Solar Power Arriving in Dubai’s Leading Dry Ice and Industrial Gas Producer solar plant will generate over 850 MWh of clean energy in its first year of operation, enough to power 40 Dubai homes for a year. Switching to solar power will also help Arabian Industrial Gases reduce CO2 emissions by almost 500 tons per year. Jeremy Crane, CEO and Co-founder of Yellow Door Energy, said, “We’re proud to be working with Arabian Industrial Gases and look forward to forging a close relationship with the team. We hope that other manufacturers will follow their lead in joining the solar transition.”
Yellow Door Energy and Arabian Industrial Gases have signed a 20-year lease to provide solar power for Arabian Industrial Gases’ manufacturing facility in Dubai Investments Park, Dubai. This is Yellow Door Energy’s 10th solar lease in Dubai under the Shams Dubai net metering scheme. “As a world-class Industrial & Medical Gas company operating across 12 countries with a strong presence across the GCC, our decision to go solar at our Dubai based facility was driven by our desire to help build a sustainable environment within 8

the communities in which we operate,” shared Sami Huneidi, General Manager of Arabian Industrial Gases, a subsidiary of the Gulf Cryo Group. “Yellow Door Energy’s solar lease provided us with the platform to address our sustainability goals, while reducing our utility bills in a competitive environment with rising costs. It was an easy decision to make.” As the solar lease provider, Yellow Door Energy will finance, design, build, operate and maintain the solar plant for the next 20 years, after which the plant belongs to Arabian Industrial Gases. The
The rooftop solar PV installation represents another important success under the Shams Dubai initiative, launched by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to encourage the adoption of solar energy generation in buildings and move the Emirate one step closer to achieving the Dubai 2050 Clean Energy Strategy. DEWA launched Shams Dubai to support the Smart Dubai initiative launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world.

The idea is to tightly integrate master and sensor data, as well as measurement values, into customer business, logistics and production processes and develop new digital services focused on predictive maintenance and predictive quality. An open platform concept forms the basis for this approach. “Two innovative companies have come together here to realize the end-to-end OT/ IT integration from field instrument all the way to business processes,” said Hala Zeine, SAP’s President of Digital Supply Chain and Manufacturing. “When it comes to digitalization, successful companies will be those able to tie their systems directly to business processes, thus reliably and fully opening up or circumventing the classic automation pyramid,” explained Matthias Altendorf, CEO of the Endress+Hauser Group. “We and SAP share a common vision of implementing this strategy to the benefit of our customers.” Endress+Hauser’s role in the partnership involves delivering the field instrumentation knowledge so critical to plant operators in the form of digital services, which will be implemented by integrating the existing Endress+Hauser IIoT services and the SAP platform using a standardized approach.
SAP and Endress+Hauser will intensify their cooperation in the development of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications for the process industry. The enterprise software market leader and the specialist for process and laboratory measurement technology made the announcement during ACHEMA in Frankfurt, Germany, the world’s leading trade fair for the process industry. In future, both companies intend to work closer together in the development of joint solutions, sales and customer implementation. The goal is to fully integrate the Endress+Hauser field instruments as digital twins into the SAP cloud platform. Both companies want to take advantage of the services and smart apps from SAP’s Leonardo system as well as Endress+Hauser’s IIoT offering.
From the initial creation and automatic updating of a digital twin across the entire product life cycle, to end-to-end connectivity from the sensor to the SAP IT platform, Endress+Hauser is supporting the digitalization strategy of its entire customer base. SAP demonstrates the concrete benefits of the SAP Leonardo system as an innovation platform. In the SAP Asset Intelligence Network, field instruments are represented as digital twins, which serve as a basis for integration into the customer’s business processes. Using SAP Leonardo technologies like Machine Learning, Analytics and Blockchain, intelligent services can be flexibly enabled for the production environment. Fajr Capital Completes Exit From National Petroleum Services
Fajr Capital has today announced that it has completed the sale of its investment in National Petroleum Services (“NPS”) to National Energy Services Reunited Corp. (“NESR”) (NASDAQ: NESR). On 13 November 2017, Fajr Capital announced the signing of a definitive agreement to fully exit its significant minority stake in NPS along with its consortium partners. The transaction was subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, all of which have been satisfied and granted. Following the successful closing, NPS will combine with NESR and Gulf Energy SAOC (“GES”) to become the first and only listed national oilfield services company (collectively, the “Company”) in the Middle East and North Africa region. The leadership team of NPS will remain with the Company in management, senior advisory, and board positions. The Company’s primary operating locations will be 12

