Girl Scouts’ Highest Awards
Building leaders who take action to make the world a better place Girl Scouts is excited about the opportunity to inspire girls with messages of leadership, caring for the environment, being kind to others, advocating for themselves and others, and respecting country. These values are at the core of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and the Highest Awards projects. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is different for each girl but she has the opportunity to hone her leadership, organizational and critical thinking skills. The three keys to leadership: Discover, Connect and Take Action, are put into play through the Girl Scout processes: girl led, learning by doing and cooperative learning. The focus for Girl Scouts’ Highest Awards is to identify a community issue, research the issue, develop a plan to address it in cooperation with a team of community members, establish a global connection with others and provide for sustainability for the project. The Bronze Award, earned by Girl Scout Juniors in 4th or 5th grade, challenges girls to work together as a group within the Girl Scout or wider community. At the Silver Award level—which is earned by Girl Scout Cadettes in 6th, 7th or 8th grades—girls work in groups of two to four in the wider community. The highest award in Girl Scouts, the Gold Award, is a project led by one young woman between 9th and 12th grade who builds a team to work with the larger community to meet a need. Since 1916, girls have successfully answered the call to Go Gold, an act that indelibly marks them as accomplished members of their communities and the world.

Everyone in the Girl Scout community is immensely proud of the exceptional young women who have earned one of Girl Scouts’ Highest Awards this year. They are leaders among their peers and in the community. We hope you will take inspiration from their accomplishments and share it with others. Stephanie Boudreaux Falcon Falcon High School You’re Beautiful I partnered with the Woodmen Hills Recreation Center on their annual beauty day for girls. Their current event was for young girls, but I decided that middle school girls need to learn more about this subject as without proper knowledge it can lead to low self-esteem. At the event they learned about proper skin care, hair care and fashion from area volunteers/ experts I recruited. It took me around three months to work on the project and it benefitted 25 girls. My Girl Scout troop also helped me with the project. I left my event plan with the recreation center so they could replicate it in the future. I am proud I helped girls raise their self-confidence through this project!
Mikaylla Ashlyn Brown Montrose Montrose High School Encouraging Reading After tutoring middle school students for another project, I discovered reading was an area where many students struggled. For my Gold Award, I created a partnership between my high school and Pomona Elementary. I had students come in and read during the annual Camp ReadMore, which impacted 420 students. The kids were really excited and sat in awe as the “older kids” read to them. I also constructed five reading benches for the libraries in the Montrose and Olathe School Districts. The ASTRA Club at my high school is planning to continue the reading partnership. Pomona also dedicated their bench to the third grade accelerated readers. If students score well on annual tests, they will paint their name and place their handprint on the bench. 5

Anneliese Meta Bruening Boulder Boulder High School Clothe Your Baby I love sewing, and I combined that love with helping those in need in my community for my Gold Award. I sewed clothing for underprivileged children in my community (through Parenting Place) as well as in Poland (through SOS Children’s Villages). I didn’t act alone in the venture. I reached out to family, friends and other area Girl Scouts to help me. I organized many sewing parties, where novice and expert sewers helped me. There were many challenges to overcome in following patterns and finishing the clothing items. But, in the end, we created 38 outfits for these organizations. I used Facebook to organize my parties and share information about my final products. I am proud to have helped families in need.
Juliana Elise Burton Lafayette Monarch High School Malaria Prevention and Agricultural Support The core issues that I addressed for my Gold Award project were the rapid increase of malaria and the prominent issue of hunger in the country of Haiti. I did this by first supplying mosquito repellent, insecticide, mosquito nets and malaria information to a local orphanage. The second phase included providing each of the 54 orphans with a gardening gift bag. Each bag contained a pair of gardening gloves, one packet of corn seeds, one packet of a random seed choice, and three tongue depressors to label and identify the vegetables in their garden. I worked with my community to collect these items and my Girl Scout troop assisted in assembling the items that a local group, Love Takes Root, took to Haiti.

