o, what does this mean for HVACR? Of course, smarter HVACR units will be part of equally smart homes. These are modernized wonders of today. Features of these houses will help the household with convenience, safety, efficiency, and ease of use. Heating, lights, appliances, and home security are growing smarter and more connected to everyone through their phones, desktops, and devices. Smart thermostats and air conditioners, for instance, give users the ability to control the temperature with just an app or voice command. An automated heating or ventilation system can also monitor and adjust its levels to maximize efficiency and alert the user when maintenance is required. But perhaps an even more rampant trend in HVACR are the new standards regarding efficiency that have been enforced by many companies. As climate change pushes temperatures even higher from March to August, consumers look for HVACR systems that help keep them cool and help them save money on electricity. In response to that, HVACR companies have gotten more creative. Some companies have introduced heat zoning 4

2020 HVACR Trends systems that allow the adjustments of different temperatures in different parts of the house. Zoning reduces energy in unused rooms and eliminates the longstanding tradition of fighting over the thermostat. Other companies have integrated sustainable sources of energy such as wind or solar, into their heat systems. In conclusion, innovation is fundamentally good and it helps improve the lives of both the manufacturer and the product-buyer. But of course, there will always be challenges. Whether you are an HVACR manufacturer. distributor, or buyer being able to use such a machine can truly be revolutionary for your life. As we move towards the year 2020, we believe that the manufacturers, distributors,

employees, and buyers of the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration industry will be able to make smarter, more logical decisions based on these trends and continue the trend of nearing perfection every day of manufacturing or using an HVACR unit.

F

ood is an integral part of Philippine culture but not everyone can cook. It is, however, something we all should learn. We may never be the next Gordon Ramsay or Jaime Oliver, but we should strive to do more than pop a few leftovers in the microwave, cook rice, or fry a couple of eggs. While it is understandable that cooking is neither a walk in the park nor an inviting skill to learn, since it is very technical and mathematical at its core, an induction cooker makes this important life skill safer, easier, and more fun. Usage of induction cookers is slowly on the rise, trailing and catching up to the two most common, widely used tools for cooking: gas cookers and electric cookers. These two have cemented themselves in our food-loving Filipino culture and have distinct advantages over the other. While gas cookers boast even heating across a person’s

10

cookware, electric cookers are easier to clean. The reason why induction cookers have come neck and neck to these two giants is because of the lack of overall difficulty in using it. An induction cooker takes the beautiful things about its gas and electric counterparts—even heating and ease of cleaning— and peppers it with even more advantages. While induction cookers are the up and coming front-runners in the field of cooking, the TOSOT Induction Cooker stands above the rest in terms of number of advancements. It has a simple, slim, elegant design and a long list of features that keep its expert and novice users and their families in mind, making it revolutionary for meal-making and a surefire way to kick off the road to cooking proficiency. You may not cook as well as Gordon Ramsay or Jamie Oliver even with the TOSOT Induction

Cooker, but you definitely will feel like an expert with these five amazing features:

1. It has a beautiful digital display and touch control panel From smartphones to tablets, touchscreen has been the current technological trend so far. Now you can cook with pride, knowing full well that even your induction cooker has a sleek display, user interface, and is smooth to the touch, giving you access to a wide variety of options.

2. It’s resistant to boiling and overheating Using magnetic currents to directly heat pots and pans instead of igniting a fire on the cooktop or turning on the electric stove, the TOSOT Induction Cooker is an overall more efficient tool to use in the kitchen. You can even crank it up and place your skin against it and nothing will happen. But while your skin won’t burn, the pots and pans will be extremely hot. Other induction cookers aren’t so lucky with extremely hot pots and pans. It is unfortunate to see the induction cooker break by the very thing it superheated. Luckily, the TOSOT Induction Cooker is much more resistant, allowing you to cook to your heart’s content.

3. It keeps kids from hurting themselves If you want to teach your kids how to cook, then sadly, the TOSOT Induction Cooker is not the right tool for the job. With its safety features and child lock design, this state of the art induction cooker cannot be tinkered by children. It may not be fun for the kids, but it is definitely fun for you while you cook with confidence knowing that your kids can’t break it or, unlike with other types of cookers, burn the house down.

4. It has presets, so you can live your chef dreams Soup, double stewed soup, porridge, chaffy dish, barbecue, and stir-fry. These six cooking presets allow you to be the experimental chef you have always wanted to be. You can make an entire Christmas feast using only the innovative TOSOT Induction Cooker.

