veryone is concerned about global warming nowadays, especially that its effect can already be felt in different regions worldwide. Because of this, multinational companies and various industries are trying to find solutions or at least a way to curtail the harmful effects of global warming. Yes, this issue is something that humans will not be able to control, but everyone believes that it is not yet too late to save Mother Nature.
HVACR Sustainability All the sectors are helping hand in hand to minimize the repercussions of global warming by doing their share. The Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) industry are conducting studies to facilitate the safe use of refrigerants and find climate-friendly alternatives. It is also their goal to find solutions in improving indoor air quality to safeguard the health of the people.
Challenges in HVAC Industry Apparently, this is a considerable challenge for the HVACR sector, but industry leaders and associations like the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and 4
Sustainability in the HVACR Industry Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) are working hard to find solutions. Researchers consider both indoor and outdoor environment in terms of HVAC operations. They want to make sure that the people and the environment are safe from harmful chemicals. As a result of their studies, guidelines for zero energy buildings are being created. Since HVAC is the most energy-intensive mechanism, it is vital to reduce the wasted HVAC energy consumption. If this is achieved, it can push for greater sustainability and reduce costs in the business world.
Green Technology in HVAC The HVAC Green Technology involves sustainability, source reduction, innovation, viability, and the “cradle to cradle” design. Olesen said. He added that the $5.2mn investment would help accelerate studies on the safe use of refrigerants. The technical knowledge gained from studies could also help determine any additional climate-friendly alternatives. One of the results of their studies is the creation of guidelines for zero energy buildings.

Strategies for HVAC Green Technology and Sustainability The HVACR industry employs Green Technology, which involves utilizing methods and materials for developing more environment-friendly techniques. It aims to find better strategies compared to the ones previously used by the industry. Older practices are not only harmful to the environment, but they are also more expensive. To achieve sustainability, these strategies should be implemented:

1. Sustainability. This refers
to the ability to exist continually by conserving natural resources. More research and development is needed to help manufacturers that are struggling to make equipment more efficient. The Department of Energy and other HVAC industrial manufacturers supplement this research. For instance, ALCOA, a large producer of aluminum made from recycled raw materials, sponsored a study to determine ways on how to develop better heat exchang-

ers using aluminum materials. This step helps improve HVAC and contribute to the sustainability of Green Technology.
2. Source Reduction. For
this strategy, waste and pollution are reduced by using new methods of energy consumption and production. The conservation of energy through changing old methods helps the environment. The development of smart HVAC systems can help with Source Reduction by making equipment more precise. Controls are designed for this equipment so it can be customized depending on the amount of energy needed.
3. Innovation. The HVACR
industry should also focus on the development of new innovations and technologies to decrease the use of harmful chemicals and fossil fuels. Fortunately, the sector is consistently working on new innovations and are taking steps to help the environment. An excellent example of that is the recent change in the use of CFC refrigerants and the planned elimination of HCFC refrigerants, replacing it with HFC. Technological advancement also made it possible to control HVAC and lighting systems, which helps to reduce energy consumption.

5. Cradle to Cradle Design.
Another important strategy is designing products that can be recycled into new products or be fully reclaimed at the end of its lifestyle. In the HVACR industry, everything used in its 18
equipment can be recycled like used refrigerants. Some components used in air conditioning and heating equipment also have high recycle value like the coils of condensers and evaporators. Once the HVAC industry implements the strategies mentioned above, they will no doubt protect the people and the environment. Since the leaders of the sector are working together to achieve this, we can hope for a future with sustainable HVACR.

Canadian Pacific Chooses Thermo King’s New SLXi-DRC Refrigeration Unit for Increased Cargo Space and Sustainability Thermo King’s SLXi Domestic Reefer Container (DRC) unit offers additional space for cargo and significantly reduces the global warming potential – Thermo King, a leader in transport temperature control solutions for a variety of mobile applications and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, is pleased to announce that Canadian Pacific Railway Limited (CP) has selected its SLXi-DRC units to 22
fulfill its largest, single domestic reefer container (DRC) order in Canadian history. CP is the first Thermo King customer to purchase the SLXiDRC unit in North America The SLXi-DRC units have a slim profile, which increases cargo capacity by providing room for an extra pallet row of cargo space in the container. The SLXi-DRC also uses next-generation, lower global warming potential (GWP)
CP and Thermo King collaborated on an extensive, four-month field test of the new SLXi-DRC unit to verify performance of the technology in the rugged environment and climate of Canadian’s railways. “We installed the unit on a six-year-old CP container and tested performance on a variety of loads – from fresh, to frozen, to pharmaceuticals, and on temperature extremes of -15 to 65 degrees F,” said Don Bradd, vice president and general manager, Thermo King Eastern Canada. “Performance downloads were taken regularly and our partners at CP recorded fuel levels before and after every trip. Internal box temperatures were always well below targets, and fuel economy, quality and reliability were all proven with the SLXi-DRC unit.”