Jessica Anne Calzolari Longmont Mead High School Hometown Hunger I established a community garden to supply fresh produce to a local food bank, St. John’s, for my Gold Award. I established a summer camp where children in the community learned about gardening, from planting to caring for plants and harvesting them. I also worked with OUR Center, which helps those in need, and taught a class on how easy it is to grow fresh produce and incorporate it into your life. The most successful aspect of my project was the relationships I created between volunteering at the community garden to working with the food bank volunteers. This project really helped me understand the kind of people who live in my community, and I know I made a difference in their lives.
Julia Campfield Wray Wray High School 100th Anniversary Celebration For my Gold Award project I wanted my community to celebrate a monumental moment in history—Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary (celebrated in 2012). I created an event for my community to celebrate this occasion. The day included crafts, cooking, skits, letter writing to our soldiers and a food drive to help the local food banks. Many area Girl Scout troops helped out. This required a lot of event planning as well as spreading the word in my community. I also wrote articles for our local newspaper about Girl Scouts’ history. In the end I created a notebook about everything I did so that others could plan similar large events. I feel the largest takeaway was inspiring other girls to love their Girl Scout experience.

Kelsey Lee Coker Louisville Monarch High School Kids Helping Kids I wanted to educate my high school community about teen homelessness. I teamed up with ALLY Youth Services, an organization that works with homeless teens. Not only did I collect school supplies and GED study books and socks and gloves in my high school for this center, but I also volunteered at the center for hundreds of hours, cooking them meals and helping motivate them to study for their GED. My high school DECA Club is planning to sustain the project. When I collected the items for the teens at my high school I also gave a presentation on the growing homeless teen issue in our country. I am most proud of the impact I had on these teens to improve their lives.
Kimberley D. Crawford Brighton Brighton High School Happy Faces For my Gold Award I collected 600+ toothbrushes and toothpaste for those living in Africa. I worked with my cousin, Kerry, who earned her Gold Award when she was a Girl Scout and worked for the Peace Corps in Africa. I collected these items through many places in my community, including the Special Olympics events. I also placed stories in my local newspaper. Everyone who donated signed a poster. I sent this to Africa so the people who got the donations could sign it and send it back. I am very happy and proud to have earned my Gold Award. I learned a lot about being a leader and how to communicate with others. I was featured on 9NEWS when I completed my project.

Annie Szczurek Davis Boulder Boulder High School Elders and Youth Working Towards a Greater Cause Through my Gold Award, I worked to address the issue that elderly people, even those in nursing homes, can be isolated and lonely. I created a program where over the course of several months, 27 5th graders from Boulder Community School of Integrated Studies came to Boulder Manor, a local nursing home, and got to know the residents by participating in discussions and activities with them. Feedback from the program showed it made a difference. One Boulder Manor resident said “it made me feel great and I loved getting to know the kids.� At the end of my project I created a guide for the school and nursing home as well as posted it online to encourage programs like this to continue in the future.
Renae Lynn Dotson Wray Wray High School Finger-Painting Masters For my Gold Award I created an art class for kindergarten to 4th grade children to help with the issue of there being little to no art classes for this age group. Art is one of my passions, and I believe that the sooner you are introduced to it the better. The art mediums we addressed through this two-month class included 3-D, symmetry, abstract, paint, pencil and pastel. At the end of the class the students entered their favorite piece of art in the Wray Art Show. My lesson plans for this class will be used for similar future projects. I also grew from a very shy and timid person to a confident leader. I also feel I gave children a way to express themselves.

Paige Julene Engelage Colorado Springs Coronado High School Worldwide Money Many Americans do not see past their own little world, but my Gold Award project’s goal was to break down those barriers and increase kids’ understanding of our world. I decided a unique way I could do that is by teaching kids about money from different countries. I gave two presentations to 12 children between the ages of 5 and 13. In one presentation, I had a kindergartener and a 7th grader, so finding a place where it was not too boring or too overwhelming was difficult. The children learned that money is a thread tying all cultures together. However, each currency shows off a country’s culture and their greatest achievements. The American Numismatic Association received copies of my presentation to use in the future.
Madeleine Elaine Garcia Denver East High School Craft Camps at The Gathering Place My Gold Award helped develop confidence and creativity for women and children living in poverty who don’t often have opportunities to express themselves. I worked with The Gathering Place, a day shelter, to develop craft classes that served 30 people. In my first camp one woman said, “It sure is nice to be able to come here and make something to take your mind off of everything.” This showed me small acts make big differences. I organized separate art projects for the women and children. I also created a binder showing all of the materials I used so the organization can hold similar camps in the future. I inspired my sister, my project helper, to become a permanent volunteer at The Gathering Place.