5. You get freebies! Who doesn’t like freebies? When you purchase a TOSOT Induction Cooker, you also get a free stainless steel cooking pot and non-stick frying pan for all your cooking needs. The cooking pot and frying pan is resistant to heat, giving you that added layer of safety and certainty when cooking. This is especially helpful for new restaurant owners. While there are many more useful features, the TOSOT Induction Cooker is perfect for novice and expert chefs, restaurant owners, and home cooks. This induction cooker is a must have, and kitting your kitchen with this beauty is will just kick your culinary adventure into high gear.

channels and how it changes so frequently. With the upward movement of digital technology, its growing need to evolve, the broadening of the internet, and its ever-increasing importance and relevance in our lives, being present online has become a must for B2C and B2B businesses—this has been the norm for some time. In fact, in the coming year, being absent in the digital space might be treated as an anomaly. Truly, being offline is akin to fighting a losing battle: e-commerce is simply where it’s at now. Anything related to making online transactions and scheduling appointments to set-up an HVACR system in the house all falls under the umbrella theme of e-commerce. This systematized method of buying units has eliminated unnecessary visits to the shop and has cut both time and costs to at least half. Another trend revolves around recruitment into the industry itself. Largely speaking, the 2019 outlook has been positive for the HVACR community. Findings from a 2019 Annual Economic Outlook Survey conducted by the AHR Expo and ASHRAE Journal discovered that 87 percent of respondents are predicting development in the succeeding year. This is highly understandable especially after the previous year saw near record-breaking demand for HVACR equipment and services. The economy has been on a steady rise and consumer confidence has never been higher. Sadly, it doesn’t come without its own share of caveats. The question is: who will be making, distributing, selling, and installing these new HVACR units and products? Alongside consumer confidence and economical rise, concern over labor supply in HVACR has also been proportionately growing over the past few years. As manufacturers work to further innovate new products as well as answer user-generated reviews, their products have since become increasingly intricate to build and set up. This means that a higher demand for complex products will require more and more skilled labor. From the years 2016-2026, HVACR mechanic and installer job openings are expected to increase by 15 percent. This will be coupled with the fact that the majority of baby boomers have since retired or are preparing to enter retirement. This means a major labor shortage is bound to happen should millennials and their succeeding generations, the Gen Z set their eyes on another career path for themselves. Despite the coming drought, there seems to be hope in the form of new technologies. Now, everyone has a smart phone or some oth18

MIDDLE EAST NEWS

24TH World Energy Congress Concludes with Celebration of Innovation & Entrepreneurship Dmitry Kozak, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, and Alexander Novak, Minister of Energy, Russian Federation, announce Russia’s hosting of 25th World Energy Congress in 2022 The need for courageous entrepreneurship to tackle tomorrow’s key energy issues, using 5G to stimulate a drive towards sustainability and how collaborations can lead to faster, better and cheaper energy were among the issues addressed during the fourth and final day of the 24th World Energy Congress. Maintaining the momentum of the previous three days of high-level discussions, the closing sessions at the World Energy Congress welcomed some of the UAE’s highest profile business leaders as well as distinguished industry figures, exciting young thinkers and government ministers under the theme of ‘Innovation: The pathway to prosperity”. Thursday saw extensive debates covering issues critical to the future of energy production, supply and distribution and how bold entrepreneurship can shape the culture of innovation needed in rapidly changing world.

UTILIZING ADVANCES IN COMMUNICATION TO DRIVE SUSTAINABILITY The day’s keynote speech saw Khalifa Hassan Alforah Alshamsi, Etisalat’s Group Chief Corporate Strategy & Governance Officer, explain how the newest generation of mobile technology can be harnessed to promote sustainability in the energy sector. His address, titled ‘Leveraging 5G to drive sustainability and enable innovation in the energy sector’ outlined how improved 46

communication between individuals, companies and entities, including greater access to information and better utilisation of the internet, can boost the ongoing drive towards sustainability. Mr Alshamsi said: “5G is a new piece of technology that can revolutionise new industry. It is not only about speed but yes it will be phenomenal for VR and AR experiences. “5G is a fundamental tool that will benefit cities, countries, factories and refineries because 5G is the cornerstone for industry and key for the future of digital. “To make the most of what 5G can offer, it is all about collaboration and innovation. This will not happen by just sitting down in the office. We have to connect our minds together and have to experiment. We can do anything if we have the will,” said Mr Alshamsi.

EMPOWERING TODAY’S ENTREPRENEURS TO SOLVE TOMORROW’S PROBLEMS As well as bringing together key figures from the energy sector, World Energy Congress also supports and inspires the leaders, innovators and thinkers of tomorrow. The session ‘Start-up Energy Transition: The power of the bold’ saw a panel of experts, among them the winners of this year’s Start up Energy Transition Award, debate, discuss and predict the most pressing energy challenges the world will face in years to come. Marwan Bin Haidar, Executive Vice President of Innovation & The Future, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), joined the delegates to consider the new business models, technologies

and ideas that will be at the forefront of the industry’s ongoing transition.

to discover the next global game-changing idea or invention for the energy sector.