in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, Muscat, Oman and Dubai, UAE. Innovative Solutions, the Emerson Way Emerson’s expanding footprint in the Middle East and Africa includes the establishment of a Final Control Service Center in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Oilfield Services (ADOS) to provide quick access for our control valves, ensuring accessibility for customers in the region. We have also established a new facility in Lagos, Nigeria, expanded our facilities in Basra, Iraq, and opened the first Flow Calibration and Service Center for Middle East and Africa in Dubai, UAE. Included in Emerson’s global growth is the acquisition of new businesses that will add valuable opportunities to the company’s business all over the world. Such acquisitions that took place within the past two years include Pentair Valves & Controls that helped us establish our global presence in control, isolation, pressure relief valves, and actuation. Another is Paradigm, allowing us to expand our portfolio to complement the Roxar software business. The acquisition of GeoFields aided us in further establishing their position as a comprehensive solutions provider for pipeline operations management. Aventics, a recent acquisition, strengthens and builds upon Emerson’s capabilities and solutions in key discrete and hybrid automation markets. Emerson continues to innovate on new technologies’ solutions-based designs that address their challenges. Making significant investment in research and development, Emerson’s design team focuses on the importance of human-centered design, creating intuitive products and software that aid customers in dealing with the depletion of the experienced workforce, and initiating a new generation of innovators into the industry.
The Company’s Most Notable Projects 1. Emerson signs Agreement with Saudi Aramco to collaborate on Digital Transformation – In June of 2017, Emerson CEO David Farr and Saudi Aramco President and CEO Amin H. Nasser signed a Memorandum of Agreement that focuses on advanced digitization and automation technologies for one of the leading energy and chemicals companies. 2. New Emerson facility in Dhahran Techno Valley – The facility in Dhahran Techno 22

Valley in Saudi Arabia allows Emerson to host Saudi entrepreneurs, students, researchers, and industry stakeholders in collaborating with Emerson’s technical experts in the development of process automation technologies and innovative products and solutions that meet the country’s goals and ensure global access to Emerson’s research and development expertise.
3. Emerson donates Oil and Gas Reservoir Characterization Software Licenses to the AUC– As part of its initiative to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in industries and communities around the world, Emerson has donated licenses for its oil and gas reservoir characterization and engineering software (Roxar RMS, Roxar Tempest Suite, and Roxar METTE) to the American University in Cairo (AUC). 4. Emerson’s new manufacturing facility in Dammam, Saudi Arabia – Emerson has opened a new manufacturing facility in Dammam First Industrial City in Saudi Arabia to expand its local manufacturing project execution and service capabilities by providing engineering, staging, commissioning, operational support,
maintenance support, repair, field services and training support to customers in the capital of Saudi Arabia’s eastern region. 5. Emerson aids Kuwait Oil Company in maximizing the value of reservoir assets – Emerson has supplied Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) with the Roxar RMS reservoir modelling software to aid in building accurate and detailed reservoir models. This new contract builds on KOC’s wide adoption of the previously purchased Roxar RMS software which was crucial in providing input in well placing and determination of the wellbore trajectory in potentially productive parts of the reservoir, and in reducing the geosteering risk for sidetracked wells. 6. Emerson’s Solutions Center and Education Center in Dubai – Emerson has established the Solutions Center and Education Center in the Jebel Ali Free Zone in Dubai, UAE. The Solutions Center provides customers with an immersive, hands-on experience of the latest technology for operations management, while the Education Center supports and strengthens Emerson’s capability in helping customers train and improve their workforce’s skills.
7. Emerson provides automated service to Tahrir Petrochemicals – Emerson has been selected to provide automation, reliability technologies, and services for Carbon Holdings’ Tahrir Petrochemicals Project at Ain Sokhna, Egypt, the largest petrochemical plant in Egypt. Emerson’s best practices and services helped ensure the facility’s completion on time and within budget.