Elizabeth Giles Montrose Montrose High School Quilts for Care I made 13 quilts for the Bright Beginnings Preschool and Childcare Center for my Gold Award. They were excited to receive them and plan to use them in their infant room. I believe the quilts will remind the kids they were thought of and cared for. I learned to quilt at 8 years old from my grandma. I originally was going to donate the quilts to kids at a local hospital, but I found that many won’t keep the quilts as they are a painful reminder of being sick. Local Girl Scouts helped me with the project. I spent a total of 172 hours on this project and learned to be more patient and positive. I’ve also committed to repairing the quilts for the center as needed.
Summer Michelle Hammond Centennial Grandview High School Summershines Platelet Drive For my Gold Award I set out to help those in my community, like me, who are fighting cancer. After hours of hard work and coordination, 100 units of blood products (12 units of blood and 58 units of platelets) were donated to the Presbyterian/ St. Luke’s Medical Center. These donations also increased the hospital’s donor database, and I hope this will help their future donations. To get the word out I created a website and Facebook page. I also had a booth at the Relay For Life event at Smoky Hill High School. My main source of donors came from the leadership teams at Rose Medical Center and Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center as a result of presentations I gave to them.

Elizabeth Mary Henke Littleton Conifer High School For the Benefit of Moms For my Gold Award I updated the cry room for young mothers and their children at Trinity Lutheran Church in Denver. I cleaned and sanitized everything in the room, made covers for the two rocking chairs and a diaper changing cover, painted a mural on the wall and created a canvas painting and stenciled, and hung up animal cards on the ceiling. My hope was that an updated room would attract more young families to my church. After the room was done I created a pamphlet on the room for the church to display. Some of the skills I gained through this project included how to organize people and call people on the phone. I also learned I can make a difference when I try.
Jodie Hight Colorado Springs Cheyenne Mountain High School Green it Up! I decided to help the Laurel Manor Senior Citizens Care Center for my Gold Award. I helped out with this organization for my Silver Award, and after noticing their outdoor space/backyard was in disrepair, I decided to renovate it for my Gold Award. I spent three years on this project, gardening what was there and updating it with new garden spaces. I built a raised, interactive vegetable garden that gives the residents the opportunity to help water and watch the plants grow. All the plants will withstand the Colorado climate and reseed themselves. I also installed a drip system to help with watering. I take joy in knowing that I’ve helped provide these residents with access to this outdoor activity.

Emily Ruth Krizmanich Howard Cotopaxi High School Go Fish...Green! My Gold Award was all about helping the environment. Used fishing line was clogging up local lakes and hurting the wildlife. But, with a better way to dispose of used fishing line, this could be solved. I worked for several months with the Colorado State Forest Service and Division of Wildlife on installing fishing line receptacles around Chaffee County lakes. For two years, some local groups have volunteered to help maintain the receptacles. After the two years is up, the local Forest Service will take over the maintenance process. Those maintaining the receptacles also have the responsibility to send the used fishing line to a recycling plant in Iowa. I learned that I can be a strong and organized leader and can work in a team.
Jacqueline Lloyd Falcon Falcon High School Falcon’s Athletic Training Hot Packs During my volunteer work with my school’s athletic training program, I noticed they had a need for hot and cold packs to help with treatments. I created 15 of these to earn my Gold Award. Many of my family and friends helped me with this project. My project helped the athletic training program facility at my school run more smoothly. I am very proud I was able to balance my busy high school schedule to complete this project. I learned a lot about leadership and was able to explore my interests in athletic training, which is the career I plan to pursue in college. My school was very proud of my work and proudly displays a certificate about my project in the athletic training facility.