Mr Bin Haidar explained that all companies must “innovate or stagnate” and that incorporating brave and bold new ideas developed by start-ups is key to a successful future for established firms.

An interactive, energetic and highly engaging event, the SET finalists were challenged to outline the benefits of their idea, its practical uses and why investors should get behind them as part of a professional pitch.

“The company receives new, bold ideas and solutions while the start-ups can benefit from years of experience and understanding of the industry,” said Mr Bin Haidar. “In this way, everyone benefits.” Andreas Kulmann, Chief Executive of the German energy company Deutsche EnergieAgentur, echoed Mr Bin Haidar’s comments adding that for start-ups “being bold is one thing, but being smart is another”. “Discovering what is important for all partners and what is important for the market can be difficult, but if start-ups are smart, bold and very well prepared to grow and develop collaboration, they and their partners will flourish,” he said.

FINDING SOLUTIONS THROUGH CREATIVITY, PASSION AND VISION At the session ‘Pitch perfect: Best of the Start-up Energy Transition (SET)’ Michele Fiorentino, Chief Investment Officer, ADNOC, joined a panel of judges to consider the ideas set out by SET finalists

Ten Innovativev Solutions of Social Incubator Program in Abu Dhabi Rewarded AED 4.4 Million Investment to Support People of Determination Ma’an announced today the ten winning teams in the first cycle of the Ma’an Social Incubator program. Ma’an is part of the ‘Ghadan 21’ accelerated development programme designed to spur diversity and growth in Abu Dhabi’s economy to make it one of the best places in the world to do business, invest, live, work and visit. The winning projects include a mobile app that helps convert text to sign language and another that helps people with visual impairments to navigate their surroundings through sensors and visual recognition. Among the winners of this year’s edition, six teams were local, while four teams were international. The event this morning announcing the ten winning projects was attended by His Excellency Sheikh Abdulla Bin Mohamed Al Hamed, Chairman of Department of Health; His Excellency Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development; His Excellency Abdullah Abdulali 58

Al Humaidan, Secretary General of Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination; His Excellency Hamad Al Dhaheri, Director General of the Social Support Authority; and Her Excellency Salama Al Amimi, Director General, Authority of Social Contribution - Ma’an. The Ma’an Social Incubator program is the first of its kind in the region, with each of the ten teams eligible to receive funding up to AED 200,000 released at every successful milestone the participant reaches, as well as support for living and housing expenses for non-residents of Abu Dhabi. The program aims to support and develop innovative social concepts and start-up projects so they may become social institutions or civil facilities with an active role in helping people of determination in facing challenges in their communities, offering them solutions that improve their quality of life and achieve their ambitions. The Ma’an Social Incubator program also provides the necessary and specialized support needed

for these projects to be sustainable, offering the guidance and tools needed for growth, including financial and moral support, as well as office space, business expertise and access to possible investors. Since launching the program in May earlier this year, 130 ventures applied for the Ma’an Social Incubator program from as far afield as Brazil, Denmark, France, Nigeria and India. Later in August, a shortlist of 25 nominated teams were invited to pitch their solutions before a panel who came together to decide on the final ten winning teams. The teams will have the opportunity to test their social start-up ideas and gain an in-depth understanding of the market, in addition to attending a series of plenary workshops and receiving mentor advice that will help them develop their idea into a product or service, beginning in September and continuing for 16 weeks. Ma’an was established in February 2019 by the Department of Community Development in Abu Dhabi with the aim of bringing together the government, the private sector and civil society to support a culture of social contribution and participation. The authority will deliver solutions for social challenges with four main pillars of work – a Social Investment Fund, a Social Incubator Program, Community Engagement Programs and the introduction of a new type of public contracting, Social Impact Bonds. Ma’an seeks to reinforce the culture of giving in Abu Dhabi, and establish the volunteering needs of the community, aiming to make us of the currently available social volunteering opportunities and initiatives, as well as contribute by generating new opportunities. Her Excellency Ms. Salama Al Ameemi, Director General of Ma’an said: “We are absolutely delighted with the incredibly innovative ten solutions that have been awarded a place in the Ma’an Social Incubator program, and are now fully focused on helping the entrepreneurs to make their dream become a reality. “These social start-ups will contribute towards establishing sustainable social solutions for people of determination and raising their standard of living in Abu Dhabi and the UAE in general,

with an ambition for global impact in the future. This is a hugely important phase in our first incubator program, and we are very much looking forward to working with the committed and passionate people leading each of the start-ups, making their concepts and projects a reality.” The program offers unique and valuable networking opportunities for the teams to build relationships with individuals outside of the program, including investors, third sector leaders, industry figures, and decision makers in specialized fields regionally and internationally. Ma’an will also host ‘demo days’ to present the concepts of the ten winning team organised for review and evaluation, as well as to leverage funding from investors.