About Jeff Householder Jeff Householder is the President for Emerson’s Automation Solutions business in the Middle East and Africa. Having joined the company in 1996 as part of the newly formed Systems and Solutions organization in Austin, Texas, Jeff has extensive knowledge and experience in business development for Oil & Gas in the specific areas of Flow and Systems Solutions. Assigned to the President’s role, Jeff’s current focus is on growing Emerson’s organization and footprint in the dynamic and everchanging region. Jeff subscribes to the LPMA model of leadership. LPMA stands for Leadership Promoting Motivation and Achievement. In this model, emphasis is placed on clarity of role, focused mission and freedom to achieve in methods matched to the employee. This is Jeff’s second assignment in Dubai. The first role lasted four years, wherein he was responsible for the Systems and Solutions businesses. In his current role as President of the MEA World Area for Emerson, he is expected to be in Dubai for the next 3-5 years. Engineers Find a Way to Make Coffee as Replacement to Diesel Fuel It will soon be used in buses around London. Coffee is typically a drink that fuels our body to make us stay awake and alert. And now its grounds can be made as fuel to vehicles. Clean technology company Bio-bean has discovered a way on how to convert used coffee beans as replacement to diesel fuel. It partnered with Shell and Argent Energy to create the new biofuel which is partly coffee oil.
London is among the first cities in the world to explore alternative fuels in its city buses. A transport group said that it has been turning to biofuels to curb carbon emissions.
“It’s a great example of what can be done when we start to reimagine waste as an untapped resource,” bio-bean founder Arthur Kay said.
Bio-bean is a hundred percent behind this initiative, even when according to them there is “no formal agreement” yet to continue using its coffee oil in London.
What’s amazing about the technology is the process of making the biofuel. After the used coffee grounds are collected from cafes, restaurants and factories, they are processed in a recycling facility and ends with a byproduct which is the coffee oil. This is then blended with other fats and oils to create a 20 per cent bio component, later mixed with mineral diesel to create a B20 biofuel.
The company said on its Instagram page, “Biofuels are a smart use of waste and reduce CO2 emissions — and could provide a way to power our cities cleanly in the future.”
The final product can be used in diesel buses without modification, something that has never been done before. “Spent coffee grounds are highly calorific and contain valuable compounds, making them an ideal feedstock from which to produce clean fuels,” the company noted in its website. So far, Bio-bean has produced 6,000 liters of 28
coffee oil for the pilot project with London’s transportation authority. That amount of biofuel is enough to help power the equivalent of one city bus for a year.

An Accidental Discovery Has Led to a Safer, More Sustainable Way of Moving Oil Other than the pipelines, that is.
While researching ways to upgrade bitumen, Ian Gates accidentally found a way to degrade it. And through this, the engineer from Calgary in Canada found that this could pave a way for a much safer way to transport oil. His discovery allows bitumen to be more viscous. Eventually, he developed a process which envelopes the oil in self-sealing pellets, with a liquid core and super-viscous skin, making them much easier to transport. This means that oil can no longer pass through pipelines and just be delivered through trains. This is a cheaper, less risk of environmental harm, and more sustainable way to get oil to markets according to a release by the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineer, where Gates works as a professor. 30

“We’ve taken heavy oil, or bitumen, either one, and we’ve discovered a process to convert them rapidly and reproducibly into pellets,” Gates told CBC News. “With this, we can put it in a standard rail car. It can go to any port where a rail car goes, which is an immense number of them, to get product out from North America.” He told the Calgary Eyeopener that while pipelines have their roles, he believes that the process he and his team discovered will not replace pipelines. “This just offers one more mode of transport. But certainly you could see it displacing some of the heated railcars,” he said.
The technology that they developed has been advanced to making pellets into various sizes right at the wellhead. If the concern is the energy used, it isn’t really an issue: about the same amount is used to add diluent to the bitumen to liquefy it for shipping via pipelines. “Think Advil. You have the chemical material … we’re then exposing that material, on the outside, to a set of heat, pressure conditions, that then yield a asphaltine-rich coating. So, really just a coating that bounds the inner material,” he explained. Transporting by pellets and by pipelines both has environmental risks. The former with leaks in the pipes which are often difficult to correct, and the latter by rail accidents which could cause oil spills in the seas. Gates already has an answer to this. “[The pellets] are nice and hardy. If you put them in water, they’ll sit like that for a very long time,” Gates said, adding that the
pellets are also buoyant thanks to the gas bubble injected inside each pellet. “It’s a safe product for transport,” he assured. When it comes to cost, pipelines are still much cheaper but only once they are installed. But then again that is a major investment. The researchers behind this accidental discovery are planning to make this a viable choice when transporting oil. According to Stace Willis, vice-president of energy at the University of Calgary’s Innovate Calgary, the technology is already attracting interest from members of the oil industry. “We were able [to] connect with potential industry partners and customers who might help advance the technology to a field trial, and ultimately, a full scale solution,” he said.

