T

he COVID-19 outbreak has taken a toll on many countries across the globe, impacting a wide array of industries, including the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. Because of the pandemic, numerous tech giants have paused their ongoing marketing operations, cancelled huge events and conferences, and produced financial results lower than market expectations.

20

21

C O V E R

S T O R Y

And as expected, growth in global IT spending will decline by at least three to four per cent by the end of year according to consumer technology market analyst, International Data Corporation (IDC). The major impact of the pandemic is anticipated to be on hardware businesses, but the software and service businesses will also likely be affected as the spread of the disease goes across many countries. Although most businesses are struggling with current losses, the ICT industry will likely be one of the handful of sectors still standing in the long run and emerge stronger than before. But it is worth noting that it will not be smooth sailing for all the businesses in the ICT market as they still have to tackle the strain on infrastructure networks, supply chain disruptions, contractions in consumer spending, reduced component availability, and the general financial effect of the pandemic in the short term. That said, before we see the rebound of the ICT industry once the pandemic slowed, we might encounter a few severe short-term implications, including retrenchment and reduced investments in modernization. 22

However, thanks to the increased adoption of cloud services and collaborative applications and the usage of less impacted technologies like security, big data, AI, and IoT, there has been a more positive impact on the ICT sector.

Impact of COVID-19 on Different ICT Areas The world has become interconnected now more than ever because of the ongoing health crisis. Although the ICT industry is already losing many income opportunities and the times are still uncertain, many technological fields are gaining key focus and starting to emerge as clear winners. For instance, Over the Top (OTT) content players and digital media are benefiting from the work-from-home arrangements of many organizations. Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), data security, and cybersecurity have also seen a surge in usage thanks to the exponential ride in collaboration apps and platforms. Along with this, cloud services will grow due to higher usage of content, video conferencing, gaming downloads, and remote access to corporate networks.

We will also see modern technologies like big data, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality in the spotlight.

28

29

Going forward, we will also see modern technologies like big data, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality in the spotlight. And while the pandemic has not triggered Industry 5.0, it has highlighted Industry 4.0 more with digital workflows, automation, and robots becoming a requirement instead of a goal. IoT has also offered business organizations revenue streams during the pandemic. Other areas that we will likely see at the forefront include e-learning, e-governance, and online education. The e-commerce sector is also starting to become a trend now as shoppers begin to avoid crowded shopping areas and digital payments are taking over physical payments. With the current circumstances, the adoption of 5G may also accelerate in order to meet the growing demands in performance, network slicing, and bandwidth, especially nowadays when telecommunication has been elevated into an essential service. Meanwhile, cable operators will be impacted more due to the increased home activity, including greater streaming service demand and working from home.

32

The Role of AI and Analytics in the ICT Businesses’ ‘New Normal’ During this health crisis, it is important for companies to reinvent themselves by placing AI and data at the core of their organizations. They can easily leverage Analytics and AI on two primary fronts: driven by the organization’s internal needs as new opportunities, challenges, and use cases arise and driven by the systematic shift in consumer behavior in the “new normal.” Key areas driven by internal needs, where AI and analytics will most likely play a crucial role, include revenue and business continuity planning, network and operational analytics, collaboration services leveraging AI, digitization and automation, and augmented data management and integration. On the other hand, key areas driven by consumer behavior shift, where AI and analytics will lend a hand, include new consumption patterns, customer experience optimization, and last mile fulfillment. Surely, AI and analytics will be the enablers for ICT businesses to thrive and emerge victorious despite the ongoing pandemic. - End -

As we close in on the year 2020, many individuals in the technology industry are conducting research and nigh endlessly studying about how they can improve their efficiency, work ethic, output, and overall morale. That having been said, here are their findings and gradually growing trends that are prospected to be realized next year. There are 8 trends that those in the technology industry have discovered:

36

37

COVER STORY

1. Hyperautomation: machines that use

technology to automate various jobs that once have required humans. Hyperautomation revolves around the application of cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), to progressively and swiftly automate processes and enhance human skill. This extends across a range of tools that can be pre-set, but may also refer to the sophistication of the automation in that they have the capability to discover, analyse, design, automate, measure, monitor, and reassess, among many other things. More often than not, hyperautomation results in the creation of a digitalized version of the organization. Since no single tool can replace the initiative and unique thought-processes of human beings, hyperautomation today involves a combination of tools, including robotic process automation (RPA), intelligent business management software (iBPMS) and AI, with a goal of increasingly AI-driven decision making. Despite not being the main goal, the creation of a digital twin of the organization (DTO), allowing organizations to visualize how functions, processes and key performance indicators interact to drive value, is a common result in hyperautomation. This then becomes a key component of the process, providing real-time, unceasing information about the organization and impelling business opportunities.

