Aurora Borealis Observatory in Rovaniemi, Finland Design Competition organized by Archmedium in Spring 2012. The competition expect the design of a reception structure located in one of the most remote and cold place of the world: the Finnish Lapland. The resort is placed in a hill location close to Rovaniemi’s lake and it’s composed by several spaces like the Sauna, the restaurant, the planetarium and some bedrooms. The project forecasts some hypogeum enviroments, organized by a polar geometry, covered with glass domes, from which is it possible to admire the Northern Lights, while remaining protected from the polar cold. Those transparent igloos are supported by an external structure made by three arches of laminated wood, anchored to the ground with appropriate supports

When it was built, the house was organized with a central staircase that divides the floors into a front part of the house which catches all the light and the winds and a back part which is dark and uncomfortable. The project considers to move the staircase to the bottom of the propriety, in order to create a large living room / kitchen at the main floor. On the roof – terrace there is a new loft which is used as a studio and work environment. Moreover, the new room is connected at the bottom with the staircase and with the living room at the first floor, allowing the natural ventilation of the whole building. Cross Section

Requalification project of Piazza dell’Isolotto in Florence, Italy. Design Competition organized by the municipality of Florence in the period December 2014 – February 2015. The project, which is configured as an ensemble of few minimal gestures, consist of the edification of a covered space obtained by a sequence of cor-ten portals, which hold a glass cover and a series of wooden elements for the shading of the spaces below. The next to square is made a pedestrian area and is equipped with a new pavement. The new building in cor-ten works like a filter and enters into a relationship between the pedestrian square and the churchyard, as well as with the green spaces located nearby.

All those new ambients are going to be used in different ways: like a market area on the street under the covering, like a walking and chilling squae on the opposite side, and as environment equipped for the restoration (thanks to the tables and the kiosks which remain open also in the afternoon). A lot of significance was given to the social value of this square and for this reason we thought a place which, in particular occasions, could host public events and fests that makes Isolotto one of neighborhoods most lively of Florence.

The ramps remind in the shape and in the location, a great wave which rises from the sea to the city. Under these ramps are Under this ramp take place all the functions required by the program: the sailing school, the club, the cafeteria and the services. A wide open space at the ground floor works as accessory to the square, providing shading for the hottest hours of the day. On the top of the ramp, easly reachable both from the square and from the beach, there is a large public terrace from which is it possible to enjoy a privileged 360° view over the sea and the mountains.

PARISH CENTER IN SESTO FIORENTINO, ITALY Project made for the “Architectural Design Lab V, professor Paolo Zermani, University of Florence, 20122013. The project is located in a country area in the Florentine Plain, between the airport and the Highway. The main idea was to reuse the marks of the ancient Roman centuriation in order to graft a system of empty and full spaces which orgainzed the complex. The public spaces reflect the voyds: a large cross carved into the ground that accommodates the square, the access road and the churchyard. Inside the large volume which rises over the excavation take place the church. The system of porches works as a filter between the open spaces and the underground ones, in which are organized the rectory, the classrooms and the other spaces dedicated to the community.

In this way it’s possible to obtain a new way to use both the cultural centres. Moreover, the presence of a recess and numerous glass walls connects the museum with the city. The exhibit volumes are organized on a sqaure central plant, which hosts the bigger expositions, and several smaller spaces, which stand around the central one and host the collection at a minor scale.

Project made for the Urban Design Lab I, professors Paolo Giovannini and Francesco Alberti, University of Florence, 2011-2012 This project consist of the reorganization of a 350.000 m2 wide area in the suburbs of Florence. As regards the fruit and vegetable market, we decided to maintain the central core, well connected with the road infrastructures, where the vegetables arrive. Moreover, there are planned several school and sport services and many green public area. All the areas are linked through a system of bicycle and pedestrian walkways (the red lines), which goes across the whole area of the project without setting foot on driveways. Those walkways are also connected to the underground parks through a series of small elevator/stairs towers.