Are you well known for being able to deliver a presentation well in class? Try writing all your skills down and summarize them at the beginning of your resume, or after the education section.
Academic Projects Every engineering student has experienced toiling over loads of projects. These are important and should definitely be included in your resume. If you have any other side projects that you’ve done outside school that you feel gave you the skills to perform the job you’re applying for well, then add them. You can present this well in your resume under a “Projects” section. Here, you will write about your project the same way you
would for work experiences. Examples of these could be volunteering at a local charity, event organizing, or even commissioned projects.
A Good and Specific Cover Letter What makes a good and specific cover letter? Its contents are brief, yet complete and gives you a strong presence in a positive way. Put all your writing skills into this one, have it read twice or thrice by people you trust. Find a way to connect your passions and life experiences with the company, then explain how this will keep you enthusiastically on your feet once you are hired. Research the role Say you are a civil engineer wanting to explore the renewable energy sector. While they are slightly related, the cores and scope of the two are different. The best thing to do to keep up is to research the role and study what it takes to get into the business. When you do not have credentials, at least be knowledgeable about your new field of
interest. Dig deep into the job description, ask your friends who work in that sector, and pay attention to the nature of the job.
Update your resume Because you are going to apply for jobs in your new field, you have to make your resume appear that you are fit for your new roles. While you might have difficulty on the technical areas, your soft skills and other engineering skills will be handy as those are transferrable. Relate your previous jobs to the new one as much as possible by mentioning the appropriate experiences that you had in your resume.
The hiring manager needs to be convinced that someone like you, a newbie to the field, is a worthy hire. He or she must never think that you are making a career shift. Use whatever you have researched and studied to your advantage while in this stage.
Be confident It pays to be sure about your decision of changing careers from being an engineer. Each step of the way you must have the trust in yourself that you will succeed in this endeavor. If you do not have that, not one employer will be interested in you. Fake it until you make it!

Waste Plastics Are Now Being Used to Build Longer-Lasting, Stronger Roads According to the startup, the roads that it lay are as much as 60 percent stronger than regular asphalt roads and last around 10 times longer, while being less prone to getting potholes. Conventionally, there are only two materials used to build our roads: asphalt and concrete. But one startup from Scotland is proposing something else as a new component: waste plastic.

MacRebur, a startup put up by engineer Toby McCartney, wants to use recycled plastic instead of oil in creating roads. Bitumen, a material usually extracted from oil which acts as the binding agent, can be replaced with plastic pellets, or what the startup calls as MR6 pellets.
This was proven to be true as MacRebur’s plastic roads have been built in McCartney’s own driveway and in the county of Cumbria in the United Kingdom.
These plastic pellets are essentially the plastic trash that we discard and supposed to go to landfills. They act as the binder, mixed with the usual rocks and a tad bit of bitumen to build the plastic roads. Manufacturing it at the asphalt plant is actually the same “as mixing the conventional way with additions into a bitumen product,” as said by a plant worker. Meaning this setup does not need special equipment.

McCartney’s solution hits three birds with one stone: it seeks to fix the poor road quality globally; it provides an alternative to the use of fossil fuels in road building; and it makes use of the waste plastics, clearing the landfills. The idea hit McCartney when his daughter’s teacher asked the class what lives in the ocean, and his daughter got to say plastics. It was a harsh reality that the engineer did not want to perpetuate, so he did not sit it through. Reinforcing that idea was McCartney’s experience in India where locals would fix holes in the road by putting waste plastic into the holes and then burning it.