38

2. Multiexperience Multiexperience may replace technology-literate people with people-literate technology and the traditional idea of a computer evolves from a single point of interaction to include multisensory and multitouchpoint interfaces like wearables and advanced computer sensors. For example, Domino’s Pizza created an experience beyond app-based ordering that includes autonomous vehicles, a pizza tracker and smart speaker communications. In the near future, this will become what one may call an ambient experience. Currently, multiexperience revolves around immersive experiences that utilize augmented reality (AR), virtual (VR), mixed reality, multichannel human-machine interfaces, and sensory technologies. 42

3. Democratization Democratization of technology signifies offering people with easy access to practical business know-how without extensive and costly training. It revolves around 4 key pillars— application development, data and analytics, design and knowledge. This is often insinuated to as “citizen access, which has led to the rise of citizen data scientists, citizen programmers, and the like.

43

44

4. Human augmentation Human augmentation is the use of technology to enhance a person’s cognitive and physical experiences. Not unlike cyborgs of various works of fiction, the individuals find themselves enhanced by technology to normalize an anomaly in the body or correct an injury brought about by an unfortunate incident. Physical augmentation modifies an intrinsic physical capability or corrects a physical incapability by implanting a device within or on the body. For example, the automotive or mining industries use wearables to improve worker safety. In other industries, such as retail and travel, wearables are used to increase worker productivity. In the medical technology industry, technology for disabilities are becoming more streamlined with non-stop upgrades every year.

5. Transparency and traceability While technology was firstly created by man to connect the world, it has now created a culture of mistrust and privacy breaching. As consumers gain more knowledge about how their data is being collected and utilized by big companies and the government, organizations are also recognizing the increasing accountability of storing and gathering the data. In addition, artificial intelligence and machine learning are incessantly used to make decisions in lieu of humans, swelling the trust crisis and driving the requirement for the governance of artificial intelligence. This trend requires a focus on six key elements of trust: ethics, integrity, openness, accountability, competence, and consistency.

6. The empowered edge Edge computing is a topology where information processing and content collection and delivery are near the sources of the information, with the idea that keeping information traffic local and distributed will reduce inactivity. This is comprised of all the technology on the Internet of Things (IoT). The empowered edge looks at how these devices are snowballing and laying the groundwork for smart spaces.

7. The distributed cloud Distributed cloud refers to the distribution of public cloud services to locations outside the cloud provider’s physical data centers, but which are still controlled by the provider. In distributed cloud, the cloud provider is responsible for all aspects of cloud service architecture, delivery, operations, governance and updates. The evolution from centralized public cloud to distributed public cloud ushers in a new era of cloud computing. Distributed cloud allows data centers to be located anywhere. This solves both technical issues like latency and also regulatory challenges like data sovereignty. It also offers the benefits of a public cloud service alongside the benefits of a private, local cloud. 48

8. AI security Advancing technologies such as hyperautomation and autonomous items offer transcendent prospects in the world in regards to business. However, they also create security susceptibilities in new potential points of attack. Security teams must address these challenges and be aware of how AI will impact the security space, lest the Terminator franchise becomes a thing of reality. The line between technology infringing upon the responsibilities of man and helping us do our daily tasks is blurry indeed, but without technology we would not have gotten to where we are now. That having been said, as technology continues to grow and become more advanced, the minds behind them must be calculated and clear in imposing restrictions around these machines. Thankfully, no machine, no matter how advanced, can every truly emulate the workings of the human mind. -end49

The notion of medicine has always been regarded as the pinnacle of the pharmaceutical or biotechnological industry— a microscopic molecule that enters the body and combats illness and diseases. However, a new contender is set to arrive to the health industry and it comes from an unlikely source at that. This new player is being quietly developed and will revolutionize the procedures of the entire medical community, how they interact with patients, and how diseases are eradicated.

