Mean while the developed countries live in what Marc Augé describes as “surmodernité”, Brazil as other countries are entering in modernity. Following the path of others their way of life is changing and industrialization is advancing. Nordeste (north east), where this photos were taken, is one of the poorest regions of Brazil. With its agriculture based economy, sugar and cocoa mostly, and a huge problem of illiteracy, this region is trying to fill the gap with the rest of Brazil. In the last few years the São Francisco river’s valley have seen since 1997 a non stop increasing in production of fruit for export. Petrolina (Pernambuco) and Juazeiro (Bahia) became the first producers of fruits for export in Brazil. Oil is being exploited on the Bahia’s coasts and tourism is growing fast. Modernity is nearly there and the changes can be felt.
