Before the birth of women role models who stepped up to make a name in their respective industries, women were inferior to men. These days, many women are raising the flags of feminism, showing the world that they can do better or at least could also do what men can.

Women Scarcity in Renewables However, despite the number of females who became successful in various fields in science, technology, and engineering, the involvement of women in the renewable industry remains scarce. Because of this, the lack of diversity in the sector is apparent as men continue to populate companies- failing to see what they are amiss. Since the renewable industry is new, leaders could easily overlook the benefits women can bring to their company.

Female Leaders Can Be Better Men are experts in terms of knowledge and technical skills, but women are actually great in these fields too. In fact, they can even be better. Having women in the business will not only allow them to showcase their skills, 4

nature is more profound, they will be more effective in pushing new regulations and innovations in the sector.

Diversity will break the homogeneous thinking of a group helping to come up with better decisions and innovations. As years pass, more and more people recognize the value of solar panels, wind energy, and others.

Hopefully, with more women role models, the leaders of the renewable industry will finally open their eyes and recognize the value of the female population.

Hiring women in the renewable industry can fill the skills gap, knowing that this is currently in demand as more people advocate to help the environment.

The renewable energy sector has failed to acknowledge the advantages that women can bring to the industry. Because of that, there is a lack of diversity in renewable energy companies. Women still belong to the minority groups and their voices are seldom heard as men continue

to dominate over them. The International Renewable Energy Agency reports that the global renewable energy employment (excluding large-scale hydropower) has reached 8.3 million in 2016. But despite this increase, women repre9

sentation is still small. In countries under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), only 20 percent of the employees are females who work in sales and administration, engineering, and technical departments. The poor gender diversity in the industry results in a slow transition and it hinders new ideas that women could contribute. Compared to other industries, the energy sector is lagging in terms of

diversity which affects the way the business runs. Because of this, groups like Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) are looking for ways to advance the role and recognition of women in the sector. This will help improve the industry as females navigate change with new technologies, innovations, and ideas.

Does Diversity Really Matter? The first step that companies need to take is to assess how they can truly benefit from women employees. Once more females are added to the team, it can create a more diverse workplace. Apart from women, minority ethnic groups including Asians and black people should be given roles contributing to the sector’s diversity. Is this really necessary? 12

Working with a group comprised of like-minded individuals will result into homogenous thinking. This means that there will be a limited perspective which hinders the creation of fresh ideas. Hence, in order for a group to be effective, there should be brainstorming with different points of view from people with different experiences and backgrounds based on their gender, age, and culture. Having a good balance between the number of male

and female workers will help create a bigger picture when dealing with issues and other business-related matters. For instance, males and females has varying approach to risks. Females are more careful and cautious. With this, their inputs about how to manage health and safety in construction sites would be beneficial. Surrounding the industry with different people or with a diverse group will welcome more ideas and perspectives, making industry leaders more cognizant and receptive to other viewpoints.

Why We Need More Women in the Energy Sector The renewable energy sector is still relatively new which explains why there is a current lack of diversity. This also mean that it could open its doors to more female engineers since it still needs more time to fully develop. Currently, there is an increasing global demand for energy but it is struggling due to skills shortages. However, this dilemma can be resolved if more women could be part of the business. Women can close the skills gap which will help companies keep pace with the demands of the world. The skills of females are different from men as they have a slight edge when it comes to project management, negotiation, and diplomacy. They also have the knowledge that men possess from technical know-hows like installing solar panels to subject theories like how a wind turbine works. But the greatest advantage of hiring women is their sympathetic nature towards the state of the environment and climate change. This means that they can incorporate new ideas and innovations that can help the industry tackle climate change. Since females are more concerned of this aspect, their strong pro-climate beliefs and opinions can be prominent voices to call for greater action. 15

The change can start in STEM education in students. Ambassadors and role models can also encourage students to work on this field. Role models can also help increase female visibility in the industry. This way, it would be easier to gain trust not just from the society but from the male leaders. Gender diversity in companies can produce better innovation. It is also easier to tackle the best approaches in policy based on a variety of 18

perspectives. Since women lend a unique perspective on effective solutions for sustainability, the birth of new ideas and programs in the sector can lead to its progress. Now that we realize the value of diversity and the availability of a range of skills, it is time to make a change. The renewable energy industry needs to open more opportunities for women. -end-

Acceleration of Public-Private Collaboration is Needed to Close the Protection Gap Emerging Asian Countries Most Vulnerable to the Impact of Natural Catastrophes