When one thinks of robotics and automation, one would think of giant, metallic machines doing menial tasks such as product creation in various factories, or worse yet, automatons from science fiction bent on ruling the world and their creators. This new contender in the health industry is unlike those two, not in size and purpose. The most fascinating and sensational innovation in health care that aims to radically alter how medical professionals interact with patients is medical robotics. Clinical visits of tomorrow will include more lines of software code and technology hardware with the advent

of autonomous vehicles and health robotics. Robotics in health care today are largely procedural based efforts. Intuitive Surgical’s Da Vinci robot is arguably the most advanced surgical robot on the market due to its ability to manipulate radiofluorescence. This machine aids surgeons to spot the difference between blood vessels and urine carrying structures so as to decrease the probability of medical errors. However, despite the ingenuity and complexity of these robots, these machines are still machines and are thus still operated by human

hands and minds. A proficient medical technician is still necessary for the handling of these robots because human connection is still very much important. The key therefore will be in the way the robotic clinician achieves the human connection with the patient. These robotic clinicians and their automatons should be able to deliver high quality care based on real time analytics that compare and contrast your health concern and issue to a vast database of patient-reported outcomes and objective measures accumulated by a network of robotic providers. For example, a young child who might be far more engaged i.e. distracted by a robot whose face is instantly transformed into the child’s favorite animated character. This will distract the young child from the complexity of medical procedures and thus lessen potential fear. Achieving strong interpersonal relationships between medical professional and patients to improve daily choices and practice healthy behaviors are some of the synergistic outcomes that might result from allowing our robotic clinicians to focus efforts where it matters most, such as grocery shopping tours with patients, home visits with your primary care clinician to understand a patient’s living environment, and physical activity involving the guidance of a care team. All in all, our health care system should be, and in many ways is, about doing what is best for the patient in this rapidly evolving health care landscape. With the evolution of health technology, there is certainly a possibility of a widening gap between the medical professional and patient which may cause further miscommunication, panic, or even an increased number of medical incidents. As we look to the future and work together to achieve improved medical professional-patient relations, there exists a bind between the two types of people in the form of medical robotics. It will be important therefore to incorporate leading technologies such as robotic clinicians into our daily efforts. Thankfully, we live in the future and are able to recognize that these times hold great promise for breaking barriers and pushing the limits of what may be possible in health care! -end-

Lighting to manufacturing plants and local government units in the Philippines. Continuing to the year 2019, NuPON Technology has definitely continued to form partnerships and develop innovative solutions like the 1000 KVA UPS System, Intelligence Fluid Mixing System, and Intelligence Chemical Distribution System, to support local clients and partners. It may come as no surprise, but NuPON Technology has embedded its name and character in the space of all things technological and industrial. With a wide array of products such as abrasives, automated guided vehicles, cleaning equipment, products that help in the scope of engineering, cleaning, lifting, packaging, and industrial among others, NuPON is sowing the seeds of technological growth wherever it becomes present. As technical sales manager Reinhard “Reggie” Chan expounds, they are “planning to branch out to Davao and Zamboanga” in order to spread the businesses and help the Mindanaoans in any way they can. One of their prized products are their automated guided vehicle (AGV) series. These AGVs are portable robots that either follow marked lines on the floor, uses radio waves, vision cameras, magnets, or lasers for navigation. Most often used in industrial applications to transport heavy loads and other materials around a large industrial facility such as 76

factories or warehouses, automated guided vehicles have lessened overall difficulty by carrying heavier materials as well as increasing the limit of materials that can be carried. With 2D Code and IMU navigation capabilities, their Quicktron can carry up to 600kg. On the heavier side of things, the laser-guided Pallet Truck AGV, for instance, can carry 1000 to 2000 kg and move up to 45M/min for 8 hours. NuPON Technology also ensures safety for the workforce in all industries with their many personal protective equipment (PPE). Their Sun Shade Brim Helmet can provide relief on hot summer days and full head-protection; with a high-definition protective filter to ensure clarity without compromising security, their NOVA-616G Auto Darkening Helmet is suitable for all types of electro-welding, covered electrodes, plasma cutting, and laser welding; and a rack of industrial safety shoes that act as exceptional defences for your legs and feet in the form of industrial safety shoes and boots that, in terms of stylishness, can give even the world’s most popular shoe brands a run for their money. However, due to the complexity and expensiveness of this technology, some countries are not adapting to this innovation yet. But countries like South Korea, the United States, and the United Kingdom, are already in their full run to cover their respective territories with 5G technology. Based on a press release, the U.S. and the U.K. are expecting to provide 5G mobile service on the majority of their respective territories in 2020. One with the hope to equip the world with 5G-enabled devices, tech giants Samsung and Motorola are also doing their parts. In fact, last year, these companies launched their mainstream 5G-enabled devices. According to representatives of Samsung, their 5G mobile phones provide up to 20 Gigabits per second data transfer rate. This is equivalent to 20 times the speed of the recent 4G technology. Tech experts pointed out that the extraordinary speed of 5G network is just a start. They expect major enhancements and upgrades in the coming years. Some reports even confirmed that there will be major adjustments in the layout of 5G-enabled mobile phones. The mobile phones in the future are deemed to 114

be bigger and will be designed mainly to cater to augmented reality applications. According to Jasmet Singh Sethi, a renowned tech researcher, the future of the mobile phone industry is really different from what we are having now. This is because the demand of people will increase significantly. He further emphasized that the next generation of smartphones will not only be used for calling, checking emails, or watching videos, but most importantly, to have more autonomy and interface on the screen. With this, Sethi said that the development of 5G and Augmented Reality would go hand in hand.