Consolidating the competitiveness of its Oil Free Centrifugal chiller portfolio, Daikin has launched a new highly advanced Centrifugal Oil Free water-cooled inverter chiller series with R-134a and R-1234ze(E) refrigerants. Offering increased capacities and expanded applications possibilities, the new chillers are the latest in an array of inno26
vative products developed by Daikin to help specifiers and end users stay one step ahead of EU legislation and rising energy costs. The extremely compact DZ chiller series incorporates advanced technology features that are unique in the market. Presenting up to 32% reduction in footprint if compared to the
previous series, the new chiller provides a low noise solution with dedicated compressor sound proof cabinet to ensure outstanding flexibility to match any application. The series is available in a wide range of capacities offering the widest possible choice in use. All models are fitted with a single refrigerant circuit. The R134a range (EWWD-DZ) offers a choice of cooling capacity from 320 kW up to 1,478 kW at nominal conditions, with single compressor models providing an output up to 742 kW and dual compressor models between 610 kW to 1,478 kW. The R-1234ze(E) range (EWWH-DZ) is available in cooling capacities from 230 kW up to 952 kW at nominal conditions, including single compressor models up to 478 kW and dual compressor models between 430 kW to 952 kW.
Future proof The use of R-1234ze(E) offers an environmentally friendly solution, combining a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) with high energy efficiency. R-1234ze(E) is an HFO refrigerant (Hydro Fluoro Olefins). Its Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) is equal to zero (0) and the GWP is 7 (according to the EU F-gas Regulation based on IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report). The GWP value is less than 1 according to the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report. The introduction of the new R-1234ze(E) range provides a long-term solution that supports the HFC phase down schedule of the F-gas Regulation.

The Federal Electricity & Water Authority (FEWA) and a consortium consisting of ACWA Power, a global leader in water desalination and power generation, and MDC Power Holding Company LLC, an entity fully owned by Mubadala Investment Company PJSC (Mubadala), has entered into a water purchase agreement for a 150 million imperial gallon per day desalination plant in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain. The plant will utilise Seawater Reverse Osmosis technology.
His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saud Al Mualla, Crown Prince of the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, stated: “The crucial and strategic project in Umm Al Quwain is considered an important milestone in the series of development projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as it enhances the partnership between the public and private sectors and reflects positivity on the overall national economy; the project is also strategically located between Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah”.
Under the terms of the agreement FEWA will hold 20 percent of the stake, while ACWA Power and Mubadala will each own 40 percent. The

project is FEWA’s first asset in partnership with the private sector. Its implementation will reinforce UAE’s Water Security Strategy 2036 as well as bolster its core programmes. The plant is set to supply 150 million imperial gallons per day to the Northern Emirates and will prompt the private sector to further invest in those areas.” Once commissioned, the Umm Al Quwain plant will be the largest desalination project in the Northern Emirates. The project cost is deemed as highly competitive and will utilize state of the art technology allowing it to efficiently produce water while preserving the environment. Construction is expected to commence in the second half of 2019, with initial water production scheduled in 2021.
The project is part of the UAE’s effort to optimise water production and meet the increasing demand for water in the country. Mohammad Mohammad Saleh, Director General of FEWA said: “This project will be FEWA’s first IWP project to be held in the Northern Emirates, which will help in utilizing an efficient water generation system to meet and secure the demands of both residential and agriculture sectors with competitive economical prices. FEWA will continue to achieve its ambitious vision of meeting the growing water demands in the Northern Emirates by improving and investing in its water facilities infrastructure and seeking to adapt new technologies to enhance sustainable developments.” “Our agreement with FEWA is a strong indicator of how ACWA Power has developed a stronghold in the United Arab Emirates. Setting up the first IPP infrastructure in Umm Al Quwain, while simultaneously expanding our portfolio of projects is a major milestone for us. Advanced Stadium Cooling: Innovative Technology Coming to the Qatar World Cup Every stadium has it’s own unique form and structure
The 2018 World Cup marked the World Cup debut of using the Video Assistant Referee, also known as VAR, as the newest technological innovation coming to the stadiums. According to FIFA, the VAR system had a success rate of 99.3 percent and many football analysts have praised the introduction of VAR. In their opinion, the World Cup was a perfect example of how technology can work well for football, although it did show that there are some risks involved in relying on the technology. In 2022, when the World Cup will be played in Qatar, a newer and bigger technical innovation will come to the stadiums. All host stadiums will be air-conditioned, making it doable to organize the World Cup in a country with extreme heats. Since Qatar was announced as the competition’s host in December 2010, many have been critical of the controversial choice wondering how an event like the World Cup could be organized in the desert. 36
In only one generation, Qatar has transformed from a handful of poor fishing villages into the richest country per capita in the world. It turns out if you combine gas revenues with foreign labor and the firm hand of the ruling monarchy, a country can be transformed rather quickly. Now, Qatar is taking on one of the biggest sports events the world has to offer. Because of the extreme heat, revolutionary cooling technology is going to be used at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after tests proved everything is working as it should at the proposed World Cup stadiums. The development is an important step in the build-up to the tournament, which has courted controversy since Qatar was announced as the competition’s host. The 2022 tournament is therefore being held in winter for the first time, to avoid the searing summer heat. With temperatures averaging 42
degrees Celsius in summer, the decision was made to move the dates of the World Cup to winter, when temperatures around 30 degrees are to be expected. This is the reason why the stadiums will have air-conditioning installed, in order to bring down the temperature to about 20 degrees on the pitch and 23 degrees in the stands. The innovation being trialed in Qatar involves a system where cold air is being pumped into stadiums through a system powered by chilled water, which is the transformed into a cold mist after passing through cooling nozzles. They way it works is that the platform of the stadium is used to defend it against the infiltration of warm wind. This means the stadium is a barrier that is basically containing a cold bubble inside. The technology works by maintaining the cold bubble for as long as necessary in order for people to watch the game, and so the players are comfortable enough to play their game. The Al Wakrah Stadium also has a roof that can be opened and a seating-bowl cooling system to allow football to be played all-year round. At Al Wakrah Stadium, they are using an air circulation 38