The 10 successful start-ups are: 1. Accessible Ad: Platform for information, expertise, training and support to ensure effective accessibility for People of Determination in Abu Dhabi 2. The Butterfly Foundation: Advocacy agency to bring support and empowerment in the hands of People of Determination in Abu Dhabi 3. 12V Waterproof Actuator One of the distinctive advantages of the waterproof linear actuators is undoubtedly their simple design

increases the resistance of the product to disadvantageous factors. Waterproof electric linear actuators of Progressive Automations manufacturer can be used for the various types of sea works. This can be a shipbuilding industry where this technology may come in handy for the construction of automated boat hatches that of military submarines where they can be responsible for the pressure control which is essential for the submarines’ operability. There are three basic types of water protection: • IP54 – provides protection against water splashes penetration from all sides; • IP65 – prevents the penetration of water flows inside the case at any possible angle; • IP67 – with such protection the device is capable to function when fully submerged under the water.

E

lectric linear actuators are the mechanisms, the core task of which is the transfer of force from the control device to the executive one. Linear actuators vary in the way they transfer their energy. At the same time, the object controlled can be driven by a rotational or linear motion action. One of the distinctive advantages of the waterproof linear actuators is undoubtedly their simple design. Due to this, actuators have an impressively long-lasting life service, in addition, they do not require regular maintenance and are unpretentious to the conditions. Simple execution allows using devices even in unfavorable climatic conditions. Depending on the manufacturer, models may have additional protection that

66

For example, PA-06 linear actuator model of Progressive Automations has the IP67 water protection meaning that this device is really capable to function even when fully submerged into the water and even when being at a significant depth. The minimum technical specifications of such waterproof electric linear actuator are the following: stroke – 2 inches, force – 22 Ibs, speed – 1.38 inches/sec, whereas the maximum technical specifications are like this: stroke – 24 inches, force – 180 Ibs, speed – 0.47 inches/sec. Customers can choose technical specifications so that they could adjust their waterproof linear actuators according to the needs of performance wanted. The PA-06 electric linear actuator of Progressive Automations is capable of working under the harshest conditions and withstand water, and other potentially unwanted liquids, however for short periods of time. This high-rated quality makes this kind of electric linear actuators to be the most popular choice for marine engineering. Such actuators

are capable to work within -20 to +60 °C temperature window. The warranty covering this electric actuator lasts for 18 months since the purchase. This linear actuator is mounted with the help of BRK-06 mounting brackets that make the installation process extremely easy. Furthermore, this kind of electric actuators is compatible with a whole range of control systems and control boxes transforming the operation process into a pleasure. Control boxes allow installing electric linear actuators of high water protection merely everywhere if dimensions are suitable for their installation. Actuators of Progressive Automations all-thetime provide the most effective performance while at the same time they are always reliable. These actuators can easily undergo

the most terrific weather conditions and prove themselves to be the best solution where other alike technologies feel themselves uncomfortable and present poor performance. During long-lasting periods of work under heavy workloads such actuators of Progressive Automations show the highest resistance towards harsh environment conditions. Such type of electric linear actuators can be easily adjusted for various types of work more or less associated with serious humidity and marine implementation. Preferring the waterproof actuators of Progressive Automations customers make their investment into the qualitative and long-lasting technology that will fully justify their expectations.

Is Your Cyber Prevention Plan Up To Date?

C

yber defences need continuous development. Even the latest cyber protection strategies will have limited lifespans, and cyberprotection obsolescence is a common issue when it comes to protecting a business. The latest updates to your malware and password protection systems will not remain effective if they are not regularly checked to make sure that they remain up to date, and able to tackle the latest cybercrime trends. With new threats emerging regularly, keeping one step ahead of cybercriminals means ensuring that your cyber defenses are as up to date as possible, and that means being aware of the latest

70

threats and how to protect your business from them.

