of the world’s leading water hubs, has signed a new cooperation agreement with the Agency. The aim is to develop new solutions as regards water treatment, water quality monitoring and new digital solutions, as well as to ensure even better use of efficient pump technologies.
42
“The need for water in Singapore is rising and expected to double by 2060. To meet the need in the best possible way, it is central to Singapore to continue investing in research and development to ensure a sustainable water supply for generations to come. Therefore, we are also very excited to continue and expand our cooperation with Grundfos,” says Harry Seah, PUB’s Assistant Chief Executive for Future Systems and Technology. Building on a solid foundation The cooperation between PUB and Grundfos, which took off in 2014, is both about developing new water technologies, but also about using the existing opportunities optimally, for instance by implementing water and energy efficient pump solutions in Singapore’s water infrastructure.
These are favourable conditions to the development work, but also to the commercial: “The partnership does not only support Singapore’s efforts of ensuring a sustainable water supply, it will also inspire other countries and cities in their work. This fits well with our ambitions of being a global role model in terms of both water and climate,” says Kim Jensen, Reginal Managing Director, APREG, Grundfos. Already by now, water treatment projects that use filter cake filtration and intelligent monitoring of bacteria levels in drinking water have been initiated in Singapore. The agreement was signed in July by Harry Seah and Kim Jensen.

DEWA promotes concept of ‘Inclusive Employment’ amongst 2nd level leaders ubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) Advisory Council for People of Determination organised a session about inclusion and empowerment of the people of determination. It was attended by a number of managers and second level leaders from DEWA’s divisions and departments. This comes as part of the ‘Inclusive Leadership’ initiative, which includes a series of training sessions for leaders in various divisions, on the concept of ‘inclusive organisations’, highlighting DEWA’s efforts to include disability within its policies, procedures, programmes, projects, and budget cycles. It also comes within the legislative frameworks to protect the rights of people of determination in the workplace according to the ‘Integration and Empowerment Guide’ developed by DEWA as per best international practices based on local laws in Dubai and the UAE, as well as the global standards related to the integration of people of determination in the workplace and society.
D
“DEWA stresses the importance of integrating people of determination and their happiness in a stimulating environment that helps them display their energy and capabilities. This comes in line with the the National Policy to Empower People of Determination, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. This policy aims to create a barrier-free society that ensures empowerment
44
and a decent life for people of determination. DEWA supports the ‘My Community…A Place for Everyone’ initiative launched by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, to fully transform Dubai into a friendly city for people of determination by 2020. DEWA is committed to achieving the UAE National Agenda goals for inclusive employment, to develop the capabilities of people of determination and provide them with professional and operational skills that support their economic and social independence. We are keen to include the rights of people of determination in all our policies and procedures in accordance with best practices and global standards. DEWA has gone a long way in building the capacity of its employees in the service of employees and customers of determination,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“Inclusive employment is an integrated system of legislative and regulatory measures, programmes and services. They guarantee an open and non-discriminatory working environ-
ment for all capacities, and promote more choices for people of determination in selecting their opportunities. Those of them with a desire to work will receive the appropriate support and empowerment to start working and develop themselves,” said Dr. Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA, and Chairman of DEWA’s Advisory Council for People of Determination.
DEWA, in cooperation with the Ministry of Community Development, organised a workshop for the human resources staff last month to train them on the principles of inclusive employment using the guidance issued by the Ministry to build government capacity in the recruitment and retention of people of determination. This includes conducting job interviews, dealing with them at the workplace, and discussing the job seekers guide for people of determination. Common Resume and CV Mistakes By Engineers 46
Ever wondered why you always don’t get the job?—these detrimental mistakes engineers commit might be the reason why.
he engineering world is a vast ocean, there are a lot of fishes swimming and it’s up to you whether or not you’ll choose to be beaten. In this age, where innovation and engineering solutions grow rampant, companies are on the lookout for the best hire to edge out rivals.
T
This only means that even though the demand is high, the competition also leveled-up. What’s left to do now, is to take the first strike and figure out what it takes to be hired. When it comes to job hunting, your number one weapon is a well-crafted resume. You have to tailor your resume both for a computer and for a person because many businesses have several filters. If your resume falls short of the minimum job requirements, your phone isn’t going to ring, no matter what. Here are some of the most common resume-mistakes engineers make and ways to prevent or fix them:
47
L E A D E R S H I P
S T O R I E S
1. NO SINGLE RESUME IS GOOD ENOUGH It’s pretty much obvious that you won’t be applying for a single company, right? There are a lot of engineering firms around and the more you apply equals the more chances of you getting hired. But perhaps the most common and most harmful mistake engineers make, is thinking that one resume will suffice. The truth is that you have to update your resume for every position you’re applying for.
2. TOO LONG, LESS ENTICING Long resumes will take too long to review. Remember that recruiters got a lot of applicants, so sending in
48
a long one has a tendency to consume more of time. Customize your resume. Fit the most relevant experience onto that first page, making it easy for prospective employers to find your best qualifications. It also proves that you know how to prioritize what is important, a highly desirable trait in any employee.
3. GLARING MISTAKES ARE SORE TO THE EYES Resume writing is an art. And the more mistakes it has, can cause it to become unappealing to the eyes. Formatting, grammatical, or spelling error, tells all the wrong things about a candidate. Thus, it is always worth it to pay someone to edit your resume to make sure it is clean and presentable.
4. VA G U E F A C T S ARE NOT SMART When engineering firms post a job vacancy, they provide specifics. They are looking for that perfect hire who at least have the same level of attention to detail as their future employees. In this case, you should make it a habit to give them what they want. For instance, if you’re applying as a computer engineer include the kind of apps you know how to program.
5. HIGHLIGHTING THINGS THAT ARE NOT IMPORTANT As engineers, you should be output-driven. Forget about the boring elaboration of your previous duties
and come straight to the point. Focus on what matters like how efficient you can be. If you work on an assembly, highlight how much you can process in an hour and the percentage of your work that was accepted.
7. ADDING GRAPHICS WHEN NOT APPLYING AS AN ARTIST
6. WHY USE WEIRD AND UNPROFESSIONAL EMAIL ADDRESS
Although, this can get the attention of employers, graphics just takes up space. Even if you work with graphics for a living, you should provide a link to a portfolio instead than cramming everything onto your resume. Engineering resume needs to highlight experience, not a headshot or image of you.
If you think you can get away with small details, well you’re just as wrong. Email addresses are important as it tells how seriously you want to take on the position. Professional engineers don’t use personal and offensive email address as much as their former employer’s email address. Try out a simple one with your name on it from gmail.com.
8. NO LINKS NO PORTFOLIOS
9. UNFOCUSED, UNSTRUCTURED RESUME Staying organized is a feat that makes it to the cut. Sections inside your resume need to be clearly defined, previous positions should be easy to view (especially the duration of work for different divisions or companies), and bullets should be consistent. Remember, hiring managers average about 6 seconds on a resume during the initial perusal, so they need to be able to find all of the basics so that your resume ends up in the pile for further review instead of in the discard
If you are a computer engineer or an ECE with a proud experience in software design and web development, one fatal mistake is not including a link to your portfolio. What could have been a perfect opportunity to show more than the contents of the resume would be wasted away if you dare forget this.

