During the semester we focused on the potencial of pubblic space, interpreting three different settlements in Centovalli , a historic valley situated in Canton Ticino, Switzerland. We developped a future vision of the area, proposing a reuse of its territory, more frugal and sensitive to it’s morphological and landscape qualities. As Rogers said and Hermann Muthesius said before him ,we where asked to :“think from the spoon to the city”. In agreement with this motto, getting started, from a landscape analysis, we developped a masterplan and a project of reuse.

A Quiet Corner chatting with the pre-existence

The project proposes some small interventions which have the aim to rehabilitate an interstitial space, used nowdayas as a parking site. Restoring the pubblic use and reconnecting the square with the river, I tryed to gain a new quality for this forgotten corner. The old dry stone wall of the pre-existence is reinterpreted trough the use of concrete slabs .This expedient allows the light to penetrate trough the mass of the vernacular wall, enlighting an exposition space. Outside the concrete is used not only for a Pergola and benches, but also to determinate boundaries. In fact the treatment of the ground would like to recall the plan of an old building nowadays missing.

Masterplan Terre di Pedemonte Verscio, Tegna, Cavigliano

The founding Idea of the project is the necessity to face the demographic growth and the consuption of space of the next decades. Our masterplan considers the ipotetical evolution of population of the valley in the next 50 years. Considering that this mountain territory will become the suburban area of the next city of Locarno, its population will probabily increase rapidely. It could be supposed that the today’s population ammonting at 2500 will reach 10000 units in few years--, this will lead necessarily to a new urbanistic plan.

The project takes note of the radical changes that will occur in the next decades regarding demography and it’s consequences on the urban and sub-urban areas. The growth of population, as we all now, determins new questions. It increases the human exploitation of natural resources and ground as one of them. The answer I gave to this theme has obviously a certain element of Utopia, nevertheless it tries not to be arbitrary. The project is an infrastructure, an inhabiteted bridge thath links the historical nucleus of Cavigliano to the station and the new residential quartier. The aim is to overcome the river and to connect the two faces of the valley, leaving untouched the wood and the traditional rows of wine below. The gesture is strong and creates a fecund contrast between the suspended concrete structure and the topography of the surrounding. The typologie is quite uncommon nowadays , but an intresting historical example could be Pont Notre-Dame in Paris, by Fra Giocondo 1507, where housing and commercial function used to coexist in an original form.

“ [...] What means shade outside, that means light inside outside we look for shadow indoor we look for light When we search for shade we have to counterpose our element, we face the sun with courage. outside we wotk from light to darkness inside we work from darkness to the light seeking light and seeking darkness are not the same path! ” Geometrie und Baukunst, E. Daughters of the Sun

Light and Shadows • Artist in Residence

The building is a small Pavillion, a project of garden arhittecture for the Fondation Maeght, the famous art foundation of Saint-Paul-de-Vence in Provence. The structure has the dual nature of being at same time a shelter for an artist and a sort of plastic building that dialoges with light and shadows like a sculpture. The name of the pavillion reminds a famous Essay of the hungarian scholar of mitology Karoly Kereny. The author underlines the strict connection that exist between the brightest solar gods of the greek tradition Helios, Hyperiones ,Appollo and their counter parts, the ill-fated shadows of the mediterranean mytology. Medea, Pasifae and Circe, daughters of the sun drag us in an other world, far from the appollonian razionality. The metaphisic perfection of the massive brik volume of building is injured by wounds , which lead to an oniric kindom of shadows.

Atelier Walter Angonese Light and Shadows • Housing in Bordeaux

During the second semester we where asked to design an housing complex in Chartrons an arrondissemant of Bordeaux. The particulary of the lot choosen is his historical heritage, rappresented by a series of parallels stone walls. These 140 m long and 7 m high wals, used to be part of the tradicional Chai, the famous wineries of Bordeaux. My project tries to conftont with this preexistnece , without destroing it, but on the opposite in order to achieve a new quality trough the dialogue with the past. The light glass and metal structure, simply leans on the existent cantillevers. The coplex is made of 4 glass-houses long up to 180, These are supposed to maintain the axiality of the lot, introducing the ambiguity of a trasversal distribution, wich links the single abitation modules made of massive limestone.