Why Foldable Smartphones Will Dominate the 5G World As the 5G mobile network technology gains popularity, the landscape of mobile phone manufacturing will also improve. According to tech experts, the 5G-enabled phones that will take the market by storm in the future will be foldable. This is because foldable phones are handy without compromising the length of the display. Among the leading manufacturers that will join the race in designing 5G-enabled foldable mobile phones are Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei. Just recently, Samsung released its flagship 5G-enabled foldable phone dubbed as Samsung Galaxy Fold. However, this kind of phone is seemingly not for all because it costs around $2,000. Aside from hefting your budget in purchasing 5G-enabled devices, you also need to prepare for additional costs of your monthly data plan. But despite the additional expenses, you will still pursue and get your 5G-enabled mobile phones due to the overwhelming benefits that you will get.

124

What Constitute 5G’S Core Network Since 5G provides a higher level of telecommunications service, the structure of its network is not ordinary as well. Take a look at the following frameworks that make the 5G network possible. • New Built. 5G requires more than the macro cell tower architecture. In fact, for the 5G network to operate, you need to combine the power of small cell sites, low-power femtocells in streetlamps, micro cells, and home spots to ensure the fastest data transfer. With these structures, even the people living in the outskirt of the city will surely have access to high-speed internet. • Higher Spectrum. To provide fast data transfer, 5G needs to work on a higher spectrum or millimeter waves. Typically, 5G signals work beyond the 24 GHz spectrum. You don’t have to worry about any sanction since 5G’s spectrum shift is sanctioned by the US Federal Communications Commission. The 24 GHz band is the same frequency that is used by the 5G services in South Korea and Japan. • Reliable Data Management System. In North America alone, the average number of devices and connections per capita already reached 7.14 in 2015 and is projected to surge to 12.8 at the close of 2020. What is the implication of this? This means a lot of people own multiple smart devices nowadays. And when you add the other virtual and wearable devices that people use, it is really huge. That is why 5G employs a very reliable data management system that allows the swift transfer of data even there are several data requests. This is the reason why 5G devices don’t experience lag even you use them in the wee hours of the day. -end-

OVID-19 or the coronavirus, is a recently discovered infectious disease that has resulted in a global mobilization against its spread through stringent government mandates such as enforced community quarantines, social distancing, and limited use of services and utilities. Despite the sound validity for the implementation of these laws, their effects on the economy, businesses, utilities, and industries have been detrimental and disadvantageous to say the least. This is why it is integral for the scientists, medical professionals, and chemists of the world must do everything in their power to speed up the process

of creating a vaccine. Aside from eradicating the looming coronavirus with a powerful cure, this will also be the first step in making life for the majority of people normal once more. Since the first report of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, the coronavirus has spread to at least 100 other countries. In fact, as of 9:15am PST, the total worldwide cases totaled to 1,014,673 from 181 affected countries. The good news is that there have been 210,335 recoveries around the world. This is a steadily increasing number made quicker by emerging technologies from different countries. To combat this

emerging pandemic, China leaned heavily on its own technology sector to pave the way to a healed tomorrow. Specifically, artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and technology were utilized by the Chinese government to track and fight the pandemic. Leading tech brands such as Alibaba, Baidu, Huawei and more have accelerated their company’s healthcare initiatives to take care of their employees. This has resulted in tech startups being integrally involved with clinicians, academics, as well as government entities around the world to activate technology as the virus continues to spread to many other countries.

Here are 6 ways artificial intelligence, data science, and technology are being used to manage and fight COVID-19.

1. AI to identify, track, and forecast diagnose the virus Better virus-tracking technologies equals better capabilities to fight COVID-19. AI can very well analyze news reports, social media platforms, and government documents, to detect an outbreak. Tracking infectious disease risks through this method is utilized by Canadian startup BlueDot provides. In fact, they warned the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization of the impending virus days before warnings were issued. AI company Infervision launched a coronavirus AI solution that helps frontliners detect and monitor the disease efficiently through imaging departments in healthcare facilities.