pile.
10. IGNORANCE WITH KEYWORDS If you really want to prove that you are truly interested with the job, then you shouldn’t miss the job description part. It includes key words in it that are pleasing to any employer’s eyes. Also, include as well the keywords of your profession. Use those engineering buzz words to show that you know how to use them and that you possess in-depth knowledge of your profession.
11. INCLUDING FLUFF AND WEASEL WORDS ON YOUR RESUME Remove all the excess and uncertainties. Words like very, nearly, and approximately really don’t have a place in your resume. You need to keep it as clear and concise as possible. If a word is not required or does not offer a deeper description of what you did or achieved, delete it.
12. OBJECTIVE NOT FOUND There are two ways to mishandle the objective section of your resume. The first is to leave it out entirely. This can be an extremely easy way for potential employers to eliminate your resume within the first second of checking it. The second way to mishandle it is to be vague.
13. MISSING VERBS Verbs are the heart of your resume. It keeps the content flowing. Lack of action verbs is a really easy item to fix, but a mistake that far too many job hunters make. The best way to fix this is to change all of your bullets to start with an action verb.

14. OMITTING THINGS THAT A R E R E L E VA N T Have you ever done any volunteer work? Put all of this on your resume if you can tie it back to why it makes you a valuable employee. There should be a section on your resume that covers your extra-curricular activities and hobbies. Everyone has hobbies, and odds are those hobbies require a level of expertise, organization, and planning that can be applied to the job.
15. T O O PA I N F U L T O LOOK AT Style is as important as the content of your resume. Using different font types (or just a really bad font), more than two font sizes, or too much information crammed into too little space are indeed sore to the eyes.
16. BADLY SORTED EXPERIENCE Bring more logic to the way you present yourself. What you highlight in your resume should flow in a way that makes sense, such as including meeting related activities together, programming items together, defectmonitoring tasks together, customerdriven tasks together, and so on. Each point should flow into the next one.
17. PRESENTING I R R E L E VA N T JOBS If you’re an engineer would it benefit you to include positions not even related to the job you’re applying to? Cull things that don’t pertain to the position to which you are applying and delete jobs that you did more than 15 years ago. You can also provide the type of degree you have without including the year.
18. TOO LAZY TO CUSTOMIZE Once again, resumes represent your profile in every job application. Exert more time and don’t rush it just to get done. Also, customize your resume to show a bit of who you are so that it stands out.
19. U N E QUA L TREATMENT E QUA LS DIFFERENT PRESENCE Ideally, your resume should be nearly identical to your online professional presence, whether on LinkedIn or your own website. Your resume could be a shortened version, but it should be consistent with the experience you present on job boards and on your site.
20. WRITING YOUR RESUME IN THE WRONG POV Of all the times you are prohibited to use the first person, this one counts as an exception. Your resume is one of those places where the first person is necessary. However, since it is evidently about you, you may safely eliminate pronouns entirely. Engineering resumes require careful attention to details in order to become an attractive and compelling presentation of yourself. Make it as concise as possible and maintain the look of a professional.