Sydney Faye Ludwick Castle Rock Douglas County High School You’ve Got A Friend In Me For my Gold Award project I set out to educate my community on basic pet first aid and care. This required me to do some research and also partner with veterinarians in my area. I educated my community through creating a blog and a brochure. I passed out nearly 200 brochures at several pet adoption events and animal hospitals. I also created a magnet with the phone number for animal poison control. When researching this topic I also learned about rattlesnake vaccinations for pets and included that in my information. Before I worked on this project I was very hesitant in asking people for help and being assertive. I have now become a lot more independent.
Rachel Lynne Mills Lakewood Green Mountain High School Preserving the History of Alice, Colorado The town of Alice, Colo. in Clear Creek County began as a mining settlement, then a ski resort, and is now a vacation house community. Specifically, the historic schoolhouse in the town was the center of my Gold Award. The Alice Historical Society needed a way to protect the paper files stored there, as well as a way to promote the schoolhouse to the world. I provided this through a website (alicehistoricalsociety.org) I built for them. Now they have an online presence and a way to permanently store the paper files. They also can store tangible artifacts in a display case that I built for them. The most challenging aspect of my project was teaching myself about the website-building program Dreamweaver.

Katherine Elise Nester Littleton Dakota Ridge High School Buried In Bottles I set out to help the environment for my Gold Award project by inspiring others in my community to be more responsible in using disposable plastic bottles. I was first educated on this topic by conservation expert Tracy Vlnicka at the Denver Zoo. Then I created a brochure and presentation that I delivered to 130 students at two different schools. At the presentation they signed pledge cards to use reusable bottles. I also created a Facebook page to help continue the education. I have realized through this project that compassion and taking action defines a part of who I am. I also learned how passionate I am about conservation and what I am capable of doing to help the cause.
Charlotte Anne O’Donnell Lafayette Fairview High School Un-Silencing Stories of Youth Depression My project benefited those who suffer or have suffered from depression by helping to raise awareness and open up a means of conversation about this important issue with the community. I worked with Colie’s Closet, a peer education group that focuses on teaching middle and high school students about depression. I helped build a new presentation on this topic and trained 20 presenters to help the organization reach more students. I also set up a collaboration between Colie’s Closet and Second Wind Fund of Boulder County, which provides free therapy to depressed and suicidal kids in the area. The immediate impacts of my project were often seen in Colie’s Closet members who felt empowered to help friends or themselves after training. 15

Katie Perroni Colorado Springs Liberty High School Blankets with Blessings When I started brainstorming ideas for my Gold Award project, it became clear to me that I wanted to help children. This has always been a favorite thing for me. I created 47 fleece blankets for sick children at Memorial Hospital for Children. My original goal was 30, so I was very excited to exceed my goal. I collaborated with groups in my church, area Girl Scout troops and the Spanish Club at my school, who has agreed to carry on the project. I am also very proud that I’m carrying on my family’s tradition of earning the highest awards in Scouting. The smiles on the children’s faces when I delivered the blankets is something I will never forget.
Kelsey Michiko Proper Arvada Ralston Valley High School Keep Our Creeks Clean The issues that I addressed for my Gold Award were water pollution, the importance of keeping our creeks clean, and the problems that are created from dumping wastes and chemicals into storm drains. I collaborated with the City of Arvada Water Quality Division. I visited businesses (Home Depot, Lowe’s, PetSmart, McDonald’s and Office Max) in my area and provided them with a brochure and educational video about storm water pollution and what can be done to prevent it. These businesses also allowed me to paint the words “Do not Dump, Drains to Waterways” in their parking lots next to storm drains. I believe my project made an impact and will continue to help educate others on this critical issue for our water supply.

