REFURBISHMENT AND RE-DEVELOPMENT OF GALILEI MEUCCI INSTITUTE, FLORENCE The theme of the project is the re-design of the Commercial Technical Institute and the Industrial Technical Institute of Scandicci (FI), in order to accomodate around 1,400 students and all the necessary facilities. The project is divided into five buildings, each of them with different volume, according to the services hierarchy. On the street front, there is the entrance with the amministrative offices, the offices and the auditorium, the laboratories on the right and the gym on the left, which can also be available to others during off school hours. Finally, the classrooms are located in the L-shaped building. The complex is joined by a large internal courtyard, partly covered, to allow students and professors to spend time outdoors even during rainy days. From a social point of view, this will also guarantee a social space where students can relax and talk. The goal of the design isn’t just “how spaces communicate with each other”, but their differentiation based on light and how it shapes them. The study of full-empty and light-shadow has been the subject of this laboratory.

BIO-CENTER CAMPUS, GALAPAGOS The project involves the design of a residential campus for scientists on Isabella Island, Galapagos. The campus will accomodate common areas, offices and canteen (circular building) and several dwelllings, connected to each other via pedestrian walkways. These are raised above the ground to limit the impact with the island’s delicate ecosystem. Two large canopies cover the dwellings and divide them according to their types (three-room apartments facing the street, two-room apartments facing the sea). The sinuous shape, reminiscent of the seahorse that inhabits this part of the ocean, was modeled to respect the mangroves and, at the same time to admired them from different points of view. A careful and extensive research has been carried out on bio-architecture and the various options available on the market, to choose the most suitable structural technologies and systems for this enviroment and to guarantee the costeffectiveness of these buildings. The entire complex, in fact, was designed to be self-sufficient in terms of energy and with an ecosustainable wooden and steel structure.

NEW URBAN PLAN IN HACKNEY WICK AND FISH ISLAND, LONDON The idea to develop a new urban plan in Hackney Wick and Fish Island area was born from the need to connect with the nearby Olympic village, built in 2012. At first, the buildings were analyzed, thanks also to a direct survey, subsequently a “SWOT analysis was carried out to identify the objectives to be achieved. During the masterplan phase, the most important road and pedestrian axes and the functions of each portion of the neighborhood were defined. No zoning was created, but mixed uses were assigned to each area, so as to have safe streets and neighborhoods at all times of the day. Existing green spaces, bus and train stops have been placed to carefully relate to each other including residential areas, with the aim to create short walking distance routes. In particular, the empty and crumbling buildings have been identified, so that they can be recovered and reused for the most important intended use.

HACKNEY WICK LIBRARY, LONDON The library is located along the river path, on a large square, where the neighborhood’s pedestrian paths (green lines) converge. Thanks to ramps and steps it is possible to overcome the difference in height between the river and the square, as if this extended up to the water level. The need to create a place to initiate a social interaction between people of different nationalities led to library design. In addition to giving a service to all citizens, it is designed as a social hub, where people meet and get to know the traditions and ways of living of others, starting a social amalgamation, which is currently non-existent in the neighborhood. From a functional point of view, at the ground floor there is a cafeteria overlooking the river, classrooms for private lessons and part of the library. This level is entirely in glass and steel, allowing an almost total view of the surrounding area. The facade is screened by a perforated corten sheet, shading direct light, there are also rooflights for zenithal light. In addition to the library, there is a large computer room, which can also be used as a language course class. Axonometric exploded view

THE NEW “TORRE DI BERTA”, SANSEPOLCRO (AR) The project involves the preparation of a new underground museum hosting the painting “The Baptism of Christ” by Piero della Francesca and the reconstruction of the ancient “Torre di Berta”, symbol of the village of Sansepolcro, destroyed in 1944 during a German bombing. The new flooring is marked by horizontal and vertical travertine bands, highlighting the tower and the museum entrance. The latter is placed in a new glazed architecture full of light. Its transparency makes it almost chameleonic in the square. From here, through the stairs it’s possible to go down to the underground floor bathed in an ethereal light, where the smooth gray stone of the floor is in contrast with the rough brick of the tower, visible in all its height through the skylight on the ceiling. A long corridor leads to the painting room, characterized by strong materials in contrast with the light ones, such as stone and opaque glass. Once admired the painting, a corridor allows access to the tower. In all its height, it is equipped with loopholes from which light enters, but not allowing the outwards view; until reached the top, where a 360° view of the panorama opens up to the visitor.

