profile

My interest in architecture and arts date back to my preparatory studies for entering the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Rome La Sapienza from where i graduated in 2005 with grade 110/110. In October 2006 i received my architect’s professional qualification in Cyprus after a year’s practical exercise of the profession while in May 2011 i completed my Masters in Sustainable Architecture in the Mediterranean Cities at the University of Florence with scholarship from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Some months later, i became a qualified Energy Assessor for Residential Buildings in Cyprus after passing the relevant examination. Since 2005, I have worked on various projects types but my main interests can be summed up in two main sectors: - bioclimatic architecture, sustainability, energy and resources saving - architecture of peace, divided cities, contested spaces, architecture and (civil) society, public and private relations The conflict and the multi-ethnic character of Cyprus, my studies, my multi-disciplinary interests and linguistic capacities as well as my sociable and versatile character have offered me the chance to travel a lot and get into contact with different contexts and cultures and develop a cosmopolitan professional profile with particular organisational and mediation skills, capable of operating efficiently both in group or individually.

Architectural Competition for the new offices of KYPE (National Press Agent) Nicosia, Cyprus apr 2010 - sep 2010 in collaboration with: Alexis Papadopoulos The project plot was located in an area of undefined urban character. A rational form is subject to a subtraction procedure which emphasises the entrance and creates covered areas at ground floor and allows light and wind to penetrate deeply the internal. The building is equipped with metal cladding of perforated metal sheet offering light dimming and contributing to cooling energy saving. It also offers a third dimension to the façade but most of all it introduces a new relation between interior and exterior as its targeted positioning partially in front of the transparent façade surfaces creates an endless ‘framing procedure’. During the evening hours, the whole relation between light and shades is inverted and the façade transforms into a living object as the building operates constantly 24/7.

Architectural Competition for the New Municipal Market and multi-level parking of Larnaca Municipality Nicosia, Cyprus dec 2010 - apr 2011 with: MDU Architetti/collaborators The proposal aims to transform this really unique area of the town’s historic centre into an urban attraction pole where the role and use of public spaces and pedestrian areas are invested with the notion of slowness are emphasized. The 3 elements: market, multilevel parking and open air market are interwoven in a way that the historic urban fabric is respected and enhanced through the usage of traditional elements such as the ‘stoa’ (covered urban passage mainly commercial), urban axis and flows and cadastral data used to re-design open air public spaces. The bulky parking structure is modelled in way to reduce its visibility and impact on the historic fabric while the market building is inspired from the traditional market typology of Cyprus.

Architectural Competition For The Re-design Of The Old GSP Area Nicosia, Cyprus jun 2011 - oct 2011 with: MDU Architetti/collaborators The concept relates to the GSP area, a site in continuous evolution: from an ancient flourishing copper settlement to the abandoned GSP stadium. As a leaf of copper lays onto the existing stadium tier, it shapes accordingly creating an urban central square, where the relation between the spectacle and the spectator becomes predominant. Interacting with the urban reality of the surroundings, the leaf obtains a contextualised shape clearly influenced by two main elements: the urban pedestrian flows and the its inseparable relation to the new theatre. As a result, on the directions of the pedestrian flows, a series of green areas constitute the entrances to the central multi-functional square equipped with colour changing water jets and linear LED along the steps.

Architectural Competition (Phases A and B) for the redesign of fishing shelter and river Liopetri, Cyprus jan 2011 - dec 2011 with: MDU Architetti, ECO INGEGNO and IRIS/ collaborators

awarded commendation The proposal aimed to encourage respect and protection of this unique location through the enhancement of a sustainable lifestyle and the return to the lost harmonic symbiosis between man and nature. The proposed park, managed by a joint venture of farmers and fishermen, aimed to set the basis for the promotion of a lacking ecotouristic model. The few requested constructions (4 buildings and a bridge), were designed with organic materials and constituted exclusively reversible intervention. Their smooth forms were inspired from the local natural landscape.

Architectural competition for the new offices of the Central Co-operative Bank Nicosia, Cyprus apr 2012 - jun 2012 with: MDU Architetti/collaborators The concept originates from the humancentric philosophy and the fundamental principles of the Cyprus Co-operative Bank: humanity and society are placed in the centre creating the nucleus of the project surrounded, protected and embraced. The Co-op Bank was born right out from the society and has based its growth on the joint efforts of single units who manage to prosper by working together and by supporting each other within the opportunities offered by the co-op movement. This principle is transformed into a structural grid which forms a recognisable and compact building founded on solid ground.

individual - society - cooperation

the structure of the co-operative bank consists of people supporting one another

habitat, housing and services Tiburtina, Rome, Italy sep 2003 - jun 2004 Msc in architecture: final year project of 5 year course The main urban plan conception was based on the urban flows that would be created between the university premises and the brand new Tiburtina Station once the latter would come to completion. On an architectural level a serious of bioclimatic principles were used to reduce energy consumption in the whole complex consisting in: student accommodation halls (the ones presented in detail), an auditorium, residential towers and a commercial area in each of the two project blocks.

No-man’s land of nicosia: Rehabilitation of the traces of a laceration Nicosia, Cyprus jan 2005 - jun 2005 Msc in architecture: thesis project of 5 year course The thesis investigated initially various approaches for future scenarios of rehabilitation of the unhabited and inaccessible buffer zone of Nicosia. A deep historical analysis and overview of similar contexts was conducted. The results suggested that neither a romantic conservative restoration approach nor a drastic Berlinese ‘tabula rasa’ intervention model was the case for sawing up the lacerated urban fabric of the capital. After 40 years of division the two town sectors had strongly adjusted to the presence of the buffer zone ...

The scar is too deep to be cancelled. The two sides can come together but will never truly touch each other (at least at the beginning). The project tranforms the buffer zone into a de-nationalised monument inspired form the uncantainable magic and dynamism of the moment, that energetically loaded instant just before contact occurs. The ‘reconciliation garden’ is a place where the madness of war is exposed to visitors through various examples along their catharsis paths....

re-linking famagusta the new waterfront, touristic and commercial ports Famagusta, Cyprus jan 2011 - jun 2011 thesis project The project tries to relink the divided town of Famagusta not so much with its old inaccessible subirbs but with its abandoned marine areas aiming to re-establish the vivid and vital relation which every coastal (mainly a port city) inevitably develops with the surrounding water. A continuous equipped, activity full green belt and enjoyable waterfront is proposed between the town and the sea embracing the new ports, the marina, the walled town passing by the new naval station building which interacts endlessly with water and sand as the town has always done since its foundation...

LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA- ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE, 2008 BEACH IS NOT PATHETIC Alexis Papadopoulos, Christos Georgiou & Giorgos Psaltis Who ever said that the cost must be the limit of a coastal town? Why should the beach be the element, the border that divides the land from the water? Why can’t the urban tissue discover its own marine aspect? Who ever said that the beach has to be characterised only by certain uses? Why do we always have the same stereotypical equipment which defines the use of the beach and vice versa? Could the dull veranda of a coastal hotel find itself where it really belongs? Why should the beach always be identified as passive and why not be considered as the per excellence public urban space of life, social gathering and interaction, all year round; a contemporary multi-perspective square that offers its users the chance to revel and relax, overturning the current situation, without losing cohesion with the adjacent site.