Team Awareness The weakest point of any defence strategy is always going to be people. That’s why you need to ensure that you develop a strong culture of security within your business. Enforcing a solid and robust security process is vital if you want to keep your customers, staff, and business safe. Make sure that your team is aware of: • Your defense architecture • Security protocols • Basic security standards Keep these measures updated, and you will be better able to

protect yourself from threat. Updated Software and Hardware Hackers are always looking for an exploitable weakness that they can make use of. That’s why you need to keep your software and hardware updated as much as possible. Those updates are generally designed to deal with specific new threats, so failing to update means that you are exposed to unnecessary risk. Endpoint management is being used by more companies than ever, as it allows for faster recognition of threats from a zero-day standpoint. Cost-effective and automated endpoint management using recognized tools like McAfee can go a long way to keeping your business safer.

Protecting Code

Network Monitoring

Open source code is fast becoming a necessity. This is because demands on developers are too fast for software development to keep up with. Unfortunately, open-source code comes with a variety of challenges in terms of both security and compliance. If your business makes use of open source code, then you need to make certain that you have the available resources and manpower needed to review that code for bugs, licensing issues, and security risks. Failing to do so means exposing yourself to the potential harm caused by allowing malicious actors into your software.

All of the data that your company processes needs to be stringently monitored at all times. It is only through regular monitoring that you will be able to identify the procedures and patterns of safe behavior. This monitoring can be automated with a Security Information and Event management system, but the human element of this monitoring should not be overlooked. Privilege management in terms of access to data is a key element of network monitoring, so segmentation of those privileges is not just an option to consider but a vital necessity in the digital age.

There are just as many ways to protect a business as there are to cause it harm. This means ensuring that your security processes are as tight as possible and get ongoing evaluations. When hackers take advantage of both technological and human weaknesses to gain access to the inner workings of a business, the consequences can be devastating.

Food for Thought: These Foods Will Keep You More Focused and Alert at Work The average workday doesn’t just start at 8 and end at 5. It starts long before that with waking up, getting ready, getting out the door, commuting and then it ends in reverse. Staying sharp and focused can be a real struggle for many people, especially engineers. In this article, we’ll show you how to keep your edge all day long no matter what profession you’re in.

Start the Day off Right This does not mean the sugar-laden coffee drinks or the donut cart at the office. It means high protein and nutrient-loaded. Even if you have to grab-and-go something, make it something real and not processed. Eggs, even hard-boiled, are a fast, portable way to get charged without an eventual crash. Pre-packaged portions of cheese are great, too! Keep them in the fridge and grab a few before you head out. Keep some bottled water in there to avoid that detour to the coffee joint. Your brain will thank you later! 74

Mid-Morning Munchies They’re a real thing, aren’t they? Control the urge to reach for yet another cup of coffee and the box of Danish in the breakroom. Keep some nuts or trail mix or some power bars and re-fuel! This is a good time to indulge in some healthy fats like avocados or cheese as well!

Lunch is Not Dinner Whether or not your job requires you to be a desk jockey or a real jockey, lunch isn’t an all-you-can-eat at the trough event. Work potlucks and birthday celebrations can be fun, but they are often heavy on conveniences like chips and dip and greasy, carbohydrate-laden casseroles. Not to mention every kind of cookie and that overly frosted birthday cake. Just remind yourself that getting seconds (or thirds) will leave you hibernating under your desk before you know it! Bring your own food, opting for proteins like chicken, tuna, or even last night’s leftover grilled salmon. Cooking at home using appliances like an electric grill helps to curb the bad fats in your meal and they also taste pretty great too! If you can, sneak away and take a walk outside. Regardless of the weather, a brisk walk to get some fresh air in your lungs can power you through the day!

The Dreaded Slump Here you are at 3 PM with two hours to go and everything on your desk reads like a foreign language. Resist the temptation to spike your

blood sugar with candy bars and soda and take this opportunity to breathe deeply, stretch, take a quick stroll if you can. If that doesn’t perk you up, grab the kinds of snacks that will keep you alert without the inevitable crash of processed foods and beverages. Cubes of cheese and salami, celery or apples with peanut butter, raw carrots or other veggies, or a handful of berries will keep the Munchie Monster away until your great escape at workday’s end. 78

However, if you must treat yourself, a small microwave bag of popcorn will do in a pinch. So will a few squares of dark chocolate (70 to 85% cocoa). In fact, studies prove that not only does high-quality dark chocolate do wonders for your brain, but dark chocolate has been proven to improve memory and cognitive skills. It’s a win-win, not only for your focus but your attitude – which your coworkers will appreciate!

To Sum Up Regardless of your career ‘lifestyle’, it’s important to be mindful of what you are eating and drinking throughout the workday. Whether you sit at a desk or behind the wheel, work can be stressful. Coworkers can be stressful. But fueling your body with the right foods can keep you performing like the Rockstar your boss thinks you are!