2. Drones deliver supplies Amidst the outbreak, countries have implemented nationwide lockdowns. In relation to this, one of the safest and quickest ways to get supplies (whether medical, food, or other necessary provisions) where they need to go during a disease outbreak is through drone delivery systems by Terra Drone. These unmanned aerial vehicles are capable of transporting medical samples and quarantine material with minimal risk.

3. Develop medicine Google’s DeepMind division used its latest AI algorithms and its computing prowess to understand the proteins and compounds that might constitute the virus. Understanding this will allow scientists and medical professionals to create antiviruses and vaccines. To help the healthcare community, their findings will be accessible to any viewer. Additionally, supercomputers owned by several major tech companies such as Tencent, DiDi, and Huawei are being used by researchers to fast-track the development of the vaccine or antivirus. This is exceptionally helpful as these systems can run calculations and model solutions much faster than standard computer processing.

4. Advanced fabrics make up personal protective equipment Companies such as Israeli startup Sonovia hope to arm healthcare systems and others with face masks made from their anti-pathogen, anti-bacterial fabric that relies on metal-oxide nanoparticles.

5. AI to identify non-compliance or infected status among individuals Undoubtedly a controversial use of technology and AI, surveillance systems may use facial recognition technology and temperature detection software from SenseTime to identify people who may possibly have fever and thus be more likely to have COVID-19. The Chinese government has also developed a monitoring system called Health Code that uses big data to identify and assesses the risk of each individual based on their travel history, how much time they have spent in virus hotspots, and potential exposure to people carrying the virus.

6. Chatbots to share information Tencent operates WeChat and people can access free online health consultation services through the app. These bots have also been integral communication tools for service providers in the various industries, so it may also be utilized for healthcare and virus status updates. These 6 technologies are at the tip of the iceberg. As the world moves forward and adjusts with the reality of the virus, so too are the scientists, medical professionals, healthcare workers, and frontliners working tirelessly to end the spread of COVID-19. Fortunately for them and the entire world, technology brands and inventions just keep appearing and helping them in all the right ways. -end-

T

he coronavirus outbreak has yet to subside even after a month into the second quarter of the year. Save for a handful of countries, the majority of the planet’s population is still reeling from the adverse effects of the virus. The world is gradually adjusting to this viral outbreak with nothing but a sliver of a chance at full recovery. In this state of health-related crisis, governments around the world have implemented community quarantines, social distancing laws, and other mandates that are hellbent on “flattening the curve. While these quarantines do in fact prevent the virus from spreading any further, the only real method of outright killing this virus is state-of-the-art technology and medicinal practices. With just about anything in life, modern problems require modern solutions. Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. If not for the effective and advanced technology solutions, the people would have been caught in the middle of an unmanageable crisis brought about by COVID-19. By mobilizing all available resources and utilizing the latest technological advancements, the world is able to mitigate the effects of the virus to an extent and has profiled people at risk.

144

145

C O V E R

S T O R Y

Here are some ingenious solutions against the coronavirus pandemic that make use of technology.

1. Positioning Technologies It is common knowledge that positioning technologies are integral during crises and disasters. Governments around the world and first responders on the ground require precise positions to accurately assess the situation, determine the most risky areas, deliver relief goods, and carry out rehabilitation efforts accordingly. In the case of epidemics and outbreaks too, global navigation satellite systems come in quite handy. GNSS around the world helped track patients and affected places, thus containing the virus, apart from analyzing the pattern of the outbreak.

2. Satellite Monitoring While thousands of makeshift hospitals were being constructed at breakneck pace around the globe, their progress was continuously being monitored using a constellation of high-resolution earth observation satellites. Laboratories have been proactive in collecting and analyzing multiple data sources, successfully identifying 146

which location in a country would be best suitable for the hospital. By coupling data processing capability with geocoding, a health visualization of COVID-19 was created on which people could see the geographical reach of the virus and could find out the distance between them and active infection.

3. Robotics and Drones From preparing meals at hospitals, doubling up as waiters in restaurants, spraying disinfectants, and delivering goods remotely, to vending rice and dispensing hand sanitizers, robots and drones were on the frontline to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. While these machines can never truly replace human ingenuity, they are important elements in preventing the spread of the virus–– they can get the job done without the risk of being infected themselves, provided they are cleaned thereafter. In many hospitals, these machines were diagnosing patients and conducting thermal imaging. Needless to say, robots and drones have a myriad of uses and are indispensable in the battle against COVID-19.

