Introduction The recent economic development of Asian countries has had a profound impact on the world economy, particularly in the food, material and industrial markets. China, as the largest country in Asia, is considered the most important in terms of global sustainability. Food and water issues are important not only for China but also for many other countries in the world. A rapid increase in food consumption in China may lead to drastic changes in the food market. Urbanization of Chinese cities is forcing policy makers to examine the availability of water resources. The purpose of this symposium is to develop an academic network in China to examine food and water sustainability and to link such a network with Japanese and European research groups. We invite researchers working on the development of food and water sustainability to attend the symposium. We hope the symposium contributes to the development of sustainable nourishment and human well-being in Asia. Expected keynote speakers Alexander Zehnder Shinichiro Ohgaki Li Xiubin Wang Zhishi Hiroaki Furumai Greg Morrison