Frances Richardson Centennial Grandview High School Learn to be a Grandview Wolf For my Gold Award I created a program designed to help students transferring to my high school. I based my project on my own experiences struggling as a transfer student during my sophomore year. The program is an orientation held at the beginning of every semester that teaches transfer students all the things that they would be expected to know, like how to use the computer network and make-up tests. Student volunteers lead a tour of the school at the end of the orientation. Through this project I learned about organizing large groups of people and the process of setting up a fair-sized community event. I was very happy to help my school become more friendly and accommodating to transfer students.
Samantha Roberts Longmont Skyline High School Nutrition Guide for Student Athletes My Gold Award was all about helping student athletes perform at their best by staying hydrated and maintaining a proper diet. I have personal experience being an athlete and knowing what can happen if you don’t fuel your body correctly. I put together hundreds of bags for student athletes in my community thanks to the help of companies like Gatorade. The bags included protein granola bars, color and preservative free Gatorade, and an athlete nutrition brochure I put together. In addition to the bags I also made presentations to several sports teams in my community. I worked with local doctors and athletes to come up with the information to include in my brochure and presentations. Area coaches will use these materials in the future as well. 17

Abigail Claire Russell Littleton Bear Creek High School The BC Stars I helped involve special needs students in the activities at my school for my Gold Award. I felt that special needs students weren’t welcomed. I decided to partner with the cheerleading squad, and we worked with special needs students on a dance, which they performed at an assembly. We worked with the students for six weeks. The students involved gained confidence and felt included. The performance also received high marks from administrators at the school and the student body. In fact I’ve seen many of my peers interact well with our special needs students after this program. Some have even signed up to be teacher assistants in this special needs department. There are plans to continue this project as part of the school’s P.E. curriculum.
Lindsey Linnea Schwarz Monument Palmer Ridge High School Project HOPE After going to San Juan, Puerto Rico with my youth group in 2011, I found that there are many low income children in this area who need help. I discovered these kids didn’t know English, and because Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States, knowing English is a key to their life success. When I returned home, I decided to create a daily curriculum of indoor and outdoor activities for these children to teach them English and life skills. The largest obstacle I faced was the cultural differences and language barrier. But I found a local mentor who was born and raised in Puerto Rico to help. I will never forget these children. They helped me become a better person.

Ashley R. Shuler Lafayette Peak to Peak Charter School Mission Musician Music is one my passions, and for my Gold Award I created an advanced orchestra at my school. Although my school has an orchestra program that works for most students, a few of us have been taking private lessons and are advanced. In addition to playing for school events, such as the National Honor Society induction, the new group also took on tutoring 5th grade students. My project most impacted my school’s music teachers, who are stretched very thin in managing many other musical groups on tight budgets. This group also met the need to challenge students who were at a more advanced level. I learned how to be a music teacher through this process, which will help with my career aspirations.
Jennifer L. Stobbs-Vergara Centennial Eaglecrest High School Smiles For Miles Educating underprivileged youth on the benefits of good oral hygiene was the inspiration for my Gold Award. During my project I taught children at Joshua Station, a transitional homeless shelter, as well as other Girl Scouts, how to properly brush, floss and maintain good oral hygiene. With orthodontist Dr. Nielson and local dentists, I developed materials to distribute in bags I made with my grandmother. The bags included instructions, toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss. More bags were delivered to additional shelters. Smiles for Miles education will continue beyond my project through another local Girl Scout troop to whom I passed my program materials and plans. Through this project I grew as a leader, learning how to work with professionals and delegate tasks to accomplish my goals. 19

Elizabeth Stuber Boulder Boulder High School Accessible Gardens My grandmother inspired me for my Gold Award project. When my grandmother was in an assisted living facility, I felt it would have benefited her to have something to care for, like a garden. So I decided to put together gardens at Sunrise, an assisted living facility in my area. I spent 60+ hours on this project. My family and friends helped me. I constructed the gardens in such a way that even those in wheelchairs can enjoy them and help care for them. At the completion of my project the gardens were introduced to the residents, and activities have been created at the facility for the residents to help care for them for years to come. Through this project I grew as a leader.
Dezirae Joy Todd Cortez Montezuma-Cortez High School Scrambled Eggs for Brains Traumatic brain injuries are a serious issue often overlooked. I have gone through this and found that many are uneducated on the issue. For my Gold Award I created a blog (myscrambledeggsforbrains. blogspot.com) to help inspire people going through these injuries. I interviewed people who had brain injuries and also told my story, particularly focusing on how to cope with challenges. I also did some further research on these injuries, which I included on my blog. I promoted my blog to my Facebook friends. With this blog people coping with a brain injury have tools to help them through the healing process. People worldwide have connected with me, and it feels good to know I am making a difference.