According to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), between 2000 and 2018 more than four in five people (84%) affected by natural hazards were living in developing Asia; the region accounted for 55% of the global disaster death toll, and for 26% of global damages. In the period from 1970 to 2019 the region lost USD1.5 trillion due to natural disasters, while the estimated costs of damage from these catastrophes as a percentage of GDP is increasing. Denis Duverne, IDF Chairman 26

and Chairman of the Board of AXA, stated: “The insurance industry and the public sector need to accelerate their collaboration into action. We need to drive concrete significant measures to extend the use of insurance and related risk reduction capabilities to help build greater resilience to climate risk and natural catastrophes in countries where it is needed most.” The protection gap, or the difference between total losses and insured losses, is highest

in Emerging Asian countries regarding natural catastrophes. The share of uninsured property catastrophe losses caused by storms, floods and earthquakes is above 90 per cent in these countries. Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) commented at the gathering: “The consequence of unmanaged risk is clear. In 2018, there was USD 160 billion of loss from natural hazard, USD 80 billion of which was not insured. The impact of this loss on lives and livelihoods is immense, especially in the most vulnerable countries and communities. “The insurance industry has a critical role to play in helping to close this ‘protection gap’ and UNDP looks forward to working with them on innovative partnerships to achieve this, especially through global partnerships such as the Insurance Development Forum and InsuResilience Global Partnership, to which we remain firmly committed.” One of the key focuses of the IDF day was a new report released by IDF member ICMIF, in partnership with many IDF partners, which examined in detail the role of inclusive insurance in the wake of Haiyan. Here, the evidence points strongly to faster recovery from disaster by those families that have insurance.


The IDF Day also focused on infrastructure and the importance of proactive risk management in this area. Infrastructure needs in developing Asia and the Pacific are reported to represent USD 1.7 trillion per year to 2030 in order to maintain the region’s growth momentum while also addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation. Denis Duverne commented: “The insurance industry has vast technical expertise on how to increase climate resilience for infrastructure assets, and risk transfer mechanisms are a critical source of funding for repairing or reconstructing infrastructure when it is damaged or destroyed by a natural disaster. To protect economic gains, enabling greater access to these capabilities should be at the forefront of the policy agenda for the region.� The IDF will be releasing a guide to insuring public assets later this year aimed at providing practical recommendations to governments and other public entities seeking to protect their assets and gain access to the knowledge and technical competence the re/insurance industry can provide.

Clearway Energy Group signs over 1,400 MW in wind turbine agreements in the past nine months Clearway Energy Group (“Clearway”) has signed agreements for Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (“Siemens Gamesa”) to supply Clearway over 1,400 MW. Siemens Gamesa is providing varying wind turbine types to both build new projects and to repower existing projects in Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia. This week Clearway also announced the financial close of repowering both the Wildorado and Elbow Creek Wind Farms in Texas with Siemens Gamesa, which total 283 MW. Wildorado and Elbow Creek were both signed in September 2018. “We are excited to continue our partnership with Clearway on these projects, which are a testament to a solid collaboration between both companies in the last year,” said José Antonio Miranda, CEO of Onshore Americas at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. “The repowering of the Wildorado and Elbow Creek projects is a major step in an exciting relationship with Clearway and a demonstration of confidence in Siemens Gamesa.” “We’re proud to be moving forward with our Repowering 30

Partnership with Clearway Energy, Inc. and concurrently signing agreements for over 1.4 GW of new construction and repowering wind projects with Siemens Gamesa,” said Craig Cornelius, CEO of Clearway Energy Group. “In addition to getting started on these first repowering projects, we’re looking forward to advancing the balance of the projects planned under these agreements and seeing them through to completion over the coming years.”

Additional projects being developed by Clearway Energy Group included in the turbine arrangements feature the previously sold Mesquite Star project, currently under construction in Texas, and the proposed Rattlesnake Flat project in Washington, along with projects yet to be announced.

FEWA and Mubadala - ACWA Power consortium ink Agreements for Desalination Plant in Umm Al Quwain Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed AI Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and in fulfillment of the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 - His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Umm Al Quwain, harnessed the full potential of the emirate to implement the project in support of the water security strategy, which will accelerate the sustainable development of the UAE.

The Federal Electricity & Water Authority (FEWA) and a consortium consisting of ACWA Power, a global leader in water desalination and power generation, and MDC Power Holding Company LLC, an entity fully owned by Mubadala Investment Company PJSC (Mubadala), has entered into a water purchase agreement for a 150 million imperial gallon per day desalination plant in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain. The plant will utilise Seawater Reverse Osmosis technology.

His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saud Al Mualla, Crown Prince of the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, stated: “The crucial and strategic project in Umm Al Quwain is considered an important milestone in the series of development projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as it enhances the partnership between the public and private sectors and reflects positivity on the overall national economy; the project is also strategically located between Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah”.