STRATEGIC BUILDING IN PONTICINO (AR) Functional and structural adjustment project The theme of this study concerns the structural and functional adjustment project of a building for strategic use at Ponticino, a hamlet of Laterina in the province of Arezzo. The lead motivation to tackle this kind of topic was given by the possibility of applying the course of study to a real case and also to have the experience to collaborate with a public body. The goal was to carry out a project that would bring the building to comply with the order of the President of the Council of Ministers no. 3274 of 20 March 2003, which establishes that all strategic buildings must be able to operate after an earthquake, in order to guarantee the performance of the Civil Protection functions. The building is marked as strategic because it contains, among the various uses, also a Carabinieri barracks, which must guarantee immediate intervention in the event of a natural disaster. Before drafting the structural and functional adjustment project, the methodological path indicated in the technical regulations for the study of existing buildings was implemented. Based on these procedures, the study began with a “historical documentary analysis”, in order to find a sufficiently complete documentation on the building history; subsequently a careful “geometric-architectural survey” was carried out with the analysis of the materials and their degradation. Then, to obtain a mechanical characterization of the materials and address an analysis of the nodes and connections, as well as a picture of the crack state with the diagnosis of instabilities, it was necessary to carry out a “geometrical-structural survey”. The level of knowledge and the relative confidence factor of the structure were then defined; furthermore, in order to highlight the real behavior of the structure on the basis of the knowledge achieved, the creation of the “structural 3D model” was necessary, so as to be able to carry out the appropriate static and seismic checks. A second model was therefore modeled for the verification of the energy class.

CONCLUSIONS On the basis of the critical issues encountered in the interpretation of the results obtained from the verifications, the design of improvement interventions was carried out at structural, energy and functional levels. This allows the building to comply with the legal regulations governing public buildings and, as in this case, strategic buildings.

40 m MOTOR YACHT _ CYGNUS, Crisium Yacht Design, Motor Yachts Workshop This semi-displacement yacht comes with plenty of power, courtesy of two Caterpillar C32 Acert engines, IMO II/ EPA Tier 3 compliant. It will have a maximum speed of 15.5 knots and a range of 3,000 nautical at a cruising speed of 11.75 knots. All this with full comfort provided by the ABT-Trac stabilisers and a night generator to assure everyone has a pleasant rest while on board. The 40-meter yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests in five spacious cabins, including a full-beam master suite with private terrace, and 6 crew members. Cygnus was created by the studio Crisium: a design and engineering focused team that, as the names suggests, looked to the moon and stars for inspiration. With members of the studio spread across the northern hemisphere; Cygnus combines ground-breaking Italian design and Indian innovation with cutting edge British and Spanish engineering. The yacht challenges convention. How? By using a spatial arrangement that puts family first. Its features bring the fun back to the yachting experience. This is partnered with an elegant and timeless aesthetic. Could this be the new template for superyachts of the future? Let’s begin our tour. Crisium team stated that, with the exterior design, the brief was to create a bold but graceful concept. Being actually inspired by some simple geometrical Kandinsky sketches of a dancer; the combination of curved and straight lines really exaggerates these two ideas. The paint work follows the lines of the hull and superstructure, enhancing the dynamic form. The contrasting colour palette also comes into effect; one could argue that the white and black are a physical embodiment of grace and boldness. This yacht leaps out of the water. Stepping onto the yacht the first thing we notice is a spacious deck and seating area - a perfect shaded spot to enjoy a family breakfast. From here we move through a set of sliding semi-circular doors. A beautiful and contemporary twist on a yacht design classic, that breathes light and space into the interior. Not that it needs it. The saloon, that consists of a dining area, lounge and bar, already has floor to ceiling windows on each side. In this comfortable and informal space, you truly feel like you are at home in the middle of the ocean. A cascading waterfall, sweeping staircase and sunken seating area staggers what could be an intimidating space. The team believes this is what feng shui is about. The main deck also houses a galley and spacious day head. The galley is a very comfortable size and offers flexibility in use. With separate crew and guest entrances, these facilities’ functions are whatever you wish to make of them. Moving on and down to the lower deck, via the central spiral staircase, we arrive at the guest lounge.

Be careful inviting family and friends onto this yacht, as they could happily stay in this space and their adjacent cabins for the duration of the trip. A beautiful ocean view partnered with a serviced bar and lounge area: what else could you need? And that’s just the beginning. These guest cabins throw away the rule book, converting the large space into just two of them. No more horribly cramped spaces below deck. Get the VIP service you deserve with a large cabin, adjoining walk-in wardrobe and luxury en-suite, inspired by artist Danny Lane. However, the guest suite is only one example of beauty. Everywhere we look on Cygnus, whether it’s the colours, materials or finishes, they are breath taking. The majority of this project is based around this idea of a nest - a home away from home. In the client’s case, the native home is Switzerland, so CMF choices were based on an idyllic scene of a cosy home, nestled in the snowy mountains. The concept was executed by juxtaposing warm and cool colours, materials and finishes. If we go back to the main deck and towards the bow, this is where the fun really begins. On the starboard side there is an art studio, office and library. This space is flexible, utilising rotating bookcases and seating. Make it whatever you want. Forward of this space is the home cinema and star gazing room. Flexibility is accomplished through the use of a giant camera-style aperture in the ceiling. When closed, it provides the darkness of a movie theatre, but once opened, the light of a million stars will flood the room. The arrangement of the upper deck is one of a kind. Cygnus goes against the norm and places the master cabin on this deck, alongside two VIP cabins. Crisium states that this radical arrangement is to “bring the family together”, and it makes perfect sense. The concept of Kandinsky sketches is further applied in the exterior spaces (flybridge and bow seating area). Unavoidable straight lines from the decking and superstructure are broken up by organically curved seating and lounging areas. There is a beautiful flow to the seating around the aperture opening, in the bow and upstairs on the fly deck. On the flybridge, there is another stargazing point, consisting of a telescope mounted on a gyroscopic hexapod stabilisation platform. The amenities offered are not only limited to on deck. Closer to the water there is a modest beach club with head facilities that opens onto the swim platform. Also featured is garage that can store a tender, two jet skis, as well as a range of storage space for inflatables and other toys. Cygnus is not a cash splash project; it is a well thought out and tailored piece of design. Ideas of home and family are unavoidable, and it would serve as the perfect vessel for families and close friends who are looking to spend more of their time on the water.