4. Big Data and Face Recognition

156

Access to public information has led to the creation of dashboards that are continuously monitoring the virus, which several organizations are currently developing. While ethics on face recognition and infrared temperature detection techniques to determine who are infected are questionable at best, it cannot be argued that it is integral for medical progress. Many organizations worldwide have claimed to employ special facial recognition technology that can accurately recognize people despite being masked. Smartphones are also being used to keep a tab on people’s movements and ascertain whether or not they have been in contact with an infected person. A report from Al Jazeera stated that a telecom company sent text messages to state media agencies, informing them about the people who have been infected.

In conclusion, while the world is now bleaker than ever due to the coronavirus pandemic, there exists modern technology built solely to prevent the spread of the virus, cure those positive for COVID-19, and differentiate on a grand scale the healed from the infected. While the methods of using certain technologies warrants a debate over curing the infected vs. infringing upon one’s privacy rights, the pandemic has necessitated that the debate is muted, and rightly so. But it will definitely flare up again, and a few months down the line, we may land up in a really complex situation regarding individual privacy. Again, extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures, and getting rid of the virus, saving lives and resuming normalcy is of paramount interest. -end-

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has transformed the state of the technology industry into a global crisis. It has been evolving at an anomalous rate and size. What this has proven is that no industry is immune to globalscale crises. Industrial equipment is no exception.

Industrial equipment companies are wrestling with the swift impact of the coronavirus as both their manufacturing and supply chain operations are being disturbed, and their customers’ own operations experience somewhat similar challenges. There is an exponential effect down the entire supplier network, affecting industrial equipment companies with a slight delay, but at full force nonetheless.

161

C O V E R

S T O R Y

To top it all off, COVID-19 struck at a time when industrial equipment companies were already experiencing several economic hardships with crystalline signs of a recession in their main markets all over the world. The global economy was cooling down and the production in most worldwide markets has strongly decreased in rate. The pandemic is complicating an already hugely challenging environment even more. To say that the industrial equipment is essential to the world’s economy is a vast understatement. It has over 3 trillion USD in revenues it represents about 25% of the manufacturing GDP with significant manpower, up to 30% of all manufacturing employees all over the world. While preparing for the future, the time to act is now. Manufacturers must be proactive in preserving the probity of their operations and safeguard their workers while preparing for the future post COVID-19. While some companies have started to respond to the immediate crisis by taking baby steps to protect everyone under their employ, supply chains and operations, not all have done so. Unfortunately, even fewer have started to actually see the pandemic as the equally important challenge of planning for the new ways of working come the “new normal. 162

So, how does the industry manage this? Sadly, there is no tailor-fit solution to the issues facing the industry because of the sector’s massiveness and diversity. Global operations are very much dependent on international supply chains which are immensely pressured. Right now, business continuity and prioritization is the focus of the industry. The scale of the impact on supply chains eclipses anything most Industrial companies have had to deal with. And right now, companies must assure their people that the most resilient supply chain possible whilst protecting their workforce. This requires them to: 1. Establish a command center and begin rapid response deployment 2. Rapidly adjust operations and continue response cycle 3. Establish an ongoing operating capability All three of these requirements must be done with a specific pivot and prioritization on their customers’ core needs, as a client-centered work ethic continues to be at the heart of their industry.

Simultaneously, the industrial equipment companies must also allow their people to work from home whenever possible to protect them from the virus, while ensuring the highest levels of productivity. System resilience is paramount, putting even more pressure than before on technology teams and IT infrastructure across the whole enterprise. Digital channels must also be utilized to their fullest extent to keep commercial links with customers and partners as well as the products, machines and assets in operation.

172

With the present threats still looming, companies can only afford a full lockdown of business for a maximum of 2-3 months. The same cash reserves are vital to prepare the company to ramp up business and go back to industrial markets i.e. the money is needed for a post-pandemic industry to transform itself back to the giant it once was prior to the global medical crisis. This requires companies to reprioritize investments and put on hold all non-essential investment programs, as well as launch cost reduction initiatives across the enterprise with both immediate and longer-term impacts.