Under the terms of the agreement FEWA will hold 20 percent of the stake, while ACWA Power and Mubadala will each own 40 percent. The

project is FEWA’s first asset in partnership with the private sector. Its implementation will reinforce UAE’s Water Security Strategy 2036 as well as bolster its core programmes. The plant is set to supply 150 million imperial gallons per day to the Northern Emirates and will prompt the private sector to further invest in those areas.” Once commissioned, the Umm Al Quwain plant will be the largest desalination project in the Northern Emirates. The project cost is deemed as highly competitive and will utilize state of the art technology allowing it to efficiently produce water while preserving the environment. Construction is expected to commence in the second half of 2019, with initial water production scheduled in 2021.

The project is part of the UAE’s effort to optimise water production and meet the increasing demand for water in the country. Mohammad Mohammad Saleh, Director General of FEWA said: “This project will be FEWA’s first IWP project to be held in the Northern Emirates, which will help in utilizing an efficient water generation system to meet and secure the demands of both residential and agriculture sectors with competitive economical prices. FEWA will continue to achieve its ambitious vision of meeting the growing water demands in the Northern Emirates by improving and investing in its water facilities infrastructure and seeking to adapt new technologies to enhance sustainable developments.” “Our agreement with FEWA is a strong indicator of how ACWA Power has developed a stronghold in the United Arab Emirates. Setting up the first IPP infrastructure in Umm Al Quwain, while simultaneously expanding our portfolio of projects is a major milestone for us. Advanced Stadium Cooling: Innovative Technology Coming to the Qatar World Cup Every stadium has it’s own unique form and structure

The 2018 World Cup marked the World Cup debut of using the Video Assistant Referee, also known as VAR, as the newest technological innovation coming to the stadiums. According to FIFA, the VAR system had a success rate of 99.3 percent and many football analysts have praised the introduction of VAR. In their opinion, the World Cup was a perfect example of how technology can work well for football, although it did show that there are some risks involved in relying on the technology. In 2022, when the World Cup will be played in Qatar, a newer and bigger technical innovation will come to the stadiums. All host stadiums will be air-conditioned, making it doable to organize the World Cup in a country with extreme heats. Since Qatar was announced as the competition’s host in December 2010, many have been critical of the controversial choice wondering how an event like the World Cup could be organized in the desert. 36

In only one generation, Qatar has transformed from a handful of poor fishing villages into the richest country per capita in the world. It turns out if you combine gas revenues with foreign labor and the firm hand of the ruling monarchy, a country can be transformed rather quickly. Now, Qatar is taking on one of the biggest sports events the world has to offer. Because of the extreme heat, revolutionary cooling technology is going to be used at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after tests proved everything is working as it should at the proposed World Cup stadiums. The development is an important step in the build-up to the tournament, which has courted controversy since Qatar was announced as the competition’s host. The 2022 tournament is therefore being held in winter for the first time, to avoid the searing summer heat. With temperatures averaging 42



degrees Celsius in summer, the decision was made to move the dates of the World Cup to winter, when temperatures around 30 degrees are to be expected. This is the reason why the stadiums will have air-conditioning installed, in order to bring down the temperature to about 20 degrees on the pitch and 23 degrees in the stands. The innovation being trialed in Qatar involves a system where cold air is being pumped into stadiums through a system powered by chilled water, which is the transformed into a cold mist after passing through cooling nozzles. They way it works is that the platform of the stadium is used to defend it against the infiltration of warm wind. This means the stadium is a barrier that is basically containing a cold bubble inside. The technology works by maintaining the cold bubble for as long as necessary in order for people to watch the game, and so the players are comfortable enough to play their game. The Al Wakrah Stadium also has a roof that can be opened and a seating-bowl cooling system to allow football to be played all-year round. At Al Wakrah Stadium, they are using an air circulation 38

technique, which means some of the air is drawn back, cooled again and then pushed back to the supporters and players. The cooling technology for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 has been a crucial part since the country announced its bid for the tournament in 2009. Every stadium has it’s own unique form and structure. For example, the Khalifa International Stadium is a big stadium with an athletics track which makes it so an unconventional treatment is needed. At Khalifa, fresh air is taken and pushed to the people. Moreover, a new line of under-seat diffusers has been developed in order to deliver the air to fans in a gentle manner. No doubt, Qatar wants to show itself to the world, building the most advanced stadiums that ever have been built. The stadiums are also built so close to each other, fans could actually attend more than one game per day. The longest distance between two venues is just 55km, a short journey that will be seamless thanks to an advanced underground railway system.