Ashlyn Nell Tooley Denver East High School Pencils for Paraguay After spending a summer in Paraguay, I decided I wanted to help disadvantaged children and give them an equal opportunity to education. I found that students were unable to learn because they were lacking basic materials to write with or that teachers were lacking materials to plan their lessons. For my Gold Award I collected notebooks, pencils and other school supplies to give these students a chance to learn. I reached out to my community and local Girl Scout troops to help. Additionally I gave presentations about my project to various groups across the state. These presentations have led to other drives to benefit these children as well as inspired others to become involved. I gained many leadership skills through this project.
Caroline Troscher Falcon Falcon High School Library Beautification For my Gold Award project I helped out the new local library in my town. One day when my mom and I drove by the library, it struck me that there wasn’t much there but the building itself. I decided to decorate the outside of the building, including adding picnic tables so people visiting could enjoy reading in the great Colorado outdoors. We also decorated pavers, which are cement tiles. I got volunteers from my Girl Scout troop, family and the Falcon community to help with my project. I was very happy that a lot of kids decided to help. During my project I learned many things about myself but the major one is that I can do anything I put my mind to.

Emily Marie Wagner Highlands Ranch Mountain Vista High School Hope for Haiti I organized a supply drive for the children of Haiti for my Gold Award. I did this project to help these children living in poverty and also educate my community about these important world issues and how they can help. To collect the items I created fliers and gave presentations in my community. I put together 150 backpacks of school supplies. I also collected hygiene items, clothing, toys and stuffed animals. I will take these items to the region on a mission trip. Additionally I created a website on my project and included information on how people could help in the future. Paige Katherine Witter Denver George Washington High School Smiley Tutoring Group For my Gold Award I addressed the achievement gap for about 50 students at Smiley Middle School. I did this by setting up a tutoring program between the middle school and my high school. I hoped by pairing middle school students with high school role models, it would prepare and motivate them to do well in high school. Over the year-long program, teachers noticed test scores going up as well as improvement in classroom behavior. My school is continuing this program, and the high school students have found it very rewarding. One girl I tutored started the year doing addition by counting on her fingers. By the end of the year she could do addition and subtraction as well as basic multiplication and division.

Kayla Ann Woodward Lakewood Bear Creek High School Mile High Hope I wanted to help teens coping with cancer, so I decided to create a resource guide for them. The guide included helpful information on cancer, tips on going back to school and how to stay connected with friends. I distributed my materials, along with a travel bag with a journal and hair tie, to 70 patients through Sky High Hope camp and the Oncology Unit at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Due to the High Park fire, I had to change my plans of attending the Sky High Hope overnight camp and instead go to an area day camp. Through this project I learned to communicate with adults and challenge my comfort zone to talk to strangers.
Eleanor MacDonald Wroble Denver East High School Pennies Make Cents I addressed the lack of financial education that people have in the world for my Gold Award. Studies have repeatedly proven that children who receive financial education while they are young are more likely to be successful in the future. Through my involvement on the Youth Advisory Board at Young Americans Center for Financial Education, I came up with a project where I organized a class that I took out to school groups and the Girl Scout community to present. The 50 kids were taught basic financial ideas such as the benefits of saving over spending and the differences between dollars and cents. The proudest part for me in this project was seeing the excitement of the kids as their knowledge grew.

You have touched the future Girls who earn one or more of the Highest Awards receive much moral support and encouragement from their parents, families, troop leaders, advisors and mentors. To all of those who have provided encouragement, support and guidance to these young women—thank you. They could not have done it without you. The volunteer members of the Girl Scouts of Colorado Gold Award Committee are from across the state and work closely with the candidates. They are dedicated to the success of each girl, while encouraging them to strive for their personal best and meeting the standard of this prestigious award.