With zero work experience, fresh engineering graduates are confused as to what the determining factor really is to be employed. Upon graduating in engineering school, perhaps your greatest worry is how you will be able to land a job. You think that it is difficult to find 40

experiences outside of academics that matter to them: Internships, jobs, volunteering, and extracurricular activities. “When employers do hire from college, the evidence suggests that academic skills are not their primary concern,” says Peter Cappelli, a Wharton professor and the author of a new paper on job skills. “Work experience is the crucial attribute that employers want even for students who have yet to work full-time.” Especially for fresh engineers, it pays to have exposure to companies as early as college through on-the-job trainings and work sidelines. While this is optional for some, lucky are those who have curriculums making internships compulsory because that is what employers want the most. The Chronicle of Higher Education tallied the relative importance of attributes in evaluating graduates for hire. Internships lead with 23 points from a scale of 0 to 100, 21 points for employment during college, 12 points for volunteer experience, and 10 for extracurricular activities. All these are experience-based attributes. Meanwhile, academic attributes include college major with only 13 points, relevance of coursework and college GPA both with 8, and college reputation with 5. This just proves that your GPA will not matter that much after graduation. What does this mean for engineering students? And for you as a job seeker?

It’s Possible: The Extraction of Oil Doesn’t Have to Emit Carbon While fossil fuels provide for the world’s demands in oil and gas, its greatest issue is that it is not exactly environmentally friendly – much of the carbon emissions that reach the atmosphere, causing global warming, come from the drilling deep into the Earth.
breakthrough essentially transforms the raw materials into methanol, gasoline, and other useful products. On another note, it also lowers the capital costs in the production of synthesis, or syngas, by about 50% over the traditional technology.
Now we reached to an almost irreversible point that required the world’s governments to act, and that is through the Paris Accord.
The engineers say they have developed processes that “economically convert fossil fuels and biomass into useful products including electricity without emitting carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.”
Scientists and engineers around the world have roles to portray. Now, those from Ohio State University came up with a novel research as their contribution. And it’s significant once scaled. What they were able to develop is a process that can use coal, shale gas, and biomass while consuming carbon dioxide. No more carbon emissions, and instead the process eats the harmful gas. Published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science, their scientific

Not only that, according to their press release, the technology consumes all the carbon dioxide it produces plus additional carbon dioxide from an outside source, that is, under certain conditions. Two papers were published. The first one describes a process to convert shale gas, as well as coal and biomass, into methanol or gasoline while consuming CO2 that is produced in the reaction.
The second one gives details on extending the lifetime of particles used in their conversion process, so that the technology — called chemical looping — can become commercially viable. Chemical looping uses metal oxide particles in high-pressure reactors to “burn” fossil fuels and biomass without the presence of oxygen in the air. The metal oxide provides the oxygen for the reaction. The researchers claim that their technology can act as a stopgap technology that can provide clean electricity while renewable energies are yet to become widely available and affordable. Leader of the research, Liang-Shih Fan of OSU, said, “Renewables are the future. We need a bridge that allows us to create clean energy until we get there — something affordable we can use for the next 30 years or more, while wind and solar power become the prevailing technologies.” Five years ago, Fan and his team worked on a chemical looping technology that captured 99 percent of the CO2 produced in the combustion of coal. However, their process only allowed eight days for the iron oxide particles to be useful. That was not the case in their new research, as their technology improved to keep the process going for over eight months, at least under laboratory conditions. “The particle itself is a vessel, and it’s carrying the oxygen back and forth in this process, and it eventually falls apart,” said Andrew Tong, one of the engineers in the team. Like a truck transporting goods on a highway, eventually it’s going to undergo some wear and tear. And we’re saying we devised a particle that can make the trip 3,000 times in the lab and still maintain its integrity,” he added. For now, the engineers are looking for partners in the industry to further develop the breakthrough technology.

SNC-Lavalin Signs Exclusive Agreement with Florexx International Investments LLC to Deliver Advanced Topping Refinery in the UAE SNC-Lavalin (TSX:SNC) has signed an exclusive agreement with Florexx International Investments LLC for the extended basic engineering and subsequent design and delivery of an Advanced Topping Refinery in the UAE. Under the exclusive agreement, SNC-Lavalin will carry out the initial basic engineering, master planning, process technology evaluation and selection to support project financial investment decision approvals, expected in Q3 2018. Once the project proceeds to the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) phase, SNC-Lavalin will carry out the complete design and delivery of the refinery, working alongside Emirati contractors to maximize in-country value. “This project is an important addition to the work that we do in the UAE, further boosting 48

Advanced Topping Refineries use distillation columns to separate crude oil into different petroleum products, including naphtha, diesel, kerosene and fuel. The Inside Battery Limits (ISBL) scope of the agreement between SNCLavalin and Florexx includes construction of a 100,000 barrel per day (BPD) capacity refinery complemented by non-process technical and non-technical buildings and support infrastructure.