Whether it will be good or bad for the industry, everyone must accept that the industrial equipment industry will never be the same again. There are a handful of critical business capabilities that manufacturers will have to adjust. These are ‘no regret’ moves that should be anticipated. First, a more elastic workforce and digitally enabled workplace must be implemented. Second, supply chains must be differentiated and made resilient by the customer segment. Third, IT infrastructure and systems are to be distributed. Finally, digital channels and ecommerce platforms are to be uploaded. Companies who develop target-oriented action plans now to tackle these challenges and who execute them when indicators show the time is right will be revived, revitalised, and ready to reap the rewards in a post COVID-19 world. -end173

Public backs up British farmers amid pandemic The survey-led marketing research company, OnePoll, recently revealed in their annual Farmer Favourability Survey that 75% of its participants responded positively about UK farming. This has been a record high figure since OnePoll began carrying out the survey since 2012. In addition to this, the percentage of respondents who claim to have no opinion in farming also significantly decreased from 25% last year to 21% this year. This sudden positivity toward UK farming is all a result of British farmers’ efforts to supply the nation with enough food throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Many of the respondents cited how important the role of the farmers are and how essential farming is to the UK economy. OnePoll also revealed that 77% of the respondents agree that growers and producers should continue to be given financial support despite the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. 194

National Farmers’ Union (NFU) president Minette Batters thanks the public for their increased support in the farming industry of the country, saying how fantastic it is that people are starting to recognize the efforts and hardships growers go through just to keep the nation fed. There are also over a million people who back up NFU’s petition to the government to ensure that future trade deals result in increased food imports.

The country has recently added a beef plant in Canada owned by Cargill Inc., and a pork processing plant in Germany managed by Danish Crown in its list of banned meat imports. This is in addition to the already suspended plant owned by German meat producer Toennies, a plant owned by US-based meat processor Tyson Inc which exports poultry products, and three plants in Brazil. 204

European Banks to provide €12.5 million worth of loans to Romanian farmers struck by pandemic In an effort to help farmers in Romania recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have provided new funds to the financial institution Agricover Credit IFN. The EBRD has added €5 million to the first €15 million it provided to the institution. On the other hand, EIB offered to give an extra €7.5 million. With the help of the new funds, Agricover Credit IFN will be able to expand its financing to the agriculture sector and help the country’s farmers and agribusiness SMEs recuperate from the economic impact of the pandemic. Mark Davis, EBRD Regional Director for Romania and Bulgaria, said that the additional farm funding available will be of significant help to Romania’s agricultural producers whose work has been disrupted and challenged during these trying times. - End 205

Light vehicle sales fell by 18.6% year-onyear (y-o-y) in January, followed by the country’s biggest-ever decline in February with its y-o-y contracting by a little over 79%.

The economic fallout then continued as the outbreak spread worldwide. Come March, the European Union’s light vehicle market recorded a y-o-y contraction of 44%, while the Association of South East Asian Nation’s contracted by 40%. In April, the US experienced a decline on the new passenger vehicle sales, 46% lower than that of the same period last year. These falls in sales can likely be attributed to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase in unemployment rate also translated to a considerable decrease in consumer spending. When it comes to the overall outlook for the year, London-based information provider IHS Markit forecasted that light vehicle sales globally will drop by 22% for 2020, marking a total of over 70 million units. Evidently, the fall in global demand for vehicles during the first quarter of 2020 had significantly affected vehicle-producing countries. This became a crucial problem for emerging markets, such as Thailand, Indonesia, Morocco, and Mexico, all of which house huge automotive manufacturing industries. 210

For instance, Latin America’s top auto manufacturers, Brazil and Mexico, experienced a decrease in production by 99% y-o-y in April. Instead of the typical over 500,000 vehicles, the two countries were building 5600 vehicles between them only. In Thailand, April’s y-o-y production contracted by 84%. In the latter part of May, Nissan announced its plan to cut their production globally by 20%. Plants in both Spain and Indonesia will be closed, and some of their operations will be transferred to Thailand. This sharp drop come as a result of factories closing due to health concerns and demands declining globally. Moreover, some companies had to stop production entirely as the supply of raw parts and materials from China were too delayed. If an extended downturn in the automotive industry across the globe happens, some of these automotive manufacturing countries will likely feel a massive economic pain. Thankfully, while sales activity considerably declined in the wake of the novel coronavirus, a few countries are already recording a rebound in their respective automotive industries. There are also suggestions that the current situation could actually increase the demand in vehicle.