24 m FAST CRUISER CATAMARAN _ URAGANO, Arktos Team, Sailingboats Workshop Arktos Team is composed of four people from different nationalities and academic backgrounds: Angelopoulos Ioannis Andreas, 23 years old, Greek, Naval Engineer; Bagagiolo Nicolò, 25 years old, Italian, Architect; Chaves Barbosa Gustavo, 34 years old, Brasilian, Product Designer; Cecchi Ginevra, 26 years old, Italian, Architect. Despite different backgrounds, all the members of the group liked the idea of developing a catamaran, because besides being versatile and offering a lot of space on board, it is a great challenge of technical and style design. Normally, catamarans of 24m range are excellent cruising boats, but they leave a little to be desired in terms of style, mainly because of the proportions. The challenge was to combine the good performances and stability of a catamaran with clean lines, contemporary style and striking aspects. The hypothetical client is a young couple, who has the desire to go around the world producing content for a documentary. Therefore, they will spend most of their time alone, but eventually they will receive visits from producers or friends at the stops. Based on this, Arktos Team choose to give to the catamaran profile a minimal and sporty design with strong lines, respecting the proportions dictated by the golden ratio. In the stern, the seats, the command post and the support for the pulleys are separated pieces, but at the same time, they were designed to give continuity and lightness, as if they were floating. The atypical curved stairs follow the inner part of the hull and they have a connection in the center of the rear view with the support for the pulleys, giving a great sportiness to the stern. Carrying on, the side passage along the superstructure has two steps that, seen from above, resemble air outlets for racing cars while the nozzles of formula 1 cars from the 2000s inspired the support of the exterior wheel and the anchor in bow. The superstructure is mostly glazed and is divided into three main parts. The central one is was thought to help in the aerodynamic issue that is why it is very inclined. The two lateral ends advance over the deck, create more internal space and, at the same time, an elegant and sporty look at the exterior. Embedded in the glass area of the bow, there are two couches, perfect for resting and enjoying the sea breeze. The glazed part is strictly joined with the roof, in fact they are the extension of each other. The design of the roof and superstructure is harmoniously connected with the unevenness of the deck and with the lines of the hull, giving the sensation of movement even when the boat is berthed.

To highlight the lines of the catamaran, the choice of the material was fundamental. She is in shades of gray, while the cables, rudders, ballast and keel are orange, giving a touch of color and sportiness. For the stern floor, especially near the main hall, a teak floor was chosen to create a warm atmosphere. The interior design follows the same ideas. The main hall has elements of style in the furniture that perfectly match the external design, making the interior an extension of the exterior. The hall is a spacious fully glazed open space, a very useful characteristic when the boat is sailed by the internal command, because it gives ample visibility of the cables and sails. In addition, it provides a pleasant protected room totally connected to the outside of the boat and the environment. The command post is in the center, with an infinite panel that has a dark acrylic surface that covers all the equipment, markers and control screens. They are only visible when they are in use, giving a panel with a simple, sophisticated and modern design. The mast crosses the main hall and is covered with a transparent and water-resistant acrylic, but it gives vision and access to all the cables that pass around the mast. This solution creates an effect that besides being interesting from the point of view of style, it is also extremely functional in case of any maintenance or exchange of cables or accessories. On the port side, there is a bar and a sofa as a rest and relaxation area, and on the starboard side, the chart table and another sofa to receive guests. In the center of the main hall there is a kitchen divided into two modules and a table with six seats. Both the table and the kitchen can slide on rails to the outside area, together or separately. The kitchen systems are plug and play, so food can be prepared and served either inside or outside the boat, which makes this activity extremely flexible. As our client is a couple who will spend most of their time alone, nothing is more fair than reserving one of the hulls for the master suite. This suite has a Jacuzzi inside the room as well as a complete private bathroom and a lot of comforts. In the other hull there are two cabins and two bathrooms, one cabin having a private bathroom and the other sharing the bathroom with the guests. For a total of six beds. The Boat was designed taking into account efficiency and speed, so we opted for narrower hulls, which help in performance numbers. With a sail area of 343 mq she can offer sailing to racing performance levels and can travel on sails with winds up to 7 Beaufort. Moreover, if the owner doesn’t wish to sail but travel long distances under engine power only, Uragano offers a range of over 3000 nautical miles at 9.5 knots cruising speed and 1100 nautical miles at 12 knots of speed. With an efficient engineering design, lightweight materials such as carbon fiber and a contemporary and modern design, the Catamaran Uragano project coherently combines the engineering proposal with the design.
