2 UNIVERSITY PROJECT NAME: TOi LOCATION: Turin TYPOLOGY: Office Year: 2015

TOi ABSTRACT

The project is an office building situated in the city center of Turin between Sacchi Street and Somellier’s overpass. The building is located in an ex railways zone transformed into a residential and commercial area with a huge park from a previously masterplan. The construction has 10.000 mq, four level and an “L” form in order to follow the regular geometry of the city and to ensure the maximum solar gain. The offices and the related work spaces are located in the three upper floors. The regular structure has been studied in order to guarantee a great flexibility of the interior spaces so that more than one company can rent them. On the top floor there are a restaurant, overlooking the park, and a museum space, for public and private exhibitions. The central area between the two office blocks is a portal which allows to pa ss from the city’s noise to the park’s quiet. The facade, located in the southwest quadrant, is made up by a curtain wall. Its envelop allows the light passage in winter and prevents the interiors overheating during summertime. The PV integration produces the electricity by renewable sources. The facade towards the park is made up by a ventilated façade which limits the thermal losses and by a water tanks system which collects rainwater for fire system. Steel (for the structure) and wood (vertical and horizontal partition) are the main material used in the project. The Embodied Energy has been respected by Minergie_A certification (Swiss procedure).

COMPETITION (young architect competition) NAME: F.I.C.O. LOCATION: Bologna TYPOLOGY: Spa Year: 2015

F.I.C.O. ABSTRACT

The project involves the construction of a Wellness center through the renewal of an old manufacturing factory. The site is located in Lazzari Street in Bologna suburbs (Italy). The design concept has been conceived in order to ensure the maximum solar gain and to optimize the available spaces in the old factory. The building was raised of three meters high to realize all the functional spaces required by the client. The water zone (1000 mq) and Spa (600 mq) were placed in the large space of the shed, while the reception, bar, shop, and technical spaces were located in the ex offices of the factory. Each external facade was conceived according to the solar orientation. The south-west facade, characterized by a large window, allows a good lighting during the day with electricity saving. Vertical and horizontal shadows regulate the solar radiation: in summer they block the solar radiation avoiding the overheating of the interior, while in winter they allow a correct lighting. The other facades are ventilated to limit thermal losses. The facade’s cladding is formed by squared wooden strips modules which are able to rotate through the wind’s blow. The result is a dynamic facade that lightens the building’s heaviness. The reinforcement of the structures and all the finishing were designed in wood or natural materials to reduce the Embodied Energy (primary energy content).

COMPETITION (start for talent) NAME: ARTIST’s House LOCATION: Berlin TYPOLOGY: Residence Year: 2015

ARTIST’s House ABSTRACT

The project site, in the Kreuzberg district, shows different aspects: on one side the natural skyline formed by the river Spree and a rich urban vegetation, while on the other one the subway which creates a sharp contrast with the roads regularity. This contrast gives rise to a triangular lot which will become the basis for the first project lines design. The building is in fact composed of three triangular shape sleeves, each of which represents one of the three most important arts: music, painting and sculpture. The volumes overlap makes the building permeable as it creates gaps through which people can freely enter or exit the courtyard, a meeting and artists’ work place. The theme of social participation is represented by the sleeves intertwine where each sleeve seems independent but it is related to the others. The interior layout consists of three entrances corresponding to the three triangle vertices, a balcony which runs along the inner side and the apartments which are located on two floors (duplex). In order to meet various requirements, two different flats sizes were assumed: one of 80 square meters and the other 160 square meters. Thanks to these wide open spaces, the artists can live together sharing not only their artistic culture, but also the everyday life. As regards the facades, they have been conceived in different ways. The painting facade was designed as a great “white canvas” in which artists can actively participate in its implementation by painting. The music facade has a soft and curved form which represents music harmony and emotions, while the sculpture front is made with stone blocks which symbolize the rough material that the sculptor transformed into a artwork.

5 UNIVERSITY PROJECT NAME: SKYgarden LOCATION: New York TYPOLOGY: Office Year: 2013

SKYgarden ABSTRACT

This project is an office/hotel skyscraper located in Harlem, New York (United States). The site is set far from the most beautiful area of the city and it is characterized by low and crumbling buildings. The project area is well connected to road networks and public transport: it can be easily reached by the elevated subway and the overpass. The skyscraper develops up to 300 meters height on a squared plan and it ends with an inclined roof of 45° with an observatory of Central Park. The tower’s profile is designed by the perimeter of the site and it is vertically projected. The position of the plant is designed in order to have the best views of Harlem: the panorama of the Hudson River and the Riverside Park in the south-west, the Saint-Nicholas Park at north-east and Central Park from the last levels of the tower. The skyscraper’s structure is made up by a central core of reinforced concrete, containing the stairwells and elevator shaft, and by steel tubular pillars placed at the perimeter of the plant. As regards the offices, this structural configuration allows to create free plants which can be transformed into new spaces depending on the different needs. On the top floors of the skyscraper there is the “skygarden”, a green space open to the public which is a panoramic observatory of the city and a meeting place for the users of the building. The roof is made of wide glass windows and it is supported by steel wire fence. A second glazed skin was designed to the south facade in order to avoid interior overheating during summertime and to limit heat losses in winter.

6 UNIVERSITY PROJECT NAME: E tu, che bene FAI? LOCATION: Masino (To) TYPOLOGY: Museum Year: 2014

E tu, che bene FAI? ABSTRACT

Masino Castle, safeguarded building of FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano), is located on a hill in front of the long Serra morenica mountain barrier (Ivrea, Italy). It was built in the eleventh century by the prestigious family Valperga and its strategic position has allowed the control over a large territory between Ivrea and Valle d’Aosta. The current form of the castle is the result of different changes that took place over the centuries. This project involves the fifteenth century area, which is at the moment not accessible to the public. The project aim is to organize a new tour visit by giving new function to the fifteenth century spaces focusing on the south tower, the last room of the visit . The tower is composed of two levels connected by a spiral staircase. In the upper level the project concept was to promote tourism not only related to the castle, but to extend it to other safeguard building of FAI located in North of Italy. QR-code panels, containing the information relating to other FAI safeguarded buildings, were placed in a steel self-supporting and removable structure installed in order not to affect the existing building. These information are available through the use of smartphones or tablets focusing the code. The lower level of the tower is used to the historical knowledge of the castle through a time line. It runs along the curved wall of the room indicating the major historical events. The external part of Masino’s castle was lighted by strip led to indicate the fifteenth century passages not visible from the outside.

7 UNIVERSITY WORKSHOP NAME: Villa ROLANDO LOCATION: Bardonecchia (To) TYPOLOGY: Residence Year: 2014

Villa ROLANDO ABSTRACT

This workshop is a digital representation of Villa Rolando, designed by Carlo Alberto Bordogna in Bardonecchia (Turin, Italy). This project was carried out in the fifties: in that period more than 300 houses were built in this mountain town owing to construction and tourism “boom”. They are holiday houses usually made up of small apartments into four to six floors buildings, whose architectural style is essentially urban. Villa Rolando is a small summer house: its spaces are well organized in order to guarantee all comforts to the citizens who spent their free time in the mountain during the weekend. The internal rooms, designed by Bordogna, are small and confortable like typical mountain huts. It is significant the term used in the study designs: “bungalow Rolando-Bardonecchia,” which refers to the type of Bengali wooden house, a proposal of the town house easily reachable on weekends.