China, the biggest automotive market in the world, for instance, experienced a 4.4% y-o-y increase in sales in April after recording double-digit declines in vehicle sales from January to March. Remarkably, this increase was the country’s first ever in 22 months. Mexico, on the other hand, began to resume factory operations in mid-May, with giant manufacturers like Honda, Nissan, and Toyota rebooting their productions in the country. In Indonesia, operations are set to continue in early June although production lines will initially run at 50% capacity. The turnaround can be likely attributed to the lifting of lockdown measures after three months of inactivity in the country. Other consumer preferences contributed to the increases, as well. This trend can be compared to the SARS outbreak in China in the early 2000s when people tend to avoid public transportation in fear of catching the virus. In turn, the demand for vehicles dramatically rose. 220

Remarkably, April’s Google search data revealed that there has been an increase in searches for car purchasing options both in Europe and the US. Although such searches will not all translate to actual purchases, they still pose a shift in consumer opinion. Most of those interested in purchasing vehicles are from the younger people. In fact, 45% of people under 35 mentioned that they were considering to buy a car this year as discovered by an April survey conducted by French consulting agency Capgemini. This is considerably higher than the overall average of 35%. The survey, where 11 countries, including the US, Germany, China, India, and the UK, participated, also revealed that half of this age group preferred to take their own car more often and take public transport less in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. Over 40% also said that they will lessen the use of ride-hailing services due to concerns on health and safety. - End 221

hile the COVID-19 pandemic rampages the entire globe and continues to threaten lives and livelihoods, the vital role that food retailers play in society become more clarified. Groceries have remained to be essential businesses amidst the crisis, and consumers expect them to provide healthy food options and an abundant supply of food. This clears up the short-term priorities for food retailers worldwide: safeguarding their employees and customers’ health, maintaining the continuation of their business, setting up nerve centers to better manage the organization’s response to COVID-19, and overseeing the demand to meet the supply-chain capacity.

Reimagining Safety, Health, and Supply Chain Scope Since the beginning of the pandemic, consumers across many countries in Asia and Australia have begun to care more about safety in stores and prefer promos that offer healthy and locallysourced products as compared to pre-COVID-19 times. For instance, when it comes to shopping, consumers worry about their personal safety. In fact, one in five Australians and over 50% of Thais are scared of going outside to purchase groceries. When they do, they prefer to go to grocers who consistently maintain hygiene and cleanliness. Consumers also report having an increased focus on their wellbeing and health in light of the outbreak. In all countries excluding China and Japan, more than three-quarters of consumers say they are boosting their immunity by exercising more and eating healthier. Products with perceived health benefits have also rose in sales, while snacks and alcoholic beverages have simultaneously dropped in consumption. 226

In most countries, consumers are showing more preference for local brands over international ones in all categories. Eighty percent of Australians revealed an increase in preference for local brands even before the pandemic began. In China, on the other hand, only 43% say that they prefer foreign brands instead of local ones. This is particularly low considering that foreign brands have a historically strong reputation in the country. In order to satisfy the shift in consumer preferences, retailers should reconsider their offerings and provide more locallysourced and healthier products to customers, including readyto-cook and ready-to-eat items with smaller environmental footprints. They should also take customer safety into consideration, both during in-store purchases and delivery. Already existing technologies, like cash-free transactions and self-checkouts, should be put in place to reduce risks.

Reimagining the Benefits of Technology in Enabling Delivery and the Value Chain As revealed, consumers are switching to online food spending and have yet to revert to their normal spending options. This gives grocers the opportunity to finally digitize their stores. Preference for dine-in spending has experienced a significant drop of 30 to 70% in most countries, while simultaneously saw a rise in grocery shopping and sales of ready-made food, which consumers now prefer more than restaurant meal deliveries. At the same time, the share and frequency of online food spending has increased by roughly 16 to 70% with consumers indicating that they will likely continue this habit even post-pandemic. The only exceptions to this rule are Australia, where two of its biggest grocery retailers stopped online delivery, and Japan, where consumer spending habits have hardly changed. On the other hand, all countries expressed increased interest in self-checkout over cashier assistance during the height of the pandemic. In fact, in Indonesia, 40% of consumers say they will likely use self-checkouts more in the future. 236

To meet current and future demands, food retailers should consider using technology in different ways in a bid to scale up their e-commerce channels and home delivery capacity. They can easily expand their capacities for home delivery by collaborating with cold-storage houses and last-mile players. Other solutions would be expanding warehouse shifts and converting several retail shops into dark stores.

Reimagining the Meaning of Value for Money The past crises have revealed that there are surges in acquisition of private-label and value brands. This proves to be true for most countries, as well, where 30 to 40% of consumers are worried about the outbreak’s impact on their personal finances. Roughly 50% of Chinese consumers are also planning to forgo future purchase because of the uncertainty brought about by COVID-19. To address this, food retailers should plan promotional calendars in order to safeguard their marketing spending. Promos should only be used to stimulate demand for post-crisis essentials and discretionary products. - End 237
